There are some good substitution ideas in here, but especially in the dessert section there was 'way too much emphasis on fake food (fat-free and sugar-free pudding, for example), and there's already enough of that on the show.
Another big problem with this book is that the organization is poor. Several recipes called for another recipe to be made first (e.g. meatloaf sandwich made with leftover meatloaf), but they should have been listed alongside the original recipe, instead of being in separate sections.
Check out of the library first, before buying. If you already use sugar substitutes and sugar-free/fat-free convenience foods in your cooking, this book may have some new ideas. If you're looking for healthier recipes made with regular food that doesn't have additives, there are only a few recipes in this book that fit the bill.

Chef Devin Alexander has always been one of my favorite healthy cookbook authors. Her recipes are fairly easy, straightforward, and tasty. She has penned each of the Biggest Loser cookbooks (the original, Family Style, and Desserts) and - now - Flavors of the World.
I have used each of the Biggest Loser cookbooks regularly in my kitchen...and this new edition is no exception!Recipes such as Chicken & Sausage Gumbo, Indian Chicken Curry, Shrimp Toasts, and White Pizza just beg to be prepared. As usual, Devin has devised some innovative and unique healthy recipes (such as hollowing out a cucumber and filling it with tuna...to make a rice-less sushi roll).
The book is broken up into seven varieties of cuisine: Italian, Asian/Southeast, Mexican, Regional American, Mediterranean, European, and Desserts. None of the recipes require ingredients too hard to find (however, Devin has all sorts of "salt free" seasoning that I can never find in my supermarket? I guess you can look online).
Any downsides to the book? A few of the recipes seem like repeats from the other Biggest Loser cookbooks. There is yet another Spaghetti and Meatballs recipe, as well as recipes like Chicken-Fried Steak that have appeared in some of Devin's other publications. I also found the dessert section lacking in creativity and scope...we have a "Thai Fruit Salad" that has numerous chopped fruits sprinkled with lime zest and juice. How is that Thai?
These, however, are minor complaints. Flavors of the World is a solid, tasty, and worthy sequel to the popular Biggest Loser cookbooks. I expect nothing less from the series and from Devin. Enjoy!

Low-Fat-Low Calorie Quick & Easy Cookbook (Cooking Light) Review

I plan my weekly menus from this book every Sunday morning. There is something in there for every day of the week.... chicken, beef, pork, seafood and even pasta..... all low fat and low calorie. The recipes are so easy and the ingredients are typically your normal kitchen staples with an occassional item added to the normal shopping list.
There's nothing like getting home after a long day at work and still having to make dinner. That's where the Quick & Easy part comes in. These recipes make getting dinner on the table a snap. Usually with-in 30 minutes or less.
You can't go wrong with this book. Every recipe is easy to follow and tasts great. We haven't made 1 thing in the past 4 months that we did not enjoy and we cook from these cookbooks everyday. I had several other cookbooks where I had written on pages "YUCK!" or "NO GOOD" when I've tried a recipe and didn't like it. Not one of the Cooking Light recipes have I done this to. I've since thrown away all the cookbooks I had that are not Cooking Light.
I own 17 other Cooking Light cookbooks, some have easier recipes than others, but this one is my favorite. The taste of the meal is as if you had ordered it from a very good restaurant. My husband and I recently went on a cruise and he said "I like your cooking from those cookbooks better than the cruise food". What more can I say? Buy it, you'll love the way you look and feel. Slimmer and healthier.

This is the first cook book that has ever made sense to me. im a single guy and I actually have a job and don't have 12 hours to prepare a meal, especially before a date. i don't mind spending some money getting a meal together but i DONT want to spend alot of time. and i still want it to be cool. this cook book is awesome!! really straight forward, really fast, and everything came out great. it was hard to screw up the recipes which is good since when you are getting ready for a date, you kind of want to be as close to idiot-proof as possible. this is the most practical cook book ever

I Can't Believe It's Not Fattening: Over 150 Ridiculously Easy Recipes for the Super Busy Review

About a year ago, I first heard about Devin Alexander when reading a review for a "diet cookbook" by someone else. The quote was something like "anything by Devin Alexander is better than this". So, I bought the Biggest Loser cookbook, then The Most Decadent Diet Ever and Fast Food Fix. Now, I have I Can't Believe It's Not Fattening, and I am firmly convinced Devin Alexander is a genius. Her "secret" is this: food doesn't have to be plain to be healthy. Her recipes appeal to the food lover who wants to be healthier or lose weight-without compromising taste. Let's face it, most of us do not crave plain grilled chicken and steamed vegetables. All of her cookbooks are a little different: the Biggest Loser is a little more on the VERY low fat and calorie side; Fast Food Fix is geared for the fast food lover; Decadent Diet-well, I can't imagine who wouldn't love that one...unless it's someone who wants everything to be quick.I Can't Believe It's Not Fattening is specifically written to appeal to people who don't have a lot of time to cook. From that standpoint, I think she hits her mark and then some. The recipes sound fabulous, tasty, and EASY! So far, I've had the book for about 48 hours and have made the mini frittatas with herbed goat cheese, the pb&j oatmeal, breakfast fried rice, pierogies with kielbasa and sauerkraut, quick crunchy potato chips (twice) and fixed up french onion dip, and the chocolate banana boat. And worked two-twelve hour+ days. I loved every one of them. I can't claim to have tried every recipe in the book yet; I can tell you that I'm picky and demanding, and I have not yet found one of her recipes that I didn't like. Most of these recipes taste just as "decadent" as her previous recipes but with more "shortcuts"...using storebought dressings, jarred marinara, or herbs in a tube. Personally, I prefer making homemade salad dressings or my own fat free marinara, but there's no reason that these couldn't be substituted IF you don't mind the additional time. If you are looking for healthy, low fat food that will taste fabulous AND not take up too much time to cook, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!

The Biggest Loser Quick & Easy Cookbook: Simply Delicious Low-calorie Recipes to Make in a Snap Review

The Biggest Loser Quick & Easy Cookbook is the first of the series that I have read or purchased, so I cannot compare it to any of the others. If you are in the market for a cookbook that promotes a healthy eating plan rather than a "diet book", this one looks encouraging. The author is promoting a "clean" and healthy eating and exercise routine, eating fresh and natural foods whenever possible.
The author began by confirming what is probably one of the biggest problems people have regarding eating well...the failure to plan ahead and thereby falling into the trap of grab-as-you-go cooking and eating. This is definitely an issue for anyone who works (in or out of the home), has children, or just likes to live an active lifestyle. She goes on to explain how having basic healthy food on hand will help you to make better choices when it comes time to prepare your meals.
Next the book goes on to list and describe those basic ingredients as well as cooking tools and supplies. She mentions brand names when appropriate and some of the recipes the ingredient will be useful for. She also gives helpful suggestions on where to find them.
The Biggest Loser eating plan is covered by discussing calories, serving sizes, healthy fats, product labels, suggestions on understanding levels of hunger, etc.
A 20-minute exercise routine is covered in great detail with thorough descriptions of the proper way to do each exercise and illustrations of people doing each one.
At this point in the book, the recipes begin. I will list just a few examples here so you will have an idea of the types of recipes you will find in this book.
Breakfast: Sausage Feta Pepper Bake, Steak and Egg Breakfast Bowl, Margherita Breakfast Pizza.
Appetizers and snacks: Asian Crab Salad-Topped Brown Rice Crisps, Blanca Arugula Pizza, Crunch Cajun Chickpeas, Baked Babybels.
Soups and sandwiches: Olive Chicken Salad Pita, Herb Turkey Sandwich, Cold Cucumber Soup.
Salads and sides: Lobster Slaw Salad, Pomegranate Spinach Salad, Mexican Tabbouli, Fried Mushroom Parmesan Bake, Parm-Garlic Roasted Green Beans.
Main dishes: Easy-Breezy BBQ Pot Roast Dinner, Chili-Rubbed London Broil, Kids' Favorite Chicken "Pucks", Indian Chicken Simmer, 3-Ingredient Meat Loaf, Fresh-As-Can-Be Jalapeno Lime Scallops.
Desserts and beverages: Chocolate Raspberry Dreamers, MMM...Monkey Trail Mix, Punched-Up Pina Colada.
The pictures are excellent and will really whet your appetite. Scattered throughout the book are suggestions and favorite recipe ideas from many of the contestants from prior seasons of the Biggest Loser show along with the contestant's pictures.
Though the recipes may sound and look like gourmet dishes, the ingredient list for each is only about 4 to 6 ingredients on average, with just a few exceptions. Most of the ingredients are found in the average grocery store, but some may require a trip to your local health food store like Whole Foods.
In conclusion, I would call this a cookbook for the "whole body" in that it is not your typical newest-fad diet book; it is a book that combines simple exercise, healthy food choices, and some great looking recipes. I will update this later with comments on specific recipes as I give them a try.

This book contains many healthy recipes that follow Gillian McKeith's formula for well-being. However these will probably not be recipes that the younger members of a family with `picky' appetites will look forward to; i.e. fruit salad with warm pear sauce, eggplant and chick pea tagine. You will have more than 150 recipes of a different sort to serve though.
Gillian's guidelines contain the philosophy: "her way or the highway". She describes her guidelines, her viewpoint and gives several checklists to get you organized if you desire to try her ideas. The recipes include; juices and smoothies, breakfasts, soups, salads and lunch box meals, main meals, snacks, treats, stocks, sauces and dressings. There are not many pictures of the completed recipes themselves.
This would be good for those who want to try a formula for healthy eating.

I buy a lot of recipe books, but most I don't use much. This one is different. I'll be cooking with it all the time.
A collection of 125 recipes, it is not meant to represent an entire diet. Instead, it's a cookbook of especially yummy dishes that just happen to be healthy, too. The recipes can be the foundation of a new way of eating, or serve as treats if you have already reached a healthy weight.
Author Devin Alexander makes it easy. Each recipe is either 100, 200, 300, 400 or 500 calories (within 10 calories), so it's easy to track your calories without a calculator. The dishes are, for the most part, healthy versions of your old favorite fattening ones. So, for example, instead of the typical 746-calorie, 38-grams-of-fat slice of chocolate cake, you can have a slice of Dark Chocolate Layer Cake with Buttercream Frosting for 294 calories and 6 grams of fat.
Each recipe also includes how many grams it contains of carbohydrates, cholesterol, fat, saturated fat, fiber, protein and sodium. Most also have this data for the traditional recipe, so you can easily see what you're "missing."
As someone who has managed a 55-pound weight loss for 16 years, Alexander knows her stuff. At the beginning of the book, she gives you options: Do you want to count calories or not? The author details a simple diet plan either way (based on your gender, age and activity level), shows you how to put together a weekly meal plan, and covers the importance of exercise.
The book itself is beautifully produced, with glossy paper, lush color photos and color-coded text.

Based on the NBC hit show "The Biggest Loser," this colorful cookbook is a plus to anybody's library that is trying to lose weight or even just eat healthy. The promise of the book is that eating healthy can be quick and delicious AND it doesn't have to mean bland, tasteless food- and the book delivers.
Readers will find a short review of the Biggest Loser's way to lose weight- which is sensible- you eat right and exercise. Then comes the heart of the book- over 100 recipes for the various meals like breakfast, snacks, etc. And unlike a lot of cookbooks, each recipe shows you exactly how many calories, fat grams, protein grams, carb grams, fiber grams, sodium, and cholesterol it contains- which is nice for a wide variety of other populations such as those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease.
A sensible and practical cookbook, a lot of people will probably get their money's worth. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if a shoulder problem keeps you from getting all the benefits of lifting weights.

This books gets right down to it. No useless filler pages showing you how to cut green beans, or how many variety of tomatoes there are. You get 330 recipes, and for the price of the book that about 5 cents a recipe. And they are tasty and innovative!
There is a small section in the front of the book about weight loss and how to figure you BMI and caloric intake needed. There is even a 14 day meal planner to get you started eating healthy.
Each recipe is laid out in a very easy to read format and shows the calories per serving and prep time. The recipes run the gamut from appetizers, soups, salads, entrees, and much more. I have tried a few and they are incredibly tasty. You won't even know you're dieting!
The best thing is that the recipes are uncomplicated while being satisfying and low in calories. There is literally a recipe on every page. You are getting alot for your money here.
