Not Your Mother's Casseroles (NYM Series) Review

I just received this book from Amazon, and I'll try to come back and add more comments as I try a few more recipes, but I just had to speak up to counter Mr. Protein who was so very disappointed with his purchase.
If you're looking for Salty Meat Goop With Crunch On Top (usually including a can of Cream O' Campbell's), this is likely not your book. However, if you're looking for comfort food to stretch your culinary repertoire while still pleasing your family's palate; or if you'd like to do more cooking with healthful ingredients, would like to know what exactly to do with some of the less mainstream veggies at your grocery store, or love the simplicity of one-dish meals on busy nights-- check it out.
So far, all I've made is the Asian Cabbage Rolls with Spicy Pork-- but this healthy riff on the Chinese friend dumplings that we (guiltily) adore was immediately filed in the "make this again SOON" category, and it's definitely whetted my appetite to try more.
I'm also particularly excited to have this on my shelf because of my familiarity with Ms. Durand's reputation and engaging work as the managing editor at thekitchn.com. I don't buy cookbooks often, but this one looks to be well worth the money and shelf space.

Crazy for Casseroles: 275 All-American Hot-Dish Classics (Non) Review

I hate to disagree with the glowing reviews for this book but since I relied on the other reviews I had read to buy this book, I thought maybe a differing view would be useful. I am a seasoned cook and can say that this is one of the most poorly written cookbooks I have ever cooked from. I have made 3 recipes thus far. All have had major proportion issues and have lacked flavor. Even corrections I made as I went based on previous experiences could not save these recipes. If you like food that is basic in flavor (kinda like standard cafeteria fare) then you will probably like this book. If you like flavor in your food, then I suggest not buying this one.

Casserole Crazy: Hot Stuff for Your Oven Review

What can I say about Casserole Crazy except that it's gotten me into the kitchen and cooking? I'm hardly a cook, and my usual meals come from takeout food or my freezer, but I was intrigued by the blog enough to check out the cookbook and I'm so glad I did. So far, I've made two recipes, the first being the garlic mac and cheese that I made with some friends. We wound up with two pans of it (substituting rotini for elbow macaroni) and both were gone by the time we went to sleep. It was delicious. Then on my own I made the Tater Tot Turkey Casserole and was reminded a) how delicious tater tots are and b) what a fun, simple meal this was.
There's such a wide variety of casseroles, for the food snob and the starving artist and everyone in between, and Farris's fun attitude infuses her recipes. I really like that anyone can make these recipes, and trust me, if I can make them, anyone can. I look forward, especially as the weather is freezing out, to cranking up my oven and trying more of Farris's inventive casseroles, as well as tweaking them since it's so easy to do. Now, armed with my giant new glass casserole pan, I'm also officially casserole crazy!

The Casserole Queens Cookbook: Put Some Lovin' in Your Oven with 100 Easy One-Dish Recipes Review

This casserole cookbook provides some good information regarding this type of dish. Crystal Cook and Sandy Pollock - the casserole queens included about 100 recipes. The book contains some family classics like beef stroganoff and four cheese pasta, savory casserole, such as osso bucco, prime rib, lighter casseroles, and sides, breakfast, desserts and some from scratch recipes including pizza dough and pie dough.
They talk about different casserole dishes/containers, how to make a towel apron, what to have to be prepared both in the pantry and with equipment. They give good simple practical advice such as how to cut calories and freezing tips. There are icons included for the recipes: freezes well, time saving short cuts, vegetarian friendly, Crystal's favorite or story, and also Sandy's. There are only a few pictures of the dishes in a 16 page color section; but these are simple recipes and the missing pictures are not critical to your success.
Our family favorites have been the Spam casserole try it, if you like the taste of ham, you might be surprised at what a good thing Spam is; and the ziti bake, which not only tastes good but also contains 5 cups-1 ½ pounds of zucchini- for those of you with gardens or generous friends. I have also used other varieties of squash successfully.
This is not a book for the confirmed gourmet cook, instead it is a cookbook for those who would like to prepare good wholesome meals, possibly freezing some and have some agreeable family fare.
