Student's Go Vegan Cookbook: Over 135 Quick, Easy, Cheap, and Tasty Vegan Recipes Review

I bought this book right when it first came out entirely upon the strength of Carole Raymond's other cookbook, the "Student's Vegetarian Cookbook," which I would describe as the perfect cookbook for people who can't cook. I was expecting more of the same easy, cheap, quick, and great tasting recipes I had found there. Unfortunately, the "Student's Go Vegan Cookbook" is a disappointment on every single one of those attributes. The recipes found here are more complicated, more expensive, more time consuming, and just less useful than the ones in the previous book.
Now, don't get me wrong, there are some hidden gems in this book as well, but that just it: they're hidden! Time and time again I find myself hungry and flipping through this book saying to myself: "nope... nope... nope..." because everything I see isn't a meal, it's just part of a meal. If you filter out the endless array of salads, dips, dressings, toppings, and side dishes you are left with a scant few actual meals. I'm an active (mostly) vegan male, and need hearty and healthy food to keep me running, not salads and side dishes! The idea seems to be that the author is giving you all the building blocks so you can go and create your own meal. All I can say is that's what people who can cook do... and if I could do that I wouldn't need this book in the first place!
I have no idea why Carole Raymond decided to organize the book like this. I don't have time to cook all day and combine 6 recipes into one full meal - that's why I bought this book. The great thing about the Student's Vegetarian Cookbook is that almost every page seems to have a complete meal on it, and the same thing just can't be said about the Vegan version. As a warning, I also find the book to be very heavy on Tempeh and Tofu recipes. I personally cannot stand Tempeh and don't like to eat tofu every day, so that also discounts a large number of recipes for me.
In considering this book, one does need to realize the reality that cooking vegan is harder then cooking vegetarian... but I don't think it has to be THIS hard. I think Carole Raymond needs to re-evaluate exactly who her target audience is here. I generally like Raymond's recipes, and I'd love to see a stripped down version of this book, with a renewed focus on quick, easy, complete meals. As things stand, there are some great recipes in this book... but I just don't find it all that useful.

Raising Vegetarian Children : A Guide to Good Health and Family Harmony Review

Joanne Stepaniak and Vesanto Melina have created a much needed resource to serve parents and families, caregivers, and medical practitioners alike. After a thorough introduction discussing all aspects of vegetarian food and life choices (emotional, community, and psychological), the authors give a sound nutritional introduction. They then offer advice chronologically, beginning with nutrition for breastfeeding moms and continuing through introducing solids and feeding picky teens. The authors take a very down-to-earth approach, offering advice for parents of kids who are feeling alienated, or who want to eat meat away from home.

Each stage of life has different nutritional concerns. Stepaniak and Melina address the stages with age-specific menu plans using recipes from Part 3 of the book. The authors begin Part 3 by giving some helpful cooking recommendations for new or aspiring "healthy" cooks. There are many easy-to-prepare, kid-friendly recipes, replicating non-vegetarian favorites. Not all recipes have a 100% whole foods approach, and some include ingredients like "veggie dogs" or "veggie meats." The recipes range from beverages and breakfasts to snacks and entrees. All of the recipes include nutritional information, even the desserts. The book also has a very well organized index that makes it easy to pick up and find a piece of useful information. Raising Vegetarian Children ends with a large resource guide and bibliography, so those who want to dig deeper also know where to go.-- Reviewed by Amy O'Neill Houck

The Vegetarian Lunchbasket: Over 225 Easy, Low-Fat, Nutritious Recipes for the Quality-Conscious Family on the Go Review

A vegetarian for over twenty years and mother of three children, Linda Haynes has lots of experience in preparing vegetarian lunches. She shares her expertise in The Vegetarian Lunchbasket, a collection of over 225 mouth-watering recipes. Her book was first published in 1990, and updated in 1994 and 1999 to reflect changes in nutritional information and availability of products. Haynes developed most of her recipes through experimentation. That enables her to advise readers which ingredients may be replaced with substitutes to accommodate different tastes and budgets. She also shares stories of her experiences, like learning that there is a difference between baking yeast and brewer's yeast when it comes to making bread. At all times, she emphasizes the practical, both in ingredients and techniques. The first chapter provides an amazing variety of recipes for breads and sandwich wrappers. A simple one is lightly steamed cabbage leaves. The next chapter is full of even more suggestions for fillings and spreads. Many of the soups and thermos foods are designed to be made the night before, to provide a delicious evening meal, with leftovers heated for the next day's lunches. The salad and salad dressing recipes allow you to leave wilted lettuce drenched in runny dressing behind forever. Main dishes like "Tofu Telephones" or "Somewhat Knishes" also work well for a meal the night before with leftovers going into the next day's lunch boxes or on a family picnic. The condiments and snacks chapter includes items like nut milk and yogurt chips (both incredibly simple to make!). As does most writers of cookbooks, Haynes ends with a chapter on desserts. She maintains the richness, but makes her desserts a bit more healthy with tricks like a tofu substitute for eggs, and pureed vegetables for liquids. Although nutritious and healthy, the recipes are all tasty. Practicing vegetarians and those curious about what vegetarians can eat other than lettuce and carrot sticks will find a wealth of practical and easy recipes in The Vegetarian Lunchbasket. Although some recipes include dairy products, many are suitable for vegans. And don't be fooled by the title--most of the recipes makes equally tasty main meals! Paper, 205 pp. -- Sandra I. Smith, Reviewer
