Dinner Is In The Jar: Quick and Easy Dinner Mixes in Mason Jars or Mylar Bags (bw) Review

I have over forty cookbooks, most supposedly geared for using long term food storage. Unfortunately, most use many fresh ingredients which may not be available. That leaves a couple of options, convert the fresh ingredients into dried ones or don't use the recipe. The great thing about this book is that it uses all long term food storage items. In addition to that the instructions are easy to follow and the food tastes great. I made up a couple of the dishes and shared them with a group of 50 people. They all loved them. This book embraces a whole new way of meal planning. Thank you! I can't wait to share this with my friends and family.

I Can't Believe It's Food Storage Review

This is a book geared toward, but not limited to, the Mormon population and it focuses on the products available from their church canneries. If you use it understanding these factors you can get a lot out of it. The recipes are basic family-friendly fare; delicious but not gourmet. I found the book, and Crystal's website, shortly after buying several food storage items that I planned to store for 20-30 years, and then throw out and replace if I didn't have to use them. The money was spent just to have a back-up, but now I'm using at least one or two items on a daily basis and I plan to use all of them and replenish as I go along. This is a much better use of my money and storage space.

There are positive and negatives about this book. First, the positive aspects:
You will learn how to actually USE your stored food on a daily basis. This really is the focus of the book and the web-site, not how to survive without power. Not only will you save money by not wasting the food you're storing, but you'll save money because food storage is generally cheaper than fresh foods. All the food storage I have uses no preservatives or artificial flavor or color enhancers, so I can use it as a convenience food without the additives found in many convenience foods.
The recipes are organized according to the type of stored food, i.e., powdered milk, powdered eggs, whole wheat, dried beans, dried vegetables and fruits. The layout makes it easy to find ways to use specific types of foods.
One interesting idea is to use dried beans to replace some or all of the fat in baked items (I prefer using half beans and half oil or butter because the flavor and texture are better). Crystal also provides several recipes for using magic mix, a concoction of powdered milk, butter, and flour that is very useful to have on hand.
The negatives include:
The black and white photos are dark and of poor quality. They really add nothing to the book.
There are several editing errors throughout the book. These include several misspellings, a misplaced subheading, and an ingredient mix-up between two recipes. I noticed these mistakes while doing a quick scan of the book. Spell-check should have picked up most of the spelling errors, and a careful proof-reader should have noticed everything else.
I would have preferred more recipes and a lot less of the first three chapters, but that is just a personal preference.
Overall I am satisfied with this book. Its focus is on using your food storage on a daily basis and not just during emergencies; there is no better system for rotating your food storage! It has changed the way I look at food storage and use it and I am saving money on groceries because of this book.

NOLS Cookery (NOLS Library) Review

I was introduced to an earlier edition of this book on my NOLSInstructors Course. The food we learned to prepare on the course wasTHE BEST I've ever eaten. NOLS has elevated food selection, storage and preparation to a science. This new edition is MUCH better than the old, with more great information about ration planning, equipment selection, cooking information and some NEW, TASTY recipes. Due to the use of bulk rations, the NOLS style of cooking may not be appropriate for occasional hikers going only for a weekend, but is a superb system for meal planning for longer trips. Anyone can become a GREAT backcountry chef with this guide! END

Vegan Unplugged: A Pantry Cuisine Cookbook and Survival Guide Review

I had the good fortune to spot this new title as I was buying another cookbook, and bought it as well to have on hand in case of power outages. But I was curious about the recipes, so even with the power on, I've been having some fun trying them out.
The recipe titles are clever and intriguing, but the main thing is that they're simple and quick to make. While lining up the ingredients, it was fun to realize that I already had most of them in the pantry.
Last night, I made the Technicolor Dream Salad. This salad is ingenious and addictive and easy to make, although it does taste best served chilled, so refrigerate it if you have power (or put it in the ice chest for awhile if you don't). I also tried the Curry in a Hurry and the White Bean-Spinach Fritters with the same delicious results.
I'd definitely recommend this book to have on hand for emergencies, but it's also fantastic just to cook everyday meals from even when the power's on. The book's so inexpensive, I bought extra copies to give as gifts to friends.

The Student Cookbook: 200 Cheap and Easy Recipes for Food, Drinks and Snacks (Cookery) Review

This is a really good book. The reason it's a four and not a five is because the 50+ drink recipes are alcholic, and there's only 7 smoothies! There's no pictures in the book, but the text is easy to follow. It doesn't have an index or a table of contents, instead it has a quick guide page which are categorized into "Really Hungry", "Date", "No Money" ...
I would definitely suggest first making the "Very Difficult Muffins" and the "Brownies for Dummies" when you get this book. The "Italian Grilled Cheese Sandwiches" is a nice spruced up basic.
Get it if have some spare $$. Also look at: How to Repair Food
-TLU student
*FYI: For those who don't know, with most baking recipes you can replace half of the oil with (healthier) apple sauce.

How to Live on Wheat Review

I recieved this book and sat down to read it ...it was kind of small, and I thought I'd be disappointed. Boy, was I surprised! This book has such complete and good information that i am sure a person could learn to live, food wise, quite well with it alone. It goes through all the grains a person might want to use, how to take care of them, cook them, make yeast, sprouting, recipes and an excellent resouce guide to help you find the grains you need.
I have half a dozen recipe books on using grains, and have been disappointed in each of them. This is one of the best books ever on this subject.
I would urge anyone who is interested in grains or self reliance to read this book!

Where's Mom Now That I Need Her: Surviving Away from Home Review

The worst thing I can say about this book is the title. They completely missed their market when they titled this book "Where's Mom when I need her". While marketing to a college student may seem smart it is only a small piece of the market this book should have targeted. In reality this book is the most aptly targeted to the stay at home mom who is trying to live frugally and save money. Many moms out there are buying books such as "Miserly Meals" and "Tightwad Gazette" in an attempt to find ways to save money and make simple meals for their family. Also many of us did not grow up learning to bake from scratch and how to make our own mixes for things. This book is actually the best one out there for that purpose. It should have had the word Frugal in the title or Cheap/Inexpensive and it should have been marketed more for the moms than the kids. I bought this book years ago as a young mom because my mother never taught me these things. We never learned how to cook or bake or any of those things. This is absolutely hands down the only book you will ever need for saving money and learning the basics of baking, cooking. Excellent book. Editors totally dropped the ball on who to market to and probably lost the author untold dollars as a result but nevertheless the book is amazing!!!

Cooking Outside the Pizza Box: Easy Recipes for Today's College Student Review

I originally bought this book for myself, and found it to be too introductory for me, so I gave it to my brother, who despite being older than me still calls me to ask things like how you mash a potato. The recipes are very easy to read, making no assumptions about previous knowledge, and they utilize store-bought pre-prepared ingredients (the author is especially fond of frozen potsticker dumplings) in a way that is helpful to college students, although I thought occasionally the scratch alternative would have been no more difficult and probably cheaper and better tasting.
What I love best about the book is the way it is organized. Recipes that require no cooking or are microwave-only are marked with big icons on the page, and while the recipes are organized by meal or food type, like most books, the book also contains multiple tables of contents that group the recipes differently--vegetarian, microwavable, appropriate for a date, seasonally, etc.--and even has one set of listings that put together recipes for a complete meal. While not particularly elaborate (as most of the recipes are pretty simple anyway) I love this feature, because matching flavors can be particularly difficult for a new cook, and for any cook a recipe book can be unhelpful in planning a meal if you don't kind of already know what you want.
The first section of the book is also really good for first-timers because it goes over the basics of setting up, cleaning, and sharing a kitchen. It provides lists of basic equipment and the basic ingredients you should always have on hand, and this list is in general pretty sensitive to the limitations of dorm sizes and mini-fridges. It even gives cleaning instructions for some of the less obvious cleaning challenges in the kitchen. I thought the list of things to discuss and agree on with roommates regarding kitchen use was particularly helpful. Lastly, the book itself is well-designed, being spiral-bound rather than a traditional paperback, so that it lays flat easily while staying open to the same page hands-free. This seems like a silly note, but I have a lot of cookbooks, some with a similar target market as this one, and I've had to waste a lot of time copying recipes down onto other paper or recipe cards just because I needed both hands and the book kept closing itself or flipping to another page.
In summary, a great book for someone who doesn't know anything about cooking. Would make a great high school graduation gift perhaps made more interesting by pairing it with some of the basic kitchen tool necessities listed in the first few chapters of the book.
