Eating for IBS: 175 Delicious, Nutritious, Low-Fat, Low-Residue Recipes to Stabilize the Touchiest Tummy Review

If you have IBS, you MUST get this book. I have had IBS for 15 of my 31 years. I have spent time and effort reading about IBS, making food diaries charting how different foods make me feel. Most of the conclusions that have taken me years to find out on my own are in this book. I wish it had been given to me when I was 16. Most books give vague suggestions that don't help. IBS is treatable, but only with diet. Nothing else I've tried has worked. And I've tried everything. I always felt like I had some psychological problem that made me have these reactions to food, but it's clear I don't. I still experience stress, but nothing gives me an attack quicker than a glass of milk or a large plate of fried food. All of the suggestions that she makes are right in line with what it took me years to find out. I knew that I couldn't drink orange juice on an empty stomach, but I thought that was only relevant to me! To think, there are millions of others who could have benefitted from this same bit of knowledge. The diet is perfect for me. There are only a few other things that are different for me. First, I am able to eat yogurt (except not frozen yogurt) without added fruit without any problems. Second, I am very allergic to MSG ..., which means I have lots of trouble with soups (because of the MSG in the broth), frozen foods, salad dressings, many veggie burgers, and the like. Lastly, caffeine causes me no trouble in small quantities. Through the use of this book as a starting off point, a person with IBS can quickly find a new way of eating that will change their life for the better. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this book. I am so happy it's been written. Hooray!

The Complete IBS Health and Diet Guide: Includes Nutrition Information, Meal Plans and Over 100 Recipes for Irritable Bowel Syndrome Review

This book is an invaluable resource to those affected by IBS. The first part of the book contains essential information as to how to achieve a nutritionally adequate diet despite the problems associated with IBS. The reader will learn which foods can cause inflammation and bowel irritation, which foods can nourish and heal the bowel using a low FODMAP diet, which nutrient supplements are necessary, and what forms of these recommended supplements are best absorbed.
The second part of the book contains over 100 kitchen-tested nutrient rich recipes that the entire family can enjoy. A 2-week sample low FODMAP meal plan is also included. As a Registered Dietitian with Crohn's disease, I continually keep abreast of new materials on IBD and IBS. Unfortunately, I have found some deleterious dietary misinformation about IBD/IBS on the market. In contrast, I was so impressed with "The Complete IBS Health and Diet Guide" that I use it as an example of an exceptional resource for other Registered Dietitians and/or clients when suggesting helpful guides to managing IBD/IBS through diet.

The Recipe Doctor Review

For those of you unfamiliar with the Recipe Doctor column, people send in their favorite, fat-filled recipes for Elaine Magee to transform into more healthful versions that people will still want to eat. Along the way, Magee explains her substitutions, so that the reader understands the rationale behind the various adjustments. Her latest book follows this same format. We are presented with the original reader question, Magee's explanation, and the new recipe. With careful reading, you can pick up common substitutions Magee uses that will help you doctor your own recipes. For example, mentioned frequently is cutting down on the amount of butter by mixing a small portion with fat-free cream cheese. The one flaw of this book is that nearly half the recipes are for sweet items, whether desserts, coffeecakes, or muffins. The cake section alone contains 15 recipes. People who bake often might love this emphasis, but I would have preferred more entrees. That aside, this is a great book to have in your kitchen. Not only are the recipes tasty, but the book offers information you can apply to other cookbooks.
