Quick & Easy Chinese: 70 Everyday Recipes Review

This is the book on Chinese cooking that I have been looking for. All the dishes you love to eat in the restrauants, and for take out. Wonderful for those of us with no take out worthy of eating. Easy and flavorfull. The cover recipe is delicious... Kung Pao Chicken. Mongolian Beef is divine, but you need to double or triple the sauce. Lemmon Chicken is easy and fantastic as is the Shrimp with Zucchini and Sweet Red Peppers. They are all here..Orange beef, Pepper Steak, Chicken with Cashews, Moo Goo gai Pan, Pot stickers, Mu Shu Pork, and all are tasty and easy to make in an American kitchen. No pretenses to be authentic. Just extremely good American Chinese.... Like P.F.Chang's... I can't reccomend it highly enough.

Weight Watchers Take-Out Tonight : 150+ Restaurant Favorites to Make at Home--All 8 POINTS or Less Review

This may be the best book published under the Weight Watchers' umbrella. It is a wonderful collection of favorite recipes from eight culinary genres. Chinese, Mexican, Indian, Thai, Italian, Greek, Japanese and Deli cuisine is featured. I love food (that's my problem) and delights such as General Tso's Chicken, Chicken Saltimbocca, Spanakopita, Shrimp Pad Thai and Moo Goo Gai Pan are now healthy, tasty and guiltless. You will not believe that these recipes are all 8 points or less. What is even more remarkable is that the family or guests will not suspect that these recipes came from Weight Watchers. This is a great leap forward for Weight Watchers as it makes the most popular restaurant meals not only available in your home, but healthy and delicious.
The book, unlike some earlier Weight Watchers' cookbooks, is very well laid out. The chapters are color coded and the index is arranged by cooking cuisine, with the recipes listed alphabetically. There are many beautiful illustrations as well. Many of the recipes come with a box called Clever Cook's Tips that give the user some useful suggestions, techniques and recipe substitutions.
You don't have to be a Weight Watchers' client to appreciate this book. The recipes are just good, dieting or not! Buy this one...you won't be disappointed.

Madhur Jaffrey's World-of-the-East Vegetarian Cooking Review

I first flipped through this book when I was a teenager almost 18 years ago. I have to admit I was a little put off my the ingredients and techniques that were all so new to me. Years later I gave it another look through. Being a vegetarian at the time, I was missing Chinese food and wanted to try making some of my own. I bought this book and that was it for me. Every weekend I found myself exploring Chinatown, Little India, Japanese, Korean and Thai grocery stores. Afterwards I'd run home and whip up some outstanding meals.
Since then, I've collected most of Madhur Jaffrey's books and my kitchen has truly transformed. I fell in love with Asian food, so much so that I packed up my cases and headed over here to Asia.
This is truly an inspirational and indispensable book. Her Chinese dishes are among the best and her Indian ones are far better than any dishes I've ever had at any Indian restaurant. The tomato chutney is out of this world!
This book is a great launching pad if you're a vegetarian and want to learn how to cook. It's a great alternative to the gaseous bean-filled or heavy-handed cheese recipes in other Western veggie cookbooks. It's also a fantastic cookbook if you want to venture into Asian cooking. Give it a go!

Authentic Chinese Cuisine Review

Bryanna's Italian cookbook "Nonna's Italian Kitchen" must be the very finest ever example of vegan cookbook published to this date. And now she's done it again - with this wonderful vegan cookbook on Chinese cuisine, taking you all the way through dumplings, dim sum, noodles, soups, stir-fries, ... and vegetarian "mock-meats" that were invented thousands of years ago by strict buddhist monks. Whereas it used to be quite a work to rinse out the starch of a flour ball so that only the protein (gluten) was left, the arrival of pure gluten powder makes this a snap to prepare at home. While some recipes are somewhat elaborate which acquire some routine (making dumplings, spring rolls, etc.), there are several quick recipes (stir-fry chapter a.o.) that are very easy to prepare. It is an excellent cookbook if you love chinese foods, and the innovative inclusion of above-mentioned "mock-meats" makes it a cut above the rest. The pages are jam-packed with one tasty recipe after the other - this is a shining example that you do not need to feel deprived when embarking on a vegan diet.

The Everything Cookbook Review

I received this cookbook as a Christmas gift, and at first was slightly confused what what my frined was thinking, because I have absolutely zero cooking skill. But upon further inspection of the book, it's very interesting and actually goes as far as to make cooking fun for me. I do not know the first thing about cooking, and this book starts at the very basics...like how to properly thaw chicken and what different spices and herbs do. It actually gives you detalied pictures of how to cut up the meat if the recipe calls for you to 'julieanne' the chicken. The recipes are very basic, but every one I've tried so far has turned out great. And that's saying a lot for a very very very beginner cook like me! The only improvement I would make on the book is to make the pages laminated, and possibly make the binding spiral. It's kind of hard to keep the book open and I've spilled quite a few things on it already! Both are very minor drawbacks and I would highly recommend this book to a beginning cook!

Secrets of Fat-free Chinese Cooking (Secrets of Fat-free Cooking) Review

Ying Compestine has written an excellent book. She correctly points out that traditional Chinese cooking is both healthy and tasty. (In sharp contrast to Americanized Chinese food, which is tasty but not so healthy!) In her book, she introduces us to this traditional cuisine, and gives us step-by-step instructions on how to prepare these dishes.
As you might expect with this type of book, Ying includes a host of useful tips on shopping and selecting the various ingredients. She offers a lot of insights, and does a good job of familiarizing us with the various ingredients needed. And the many instructional diagrams are well-drawn and very helpful.
Now for the important part: These dishes taste great! Ying is correct in her assertion that high fat content is not a requirement for good food. My wife & I, and our two toddlers, have thoroughly enjoyed every meal that we've made.
If the book could be improved in any way, it might be by the addition of some suggested meals, or serving combinations. We are still experimenting to see which dishes best compliment each other. A highly enjoyable task!
All in all, this book is highly recommended. We've purchased multiple copies as gifts for our friends and relatives. I'm really looking forward to her next book

Weight Watchers Quick Start Plus (Plume) Review

I got this cookbook-and complete program guide, when it was pubished, way back in the 90's. Like most dieters, I went on and off. Now I have reached a critical level, and I HAVE to do it right, Keep going, or possibly face major complications.
I am VERY disgusted with the way WW has changed their program over the years. Since it was based on the diabetic exchange program, and I am now a diabetic, it still fits with my life style.
This diet is the safetest out there. You follow it, you get results.
I can't say I am following it to the letter, but for somebody who has been into insanity on portions, fat, and sugar content for a very very long time-It's a darn good start, and a form of reference.
After you learn the program, you can then adapt mamy of the things you have been eating to this way of eating. It's very simple to follow and understand. The key is honesty.
Great, dependable food scales are available on amazon, as well on cooks websites, so the glorified postagbe scales we started with in the 70's, are no longer the only way to go to remain
legal.
I wouldn't trade this way of doing food right for anything. And when WW goes back to sanity, then we'll talk about my joining again. As for now, I still have this book, and I am buying a couple of copies. It's my life!!!

Chinese One Dish Meals Review

The author Su-Huei Huang published another book based on recipes of this out-of-print Chinese One Dish Meals. The new book is called "Chinese Rice and Noodles: With Appetizers, Soups and Sweets." She cowrote this book with another popular Wei-Chuan cook Mu-Tsun Lee. I would say the new book is more "modernized," because it also contains popular or "in" dishes you can find in the restaurants today (like Taiwanese sticky rice, pan-fried noodles, boba tea and assortment of taro/tapioca desserts). In the preface of the new book, she even mentioned that most of the recipes from this Chinese One Dish Meals were included in the new book. I have both books, and she is right. Most of the noodle recipes and about 1/3 of the rice dishes in Chinese One Dish Meals are in the new book Chinese Rice and Noodles. So if you can't find a copy of the out-of-print Chinese One Dish Meals, try Chinese Rice and Noodles; I think you will be equally pleased. You can still get Chinese Rice and Noodles if you already have Chinese One Dish Meals, as they are not identical.
Onto the book... Like the previous reviewers, I love the recipes listed here. They are easy to cook and most of them do not require fancy sauces. It is ideal for singles or working couples, who just don't have time to whip up a traditional 4-course meal. It is kind of like having your own Chinese "lunch specials" for dinner at home.
If you are familiar with Wei-Chuan cookbook, you will know that the ingredients are usually simple, the recipes often involve 2 or 3 steps, and each recipe includes at least one large color photo of the final product. It gives you a pretty good idea of what your food should look like.
Needless to say, they are all tasty. I have yet to find a recipe from this book (and the new one too) that my family doesn't like.

Martin Yan Quick and Easy Review

This book is a MUST for any cooking library. The best Chinese cookbook I have ever used. Yan has a brilliant knack for creating recipies that are loaded with flavor while NOT loaded with ingredients or time consuming steps. The recipes are fast and NOT fussy or complicated, and absolutely delicious. With this book, I have created some of the BEST Chinese dishes I've ever made, and I've been collecting Asian cookbooks for many years. It would not be an overstatement to say that this book is incredible. Yan can even take something as simple and plain as rice and turn it into a mouth-watering masterpiece, which he has with his coconut rice (blew us away). Another favorite recipe here are the crab puffs (known as crab rangoon to many people). I have tried other recipes for this, and none have been nearly as good as these: pure taste bud heaven - hot or cold! The entree chapter has PLENTY of chicken and pork options (14 chicken entrees!), as well as beef and fish. We appreciate this because due to budget restraints we are able to use these meats more frequently. Most people will have no problem finding these ingredients in any supermarket, and the length of the ingredient list and preparation steps will intimidate no one. This book is extremely practical, even for a busy weeknight. I can't believe I am now able to create restaurant-quality dishes at home (actually, better!) with so little effort and time!
