I have to say this really is a lovely book for children (and adults alike). I stumbled upon it by accident at Williams Sonoma and decided it was a perfect cookbook. The reason is because the recipes are for real foods and snacks (and not for cheesy, greasy junk that other kids' cookbooks have). The book is divided up by courses (or sections): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner; Breads and Crackers; Cookies; Cakes; Pies, Pastries and Squares; Candy, Confections and Cool Treats. My favorites: Paddy Thai Noodles and Dumpling Raviolis are delicious, healthy and easy (but just easy enough so that there is still a bit of a challenge and sense of accomplishment for the child). Which brings me to another REALLY EXCELLENT feature of this book - it's a book that's not just geared towards little girls. There's a vague image of a child holding a cupcake on the cover of the book but you can't tell if the child is a boy or a girl. The book is for all children - boys and girls alike - which is a very positive departure from all of the children's cookbooks out there that show little girls cooking in the kitchen with their moms. I collect vintage cookbooks and there are a few that (though very cute for the time) show ridiculous stereotypes (but are funny when looked at in the context of the period in which they were published).
Moving on...the cakes and desserts are really beautiful and especially nice because some of the recipes have instructions for two sizes. The alphabet cookies are pretty and fun to make because you paint the icing on with paint brushes (my sister and I decorated Christmas cookies one year with the paint brush technique and it was a lot of fun).
I would have given this book the full 5 stars because the content really deserves a 5 but there were 2 things that I felt could be improved if ever more editions come out (and neither of these items are the author's fault, by the way). The first is the binding of the book - I think that for a book for children, a hard cover version would have been a lot easier to handle as this one's soft cover binding doesn't stay open easily. The other thing was trying to find bakeware for the smaller versions of the cakes (smaller than full-sized cake pans but larger than toy-sized pans). I really had a hard time finding the correct size bakeware for some of the smaller cakes. Maybe a buyer's guide for specialty bakeware could be included because frankly, these smaller cakes are well suited to small dinner parties for adults as well when one doesn't want a giant cake that will end up leftover and wasted in the trash. The cake sizes are really excellent and I did eventually find a few pieces that were properly sized (Williams Sonoma and some internet specialty shops had a few pans that worked) but it took me quite a while to locate these.
But otherwise, I'd say the best modern cookbook for children available today.

Recommendation for this book came from NPR's Faith Middleton. Fabulous,quick, easy receipes with ingredients that are common in most kitchens. Just a little extra shopping if you're not used to cooking light. Substitutions are easy to make. I love the breakfast wraps with tofu and leftovers can be refrigerated. I'm eating healthy all summer, losing weight, and feeling great. Oh yeah, they taste great too.

In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.
This installment, the Book of Sandwiches, starts with a brief glossary of typical sandwich ingredients, and then presents recipe suggestions for all major types of this perhaps most variable of all snacks, from tea sandwiches and hearty sandwiches to party sandwiches and canapes. Special chapters are dedicated to layered, open-face, long, hot, and sweet sandwiches. Classics such as the good old BLT, chili dogs, croquet monsieur, egg and bacon rolls, pitas, club sandwiches, ham and cheese combinations, Reuben and steak sandwiches appear next to unique recipes such as chocolate and orange brioches, Indian spiced chicken on Nan bread, mango and crab sandwiches, melon and ham fingers and pork-celery crunch.

I have tried many of the recipes in this book, and while they are not all unqualfied successes, enough of them are that I number this among my most useful recipe books. Ms. Gold and I share a basic sensibility about simplicity and flavors - simple, robust, up-front. I find that the add-ons make a big difference, and of course, I tend to tweak recipes anyway - the Baked Olives (in red wine and olive oil) are great as given, but with the addition of some garlic or rosemary, it's terrific. The deep-fried cheese was a disaster - I got a huge mess in the pan, with the coating stuck to the bottom and the runny cheese all over everything - ugh. The pasta with broccoli sauce is pretty bland - next time I'll massage it with some lemon juice or pepper flakes or something. But other recipes are great, and provide quick and easy starting points for me. I definitely recommend the book, and have given it to a couple of non-cooks, who really liked it.

Many fun ideas for crafts that don't require Martha Stewart skills. Made the cookie cutter soaps with my girlfriends and had a great time. Plan on making the vacation placemat this summer on vacation. The food also looks great. The picture of the black bean and salsa salad made my mouth water in the store. I will be making that soon. Also appreciate the adult versions of thirst quenching recipes. Instructions and ideas are basic and that's just what I need.

I enjoyed the wonderfully festive pictures and I was able to glean some ideas from her book as a starting point for my own Hallowe'en projects. However, I'm not so sure there is enough substance nor wholly original ideas to make it a worthwhile purchase. It is a fun book to thumb through but most of the "magic" is to be found in the photographs. I tried some of the recipies: the cocoa cobweb cupcakes were not "chocolatey" enough and the pumpkin soup was okay but not spectacular.

I have a number of Hugh Carpenter cook books and find all of them to be excellent. Some of the recipies in Fast Appetizers appear in his other books. The beauty of this book is the multiple choices and in many cases the simplicity of making different appetizers which will have your guests asking for the recipe. If you are looking for rave reviews on your appetizers, this is the book for you.
