Lipsmackin' Vegetarian Backpackin' Review

My S/O and I took our first serious back-country trip in more than 15 years last week. We relied completely on this book for meal planning and food preparation. We were not disappointed. The recipes are all written in clear language, and are easy to follow. Packable trail instructions are available on-line, which helps with cooking in remote campsites. Of course, we could not try every single recipe -- but here are some of the best ones we tried. We had Olympus Oatmeal for breakfast every day. The Brunswick Stew was excellent, although it took a long time and lots of fuel to rehydrate the dried beans. The Vegan Super Hero Burritos were our favorite. The Whole-Food Granola Bars and Horse Thief GORP (we used unsweetened chocolate chips instead of carob chips) saw us through some long days of paddling and hiking. Our favorite snacks were the Energy Balls. We fought over the last one of those! I would warn others that many of the recipes call for prepackaged foods, such as Zatarain's Red Beans and Rice. People with specific health concerns should check the contents of these items before they use them. Fortunately, Zatarain's makes a low-sodium version of Red Beans and Rice, which we used. Otherwise, this is an excellent book. You can truly trust the recipes. I recommend it highly.

NOLS Cookery (NOLS Library) Review

I was introduced to an earlier edition of this book on my NOLSInstructors Course. The food we learned to prepare on the course wasTHE BEST I've ever eaten. NOLS has elevated food selection, storage and preparation to a science. This new edition is MUCH better than the old, with more great information about ration planning, equipment selection, cooking information and some NEW, TASTY recipes. Due to the use of bulk rations, the NOLS style of cooking may not be appropriate for occasional hikers going only for a weekend, but is a superb system for meal planning for longer trips. Anyone can become a GREAT backcountry chef with this guide! END

Another Fork in the Trail: Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes for the Backcountry Review

What Pirate Bean said. It's a great book with really great recipes. I got the Kindle version.
Added: I just made some of the Granola bars. I doubt if they will ever make it to the trail as they are too good to save. Much cheaper and much better than store bought.
Some ideas for the next book:
One suggestion I'd make is to make all the measurements in grams and make all recipes for the same number of people. Say, two.
It's much easier to divide or multipy recipies which are in grams. And with a spreadsheet, I can easily scale it for the number of servings I want. Even though I cook for one, I might want to prepare 5 bags of a meal to have some for the next trips. Cooking with grams instead of measuring spoons and cups is much easier and the recipes always turn out the same. It also means less dishes to wash.
An example of where grams work better. If the recipe calls for 1/2 cup of peanuts coursely chopped, it would be much easier to know I can put say 120 grams of peanuts in a plastic bag and crush them lightly with a rolling pin.
Personally, I watch the calories, weight of ingredients and carb/fat/protein balance very closely. It would be helpful to have nutrient information for each ingredient before cooking. It should be close enough after cooking.
The Kindle version doesn't have any pictures. I wouldn't mind having them even though they are in black and white.
