Cheap. Fast. Good Review

Everyone seems to like this book more than I do so I took a second look at it. I opened up to the chapter "Everyday Entrees". The first recipe for Gayle's Country-Style Steak does sound good, but it has to simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Not exactly "Fast". Looked at the next recipe Texas Cowboy's Pie and it calls for "shredded already-cooked beef" for which there is a recipe on another page. I took a look at that recipe and it would take more than 3 hours to cook. The 3rd recipe in this chapter is Beefed-Up Chinese Burritos. It calls for "Flexible Mexican Filling" for which there is a recipe on another page. You get the idea. I notice that these recipes that are needed for some of the general recipes are in a chapter titled "Budget-Minded Batch Cooking" that's at the end of all the chapters with recipes for dinners. So if so you decide to try this book, I'd suggest starting with that chapter. Each of those recipes does tell you which recipes require them. The recipes must be good if so many people wrote positive reviews, so take that into consideration when making your final decision as to whether or not to buy this book.

Simply Sugar and Gluten-Free: 180 Easy and Delicious Recipes You Can Make in 20 Minutes or Less Review

I've been gluten free for about 6 years. I have many gluten free cookbooks, but I was hooked on the promise of simplicity for the recipes in this book. I like the idea of quick, healthy meals for my family that also meet my dietary limitations. Tonight, I tried the mac and cheese and meatloaf. Both were delicious, and the family liked them as well! The recipes are fairly simple, and turned out very tasty. My only "complaint" - which I hope really isn't seen as a complaint but more of a fact - is that the 20 minutes part of the title means preparation time; it does not include cook time. But regardless, I look forward to trying more of the recipes.
As many other reviewers have mentioned, the tips are extremely helpful. There are tips for how to buy dried fruit, storing chickpeas in the fridge so homemade hummus will already be chilled, making double batches and freezing, etc. I love the idea of baking a big batch of brown rice or making extra quinoa and freezing for later use. I have a very active family, and this kind of meal planning for the sake of convenience is huge for us.
The only real negative for me is that Ms. Green's flour mix contains bean flour. I have not been able to tolerate the taste of bean flour in most other recipes (or its effects on my tummy if I eat too much). I seem to have a keen sense for the taste, and have only found a few recipes containing bean flour that I like (one is Bette Hagman's zucchini bread with pineapple, the other is Erin McKenna's Apple Cinnamon Toasties, which are both super yummy!)The mac & cheese I made tonight called for the bean flour mix, but I used sweet rice flour instead, and the recipe still turned out great.
If you have a dairy sensitivity, there are quite a few recipes that call for milk, cream, or cheese of some sort. For those with nut allergies, there are also recipes calling for nuts. In both cases, there are often notes at the end suggesting substitutions to make the recipes dairy or nut free, which I think is awesome! Many recipes are labelled vegan, dairy free, or egg free, to help chefs isolate recipes that will work best for them.
For those who have been disappointed that this book does in fact contain some sugar (in the form of palm sugar from coconut), you may want too look up cookbooks for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, like Grain Free Gourmet or Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. South Beach also contains many, many great and healthy recipes. Just remember the healthiest recipes are going to be those that use whole foods, not artificial sweeteners, which some SB recipes call for.
The bottom line for SS & GF is that is is simple, easy to follow, has an overall healthy approach, and a great variety of recipes. I will be using it quite frequently!

The Best 30-Minute Vegetarian Recipes Review

I am not a vegetarian but I do like to incorporate meatless meals a few times a week for health and to save on my food budget. Sometimes getting variety with vegetarian dishes is a challenge so I like this cookbook for the many recipes it offers. I don't care for tofu, but while there are plenty of recipes that include it, there are many that don't so I was able to find several that appealed to me.
The salad section was my favorite with some unique offerings such as Hint of Orange Salad, Wild Rice Salad, Asian Salad, and several pasta salads including Pasta With Brussels Sprouts. I made the Spanish Salad with red onion, olives, and hard boiled eggs among other fresh ingredients and will enjoy having it again for lunches. I also found several soups I'd like to try such as broccoli cheddar.
Other recipe categories include appetizers, soups, main dishes, side dishes, and desserts. Color photos are also included which is always a plus. The recipes are easy enough for a novice cook, and ingredients used seem to be those easily found at larger grocery stores.
The recipes aren't vegan so they do include dairy and eggs and one can easily add meat if desired which makes this a good cookbook for anyone, vegetarian or not.
I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited, nor was a positive review required.

Bite Me: A Stomach-Satisfying, Visually Gratifying, Fresh-Mouthed Cookbook Review

I love, love, love buying cookbooks with pretty pictures and fun stories of how recipes came to be. The downside? I don't really enjoy cooking and I'm not very good at it.
I bought Bite Me (Great name for a cookbook!) at the Border's closing sale for 60% off. It definitely filled my criteria for great food pictures and there is lots of witty banter and snark by the co-authors who are also sisters. Almost every recipe comes with a story of how it was created - whether to replicate a favorite restaurant find or to bring take out home. There are also fun little random quotes throughout - called "Bite Me Bit's" - "I believe if life gives you lemons, make lemonade...then find someone that life gave vodka to and have a party" - Ron White, comedian, for example. I really appreciated the sense of humor because cooking stresses me out so it's nice to keep in mind that it's supposed to be fun.
I decided to try a few recipes and write a review rather than adding yet another cookbook to collect dust. I picked two that I was fairly familiar with (soup & shrimp), one I would love to perfect (scones) and one that seemed difficult (crackers). Here's the rundown on how I did. Your results may vary, of course, depending on your level of expertise.
Honey Baked Coconut Shrimp - Shrimp dipped in honey then rolled in a panko crumb/coconut mix and baked in the oven. Super simple and baked so it's healthier than regular fried coconut shrimp. It was slightly messy dipping in the honey then the coconut mixture but no big deal.
Nitpick - The panko crumb/coconut topping had very little flavor. I would add more seasoning the next time. The dipping sauce of apricot jam, Heinz Chili sauce and dijon mustard was delicious!
Karen's Kitchen catastrophe level: Low - I burned my finger after dipping the first shrimp in the honey (had to warm the honey in the microwave) but learned my lesson.
Final verdict: Easy - a tad messy and needed some extra zing but good.
Restorative Roasted Vegetable Soup: A soup made with roasted sweet potato, carrots, zucchini, pepper, mushrooms and rosemary - add chicken and bowtie pasta. This was SOOOO good. Tasted really rich and flavorful despite only using some rosemary when roasting the veggies. Roasting the veggies makes the process a bit longer but it's simple - just chop and pop in the oven and walk away. Come back throw it all in a pot with the broth, chicken and pasta. Done!
Karen's Kitchen catastrophe level: Low. Soup is one of the few things I can cook. Basic chicken soup anyway... and I roast veggies all the time so I felt pretty confident with this one.
Final verdict: It's a keeper.
Spot On Chocolate Chip Scones: I love scones but they seem really daunting to bake for myself. I tried one recipe last month and they came out pretty good but these....mmmmmm! I used dark chocolate chips instead of the semi sweet and O.M.G. Uh-maz-ing!
Karen's Kitchen catastrophe level: Medium. The dough is very loose and crumbly so if you don't know what your doing (me) you may overwork it and make a tough scone. Also this made a much larger batch than the previous recipe I tried and I got a little panicky working with that large of a batch of dough.
Final verdict: A definite keeper! These came out so tender and delicious. They were probably one of the best things I've ever baked. (I only bake a few times a year so that's not saying much - but still) This recipe might give newbies a little trouble until your used to the dough texture but it's well worth it.
Asiago cheese crackers: This recipe scared me the most. Crackers?? I can make crackers?? They came out really good and my hubby pronounced them a "high end cheeze-it" They look pretty much like the picture in the book but I should have cut them a little thinner so the were crispier.
Karen's Kitchen catastrophe level: Medium to high. The dough was very dry and crumbly. The recipe calls for you to mix flour, grated cheese, butter and sour cream then roll into a log and refrigerate for two hours before slicing/baking. I wasn't sure if I should add more sour cream to bind it together more or try to maybe knead it together after it was mixed. I was afraid of overworking it. It did solidify in the fridge but I had trouble cutting the dough into 1/8 inch slices without crumbling. I mushed them back together and baked anyway. I admit that I started to stress and go into panic mode but they ended up tasting really good. The thicker ones weren't as crispy obviously and had to be baked a little longer.
Final verdict: Easy with very few steps but for a cooking newbie like me I wasn't sure if I was doing it right and it did stress me out a tad but I can't complain about the finished product which tasted great. The recipe also includes a Creamy White Bean Spread that I will make today to go with the crackers.
So - I would definitely recommend this one just to read because it's fun on that level but it also includes a lot of great recipes that are quick and healthy (favoring baked over fried & with lots of fresh ingredients).
Sections are divided into Appetizers (Grab Me) Soups (Spoon Me) unDress Me (salads), Veggies (Respect Me), Pasta and Rice (Crave Me), Poultry (Gobble Me), Fish (Catch Me), Meat (Meet Me), Brunch (Join Me) and Dessert (Fork Me) so everything is covered.
I can't wait to try a few more of the recipes and see if I can push myself a little more when it comes to cooking.

Veganomicon Review

First off, the food in this book is amazing. Vegan With a Vengeance was super great, but this is the friggin' BOMB!
Aside from the incredible food, the product description doesn't mention that the first part of the book is a great (and funny) read about HOW to cut and prepare different vegetables, how to cook different grains, etc...for someone like me, pretty invaluable stuff. Also cool if you're getting this for your "weird" vegan kid that is just learning to cook.
Also,, the icons are a big help (an icon tells you if you can make the meal under 45 min -or way less, another icon tells you if you can find everything at your regular Vons-type market, if there's soy, etc...)
The other review made a comment about the title, which I think is total genius. Then again, I get the HP Lovecraft/Evil Dead reference. What else could you call the "ultimate vegan cookbook" besides the "Veganomicon"??
Not only does this book have great recipes, but it will totally add ideas to your cooking arsenal. After making the "Black Bean Burgers", I am never buying packaged veggie burgers again!
p.s. do yourself a favor and make the "Leek and Bean Cassoulet with Biscuits".

Caribbean Vegan: Meat-Free, Egg-Free, Dairy-Free Authentic Island Cuisine for Every Occasion Review

Caribbean Vegan is already one of my favorite cookbooks. In this day and age of finding recipes on the internet, I can't encourage you enough to own this book for yourself. It's full of rich, satisfying recipes, with easy to follow instructions. I was new to both eating and cooking Caribbean cuisine, and I learned some great cooking techniques along the way. Some of my favorite recipes include the rum cake, lentil patties, split pea soups, and of course the tofish. The book includes everything from the basic sauces to cocktails to breads to seitan ham, etc. Taymer has experience in the food industry and it shows. She creates complex flavors in an authentic way. No other vegan or vegetarian cookbooks have these recipes, and if you live in the U.S. you may not even have access to the homestyle recipes that Taymer revised.
You will love these foods, do not delay! (Did I mention the gorgeous photos?)

Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World: 75 Dairy-Free Recipes for Cupcakes that Rule Review

I love love LOVE this book. The recipes are simple and perfect, every time; I have had VCTOtW for about a month and a half now, and despite at least weekly bakings, haven't had a single recipe fail yet. Not one. Since I bought it I seriously can't stop baking and am beginning to fear for my waistline!
I would like to second another reviewer who pointed out that the recipes don't ask you to use egg replacers or other "substitutions" common in vegan baking (usually because someone is trying to veganize a non-vegan recipe); instead, the recipes are just designed vegan from the ground up, and call for simple ingredients that anyone would have (oil, baking powder, etc.). Also, there are tons of beautiful color pictures of finished cupcakes throughout, which is one of the most important things about a cookbook, to me. Then, too, they suggest enough variations on each cupcake recipe (there's 6 suggested ways to dramatically alter the chocolate cupcake recipe alone) that this book will keep you occupied for quite a long time.
Since every baker likes a little external validation, here's mine: I have gotten absolute raves on every cupcake I have made so far, and most of these raves were from non-vegans who were comparing my vegan cupcakes with regular [non-vegan] cupcakes. For example, last night I fed a chocolate cupcake with cookies 'n cream frosting (vegan buttercream frosting with Newman's O's mixed in... this is a recipe from the book, obviously) to a friend who didn't just enjoy it, but was absolutely WOWED. "Geeze, it's amazing what they're doing without dairy or eggs these days; these are better than regular cupcakes" was one comment that I particularly appreciated because most vegan desserts can taste good, but in my experience it's the rare vegan dessert that can taste identical or even BETTER than the regular omni thing.
I would recommend this book to anyone, vegans and omni's alike, because even if you're not vegan (or lactose intolerant), the cupcakes taste fabulous. The recipes are so simple they're basically idiot-proof, and I have seriously never in my life had better chocolate cupcakes than the ones I made from this book: moist and fluffy and ooh... just perfect. And I'm not even a chocolate person.
Anyway, do yourself (and everyone in your life who will be eating your baked goods) a favor and buy this wonderful book! I'd give it 10 stars if they'd let me...

Vegan on the Cheap: Great Recipes and Simple Strategies that Save You Time and Money Review

The recipes in this book really are inexpensive to make. The book starts with about 28 pages of advice on ways to save money on food, and the rest of the book is devoted to recipes. I have tried the following so far, and thought they were great:
Cheezee sauce (excellent!)
Comfort loaf (Best vegan 'meatloaf' I've ever had)
Baked ziti (Delicious; I was amazed at how well the tofu worked in this dish)
Mexican rice and bean bake (Today's dinner - also outstanding)
The one caveat I have about the book is that some of the directions appear to be incomplete. This is okay for experienced cooks that can just figure out how to make it work. But someone with less experience and know-how could possibly end up wasting money by trying recipes that won't work.
For example, the Cheezee sauce recipe tells you to combine some ingredients in a saucepan. Then it says, "Turn the heat on medium and whisk in the soy milk. Cook, stirring, until the sauce thickens, about 1 minute." This makes it sound like you are supposed to just turn on the heat and have the pot on the stove for 1 minute. What you have to do is bring the mixture to boiling and then cook it for about 1 minute longer. So, the author forgot to mention the part about bringing the mixture to boiling. If you've never made a sauce this way before, you might throw it out if you follow the directions, because it's not useful in that watery state.
In the Mexican rice and bean bake, the recipe involves partially cooking some rice on the stovetop, and then putting it in the oven to cook the rest of the way. I think that there is something missing from the directions there as well, because I cooked and baked as directed, and had to double my baking time to cook the rice completely. (And, no, there is nothing wrong with my oven.) I presume that it was supposed to be cooked a little longer on the stovetop first, but again, the directions just indicated that you were to return the stovetop mixture to boiling, and then dump it in the pan to go into the oven. I suspect you were supposed to boil it for a little while on the stovetop first.
The food tastes great. She really does a lot with inexpensive ingredients. (One of the things I liked about this cookbook was that she only asks you to have a few non-standard ingredients on hand, unlike most vegan cookbooks, which expect that you are secretly running an international grocery store in your kitchen.) But considering I tried 4 recipes so far, and 2 of them had inaccurate directions, I'm a little concerned about the rest of the book. I'll just have to remember to be more vigilant when making these recipes.
I think this is particularly important for this book, because I am sure that this book was geared, in part, to the 'starving students' and other new vegans who want to eat vegan on a budget. In general, younger people have less cooking experience and therefore will be less likely to know how to 'fix' these recipes. Also, I have a few of Robertson's other cookbooks, and haven't ever come across this problem so far. So, I'm disappointed for that reason, too.
But, man, that Mexican rice and bean bake is REALLY good.

SOS The Six O'Clock Scramble to the Rescue: Earth-Friendly, Kid-Pleasing Dinners for Busy Families Review

I have been cooking with Aviva's first Scramble cookbook for two years now and my whole family has enjoyed her recipes.
When I saw she had a new cookbook out, I requested it immediately but was a bit unsure whether it would live up to the first one. I should not have worried - I think this one is even better! There were so many recipes I loved that I have too many pages to dog-ear, and I anticipate this being used weekly in our home for a long time.
Best improvements:
1. Better organization - While still categorized by seasons (which I find extremely helpful), now the fish/meat/pasta recipes are put together so that you can easily select from the right style of meal. At the beginning of each 'season' every recipe is indexed by page number so you can easily flip right to it.
2. Side dish recipes are now included in each recipe, instead of having to flip to the back of the book
3. Very helpful side-bar articles and tips (and very up to date - including the issue of BPA in canned goods, composting tips, and lunch/snack ideas)
4. Really good recipes! There is great variety in here with a focus on lots of fruits/vegetables and interesting spices. Nothing bland or boring.
I highly recommend this cookbook!!!

Ultimate Juicing: Delicious Recipes for Over 125 of the Best Fruit & Vegetable Juice Combinations Review

Allow me to be blunt--I don't buy into the whole health-craze notion that juicing is the silver bullet for ultimate physical health and spiritual awakening. I'm just a no-frills, moderately healthy woman who wants to enjoy the luxury of fresh-squeezed juices in her own kitchen without having to pay a gourmet price for them. To that end, I splurged on a good but affordable juice extractor and bought this book to learn the basics of making homemade juices. As with everything I purchase online, I checked out other customers' reviews of various juicing information and cookbooks beforehand, and Rodnitzky's book appeared to contain what I needed without too much fru-fru, "juicing will change your life" craziness.
What I found when the book arrived was that not only does Ultimate Juicing provide all the basic information one needs to make healthy and delicious juices at home, it also avoids the pitfalls of hard-sell promotional content("these recipes will work best with such-and-such brand juice extractor") and extravagant expectations for juicing's health and/or spiritual benefits. In 8 concise, sensible chapters, Rodnitzky describes the nutritional value of fresh-made juices; proper selection, preparation, and storage of produce; juicer selection (without the hard-sell: the juicers are described in terms of operation with brand names mentioned only as examples); and recipes for basic, health-boosting, exotic, and alcoholic juice drinks.
The core information and excellent variety of recipes easily offset the silliness of the recipe titles, and the comprehensive index makes the book a handy reference for everyday use in the kitchen. I would recommend this book for veteran and novice juicers alike, regardless of their physical fitness or spiritual level.

This is one of the best cookbooks I have ever owned. The recipes are very do-able, delicious, healthy and filling! The New Moosewood Cookbook (Mollie Katzen's Classic Cooking) Review

Absolutely fabulous recipies that are extremely simple to prepare. The names of the vegetarian dishes are inventive and somehow make the recipes really come to life.
If you're like me, you like eating healthy and great-tasting food, but dread food preparation time and following hundreds of directions and end up missing a crucial step that ruins the dish. Some people are born with a gift for whipping up recipes from their own imaginations, but I'm not one of those people.
The only reason this book doesn't get 5 stars from me is that it should have been spiral bound. It's almost impossible to keep the book open on a kitchen counter unless you put heavy objects (very heavy) on both pages or you go an buy one of those gizmos that hold books open.
Nonetheless, this is my favorite recipe book. My kitchen is full of them, but this is the only one that almost never has any dust on it like the other ones. :-)

Casserole Crazy: Hot Stuff for Your Oven Review

What can I say about Casserole Crazy except that it's gotten me into the kitchen and cooking? I'm hardly a cook, and my usual meals come from takeout food or my freezer, but I was intrigued by the blog enough to check out the cookbook and I'm so glad I did. So far, I've made two recipes, the first being the garlic mac and cheese that I made with some friends. We wound up with two pans of it (substituting rotini for elbow macaroni) and both were gone by the time we went to sleep. It was delicious. Then on my own I made the Tater Tot Turkey Casserole and was reminded a) how delicious tater tots are and b) what a fun, simple meal this was.
There's such a wide variety of casseroles, for the food snob and the starving artist and everyone in between, and Farris's fun attitude infuses her recipes. I really like that anyone can make these recipes, and trust me, if I can make them, anyone can. I look forward, especially as the weather is freezing out, to cranking up my oven and trying more of Farris's inventive casseroles, as well as tweaking them since it's so easy to do. Now, armed with my giant new glass casserole pan, I'm also officially casserole crazy!

The Northwest Vegetarian Cookbook: 200 Recipes That Celebrate the Flavors of Oregon and Washington Review

A Blue Ribbon for Debra Daniels Zeller! In her new book, "The Northwest Vegetarian Cook Book", Debra helps us realize the importance of food connections. Her profiles of Northwest farmers bring us to the countryside where our fruits, grains, nuts and vegetables are grown. We learn about the challenges and rewards associated with operating a farm, dealing with weather, planting and harvesting.
My favorite part of the Northwest Vegetarian Cook Book is the recipes. With wholesome ingredients, each recipe offers something special. Local ingredients take center stage. This cookbook gives me everything I need to cook delicious, nutritious vegetarian meals.
Today I made Easy Spanish Quinoa (page 170). Easy is an understatement. This recipe comes together with no fuss and no muss. Tomatoes, corn, hazelnuts and garlic add robust flavor to the healthy nutrient-rich quinoa. I am looking forward to trying the other 199 recipes in this cookbook. Anyone who enjoys cooking wholesome meals and using local ingredients will want this book in their kitchen.

The Candle Cafe Cookbook: More Than 150 Enlightened Recipes from New York's Renowned Vegan Restaurant Review

I have a total of 11 vegan cookbooks, and the candle cafe cookbook is the one I always use. I have been so disappointed in other vegan cookbooks because they either have hard-to-find ingredients, are too time-consuming to make, and are bland and boring. This cookbook is none of that! Almost every ingredient can be found at your local supermarket so it's not too expensive to purchase these items. Secondly, being a mom to a toddler gives me very little time to spend in the kitchen, and this book offers delicious meals that are easy and quick to prepare. And most of all, everything I have made from this book has been just like eating a gourmet meal! This is a MUST HAVE for everyone who is vegan or is even thinking about trying a vegan meal. I made the lemon tofu cheesecake with blood-orange glaze, and gave some to my carnivorous husband. He is the type of person who won't touch tofu with a ten-foot pole. And he ate every bite of it and thought it was great. I also made the chocolate cake with chocolate ganache frosting, and everyone LOVED it! Also, recently I prepared the seitan piccata with white wine and caper sauce. I only had the "chicken-style" seitan and used that instead. I have to tell you that it tasted like fried chicken in a wonderful brown gravy sauce! It was excellent! This cookbook is one of those "everyday" cookbooks, but with gourmet flavor. I am not a woman who likes to cook much, and I do not have much experience in the kitchen, but being vegan I have to cook my own meals once in a while, and I have been using this book every day, and every day I have a new favorite dish! I have been writing disappointing reviews on every cookbook I've tried, but this one I would give 10 stars if I could. If you are even thinking of buying this book, please do. You will not be disappointed!

Low-Fat Cooking to Beat the Clock Review

This book contains many very clever, tasty, healthy entrees that can be prepared quickly, but realistically not in 15 minutes. These are not "meat & potatoes" recipes -- they presume a well-stocked and diverse pantry. Everything that I have made so far has worked and been delicious. The author employs a "mis en place" cooking style and his clock doesn't start running until all the prep work is done. I suppose if there were a prep chef in my house, I could do the cooking in 15 minutes too. On the other hand, all the recipes can be completed in 30 minutes or less and that's fine by me. One really annoying "technical" nit -- many of the recipes have the ingredients list on one page and the instructions on the following page -- meaning that I am constantly flipping back & forth to follow the recipe. Really annoying for a "quick" cookbook. I would consider this the fault of the publisher not the author. If it weren't for this serious flaw, I would give this book 5 stars.

You Won't Believe It's Gluten-Free: 500 Delicious, Foolproof Recipes for Healthy Living Review

Before Celiac, I was an avid baker. I baked all of our breads (my children never knew what store brought bread was), and that is one of the hardest things that I've had to deal with. The smell of fresh baked bread, the way it feels when you're making it, etc. With this book I have been able to get back some of that nostalgic feeling of being in the kitchen and creating something truly wonderful. I use this cookbook almost daily and share it with anyone I can. I have tried many many other cookbooks and got so discouraged that I didn't want to try anything new. The smell of garbanzo bean flour was enough to make me stop using it. Not to mention the lead weight that came out of the oven every time I tried to bake with 4 or even 5 different flours. Thank you Roben for simplifying baking but while still providing my family with delicious treats from our kitchen. This book is truly a treat for anyone with gluten intolerance, celiac, or various other food allergies. Yeah for being back in the kitchen!!! Heather Jones

Vegan with a Vengeance : Over 150 Delicious, Cheap, Animal-Free Recipes That Rock Review

I am a relatively new vegan, and I dove in head first and purchased a TON of vegetarian/vegan cookbooks so that I would not get bored and frustrated with my new lifestyle. Of all of the cookbooks I own, I have been disappointed with many, impressed by some and awed by only one - Vegan with a Vengeance. The recipes are creative, flavorful, and are enjoyed by my meat-eating friends/family as much as by me! Plus, the book covers a lot of ground - from breakfasts/brunches to desserts, soups, sammiches, etc. I love the additional commentary and advice in the book, regardless of the fact that the other and I don't have the same views on many issues! I keep going back to this cookbook frequently and my many others are starting to collect dust. An absolute must have for any vegetarian or vegan library, and highly recommended for anyone else who wants to eat a little healthier and more varied as well.

Gluten-Free in Five Minutes: 123 Rapid Recipes for Breads, Rolls, Cakes, Muffins, and More Review

I LOVE this book. I can't believe that I can bake and EAT what I baked and all in less than a few minutes. I've made English muffins for breakfast before going to work because these recipes are so easy and quick. What a treat! I'm buying this book for a friend that needs to eat gluten free and for someone who lives alone. These recipes often make one or two servings so are just right for empty nesters, etc. Plus the smaller portions mean you don't have a big old pan of brownies hanging around, great for smaller households like mine.
I made the Extreme Chocolate cake. Wow! Very rich, moist and oh so chocolatey. Don't use Dutch processed cocoa with this recipe. It's a flour-less chocolate cake so the cocoa is the flour. For it to set up properly you need natural cocoa's acidity which Dutch processed cocoa doesn't have, (thanks Shirley O. Corriher, food scientist extraordinaire!).
This book is worth getting and using. It's so simple how could you not?
