The Top 100 Healing Foods: 100 Foods to Relieve Common Ailments and Enhance Health and Vitality (The Top 100 Recipes Series) Review

I have an entire book shelf filled with books on healing foods and super foods. But what I really like about this one is its succinct form. Each food gets one page (though a few, such as garlic, warrant two). On each page is a photo of the food, a section that lists its nutrients, a recipe using the food, and the main section which describes the food and its chief health benefits. At the top of each page are symbols, which are codes indicating that the food fits into the category of antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, balances blood sugar, detoxifying, good for the heart, good for the skin, good for the brain, helps the digestive system, or immunity-boosting.
The book divides the foods up into food categories (kind of like chapters) and the pages are labeled with colors so you can quickly find the food group. The categories are vegetables (note: includes several sea vegetables); fruit; grains, bread and legumes; nuts and seeds; herbs and spices; and "others." In the "others" category are listed some animal products (eggs, yogurt, salmon, turkey, honey) as well as some fermented foods (apple cider vinegar, miso) and of course chocolate. There are also a few others such as the sweetener xylitol.
At the back of the book is an "Ailments Directory" in which you can look up a health problem and see what foods to use, and what pages to find them on. Following that is a glossary and index.
This book represents a lot of research. Though I have myself written a book on nutrition, this is packed with gems and pearls that are news to me. For example, I never knew that nori could slow down eye disease or that agar-agar suppresses the appetite. What an attractive, handy reference guide! And such a deal for only ten bucks! I plan to use this frequently in my meal planning.
