I like the concept of making meals ahead and having them in the freezer for those busy times or when I just don't feel like cooking. An issue I've had with some make-ahead cookbooks is that so many of the recipes rely on canned condensed "cream of" soups and other processed ingredients, and end up being high in fat, starches, and sodium.
This cookbook is different with its focus on real, healthier ingredients, all of which can be found at any larger grocery store. The recipes themselves are not complicated so cooks of any level will be able to master them. Included are casseroles, meats, poultry, and seafood; soups, stews, and chilis; side dishes and vegetarian options, breads, rolls, and pizzas; appetizers, breakfast dishes, desserts, and sauces and condiments.
The book starts with helpful tips on freezing and organizing for a cooking session. While one doesn't have to spend an entire day cooking for a month, suggestions are given for making multiple dishes at the same time in order to have several meals ready for the week(s) ahead.
There are several recipes I look forward to trying, including an unusual butternut squash and chard lasgagne, three-bean Italian minestrone soup, turkey sausage and broccoli rabe calzones, low-carb mini quiche, creamy turkey casserole with broccoli and cauliflower, raspberry-lavender crumb cake, and dark chocolate mint cake. I did make a modified version of the All-Occasion Sloppy Janes recipe with good results.
There are many color photographs which always makes a cookbook nicer and although it isn't spiral bound, it does lay open while in use which I also appreciate. This is a cookbook I recommend for those who like to plan ahead and have meals ready in the freezer that are also healthy.

I have over forty cookbooks, most supposedly geared for using long term food storage. Unfortunately, most use many fresh ingredients which may not be available. That leaves a couple of options, convert the fresh ingredients into dried ones or don't use the recipe. The great thing about this book is that it uses all long term food storage items. In addition to that the instructions are easy to follow and the food tastes great. I made up a couple of the dishes and shared them with a group of 50 people. They all loved them. This book embraces a whole new way of meal planning. Thank you! I can't wait to share this with my friends and family.

I bought this book from Mix A Meal directly and have enjoyed having it in my collection. The folks over at Mix a Meal are very easy to work with as well. I haven't tried all the recipes but I do especially like the gingerbread cookies and the tomato/pasta sauce recipes. They are quick, easy and have saved me a ton at the market (especially the pasta sauce). I am using some of the mix recipes to give gifts this year. They have sample recipes on the mix a meal site to see if you would like it

This is a great cookbook of basic mixes that are made with healthier ingredients than the store-bought versions and are cheaper to make. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of recipes in this book with chapters for breakfast (cereal and pancake mixes), baking mixes for all kinds of breads and cakes, pantry and refrigerator mixes that include mustards and dairy based products, main meal meat mixes, sauces, salad dressings and dips; mixes for soups, beans, rice, and pasta; beverages, seasonings, and a chapter of ideas for packaging mixes for gifts.
A recipe for a basic mix is given, followed by recipes that use the mix. For example, the dry master cream sauce mix can be used to make alfredo sauce, cheese sauce, or a meat gravy. The master baking mix is used for doughnuts, biscuits, pizza crust, and coffee cake; while the quick bread mix serves as a base for pumpkin, cranberry, carrot, apple, and banana breads. This is the only mix I've made so far and used it for pumpkin bread with good results.
Having mixes on hand to bake some brownies, make a homemade salad dressing, or put together some chai tea mix in a pretty jar for a gift is something I will appreciate not only for the convenience but also to save money and control the quality of ingredients.

My husband has allergies to just about every preservative, artificial flavoring, artificial coloring, and any other food additive on the market. All the stuff you really shouldn't eat anyway. I cook from scratch mostly, and this book has been a wonderful addition to my kitchen.
Last night I made the chocolate syrup; almost all the chocolate syrups on the market have artificial flavorings. My family loves the chocolate pudding from scratch (just three ingredients -- did you ever look at a pudding mix box?), and my kids are so used to tasting my home-cooked meals that they think the processed meals are gross.
The money we save is great, but the time I save in the kitchen is even better. I highly recommend this book.
