Eat Tweet: 1,020 Recipe Gems from the Twitter Community's @cookbook Review

I got a copy of this book as a gift. It's great, i like twitter, and thinking about how to be concise.
The author has taken recipes, lots of them, over 1000, and wrote them in the shortest form possible. I thought it'd be hard to decode, figure out how to translate the short hand in to food on the table. There's a guide, but i didn't need it.
There's a game you can do with it, pick a recipe you have no idea what it'll look like, follow the discussions, and cook it. Then compare the food as you eat it with the wikipedia page about the dish.
Eat Tweet's a great gift for the tech savvy chef.

The Biggest Loser Flavors of the World Cookbook: Take your taste buds on a global tour with more than 75 easy, healthy recipes for your favorite ethnic dishes Review

Chef Devin Alexander has always been one of my favorite healthy cookbook authors. Her recipes are fairly easy, straightforward, and tasty. She has penned each of the Biggest Loser cookbooks (the original, Family Style, and Desserts) and - now - Flavors of the World.
I have used each of the Biggest Loser cookbooks regularly in my kitchen...and this new edition is no exception!Recipes such as Chicken & Sausage Gumbo, Indian Chicken Curry, Shrimp Toasts, and White Pizza just beg to be prepared. As usual, Devin has devised some innovative and unique healthy recipes (such as hollowing out a cucumber and filling it with tuna...to make a rice-less sushi roll).
The book is broken up into seven varieties of cuisine: Italian, Asian/Southeast, Mexican, Regional American, Mediterranean, European, and Desserts. None of the recipes require ingredients too hard to find (however, Devin has all sorts of "salt free" seasoning that I can never find in my supermarket? I guess you can look online).
Any downsides to the book? A few of the recipes seem like repeats from the other Biggest Loser cookbooks. There is yet another Spaghetti and Meatballs recipe, as well as recipes like Chicken-Fried Steak that have appeared in some of Devin's other publications. I also found the dessert section lacking in creativity and scope...we have a "Thai Fruit Salad" that has numerous chopped fruits sprinkled with lime zest and juice. How is that Thai?
These, however, are minor complaints. Flavors of the World is a solid, tasty, and worthy sequel to the popular Biggest Loser cookbooks. I expect nothing less from the series and from Devin. Enjoy!

Taste of Home Comfort Food Diet Cookbook: New Family Classic s Collection: Lose Weight with 416 More Great Recipes Review

I'M A MAN. I LOVE THE FOOD. My wife loves the healthy recipes. I'm a 2 heart attack survivor and wish to stay that way, but I enjoy what most men enjoy. This cookbook allows the delights of eating without the danger. She likes the nutrition info on each recipe. She easily finds low salt & fat recipes that I crave. Like "Shepherds Pie", a super salsa, which I beg to be served with "cheese straws", & a thick macho "loaded Mexican pizza." I can't believe it's healthy eating.
She tries to tell me how healthy all of our eating has become, and I appreciate her efforts, and this book. But let's face it, diet books are a dime a dozen. This is more. It's a GREAT FOODS BOOK. First comes a tasty recipe, then they've made it nutritional and heartily healthy. Diabetic needs are addressed too. I've told my wife, "Use this book for a year. Toss out the others. These are man-awesome and healthy. A winner on my plate."
I enjoy sitting with my wife and using the color photos to pick out a different recipe. I've suggested we try next the dessert "caramel apple pizza" because it looks like a treat you'd buy at the State Fair.
She was delighted that the book came with a FREE cooking magazine. And she loves the free access to online weight-loss tools. The front of this book offers tips on weight loss techniques that are man-woman-family friendly. Tips aligned with what my cardiologist suggests. The index is excellent for home-grown food. Example: if you have abundance on squash, go to the squash index and see the list of recipes, including portion calories. Or there is the traditional recipe name index as well.
It's not often that a MAN falls in love with a cookbook. Here is a winner. Buy it, gals, and delight your man, even if he doesn't want to know he's eating healthy.
Of course if you don't like your hubby, or you enjoy him as Portly Pig, buy another cookbook.
My babe (we're in our 60s) wants me around a bit longer, God bless her.

Money Saving Meals and Round 2 Recipes Review

Love this new cookbook! I have other of Sandra Lee's previous books, and I often watch her show. I have long been a fan. I have used many of her recipes and find them generally simple to make, budget-conscious, and delicious.
After I received Money Saving Meals & Round2 Recipes a few days ago, I spent a couple of hours pouring over the recipes and photographs. I marked many of the 149 that I wish to try right away, like: Zucchini Cakes; Asparagus and Tomato Tart (using a frozen store bought pie shell); Blueberry Scones with Lemon Glaze. My husband and I like veggies, so the Asparagus dish is one that will make a nice meal for two people, with leftovers.
As a reviewer and cookbook collector, I try to look at the cookbook from a buyer's perspective. What would I find if I opened it physically in the bookstore or library. What type of recipes would I find; who is the cookbook directed toward; are there nice photos; are there charts, etc.; what are some unique aspects of the cookbook. As an experienced cook and having won my share of awards, I feel that I am able to judge whether the book is worth buying and I try to impart this to the reader.
In my opinion, this is a very nice cookbook with lots of color photos, and which offers tips on how to be a smart shopper and coupon user. The recipes also appear to be simple to recreate, as most of Sandra Lee's have been in the past. If you are looking for a cookbook that offers quick, but unique and tasty meals, this is one that I recommend.
(Thank you to Hyperion for my review copy.)

The Convenience Cook: 125 Best Recipes for Easy Homemade Meals Using Time-Saving Foods from Boxes, Bottles, Cans and More Review

I've had this book for over a year now and many of the recipes have become "trusty standards" that I turn to again and again. An easy and wonderful spinach risotto that my three year old loves, for example, is something that I can make from this book with straightforward pantry ingredients. Most of the recipes are very easy and fairly quick to prepare.
Although this book does use lots of "convenience" food, it is not unhealthy. Frozen vegetables are convenient and healthy, and lots of canned food (such as kidney beans) are healthy too, especially if rinsed to get rid of excess salt. I also find that lots of recipes are very good the first time I make them and then I add a little of this and little of that the next time I make them, and can easily turn them into something that my family LOVES. (Eg. add some tarragon to the spinach risotto, if you have some handy.)
I always have some recipes from this book in my meal plan for the week, so that I don't have to buy fresh ingredients for everything I make each week. (That way I avoid having vegetables etc go bad in the fridge. I use fresh fish, vegetables etc at the beginning of the week, soon after grocery shopping, and then frozen or canned later in the week.) Even if you don't like to cook and/or are a novice cook, there will be plenty of recipes in here that you will find indispensible. Every busy household needs this cook book.
Having said all that, the dessert section is not great. Too many cake mixes used, and the results are not even that good. But you can't get much more convenient than some fresh or canned fruit and a scoop of ice cream, so I don't care much about the dessert chapter not being wonderful. But if you're looking for quick and easy desserts, don't bother with this book.

The French Slow Cooker Review

Michele Scicolone has written her 2nd slow cooker book which, as she explains in her introduction makes French cooking less intimidating. This book is not presented as easy recipes; but actually this does make French cooking easier. French cooking has a reputation for being difficult with slow simmering. The slow cooker solves this `problem', which makes it much more trouble-free. Instead of spending hours with dishes simmering over a stove they are prepared in a slow cooker. There is some preparation needed for some dishes, such as browning meat or onions, but for the majority of the dishes, with the exception of soups, the cooking and preparation is in the slow cooker.
The ingredients are common ones from the supermarket. There are tips and techniques for cooking and equipment use. A description of what should be in the French pantry is included. Recipes in the book are; soups, chicken, turkey and duck, meats, seafood, soufflés, quiches and egg dishes, vegetables, legumes and grains, desserts and basics.
Most of the soups do require being put through a sieve, a blender or a food mill. We did not have much luck with cutting the quiche we tried into wedges - getting it out of the slow cooker was a bit awkward and did not make for good looking wedges, and the taste of crustless quiches does not quite suit our family's taste. There are also suggestions to cook potatoes for a potato salad. This takes 3 hours in the slow cooker, when in most instances cooking them on the stove top or in an oven seems much more practical.
When I received this book, we had a large number of guests in our house and it was quickly put to use. We were very successful with, and everyone enjoyed the spinach and egg bouillabaisse and the Bargemen's beef stew.
This book does give good ideas for preparing dishes with a French flavor and has some ideas such as making a rolled aluminum stand for a rack to make some of the dishes. There are some good concepts in here and it would be perfect for those who wish to make some improved slow cooker recipes.

Cooking With All Things Trader Joe's Cookbook Review

Overall, this is an excellent cookbook. I've had this cookbook for about one month, and so far I love it.
First off, let me say that this book is targeted to cooks who enjoy creating "gourmet" type meals. This book isn't for you if you're looking for dishes that might show up in a cafeteria. Even though there are recipes for common things like sandwiches and casseroles, they have their own gourmet twist. So for those people who like to serve creative dishes, this cookbook is made for them.
The theory behind the book is that Trader Joe's sells many unique sauces, pre-chopped veggies, and other "half-prepped" ingredients that would normally take a cook a significant amount of time to prepare on their own. So combining the "half-prepped" ingredients of Trader Joe's and the recipes in the cookbook, you can whip up gourmet meals in a fraction of the time it would take you otherwise.
All the recipes have a large color picture, a list of ingredients (sometimes with substitutes), clear instructions, and the estimated prep time (usually in the 20-30min range). I've tried a few of the quick recipes and they have been pretty straightforward so far. The cookbook includes appetizers, entres, desserts, and a "bachelor quickies" section at the end which is basically heating pre-cooked/frozen stuff from Trader Joe's and combining them into interesting meals.
Most of the dishes are very original and look/sound delicious. There were a few recipes that I had question marks about, but I guess I'll find out how good they are once I try them.
So overall, if you like the idea of cooking original "gourmet-like" meals in a fraction of the time, and you have access to a Trader Joe's, this book is very highly recommended. Happy cooking!

Gluten-Free Cooking Made Easy: Delicious Recipes for Everyone Review

This book provides excellent recipes and help for the family that has learned that celiac disease or gluten intolerance is to become a part of their life. It is designed for families with special consideration for childrens' tastes. It is not a gourmet recipe book that requires a number of special ingredients. The family that begins a gluten free diet will usually have to purchase special flours and xanthan gum, etc. They need recipes that require good basic ingredients that will not require a special purchase. There is an excellent variety of recipes that are sure to please each member of the family .....including those who are not gluten intolerant.

365 Foods Kids Love to Eat : Nutritious and Kid-Tested Review

The authors suggest banning the use of the words "Yuk" and "Do I Have to Eat This?" I couldn't agree more, and I would start by banning recipes like Salmon Asparagus Roulade, Shrimp and Fish Mornay, Tuna Souffles, and Asparagus Crepes from a kids cookbook. My kids, at least, DON'T love to eat this way. Not exactly what I was hoping to find.

The Sober Kitchen: Recipes and Advice for a Lifetime of Sobriety (Non) Review

Liz Scott has done a tremendous service to those recovering from substance abuse and others who choose to cook without alcohol
Cookbooks and magazines typically give scant attention, if any, to the needs of those who forgo alcohol in cooking. Stock or water is often recommended as a substitute, despite lacking whatever flavor the wine, beer, or sherry called for in the recipe would contribute, and the results are what you'd expect: flat, dull, or off-putting.
Scott's approach to substitution is more nuanced. By considering the flavors the alcohol would contribute and the role it plays in the dish, she arrives at substitutes that truly work. Where wine plays a supporting role, as in a pan sauce, for instance, she recreates its fruitiness and acidity with a mixture of unsweetened grape juice and wine vinegar. Where the alcohol stars, she reworks the recipe entirely, like the boeuf bourguignon where she uses currant jelly to give depth of flavor and body to the sauce.
I bought the book for the discussion of substitution after I heard Scott interviewed on the radio, but I've found that it offers much more. She provides extensive information on nutrition and practical suggestions on eating better, both in early recovery and over the long haul, by eating more fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes, and, without faddishness, by starting to pay attention to food's glycemic index. I was inspired to try roasted soybeans for the first time in a "road to recovery" trail mix with chocolate chips that I liked very much.
The other recipes I've tried--iced herbal tea, granola; a leek and potato soup; pan-fried steak; a roasted pork tenderloin with cumin and apples that took only ten minutes of prep--have been uniformly good: clearly written, easy to prepare, and great-tasting.
The book is structured according to stages of early, established, and long-term recovery, and it allows Scott to be supportive and even gentle-having that ice cream probably won't kill you-while aspiring to continuous improvement. For those in AA, her recommendations about triggers, cravings, HALT, fellowship, and other concepts are mainstream program. Although stricter than some might feel necessary-she tossed out her corkscrew and won't use alcohol-based vanilla extract-her suggestions will help keep you safe.
I recommend the book highly for anyone in recovery who likes to cook, or for that matter, is just interested in taking better care of oneself.

The Everything Healthy Cooking for Parties: Delicious, guilt-free foods all your guests will love (Everything Series) Review

I'm not on a low-fat diet or watching my weight, but for medical reasons I have to avoid sugar. I bought this book out of curiosity, because many low-fat recipes are high in sugar instead. However, this book is full of recipes with very little sugar in them either. As an example, in the entire chapter on lunch recipes there were occasional ingredients such as raspberry yoghurt, mayonnaise and peanut butter, which may or may not have sugar in them, two recipes with a spoonful or two of honey in them, and only one with a spoonful of sugar in it. So long as you avoid the couple of chapters on cakes, desserts, cookies and other sweets, the other 13 chapters are full of what look like excellent recipes for sugar-free people. My only criticism is that the nutrition panels for each recipe don't mention the sugars level.
I'm off to the kitchen to try some out :-)

Robin Takes 5: 500 Recipes, 5 Ingredients or Less, 500 Calories or Less, for 5 Nights/Week at 5:00 PM Review

500 recipes with 5 ingredients or less and 500 calories or less.... where do I sign up?!? You might think "how can you get a delicious meal when it has so few ingredients?" Well let me tell you... out of the recipes that I have made, I LOVED them! I have made the Pepper Jack Chicken w/ Chipotle Potato Chips (357 calories), Seared Steaks w/ Chipotle Butter (373 calories), Balsamic Glazed Burgers w/ Sauteed Onions & Peppers (428 calories) and my personal favorite Red Potato Salad w/Honey-Basil Vinaigrette (237 calories).
Robin Miller has done a fantastic job with this book. Very rarely do I love every recipe that I try from one cookbook. The directions are easy to follow and the ingredients are so simple that they are available at all grocery stores. It is perfect for weeknight meals in that the recipes are all around 30 minutes to an hour to make from start to finish. Honestly, what more would you want in a cookbook?

The New Atkins for a New You Cookbook: 200 Simple and Delicious Low-Carb Recipes in 30 Minutes or Less (Touchstone Book) Review

This is the necessarily authoritative cookbook to go along with The New Atkins for a New You: The Ultimate Diet for Shedding Weight and Feeling Great. If you don't have that book, don't worry; pages 1-6 will briefly tell you the basics to get started. Then visit the website, if you haven't already done so.
So, your shopping list. You'll need lots of heavy cream and butter. There are several recipes in which their use is generous. That theme of old, though, does not run nearly as rampant in this book as I had expected. The fatfest of yesteryear has been scaled back. Olive oil is the preferred flavor carrier, with butter and/or cream as accents on occasion with it. A little bit of cream cheese, a little bit of sour cream, again, as accents. Various hard cheeses appear as accent notes, too, mostly. Some nuts. Less than a cup, usually. The only sweetener used in this book is "granular sugar substitute." Buy your eggs in the eighteen-count carton. Steak, poultry, seafood, lamb-but you knew that. Vegetarian dishes use tofu, soymilk, TVP, tempeh, seitan, and beans.
For optimal use of this book, it is mandatory-not optional-to make friends with your farmers' markets and produce department at the grocery store. Lots and lots of fresh vegetables and herbs appear throughout the book. At a bare minimum, keep lemons and garlic handy. Basic chopping-no fancy de-boning a whole chicken or such. Remember that fish sauce you bought that's lurking in your refrigerator door? You'll need to excavate it. Get some almond flour. Not a lot-the small bag will do. Also, there's an online company (Dixie Diners Club) that sells a thickener for gravies and soups (yes, they're still around).
DO KNOW THIS: the breakfast and dessert sections rely WAY HEAVILY MUCH upon the use of Atkins Cuisine All Purpose Bake Mix. Although there are recipes that DON'T call for it in those sections, they are precious few-especially in desserts. A handful of the entrees use it, too. A strong push for the bake mix, indeed. If I bought a bag of that stuff, I'd sure want to know how to use it! I'm aware that it is entirely appropriate. There is one recipe calling for their penne pasta-it's a mac-n-cheese sort of dish. Atkins Cuisine Bread appears in a sneak or two, as well. For this, I knocked off a star anyway. I don't want to use such products, and I don't want to invent substitutions (none are available in a local store). Aside from that, the lush, fresh, and pretty dang easy-to-prepare recipes in the middle make those three stars burn brightly! There is no lack of flavor or actual nourishment from the entrees, vegetable dishes, sides, and soups. There are no recipes calling for their ready-to-eat products, BTW.
There are thoughtful features, such as a tag at the edge of the page indicating whether the recipe is a weekday (quick) recipe or a weekend (takes a little longer) recipe. None go over an hour twenty in cooking time. When a recipe takes longer, it's passive preparation: for example, waiting for ice cream to harden. As you can see in the "Look Inside" feature here at Amazon, there's a great chart in the back which informs you as to which phases you can use a recipe. Each recipe heading states appropriate phases, anyway. "Looking Inside" will also treat you to a good sampling of the author's conversational style of communication. I like the Tip Time boxes that appear throughout. The information is really great. I didn't know there were four types of salmon! Only thirty-odd recipes have full-color glossy photos, and they are located in the center of the book.
Although there are numerous recipes appropriate for induction, consider waiting until you're past that challenging stage in using this book. For "official" induction recipes, I recommend their website. Inductees going through this book might be too tempted by the recipes for later phases. Amongst them you'll find lentils, soba noodles, sweet potatoes, wild rice, garbanzos, barley, butternut squash, corn, carrots, beans, a touch of whole wheat flour, and one lonely little dish with POTATOES! I'm so profoundly starchophobic that I knocked off a second star. I freely admit that's from my quirk and not reflective on how enticing the recipes are. I personally was looking for more hand-holding for induction and phase 2. By the time you're in later phases and into the starch as presented in this book, you don't need this book as a template anymore-follow me? By the way, my copy has printer ink streaks on pages 188 and 189. I can still read those pages clearly.
I'd go so far as to say that eating "low-carb" and following Atkins really aren't the same thing anymore. I do want to say that I've enjoyed cooking from it thus far. Cleanup has been tolerable after preparing what I've made up to this point.
If you have good habits surrounding use of fresh vegetables and herbs, you'll enjoy this book. You DO have basic knife skills, don't you? More importantly, you'll enjoy this plan. If you don't have such good habits, this book might quickly become another museum piece on your bookshelf. This, AND/OR if you're okay with using Atkins Cuisine Bake Mix A LOT (or perhaps a facsimile), then you really could use this book. If not, you can still enjoy lots of great eating, but know up front that you lose about a third of it. Thanks for visiting:)

Cooking for Babies and Toddlers Review

This book is really helpful for parents looking for nutritious and interesting meals for their children. It has great variety and includes whole family meals that allow you to cook for baby, toddler, and adults all at once. The author deals with baby foods, toddler foods, and foods for families in the three sections. She also includes advice on what is age appropriate and ways to get vegetables into the picky toddlers diet. The book includes photos of most recipes and neat presentation ideas. My daughter eats a large variety of foods thanks to this book.
