Hungry Girl 1-2-3: The Easiest, Most Delicious, Guilt-Free Recipes on the Planet Review

I have purchased all three of Ms. Lillien cook books. The first two are great however focus mostly on sweets. I am a 52 year old woman who is deficient in the "I must have chocolate now" chromosome so most of those chapters went untried. 1-2-3 is the best of the bunch. This book provides healthy meals. The recipes are very basic; if you can read you can cook. So far I have made the College breakfast burritto, So Fancy Fish Pack (foil section) and Jammed with Cheese Stuffed French Toast all excellent. Tonight is Chop Chop Beef Stir Fry. There has been some criticism of her use of some ingredients. This book's recipes are more "whole foods" than some of the others. If artificial sweetener, non fat cheese, egg beaters etc. are so offensive to some then substiute and make allowances for the calories. To me the whole point of Ms. Lillien's approach to cooking is just that; start cooking. Don't rely on take out, fast food or sticking some cardboard box in the microwave. It's cooking, not nuclear physics.
Normally the cute recipe names and preamble "Rat(atouille) Pack - 'too bad Frank, Dino and Sammy aren't around to try this'" would annoy me, but it is, I believe, Ms. Lillien's genuine personality. Moreover I am impressed that a young woman would even know who the hell F,D&S were.
Keep up the good work. This old broad is a fan.

I Can't Believe It's Not Fattening: Over 150 Ridiculously Easy Recipes for the Super Busy Review

About a year ago, I first heard about Devin Alexander when reading a review for a "diet cookbook" by someone else. The quote was something like "anything by Devin Alexander is better than this". So, I bought the Biggest Loser cookbook, then The Most Decadent Diet Ever and Fast Food Fix. Now, I have I Can't Believe It's Not Fattening, and I am firmly convinced Devin Alexander is a genius. Her "secret" is this: food doesn't have to be plain to be healthy. Her recipes appeal to the food lover who wants to be healthier or lose weight-without compromising taste. Let's face it, most of us do not crave plain grilled chicken and steamed vegetables. All of her cookbooks are a little different: the Biggest Loser is a little more on the VERY low fat and calorie side; Fast Food Fix is geared for the fast food lover; Decadent Diet-well, I can't imagine who wouldn't love that one...unless it's someone who wants everything to be quick.I Can't Believe It's Not Fattening is specifically written to appeal to people who don't have a lot of time to cook. From that standpoint, I think she hits her mark and then some. The recipes sound fabulous, tasty, and EASY! So far, I've had the book for about 48 hours and have made the mini frittatas with herbed goat cheese, the pb&j oatmeal, breakfast fried rice, pierogies with kielbasa and sauerkraut, quick crunchy potato chips (twice) and fixed up french onion dip, and the chocolate banana boat. And worked two-twelve hour+ days. I loved every one of them. I can't claim to have tried every recipe in the book yet; I can tell you that I'm picky and demanding, and I have not yet found one of her recipes that I didn't like. Most of these recipes taste just as "decadent" as her previous recipes but with more "shortcuts"...using storebought dressings, jarred marinara, or herbs in a tube. Personally, I prefer making homemade salad dressings or my own fat free marinara, but there's no reason that these couldn't be substituted IF you don't mind the additional time. If you are looking for healthy, low fat food that will taste fabulous AND not take up too much time to cook, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!

Naturally Skinny: 100 Organic Recipes Under 350 Calories Review

Okay, anyone can publish an "organic" cookbook by putting the word "organic" in front of every ingredient. However, I'm giving this a 5-star rating simply because the recipes are so great!
I first made the Whole Grain Pancakes. I used all of the ingredients listed (minus the "organic) and then entered the recipe in MyFitnessPal so I could accurately measure the calories. The book...182 calories. MFP...183 calories. I tried this with several recipes and the calories were pretty much on target.
The ingredients she used for the dishes can be found in any supermarket, and that's always a big plus. I've purchased several other "low-cal" cookbooks that ended up collecting dust simply because I couldn't find the ingredient and if I did, it was usually way expensive.
The dishes are delicious. I love the way everything is broken up by category. She includes a "sides" category, with the caloric value pretty low. I can create an entire meal simply by choosing something from each category, and I love that I can compensate in one area (say, the main course) and then be able to choose a higher-calorie desert (although we usually have deserts listed as an after-dinner snack).
Yes, it was a little irritating to constantly read "organic" in front of every ingredient but for the price I paid ($4.99 Kindle edition), this really was well-worth it. My husband likes the fact that he's not regulated to the same breakfasts each day just to keep the calorie count down. At $4.99, this was a steal!

Hungry Girl: 200 Under 200: 200 Recipes Under 200 Calories Review

Before I purchased this book, I was so excited from all the reviews, only come to find out that 90% of the recipes in the book call for some sugar substitute of some kind, which gives me headaches. So if you are thinking of buying this book but don't enjoy artificial sweeteners, DON'T BUY IT. But, if you don't mind them, go for it.
