I am writing this because of the person who said the recipes were bland -- i couldn't believe it! So far I am not only impressed with this book, but genuinely thrilled to have found a really gourmet cookbook for balanced, healthy vegan meals. If I'm having people over they don't even notice there's no meat. It's so elegant, and the ingredients come from across the globe (you do have to carry a lot of groceries for some of them!). The issue I think someone would have is, one must have access to good health food and specialty stores and special produce. You have to have a food processor, blender, spice grinder etc. and the recipes have many elements so it takes a while to complete. But the results for me, so far, are wonderful. I wonder if the person who found it bland was using old spices and substituting ingredients? I am a trained chef, and I think the recipes are somewhat complicated, so can imagine that the average cook might find some of them time-consuming to reproduce adequately. If that is the case, my advice is, make sure you've got the necessary equipment, get fresh organic produce, grind your own spices (or use brand-new ones) and leave yourself an entire afternoon to do it right.

I have a VAST collection of vegetarian cookbooks. Recent changes in my lifestyle and schedule mandated that I learn to cook faster meals, so I ordered several books promising fast meals.This one delivers. While some of the recipes take a bit longer than 15 mintues, few take more than 30, and much of that time is cooking time, not preparation. Most of the ingredients are common, and a few, such as tahini and miso are less common, but not rare.15 Minute Gourmet: Vegetarian is divided into food groups such as soups, sauces, entrees, desserts, and appetizers.She includes some "basics" on nutrition and good health, as well as suggestions for balancing a healthy vegetarian diet.There are several complete menu suggetions and many recipes include a suggestion for a recipe that would make a good companion.There are even good ideas for setting up an organized kitchen to save MORE time. These are not Standard Amercian Diet foods made faster.These are very nutritious recipes with some ethnic diversity. Quite impressive for a collection that all can be assembled in moments, and many are even low in fat. For those who are curious, some recipes include...quick tomato sauces, pesto, orange-tahini sauce, cheesy vegetable spread, peanut dip, asian stew, quick pea soup, moroccan chickpea soup, fresh croutons, strawberry and blueberry soups, peach vinaigrette (and many others), thai cucumber salad, pasta with herbed ricotta and pine nuts, sweet and sour tofu, vegetable curry, nut burgers, vanilla poached pears, and chocolate dipped pineapple with raspberry sauce.In addition to all of these wonderful features, the layout is simple to read, directions are numbered and divided by steps (less confusing) and there are quite a number of full-page color photographs of the recipes.I highly recommend this book to those who are afraid that "quick" vegetarian food also has to mean "bland".Paulette, I commend you.

This is the best vegetarian cookbook I've ever used. Every dish I have made from this volume has been delicious, easy, and quick. While some of the recipes take a little planning ahead (ie, calling for cooked rice) the majority really do whip up in no time, and the combinations are creative, tasty and generally quite healthy. I find that with most cookbooks, I make a few recipes, and then lose interest because they are hit or miss. I've worked my way through at least half of the recipes in this book and always turn back to it. I would most highly recommend this cookbook for anyone who is low on time, but still wants interesting, delicious meals!

Some of these recipes are decent and I appreciate the advice on grilling fruit, but this book is for people who want unnecessarily elaborate recipes that often only nominally call for a grill. Many of the recipes require one to cook most of the meal on a stove or in an oven and then merely finish it on a grill. Potato pancakes, corn chowder, and burritos should not require a grill. Putting grill marks on a quesadilla does not improve the flavor, it only prolongs the cooking time.
I would have preferred something closer to Alice Waters' veggie books: detailed advice on how to choose and grill a variety of vegetables along with a handful of recipes for each one.
Look elsewhere if you want recipes that actually benefit from the use of a grill. Purchase this book if you absolutely must use a grill for all recipes come hell or high water.

As an adult I have been delivered from the Midwestern home of my childhood (meat and potatoes, cream of mushroom soup casseroles, ice cream every night before bed) to the beautiful land of Oregon where outdoor markets and co-op shopping are plentiful. Over the past ten years I have been exploring vegetarian options and a healthier lifestyle but it can be difficult to get beyond some of the complex recipes, expensive ingredients or bizarre taste combinations that seem to frequent vegetarian cookbooks and co-op shelves.
This wonderful book is geared to suit children, who can be notoriously picky eaters, but it also works well on an adult level. It is a great introduction to quick, simple vegetarian meals that introduce a few basic items without overwhelming the taste buds or the wallet. For both adults and children it is possible to move into a healthier lifestyle gradually, one recipe at a time, one meal per week...when we can sit down as a family and each find something new that we like on our plates then I think we become much more open to making healthy choices habitual.
The book also includes some great recipes for slumber parties, Halloween parties and many ideas for re-vamping typical kid foods (hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, brownies) into healthier options....

I LOVE this cookbook--it's the only one I have which is truly easy and brainless. (i.e, "throw these six things into the pot, and cook at med. heat for 20 min.") I became veg as a pre-teen, with a mother who hated to cook, so I never learned how to cook ANYTHING! Now, trying to go vegan, I need to know how to make healthy food for my husband, toddler and baby too! This book is awesome for people like me who don't know how to cook and don't have a lot of time to learn. If, however, you know how to cook/like to cook, you'd probably be better off with something more fancy. This IS, however, a GREAT starting-out, "idea book".

Cookin' Southern Vegetarian Style Review

I am a vegan yankee who has recently moved to the south. My vegan friendly southern boyfriend claims that everything I have made from this book captures the true essence of southern cooking. The first thing I made is the "Fried Chicken" Tofu & Gravy and he asked if I could make it again the next night! The recipes are very easy to understand and Ms. Jackson's tips and quips make the book very enjoyable to read. Most of the recipes can be made with ingredients most vegans already have around the house and are also very adaptable. I would strongly suggest that even if you only have a couple vegan cookbooks, and you like hearty, easy to make food, make this book a part of your library. Warning: the dishes in this book are quite addictive; make more than you think you will eat!

Though I am 23, older than the intended audience, my Mom bought me this book as a present. I was thrilled with it. Lauren Butts has created a fun and easy cookbook for anyone. I love the layout of the cookbook, it is divided into sections, and I enjoyed her nutritional info in the front of the book. Maybe it will inspire more teens to go veg.I found this cookbook full of great meatless recipes. I must warn strict vegetarians and vegans however, that most recipes contain dairy products, or eggs. There is a great recipe for "Nathan's Blueberry Breakfast Cupcakes", that is easy to make and tastes like store bought. However when I tried to get my three year old neighbor to eat one, he refused in horror. Other recipes that I have enjoyed making include: apricot chimichangas, Thai tofu Veggie Wrap-yum, Burrito Roll up, Veggie Pitas (Tastes the same as Wendy's veggie pita), Layered Nacho Salad, Mock Caesar Salad (in case you didn't know, Caesar Salad dressing is typically made with ANCHOVIES-fish=meat), Chilled Berry Soup-this is a fabulous recipe I made last summer when berries were plentiful, it is totally tasty and makes a great meal, TASTY FLATBREAD PIZZA WITH ARTICHOKE HEARTS!! This pizza was so unbelievably tasty, I have always been a bit wary of artichoke hearts, they just look kind of disgusting you know, but I was so shocked to discover their delicious taste!! Veggie Quesadillas were also fabulous. SPAGHETTI PIE is indeed a great dish, and I like to make it when serving non-vegetarians. It has been a hit with everyone so far. Tofu McNuggets are the absolute bomb. These recipes are only a fraction of the great ones in this book. I would highly recommend it to parents of new young vegetarians, or college students like myself who don't have that much time to cook. Some have opined that this book is full of recipes that are fattening, but I think most know, that us vegetarians are a mostly lean lot, and I can personally attest that the recipes aren't fattening. Thanks Lauren for creating a great book, it is indeed an oasis as far as Veg cookbooks go. Its great to have a cookbook that isn't full of really long, hard to find, expensive ingredients!

Comming from a Rasta I must admit that it is hard to find books that teach u to cook vegeterian and "ital" all at the same time. All though I already knew how to do both BEFORE I bought the book, It was still a nice gesture to see the recipes ranging from all over the carribean and African Decent. Some of these recepies include but are not limited to peas and rice (made with brown rice), herb dumpling, plenty of different soups, stews, tofu patties, derserts including Ital ice creams (mango, coconut, pawpaw...etc ), Breads made with no added perservaties or dairy products (fully vegeterian), and plenty of fresh fruit drinks as well. Including carrot juice (zion juice), pawpaw, freshly homemade punches, etc....Being a cook myself I must say that i was impressed by the context. These receipies are more or less like Cousines rather then just ordinary Vegeterian food. One can make good use from it. A meal that I have often found most deseriable in the book is the vegeterian stuffed bell peppers taken from the entree catagory, peas and rice/ sweet corn and rice taken from the side dish category, and steamed callaloo taken from the vegetable and side dish category. Having it washed down with some sweet coconut water or some other kind of NATURAL fruit (taken from the juice senction ) or vegetable juice makes a deserible meal that vegeterians, non vegeterians, Rastas, and non Rastas will feel priveledged to have enjoyed.

So far, every dish I've made from this cookbook has been delicious. Great basis for a recipe that you can tweak to your liking. I get a fresh box of mixed organic produce weekly (a surprise mix of what is fresh that week! in NY www.urbanorganic.net) and this is a great book to use when I have no idea what do with a certain veggie. Broken down by food (ie. soups, salads, etc) and a great index by specific vegetable/tofu etc as well. I love the way the paperback binding works so that the recipe stays flat and doesn't flip pages. Convenient and helps me stay creative and healthy!

I know ... you like meat. Me too. I grew up thinking beef is what's for dinner... and lunch and breakfast. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Or at least there wasn't. Now, I can't help but know better. Sure, there's the health reason in a physical (weight) sense. But I know now there are also environmental impacts, serious issues with how the meat is processed (from sanitary conditions to inhumane kills to worker abuses). But change is hard and meat is yummy, and going meatless means giving up something I love and that raised the right way can still be good for you. So I just refuse to do that. I don't hate vegetables; I just love meat. (Even Whoville would revolt if The Grinch carved roast beets instead of roast beast.) And those vegetarian books? They just DO NOT understand this. They are meatless on a mission -- perhaps delicious but not relatable to a guy who believes bacon just may be nature's candy. Kim O'Donnel asks us meat eaters to try something different: A break from meat once a week. And she has created an AMAZING set of tasty recipes that are good for our bodies and the planet too. I saw an early version of this book and now have the actual copy and to date and I can give the ultimate rave to the Falafel "Burgers," Slurpy Asian Noodle, and Pepita Crusted Tofu Cutlets: My family (all meat eaters) had them for dinner and we not only loved them and wanted them again -- we did NOT sneak a ham sandwich later because we were unfulfilled. Thanks Kim O'Donnel! THIS is change we meat eaters can believe in.

Nutrition information is included. The are a variety of recipes for using soy, wheat gluten, beans, grains, or vegetables to make burgers. If you have a problem with a particular ingredient you will find at least a few recipes that avoid using that ingredient. Included are recipes for side dishes. It is not high cuisine, but the recipes in this book are satisfying, tasty, easy and cheap.

Vive le Vegan: Simple, Delectable Recipes for the Everyday Vegan Family Review

...it is an informative book on healthy living. Besides numerous nutritious recipes for breakfast and brunch, baked goods, sauces, spreads, soups, main courses and other things, Burton provides advice for "Feeding Your Vegan Baby & Toddler" which is divided into age groups for 6-9 months, 9-12 months, 12-18 months, 18-24 months and 2+ years. In the section "Additional Notes for Feeding Baby" Burton discusses organic foods, prepackaged foods vs. home-made and food preparation tips.
Another helpful section that offers practical information is "Cooking Guides & Notes" where the author provides guides to cooking grains and beans and other "Cooking Notes." A comprehensive glossary is also useful.
Burton's support of hemp foods is a welcome addition to this recipe book and will hopefully encourage other cookbook authors to feature this nutritious food in their books. Not only does Burton include a section on "Hemp Foods," but she also mentions the importance of hemp in the Introduction.
"This is one of the few cookbooks you will see that features hemp products. Hemp seed nuts and nut butter provide complete protein and essential fatty acids that we can only get from our diet. Hemp seed oil is also rich in the essential fatty acids." (page 14)
Another interesting aspect of Burton's book involves the relatively small number of recipes that contain soy. Burton's reason for minimizing her use of soy is simple. "I suspect that many vegetarians and vegans rely a little too heavily on soy, and while I still include it in my family's diet, no one food should be consumed excessively." (page 14) Burton also includes numerous wheat-free recipes and recipes which feature a wheat-free option.
It's nice to see that vegan recipe books are becoming more popular. Vive le Vegan! is one of the better vegan cookbooks that I've seen as it not only offers a good selection of easy-to-make, nutritious meals and snacks, but it contains lots of other important information as well. Those who turned to vegetarianism due to a love of and respect for animals will want to get a copy of Burton's book and consider taking the next step to veganism. As Eric Marcus points out in the Foreword:
"Many people assume that concerns over cruelty can be addressed by becoming a lacto-ovo vegetarian, and buying free-range eggs and organic milk. Unfortunately, welfare standards for these foods are utterly lacking. And, just as troubling, these foods depend on slaughter every bit as much as their factory farmed counterparts. There is simply no such thing as animal agriculture without suffering and killing - the economics just don't allow it."

I'm not completely a vegan eater, but have been gradually cleaning up my eating over the past few years and really like having more fresh, healthy food in my diet. The one problem I'd had was that so many of the vegetarian and vegan recipes did take a long time to prepare. And while I'm an excellent cook, these days I have other things I want to put my attention on - like playing with my grandson and writing a book. So it was with complete utter delight that I received "Vegan Success" and started to use it. The crowning joy was when my husband, who told me when we got married that he didn't like and didn't eat vegetables, asked for seconds and sometimes even thirds. I think the success is that Susan and her partner are busy people too - and so they've really tested these recipes under real-life conditions. Anyway, I love being able to get genuinely healthy meals that my husband enjoys in a quick hurry. I'd recommend this book whether you love to cook or not - it's that straightforward.

The Vegetarian Low-Carb Diet: The Fast, No-Hunger Weightloss Diet for Vegetarians Review

While I'm neither a vegetarian or a vegan, I did want to have more vegetables in my low carb high protein diet. Rose Elliot did a great job on this book. The book is well balanced with readable information, very useful quick reference charts, menus, recipes, a few encouraging testimonies along the way. She does provide vegan alternatives to the lacto-vegetarian choices. And, best of all, it is an easy inexpensive way to lose weight on a low carb diet.
Her commonsense approach to recipes means you can make them with food typically on hand and quickly. Typically, most of the prep work can be done in a few minutes. And, you can expand on them as you learn the basic techniques. As I've worked my way through the book, one of my favorite recipes is her spaghetti squash using cream cheese with spices.
It literally only takes ten minutes to steam the squash in the microwave then fold in the cheese with spices. You can use already prepared cheese with herbs and spice mixes from the store. Or, you can use Philadelphia cream cheese and have your own ethnic flavors from Mexican to Indian, to Italian Garlic-Parmesan etc. And, you can use almost any steamed vegetable that has been thin sliced. It is a nice break from tomato sauces and there are never any leftovers.
This book is definitely a keeper!

in this case, the fact this book is old really only impacts the fact you can buy it used extremely cheap. this is my favorite cookbook. it's nice to have huge hardcover gourmet glossy picture books, but after buying one, it just sits around because all the recipes are very unhealthy and not to mention i cant find half the ingredients.
this cookbook, however without pictures or glossy pages, has honest commentary on the recipes, they're easy to make, easy to find the ingredients, and it's very easy to navigate.
and i got my copy for 83 cents! cant beat it. it'll cost you more to ship it to you then it will to buy it. highly reccomended for the practical vegetarian.

My S/O and I took our first serious back-country trip in more than 15 years last week. We relied completely on this book for meal planning and food preparation. We were not disappointed. The recipes are all written in clear language, and are easy to follow. Packable trail instructions are available on-line, which helps with cooking in remote campsites. Of course, we could not try every single recipe -- but here are some of the best ones we tried. We had Olympus Oatmeal for breakfast every day. The Brunswick Stew was excellent, although it took a long time and lots of fuel to rehydrate the dried beans. The Vegan Super Hero Burritos were our favorite. The Whole-Food Granola Bars and Horse Thief GORP (we used unsweetened chocolate chips instead of carob chips) saw us through some long days of paddling and hiking. Our favorite snacks were the Energy Balls. We fought over the last one of those! I would warn others that many of the recipes call for prepackaged foods, such as Zatarain's Red Beans and Rice. People with specific health concerns should check the contents of these items before they use them. Fortunately, Zatarain's makes a low-sodium version of Red Beans and Rice, which we used. Otherwise, this is an excellent book. You can truly trust the recipes. I recommend it highly.

Some background - This past mid-April, my husband and I attended the 5-Day McDougall Program in Santa Rosa, CA. Colleen was there as one of the chefs giving a cooking demo/lesson to help us learn how to cook food for our new healthy diet. My husband has always been an omnivore and swore he would never give up meat (but he was willing to attend the 5-day session with me). I have been what I call a fat 'imperfect vegan' for over 20 years (cheese, butter and oil were my vices). Enter Colleen. She prepared a few dishes out of this new book and passed around servings for us to eat. My hubby said: Babe, if we can eat like this all the time, I'll never miss the meat. And I agreed. We adopted a lowfat vegan diet that week, and have not looked back. I have cooked several of the recipes that Colleen gave us that week (all from the book) and they are all yummy. I have ordered the book because I want more. Colleen, I hope you are reading this: You are a wonderful, witty, talented chef. My husband and I loved your your cooking, and your wonderful sense of humor. Dr McDougall, Mary, Jeff, and Doug helped us adopt this new healthy diet, but you definitely sealed the deal. The 'No-queso Quesadillas' have been our go-to snack when we need a little something-something, now! Since April 15, I have effortlessly lost 15 lbs and my hubby has lost 12. Thank you SO much! We hope to see you again!

175 Hot & Spicy Vegetarian Recipes Review

This is my favorite vegetarian cookbook by far, and I own about 20 different ones. So far, every single dish was wonderfully tasty, the measurements were correct, and the instructions were clear and easy to follow.
The thing I like most about this book is, that the dishes are not just your usual pasta with vegies, or a collection of salads and soups, that you can find in your usual boring vegetarian cookbooks. This book has truly unique recipes inspired from all around the world, some spicy, some hot, all of them with interesting and new flavors.
I am a vegetarian for 16 years now, but this book brought new fun and spice into my kitchen.
The only thing that I probably should mention is, although the title suggests that you burn your tongue with every dish, that is not the case (although no one prohibits you from using a little extra pepper when wanted). All dishes are well spiced and seasoned, but only a few are burning hot spicy, so you don't have to be scared of these recipes if you usually don't eat spicy.
