1,001 Best Slow-Cooker Recipes: The Only Slow-Cooker Cookbook You'll Ever Need Review

This is the second book I have bought in the '1001 Recipes' series, and I haven't been disappointed with either one! The recipes in this slow cooker book are delicious, and they are broken down into well-organized chapters. I especially like that there are two chapters for vegetarian recipes...there is something for everyone! Though not explicitly advertised as a low-fat book, this book has recipes that have an aim to be healthy and lower in fat and calories. Every recipe has nutritional information, which is very helpful. I think that the only thing I would change about the book would be to add a breakfast chapter. Other than that, great book!

Slow Cooker Quick Fixes: Recipes for Everyday Cover 'n Cook Convenience Review

I love the idea of a slow cooker, but am constantly frustrated with recipes that call for cream of chicken soup and leave my family eating mushy, under-flavored meals.
Slow Cooker Quick Fixes uses fresh ingredients, and offers complete menu offerings that take less than five more minutes to put together. I've made six recipes out of this book so far, and have planned next week's menu just from this book and Quick Fixes with Mixes, another joy-to-cook-from collection from Southern Living.
This would make an excellent gift for someone who is just getting started on their own, or someone who has had a slow cooker tucked away for years in the back of a cupboard...because they never found the right collection of recipes!

The Convenience Cook: 125 Best Recipes for Easy Homemade Meals Using Time-Saving Foods from Boxes, Bottles, Cans and More Review

I've had this book for over a year now and many of the recipes have become "trusty standards" that I turn to again and again. An easy and wonderful spinach risotto that my three year old loves, for example, is something that I can make from this book with straightforward pantry ingredients. Most of the recipes are very easy and fairly quick to prepare.
Although this book does use lots of "convenience" food, it is not unhealthy. Frozen vegetables are convenient and healthy, and lots of canned food (such as kidney beans) are healthy too, especially if rinsed to get rid of excess salt. I also find that lots of recipes are very good the first time I make them and then I add a little of this and little of that the next time I make them, and can easily turn them into something that my family LOVES. (Eg. add some tarragon to the spinach risotto, if you have some handy.)
I always have some recipes from this book in my meal plan for the week, so that I don't have to buy fresh ingredients for everything I make each week. (That way I avoid having vegetables etc go bad in the fridge. I use fresh fish, vegetables etc at the beginning of the week, soon after grocery shopping, and then frozen or canned later in the week.) Even if you don't like to cook and/or are a novice cook, there will be plenty of recipes in here that you will find indispensible. Every busy household needs this cook book.
Having said all that, the dessert section is not great. Too many cake mixes used, and the results are not even that good. But you can't get much more convenient than some fresh or canned fruit and a scoop of ice cream, so I don't care much about the dessert chapter not being wonderful. But if you're looking for quick and easy desserts, don't bother with this book.

Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home: Fast and Easy Recipes for Any Day Review

One of the best of the vegetarian cookbooks, this has delicious recipes (e.g., "Pasta with Greens and Ricotta"), and clear directions for relatively easy vegetarian fare. There's an emphasis on the "fast and easy," and each recipe has an estimated preparation time, often under half an hour. Sometimes these estimates imply a cook with Olympian speed and efficiency, but with experience, preparation time is reduced. For example, "Field Peas with Kale and Sweet Potatoes" requires boiling potatoes, and sauteing onions, kale, and peas. Total time is a reasonable 25 minutes. A nutritional analysis follows each recipe. Field Peas above has 142 calories, 6.9 G protein, 2.3G fat, 24.5 Carbohydrates, 19mg sodium, and 0 mg cholesterol.
There's no particular low-fat emphasis here: Boiled Polenta with Mushrooms and Cheese" has 15.6 g of fat per 8 oz. Serving, Moosewood Fudge Brownie have 9.3 grams per two-inch brownie, but there are several recipes with under 3 grams of fat per serving.
It's a very comprehensive book, with recipes for soups, quick breads, salads, sauces, main dish salads, grains, beans, pastas, fish, desserts, stews, stir-fries, pizza, and more. The book includes a guide to ingredients, and chapters on techniques, herbs, menu planning, and a list of recipes for kids, parties, vegans, and buffets. Finally, there is a chapter called "Quantities," so that you'll know with utter serenity that it takes 2 ½ cups of florets to get one pound of cauliflower.
For an emphasis on low-fat vegetarian cooking, take a look at the Moosewood Low-Fat Cookbook. Otherwise, this is an excellent cookbook for beginner or expert, and ranks with "Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone" as one of the best vegetarian cookbooks available.

The Ultimate Slow Cooker Cookbook: Flavorful One-Pot Recipes for Your Crockery Pot Review

I have tried two recipes from this book and liked the results of neither. The Asian Stir-Fry Stew was no substitute for a stir fried dish and a waste of good scallops. The Hearty Corn Chowder with Peas looked nothing like the accompanying photo and tasted so bad, that it went from the crock pot directly to the garbage disposal. The book has many beautiful illustrations but I am reluctant to waste good ingredients (and money) on a book that is long on promise, touting itself as the 'ultimate', but short on results. For people wanting to create a delicious meal with a short preparation time, 'Crock-It' is a better choice. For those of you who have the time to create more gourmet meals with your slow cooker, 'The Slow Cooker Ready and Waiting Cookbook'is an excellent resource.

Moosewood Restaurant New Classics Review

Is this a "new classic" and what's in this book for the average cook who wants to cook vegetarian food? This heavy tome is packed with useful recipes and is all over the map, both ethnically and in types of recipes. As other Moosewood cookbooks, this is a vegetarian cookbook, but with asides into fish, which I don't mind--being one who limits meat but has not problem eating it. Some people do view fish as living creatures, which, of course, they certainly are.
What's also new here compared to the dairy-laden earlier books is a venture into a few vegan recipes that leave out all milk, egg and other animal-source product, including a recipe for very useful mock sour cream. So there's a little something for everyone, vegetarian, limited vegetarian and even vegan. The recipes tend to the family-style rather than super-gourmet.
One of the most useful recipes for me is a vegetable broth. This is a very good recipe base all kinds of soups. I despise the taste of canned broths and it's a nuisance to make chicken stock from scratch. Vegetable stock freezes well and this recipe makes a particularly flavorful version, using carrots, onions, celery, potatoes and garlic. The potatoes, in particular add consistency to the broth. The recipe offers either sweet potato or carrot for that sweet-spicy element and the sweet potato version also adds body to the broth. There is a version for mock-chicken broth, and an Asian ginger flavored broth base as well.
Italian dishes dominate the recipes, lots of pasta sauces, including a vegetarian kind of Bolognese (meat gravy), a good basic tomato sauce, frittatas, risottos and cioppino fish stew. There are also plenty of diversions into novelties such as an interesting peach salsa.
The breads lean more to biscuits and cornbread than to yeast breads and the dessert section is loaded with cookies. There are also sections on sandwiches, wraps and mock burgers.
In summary, this is a very good vegetarian-based home cooking book, maybe something like Joy of Cooking - Veggie-Style. In that respect, this is a new classic, and certainly found a welcome home on my cooking bookshelf.

The $7 a Meal Slow Cooker Cookbook: 301 Delicious, Nutritious Recipes the Whole Family Will Love Review

This cookbook comes at the nick of time. With the current state of the economy, saving money on food is more important than ever. Is anyone else out there shocked every time they go to the grocery store?? Some of my family's favorites:
- Spicy Peanut Chicken (you can omit the jalapenos for the kiddies)
- Chicken Marsala -- yum!
- Fork Tender Pot Roast
- Texas BBQ Beef Sandwiches
- Broccoli Cheese Soup
Those of you who use slow cookers know how wonderful it feels to get dinner prepared in the morning, go about your day, and come home to that heavenly smell knowing that your work is 99% done! I highly, highly recommend this cookbook for anyone who wants to get organized, save money and eat well!

Everyday Low Carb Cooking: 240 Great-Tasting Low Carbohydrate Recipes the Whole Family will Enjoy Review

I've purchased 5 or 6 low carb cookbooks, and this is my favorite. One of the things I like best is that the recipes are not overly heavy. I'm kind of tired of recipes that start like (1 chicken breast, 1 cup mayonnaise, 1 cup cheese - 1 serving), mostly because I don't enjoy the feeling after eating like that. Most of the recipes in this book are for meals that my non-lowcarbing family enjoy. There are some especially good soup recipes (which is my typical lunch since buying this book), and I had received several comments on the coleslaw I served at a recent party. Some of the carb counts can get a little high (10+ per serving), but the carbs are usually spent on healthy vegetables like tomatoes, cabbage, or onions. If you have 30 or more carbs a day to use, you shouldn't have too many problems with these recipes. A lot of the recipes have a complex taste, but are pretty easy to make. There are no dessert recipes, and no breakfast recipes. Some of the recipes can get pretty spicy if you use the recommended measurements, which I love, but you might want to halve any of the spicy ingredients the first go around. The author does detail the carb counts by ingredient, which is a great idea, but doesn't include any fiber, protein, or fat counts. I know people following the Protein Power plan would appreciate fiber and protein counts. All in all, well worth it.

The New Moosewood Cookbook (Mollie Katzen's Classic Cooking) Review

Absolutely fabulous recipies that are extremely simple to prepare. The names of the vegetarian dishes are inventive and somehow make the recipes really come to life.
If you're like me, you like eating healthy and great-tasting food, but dread food preparation time and following hundreds of directions and end up missing a crucial step that ruins the dish. Some people are born with a gift for whipping up recipes from their own imaginations, but I'm not one of those people.
The only reason this book doesn't get 5 stars from me is that it should have been spiral bound. It's almost impossible to keep the book open on a kitchen counter unless you put heavy objects (very heavy) on both pages or you go an buy one of those gizmos that hold books open.
Nonetheless, this is my favorite recipe book. My kitchen is full of them, but this is the only one that almost never has any dust on it like the other ones. :-)

Love Soup: 160 All-New Vegetarian Recipes from the Author of The Vegetarian Epicure Review

I have lots of cookbooks sitting on the shelf gathering dust - but not this one. I've already used it 3 times in as many weeks, and as the weather gets colder I anticipate trying more recipes.
There's a whole chapter on "green soups" that use those dark leafy greens the nutritionists are always urging us to eat (unsuccessfully in my case). In my first attempt vast quantities of kale and spinach almost overflowed the soup pot, but after being cooked down and pureed with seasonings the greens were transformed into a delicious soup that was creamy without the need for butter or cream. It was so good I made it two weeks in a row.
Next I made the zucchini basil soup which uses a full 2 cups of basil to 2 pounds of zucchini - easy and delicious.

Beyond the Moon Cookbook: More Vegetarian Recipes From the Author of Horn of the Moon Cookbook Review

Having been vegetarian for several years, I am always looking for new books to add to my collection. All the recipes that I've tried in this book have been pretty good, but by far the best feature in my mind is the muffin recipes. They are all honey sweetened, which is great for those who can't/don't do sugar. But this is the only cookbook I have where the muffins turn out like those huge ones you find in the store. Every single muffin recipe I've tried has come out of the oven overflowing the muffin cups and tasting great. This is definitely worth the money if you are a muffin lover!

Lorna Sass' Short-Cut Vegetarian: Great Taste in No Time Review

Every cookbook I own has a focus. Some are ethnic cookbooks. Some are gourmet cookbooks. Some are comprehensive references.
This cookbook's focus is speed. Every recipe lists the "prep time" and "cook time", and for almost all recipes those times are each between 5 and 15 minutes.
Each recipe consists of a short list of ingredients, and the preparation directions are clear and super-concise. Occasionally, one ingredient in a recipe will be a product of another recipe, which is usually a pet peeve of mine in cookbooks, but such ingredients are rare and always have store-bought equivalents if you don't want to prepare them yourself.
Many of the recipes can also be converted from leftovers into a different form -- the quinoa / potato / corn / pepper pilaf easily becomes a stew with a couple cups of water and some veggie stock powder. This is especially handy if you primarily cook just for yourself (as I do.)
I only have two complaints about the book, and they're not major. The first is the lack of all photography, although it sure makes the cookbook unbelievably inexpensive, so it's a fair trade.
My second (minor) complaint is that either I'm a slow cook, or her prep times assume that the ingredients are already as specified -- a recipe will call for chopped carrots, diced pepper, diced tofu, etc. and I think the prep time assumes you already have it all diced and chopped. Either that, or it's simply that I'm chopping everything by hand rather than with a food processor. Either way, the recipes generally seem to take me roughly 150% to 200% of the time she allots. Since I'm not a professional chef (to say the least) I can totally accept that this is just me being slow.
If you're like me, you browse Amazon and add most things to your wish list, only buying fairly sparsely of the items that are really compelling. If so, buy this book. It's inexpensive, and it's fantastic. In just the past week I've owned it, it has dramatically changed the quality and diversity of what I eat at home.

Moosewood Restaurant Daily Special: More Than 275 Recipes for Soups, Stews, Salads and Extras Review

Like to cook? I mean, like discovering new seasonings and playing with interesting ingredients? If so, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!
Don't be dismayed that the recipes are all soups and salads. Those are very broad categories! Many "salads" are more like casual meals (such as Bean Puree with Seven Savories, which is pretty much a really cool Middle Eastern-style nachos, using toasted pita wedges instead of tortilla chips, of course). And as for soups... there are SO MANY different recipes here, no matter what your idea of soup may be when you open this book, it'll have expanded ten-fold after you've perused these pages.
The best part is, soup and salad are such forgiving mediums, this book is perfect for the home chef who wants to explore. Helpful text explains unusual ingredients and describes why certain vegetables & seasonings were chosen to enhance flavor and texture in each recipe. At the bottom of every recipe, the Moosewood editors were kind to include a half dozen or so dishes that would compliment it nicely. Makes meal-planning a snap, and so far, they've been right on target, every time.
I got this book for Christmas and many of the recipes have already become "regulars." I have no qualms about trying new dishes, even when serving guests, because you can trust these recipes to need little, if any, tampering. Though I have several Moosewood cookbooks (and I like them all), I can't recommend THIS book enough. Really!
Oh yeah, and I wanted to also mention that Moosewood also includes time estimates & nutritional informaton for every recipe. gotta love that.

The Moosewood Restaurant Cooking for Health: More Than 200 New Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes for Delicious and Nutrient-Rich Dishes Review

Admittedly, when I see "Healthy" as a description in a cookbook's title, I get a bit skittish. My head thinks healthy is wonderful, but my palate sometimes disagrees. Moosewood Restaurant Cooking for Health has exceeded all expectations and does not sacrifice taste for health. It's has opened up a new world of delicious and yes, quite healthy, food for me and my family.
Cooking for Health has loads of nutritional information at the beginning of the book. It's followed by cooking methods, then the recipes. It's your typical all-around cookbook with chapters on: Breakfast, Eggs, Appetizers, Salads, Soups, Sandwiches, Burgers, Stir-frys & Sautes, Tofu, Savory Pastries, Beans, Pasta, Stews, Veganism, Raw Foods, Grains, Side Veggies and Desserts.
I cook a lot, and own a selection of quality cookbooks. After buying this cookbook and making some of the recipes, I now use this as my Go-To cookbook. I've made the Savory Asparagus and Mushroom Bread Pudding, Pasta with Broccoli and Thai Red Curry. They all came out so delicious, my husband and I loved them. The Asparagus and Mushroom bread pudding was only 222 calories per serving too! It certainly didn't taste like a low calorie dish, and I can't wait to make it again.
My favorite things about the Moosewood Restaurant Cooking for Health are the "extras" given for each recipe. They describe each recipe at the beginning, plus give variations, helpful suggestions, and serving ideas. The serving ideas can be food-related, or enhance the visual presentation.
This is the kind of cookbook you can take to bed and read, or just start cooking with. The ingredient lists are not overly lenghty, nor are the instructions for cooking. Every recipe lists "Hands-on Time" and "Baking Time" so you know how long a recipe takes and can plan accordingly.
Each recipe has a nutritional breakdown consisting of Calories, Protein, Carbohydrate, Dietary Fiber, Total Fat, Saturated Fat, Monounsaturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. Also listed is the total number of servings, plus the volume yield, so you can easily dole out proper portion servings if you're watching your weight.

The cookbook has vegetarian, vegan and raw selections to choose from. They also give variations on some vegetarian recipes to make them vegan. (But if you're vegan, you often know how to adjust recipes your own way too.) The recipes also come with "Serving and Menu ideas" which can be suggestions on food pairings, or adjusting a lighter meal to make it heartier.
The one change I'd like to see with any Moosewood cookbook is photos. I understand that Moosewood likes to keep their style, but I'm one of those people who loves photos of food.

The Skinnygirl Dish: Easy Recipes for Your Naturally Thin Life Review

I have to start by saying I consider myself a pretty fine cook...we are a two chef household with strong culinary backgrounds. It's hard to impress me with new info. I'm also a weight loss coach...balance! Yin Yang!
Yet this book is very different than my other cookbooks. I actually read it cover-to-cover the day I got it. It's not just recipes. If you are totally new at learning how to cook healthy dishes, you will feel as though you've just had a crash course. Better yet, if you attended culinary school I swear there is enough "teach an old dog new tricks" info in here to continue learning...at least there was for us. While I already knew things like using pumpkin or applesauce in place of fat in cakes (it makes a spice cake BETTER and MOISTER and pumpkin is high fiber, high water, low glycemic so it takes as many calories as are in pumpkin to digest it so it's an amazing fat replacement in baked goods), I learned scores of new things...I now stock my cupboard, for example, with oat flour. After using it in her cake recipe I was floored. I have also been trying to create a low calorie and low fat hummus (yet yummy) for ages with no tahini. She beat me to it. I also hate the taste of low fat or no fat sour cream and her greek yogurt and lemon juice trick in the recipes has changed my Southwest dishes for good. The substitutions really do change your mind and the book is just as much about teaching the reader a lifestyle more than handing them some recipes.
That said, I wasn't happy not to find nutritional information in the book. Granted, I get the reasoning behind it since I read Bethenny's first book (if you didn't, you'll also get a good overview of it in here) and her mindset against dieting but, instead, enjoying good healthy food in moderation...however, statistically most of us eat 40% more calories than we think we do. For those of us who don't mind journaling our calories or who actually feel empowered by it, I hope that she adds a link to a website in which she lists them. This way, she takes away the obsession she is against in the caloric "food noise" in the book, but also allows those of us in control of our calories in vs. calories out to go that extra mile to get the info if we are gonna plug it in on the computer anyway...
...and that's exactly what I did this morning. I have been cooking from this book for days and I kid you not, I became convinced that the calorie count was left out because the food was TOO good and she had to be fooling us into thinking it was healthy. If you make the cake called "How Is This So Moist Chocolate Cake with Peanut Butter Glaze" as I did this morning, you'll understand. This is actually 1000% better than my fattest chocolate cake recipe laden with calories. I mean it is mind blowing good. And very filling. So I was positive I had to have eaten about 700 calories this morning until I actually plugged in the full recipe and included the peanut butter glaze (it makes more than enough glaze; you'll even have some leftover) and discovered the cake and pb glaze was just 150 calories/ serving. It is incredibly great without the peanut butter glaze too so I'm guessing that omission would even bring it down to 100 calories for something that tastes uber fattening and isn't! This recipe alone was worth the price of the book. In fact, Bethenny, the author, noted in the notes about this that the first time she made it she accused Jason, (her husband- according-to-the-front-page-news-as-of-yesterday), of throwing a stick of butter in it while she wasn't looking. I have no idea either how these ingredients make something that rich and low calorie but it's my new fave. I began plugging in the dishes I had made into my nutrional info converter and all were high in health and all natural, low in calories, low in fat, many high fiber...she should include the stats. It's a selling point, not a negative.
Try the lychee martini or skinnygirl cosmo (great tips on keeping drinks low cal!)
Try the guilt-free artichoke spinach cheese dip.
Pad Thai
Pasta Carbonara
Lasagna
Chicken Wings
Baked Ziti
Cranberry Almond Chicken Salad
Kettle Corn
Spicy Chipotle Dip
Quacamole
The pasta with the mushroom sauce using truffle oil is good enough to serve at a dinner party. We fell over ourselves eating that one two days straight in my house
Goat Cheese Dip
Spanish Spiced Rubbed Chicken with Mustard Green Onion Sauce
Red Velvet Cupcakes
You get the idea. What's unique is she lists scores of substitutions with each recipe so you really get the idea how to use what you have, transform a dish, make it go further, or how to pick up substituting low fat and low calorie ingredients in all your other dishes in ways you might not think of.
Also, I add non-fat greek yogurt to her excellent hummus recipe and it makes it super creamy and even higher in protein.
Better yet, while most of my diet cookbooks use substitutions that make a dish a tad more artificial, these are all natural and that always boosts taste.
Know going in: There are no photos in the book. While that never bugs me, I also know it does bug some people and it may be important to you. Also I wish the pages had been glossy (easier to wipe clean) rather than the school-book style novel paper which also made the ingredient list hard to read since it was in a lighter grey. I did need my reading glasses because of that. I think it may have been fine if the font was bigger and maybe they made the font smaller to keep the book at 300 pages which is one of the cut-off points for books, but, if so, I wish when they'd decreased the size, they'd changed the color to black like the rest of the recipe.
Conclusion: In my perfect world, the pages and binding and font color would be more like a cookbook than a novel but I read it like a novel since it's full of information. The dishes, and I mean every dish I've made from it, has been 5 star and we never feel deprived cooking easy dishes with everyday ingredeints we have at home or can substitute with her suggestions. If nothing else, taste that dang addictive and decadent chocolate cake with peanut butter glaze. So I forgave throwing on my reading glasses after I tasted the dishes. Now get that nutritional info on a website somewhere and I'll be eternally grateful--That said, I still love it.
