The Soup Mix Gourmet: 375 Short-Cut Recipes Using Dry and Canned Soups to Cook Up Everything from Delicious Dips and Sumpt (Non) Review

I'm a cookbook junkie, endless perusing the latest editions and the old standards (and not-so-standards) for new and exciting meals. A normal cookbook purchase will usually net 3 or 4 suitable recipes for my family's tastes. The Soup Mix Gourmet has proven a bonanza! I've marked over 40 recipes that sound terrific for our needs, and all five that I have made so far were total winners. I'll be looking for more works by this author; she really has the "magic touch" in the kitchen! I work in a brick-and-mortar bookstore, and have recommended this book to over two dozen folks in the last couple of weeks. All of them have expressed great pleasure (one even sent me a couple of boxes of dry soup mix with a thank-you note).
This book is beautifully done. Buy it today!

Japanese Hot Pots: Comforting One-Pot Meals Review

After living in Japan for three years, I was pining for something Japanese besides sushi. This book more than fills that need. It is beautifully laid out with lots of photos and easy-to-follow directions. The authors recognize that some of the ingredients and tools for these recipes could be difficult to find, so not only do they give suitable substitutes, they also provide websites of vendors who carry the unique items. There are plenty of sidebars offering explanations of why some things are done a certain way, including the right way to slice cabbage and why hot pot ingredients are added in a particular order. Another thing I love about a cookbook is when I can learn something about the dish, along with getting the recipe. I enjoy learning the origin of the recipe and/or why it's unique to a certain region. EVERY RECIPE has a story to go with it and many have serving options along with suggested side dishes.
Japanese hot pot meals are very family-oriented. In a Japanese home, the hot pot meal is cooked right at the dining table using a portable butane stove. Everyone just digs in or cooks their own favorites in the broth. Although a portable butane stove isn't something commonly found in an American home, it is easy enough to find either here at Amazon.com or at an oriental market. I have two of them, and they have been real lifesavers at pot lucks and during power outages. It's like taking my gas range with me, no matter where I go. So if you decide to invest in the butane stove, know that you will use it for more than the hot pot meals!!

Bowl Food: Comfort Food for People on the Move (Laurel Glen Little Food Series) Review

I was delighted with Bowl Food from the moment my sister brought it home, with its adorable concept and full-color pictures for every recipe. I immediately flagged multiple recipes to try, and have found several that have become staples for dinner parties (the Sweet Potato Salad is particularly impressive when trying to win over non-vegetarians) and for every-day dinners as well (the asparagus risotto is a tasty recipe and easy for those making their first foray into risottos). There are plenty of vegetarian recipes (I'd say at least 25%) and many others can be converted to vegetarian with a few easy substitutions. However, be aware that the majority of these recipes call for time-consuming prep and exotic ingredients. This book as a whole is not for the everyday home cook with a fulltime job--it's for weekend experimentation. While some recipes can still be explored without all the prep if you have a good local market (for example, if you can buy paneer cheese instead of making it!), many require a search for ingredients you may have never heard of.
If you like adventurous eating and spending hours in the kitchen is sometimes fun for you, you'll like this book. If not, buy it for a friend who adores cooking, and then borrow it to copy down the quick and easy recipes.

Simply Chilis, Chowders, and Stews: 100 Quick and Delicious One-Dish Dinners and Accompaniments (Wisdom of the Midwives) Review

So far, I've made three recipes from this book, and they are all winners. The pork tenderloin chili was fabulous, my husband and friends raved over it. The best part is that it only took a few minutes to prepare.
The black & white chili was very tasty, extremely nutritious, and also very simple to prepare. Also, I made the wild mushroom chowder--it took a little bit more effort than the chilis, but it was worth it!
I've always thought recipes don't have to be complex to be good, and "Chilis" proved it. Oftentimes, the right combination of a few good ingredients is all it takes. These recipes are perfect for busy families and for entertaining. I highly recommend it.

The Everything Cookbook Review

I received this cookbook as a Christmas gift, and at first was slightly confused what what my frined was thinking, because I have absolutely zero cooking skill. But upon further inspection of the book, it's very interesting and actually goes as far as to make cooking fun for me. I do not know the first thing about cooking, and this book starts at the very basics...like how to properly thaw chicken and what different spices and herbs do. It actually gives you detalied pictures of how to cut up the meat if the recipe calls for you to 'julieanne' the chicken. The recipes are very basic, but every one I've tried so far has turned out great. And that's saying a lot for a very very very beginner cook like me! The only improvement I would make on the book is to make the pages laminated, and possibly make the binding spiral. It's kind of hard to keep the book open and I've spilled quite a few things on it already! Both are very minor drawbacks and I would highly recommend this book to a beginning cook!

Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for All Seasons Review

Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for All Seasons is the fourth edition of Nava's book previously titled Vegetarian Soups for All Seasons. It is essentially the same book as the third edition, but with the color photos added along with the new cover. It is substantially different from the first two editions.
I am a total soup nut so I was very excited to try this one. I hadn't seen any of the previous editions but I'm a big fan of Nava's other cookbooks. This certainly lived up to my expectations. Like all of Nava's cookbooks, the recipes in this book were easy to make, used simple ingredients that I typically have in my pantry, and, most importantly, my family loved them.
The recipes are arranged by seasons, which is a really nice feature since we try to eat local, seasonal foods. It being January when I got the book, I turned straight to the winter soups and found several just perfect for a rainy winter suppers. The first soup I tried was the Three Bean Soup with Brown Rice. Well, actually it was only two bean soup (kidney and cannellini) because I didn't have any frozen green beans. I did have kale though so we still got the green in there. My daughters had bowl after bowl of this hearty tomato-based soup and I ended up with no leftovers for lunch the next day.
The second soup we tried was the Hearty Winter Roots Soup. This was a wonderful mash of potatoes, carrots, rutabagas, and parsnips in a creamy, cheesy soup. Another hit with the family. The third dish we tried was the Vegetarian Goulash--a great "meat" (seitan) and potatoes stew that reminded me of the Sunday dinners my mom made when I was growing up--except without the meat of course.
I can't wait to cook my way through the rest of the seasons. This spring, I'm looking forward to Asparagus and Spinach Soup, Leek and Mushroom Bisque, and Puree of Spring Greens. In the heat of the summer, I can try one of the many cold soups offered like Cream of Lettuce Soup, Classic Gazpacho, or Minted Peach Soup. Next fall (if I can wait that long), I'm dying to try the Baked Onion Soup, New England Clam-less Chowder, and Pumpkin-Apple Soup. In addition to soups, there's a lovely selection of breads, muffins, biscuits and scones. My daughters and I had a blast making Chapatis.
If you love soup or are looking for each meals for your family, this is definitely a good cookbook for you.

Kristen Suzanne's EASY Raw Vegan Soups: Delicious & Easy Raw Food Recipes for Hearty, Satisfying, Flavorful Soups Review

The recipes in this book are really good, and if that were the only criterion, I'd give this book 5 stars. I have really liked everything I've made. I don't mind that there are no pictures, either.
However, there is more to putting out a good recipe book than tasty recipes. Organization is important in order to produce a book that is easy to use. There is NO list of recipes in the table of contents, and NO index of recipe titles or of ingredients. This means you have to page through the entire recipe section to find 'Guacamole soup' or 'Summertime Corn Bisque'. There is simply no way to find recipes other than flipping through the book--the recipes aren't even in alphabetical order by title within the recipe section, either. There appears to be no discernible organization of these recipes within the book. The lack of an ingredients index means that you can't look up an ingredient and find all the recipes that contain that ingredient. These are *major* organizational flaws in a recipe book.
There also isn't clear delineation between recipes. That is, the recipes run together, rather than each recipe beginning at the top of a separate page. This bugs me, but not nearly as much as no index.
I have two of Kristen's books, and each one has the same first chapter, which is redundant. The other book also lacks an index or list of recipes in the table of contents.
If Kristen ever revises this book and the others in the series, I strongly advise the addition of an index, or at the very least a listing of the title of each recipe in the table of contents. The latter suggestion would not add to the cost of producing the books and would make them far easier to use than they are now.

The Daily Soup Cookbook Review

I craved Daily Soup concoctions in NYC, although they were pricey. Alas, this Summer, The Daily Soup closed its retail locations and sold its name to another company. But at least we are left with their bible, the book of soup recipes. Definitely a keepsake. Some say there are four basic soup categories: broth, clear, pureed, and thick. The Daily Soup broke these rules of combined the categories. Therefore, the books chapters are grouped into vegetable, corn, tomato, rice, bean, chili, lentil/pea, cheese, and coconut to name a few. The book includes recipes and stories, as well as recommendations of films and music to watch and listen to as your cook and eat. The standouts SOUPS are; a diary free, lowfat Borscht, Jamaican Pumpkin, Roasted Eggplant Parmesan, Yucatan Chicken Lime, Wild Mushroom barley, Chicken Matzoh Ball (sinker balls), Mexican Tortilla soup, Mexican Posole, Poblano corn chowder, New Zealnd Sweet Potato chowder, Cuban black bean, Chili Con Carne, Cincinnati Chili (ala skyline), 4 bean veg chili, indian black chili, Moroccan lamb stew, indian yellow split pea soup, senegalese with peanut soup, veg gumbo, and watermelon with chicken. My faves are Mulligatawny, Mulligatawny with lentils, and Tuscan multibean. The book also includes their Periodic Table of Soup Types, and nine recipes for veg, chicken, and fish based soup stocks

Taste of Home: Busy Family Favorites: 363 30-Minute Recipes Review

This `Taste of Home' book has 363 recipes that are supposed to only take 30 minutes to prepare. There are pictures for most of the recipes and many tips, such as, how flank steak should be sliced, and how to handle a pork loin.
Most are recipes, you would know if you are an experienced cook, but this will still give you ideas. Some of the recipes are very similar - the same basic idea with a little variation: sausage zucchini skillet,, sausage rice skillet, bow tie beef skillet, sausage and vegetable skillet - all just changing just a few ingredients.
Recipes included are; sandwiches and salads, soups, beef, pork, poultry, seafood, meatless, sides and desserts. There are 2 indexes, a general one and one with the main ingredient, which really comes in handy when looking through the pantry to find something to fix. Some of our family favorites are; linguine with garlic sauce and pistachio crusted salmon cakes.
These are quick ideas for hearty good tasting meals, which could help many who want to prepare enjoyable tasting quick meals.

Everyday to Entertaining: 200 Sensational Recipes That Transform from Casual to Elegant Review

I like everything about this cookbook from the beautiful color photographs to the layout of the pages and the fact that even the elegant versions of the recipes are not difficult to prepare.
To describe a cookbook as unintimidating may seem odd but that's what came to mind as I read this one because I felt I could pick any recipe and have success in creating a dish my family will enjoy that I could also confidently serve to company. The recipe pages are in an easy to read format that includes color-blocked sections with helpful tips, steps that can be done ahead of time, facts about ingredients, and a section called Fashion Plate that recommends other dishes from the book to create a complete dinner.
What makes this cookbook unique, and where the title comes from, is that a recipe is given for a simpler everyday dish followed by a more sophisticated variation of it for entertaining. For example, a recipe is given for Crab Dip with Artichokes and Jalepeno, and the entertaining version is an appetizer called Crab and Goat Cheese Bouchees made with the crab dip, puff pastry shells, and toasted almonds. The everyday Soft Chicken Tacos with Tomatillo Salsa recipe is dressed up for entertaining as Chicken Chorizo Enchiladas with Creamy Tomatillo Sauce. Fudgy Brownie Cake transforms into Fudgy Chocolate Babycakes with Peanut Buttercream, and Mediterranean Couscous Salad becomes Spiced Israeli Couscous and Chicken Salad (using a rotisserie chicken to make it even easier) for entertaining.
The only recipe I've tried so far was a variation of the Chipolte Chicken Soup with Black Beans and Grilled Corn. I used thawed frozen corn grilled under the broiler instead of grilled corn on the cob, and I don't care for the taste of chipolte in adobo sauce so I used some pepper flakes instead but it still tasted good.
Recipe sections include appetizers, salads, soups, pasta and pizza, meats, poultry, fish and seafood, side dishes, and desserts. The recipes seem easy enough and the ingredients used can be found at larger grocery stores.
This is a cookbook I'll enjoy using.

Love Soup: 160 All-New Vegetarian Recipes from the Author of The Vegetarian Epicure Review

I have lots of cookbooks sitting on the shelf gathering dust - but not this one. I've already used it 3 times in as many weeks, and as the weather gets colder I anticipate trying more recipes.
There's a whole chapter on "green soups" that use those dark leafy greens the nutritionists are always urging us to eat (unsuccessfully in my case). In my first attempt vast quantities of kale and spinach almost overflowed the soup pot, but after being cooked down and pureed with seasonings the greens were transformed into a delicious soup that was creamy without the need for butter or cream. It was so good I made it two weeks in a row.
Next I made the zucchini basil soup which uses a full 2 cups of basil to 2 pounds of zucchini - easy and delicious.

The Everything Almost Homemade Cookbook (Everything (Cooking)) Review

I haven't made any of the reipes yet, but I want to let folks know that so far most of the recipes make large amounts, many serve 6, 8 or 10. I cook for two and am used to most recipes that serve 4, but 6, 8, or 10 is a lot of food. Great for a family of four or more, not so great for small families of 2 or 3. Some but not all are freezable. On a positive note there are some nice features included that I haven't seen elsewhere: several recipes for make-your-own mixes, your own convenience foods, and some good charts. She does have some healthy eating info but there is no nutritional info, and many of the recipes are high fat using heavy cream, cream cheese etc.

Skinny Soups: Over 100 Hearty Entrees, Meal Starters, and Vegetarian Creations, Plus Special Soup Express Recipes for Cooks on the G (Skinny Cookbook) Review

Skinny Soups by Ruth Glick and Nancy Baggett is possibly the best lowcal cookbook ever written. I love soup and thought the recipes in this book were fabulous. Each soup I made was delicious, spicy and yet very easy to make. I have been making soups each week from this book for the last three months. I have experimented with fish stock for the first time, carrying home a halibut carcus large enough to fill my kitchen sink. Ruth Glick and Nancy Baggett have a award winning cookbook. I am purchasing several copies to give as gifts. I am looking forward to purchasing the entire Skinny Books series. Happy cooking!

365 Easy Soups & Stews: Simple, Delicious Recipes to Warm the Heart Review

The books claims to have easy soup and stew recipes. It delivers just that. The index is well organized by the ingredients and cooking method and I like the variety of recipes. For example, I was looking for a black bean soup recipe. There are several listed depending on taste preferences. Also, there are recipes that use dry black beans and others use canned black beans. With 365 recipes there are sure to be plenty to please all preferences and palates. The recipes certainly aren't gourmet, but why would anybody expect that out of a book with the title "Easy Soups & Stews"?

Moosewood Restaurant Daily Special: More Than 275 Recipes for Soups, Stews, Salads and Extras Review

Like to cook? I mean, like discovering new seasonings and playing with interesting ingredients? If so, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!
Don't be dismayed that the recipes are all soups and salads. Those are very broad categories! Many "salads" are more like casual meals (such as Bean Puree with Seven Savories, which is pretty much a really cool Middle Eastern-style nachos, using toasted pita wedges instead of tortilla chips, of course). And as for soups... there are SO MANY different recipes here, no matter what your idea of soup may be when you open this book, it'll have expanded ten-fold after you've perused these pages.
The best part is, soup and salad are such forgiving mediums, this book is perfect for the home chef who wants to explore. Helpful text explains unusual ingredients and describes why certain vegetables & seasonings were chosen to enhance flavor and texture in each recipe. At the bottom of every recipe, the Moosewood editors were kind to include a half dozen or so dishes that would compliment it nicely. Makes meal-planning a snap, and so far, they've been right on target, every time.
I got this book for Christmas and many of the recipes have already become "regulars." I have no qualms about trying new dishes, even when serving guests, because you can trust these recipes to need little, if any, tampering. Though I have several Moosewood cookbooks (and I like them all), I can't recommend THIS book enough. Really!
Oh yeah, and I wanted to also mention that Moosewood also includes time estimates & nutritional informaton for every recipe. gotta love that.
