15-Minute Vegetarian Recipes: 200 Quick, Easy, and Delicious Recipes the Whole Family Will Love Review

This is the best vegetarian cookbook I've ever used. Every dish I have made from this volume has been delicious, easy, and quick. While some of the recipes take a little planning ahead (ie, calling for cooked rice) the majority really do whip up in no time, and the combinations are creative, tasty and generally quite healthy. I find that with most cookbooks, I make a few recipes, and then lose interest because they are hit or miss. I've worked my way through at least half of the recipes in this book and always turn back to it. I would most highly recommend this cookbook for anyone who is low on time, but still wants interesting, delicious meals!

This is one of the top five cookbooks I plan on rescuing in case of house fire. Just kidding, but I would immediately go out and get it again! Buy this book -- it's worth it just for the mac and cheeze, orange chick'n, and buffalo bites recipes. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Did I mention the mac and cheeze? It's not a nutritional yeast sauce! It's incredible!
This book has a good range of simple idea-type recipes -- as in, recipes you can really put together quickly and throw in your own substitutions -- plus more still-easy-but-complex-in-flavor recipes for the scratch cook. Oh and I can't say enough about the barbecue sauce, too. I'm picky picky picky about BBQ sauce and the one in this book plus the one in Veganomicon are to live for.
This is my first attempt to start reviewing some of the zillions of cookbooks I own. Happy cooking!

I received my copy of "Color me vegan" in the mail yesterday and I couldn't wait to start cooking. I think I read every single recipe and I was excited to see that they were original and covered a very wide range of produce. I was wondering how Colleen was going to manage writing recipes for starters, soups, main courses, side dishes and desserts of every color. Well, she did. From then creamy avocado mousse (delicious green recipe) to the red chard pie (red recipe, of course) , this book is chock full of tips, nutritional information, variations, and even some food history.
I like the fact that you don't have to constraint yourself to the ingredients listed in the recipe. The book packs some much information that you can make your own choices about how you would like your recipe to look and taste like. I recommend that you read the entire recipe, as well as the notes on the top and bottom before you start cooking.The book itself is very easy to read, it has clear instructions and doesn't call for too many ingredients like other books do. The ingredients are easy to find if they aren't in your pantry already. There isn't a picture for every single recipe, but the pictures in the book are really beautiful. They make you want to cook.
If you are new to veganism, this is a good way to start cooking new food. After testing some of this recipes, you will realize that vegan food is not "rabbit food" or bland food. Rather, it is healthful and delicious.Last night I made a pie, a dessert and a vegan cheese. Everything was yummy!

I was a cookbook tester for this cookbook. I tried it on my husband, unsuspecting family members and unsuspecting friends. The recipes were a big hit and would even shock others by saying they were low fat and good for you! Not only is it a cookbook, but it has a lots of tips, tricks and includes a nice section about nutrition. I made approximately 50 recipes from the book total with most of them being huge hits. I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone whether you are vegan, vegetarian or just interested in incorporating plant-based meals in your diet.
Also I credit this cookbook with teaching me how to cook tofu. The lettuce wraps with Hoison-mustard tofu recipe taught me an easy technique for cooking tofu that I've been able to incorporate whenever I want tofu. The basic baked tofu recipe also gave me an easy technique for baking tofu that again I've been able to expand upon.
The cookbook also includes a variety of different recipes. You want Thai? Ethiopian? Mexican? Italian? Vietnamese? Peruvian? Caribbean? Indian? Middle eastern? The book has you covered. What if you want traditional American style food? Well the book has that as well.
I have also gone through the book and listed my favorite recipes and things I'd recommend and added a star next to the ones that are probably my top favorites.

Vive le Vegan: Simple, Delectable Recipes for the Everyday Vegan Family Review

...it is an informative book on healthy living. Besides numerous nutritious recipes for breakfast and brunch, baked goods, sauces, spreads, soups, main courses and other things, Burton provides advice for "Feeding Your Vegan Baby & Toddler" which is divided into age groups for 6-9 months, 9-12 months, 12-18 months, 18-24 months and 2+ years. In the section "Additional Notes for Feeding Baby" Burton discusses organic foods, prepackaged foods vs. home-made and food preparation tips.
Another helpful section that offers practical information is "Cooking Guides & Notes" where the author provides guides to cooking grains and beans and other "Cooking Notes." A comprehensive glossary is also useful.
Burton's support of hemp foods is a welcome addition to this recipe book and will hopefully encourage other cookbook authors to feature this nutritious food in their books. Not only does Burton include a section on "Hemp Foods," but she also mentions the importance of hemp in the Introduction.
"This is one of the few cookbooks you will see that features hemp products. Hemp seed nuts and nut butter provide complete protein and essential fatty acids that we can only get from our diet. Hemp seed oil is also rich in the essential fatty acids." (page 14)
Another interesting aspect of Burton's book involves the relatively small number of recipes that contain soy. Burton's reason for minimizing her use of soy is simple. "I suspect that many vegetarians and vegans rely a little too heavily on soy, and while I still include it in my family's diet, no one food should be consumed excessively." (page 14) Burton also includes numerous wheat-free recipes and recipes which feature a wheat-free option.
It's nice to see that vegan recipe books are becoming more popular. Vive le Vegan! is one of the better vegan cookbooks that I've seen as it not only offers a good selection of easy-to-make, nutritious meals and snacks, but it contains lots of other important information as well. Those who turned to vegetarianism due to a love of and respect for animals will want to get a copy of Burton's book and consider taking the next step to veganism. As Eric Marcus points out in the Foreword:
"Many people assume that concerns over cruelty can be addressed by becoming a lacto-ovo vegetarian, and buying free-range eggs and organic milk. Unfortunately, welfare standards for these foods are utterly lacking. And, just as troubling, these foods depend on slaughter every bit as much as their factory farmed counterparts. There is simply no such thing as animal agriculture without suffering and killing - the economics just don't allow it."
Vive le Vegan! will be of interest to everyone looking for interesting, nutritious, cruelty-free recipes.--N. Glenn Perrett

I'm not completely a vegan eater, but have been gradually cleaning up my eating over the past few years and really like having more fresh, healthy food in my diet. The one problem I'd had was that so many of the vegetarian and vegan recipes did take a long time to prepare. And while I'm an excellent cook, these days I have other things I want to put my attention on - like playing with my grandson and writing a book. So it was with complete utter delight that I received "Vegan Success" and started to use it. The crowning joy was when my husband, who told me when we got married that he didn't like and didn't eat vegetables, asked for seconds and sometimes even thirds. I think the success is that Susan and her partner are busy people too - and so they've really tested these recipes under real-life conditions. Anyway, I love being able to get genuinely healthy meals that my husband enjoys in a quick hurry. I'd recommend this book whether you love to cook or not - it's that straightforward.

The 30-Minute Vegan: Over 175 Quick, Delicious, and Healthy Recipes for Everyday Cooking Review

As soon as I heard the title, The 30 Minute Vegan, I fell in love with this book. As with any great page-turner, I settled into a comfy chair and read through it from cover to cover. Every recipe beckoned to me, and just reading through the ingredients, I knew that these were going to be some very impressive dishes. Discovering a book filled with 175 mouth-watering recipes that could be made in 30 minutes or less was like a dream come true. If I could prepare great-tasting, satisfying, hearty vegan meals in much less time than I was accustomed to spending in the kitchen, then The 30 Minute Vegan would be a godsend.
But where to begin? Because I happened to have some nice, juicy ripe mangos on hand, I started with the Live Mango Gazpacho Soup. While most gourmet raw food dishes are time consuming (all that soaking, chopping, dehydrating, etc.), and high in fat from nuts, seeds, and avocado, this delightful little soup turned out to be a wonderful surprise! It's actually simple to prepare and made for a sensational low-fat summertime dish. As I have a garden full of mint, I substituted it for the cilantro called for in the recipe, and it blended quite nicely with the lime juice and mangoes. That's one of the things I love about The 30 Minute Vegan: Unlike most other cookbooks, the way the recipes are presented, you are actually encouraged and inspired to add your own culinary creativity. I love that feeling of freedom. I wasn't afraid to experiment on the first go-round with any recipe. The authors made me feel like I couldn't mess it up.
The Monk Bowl's, "Zen simplicity," as it is described in the book, is also co-author Mark Reinfeld's favorite meal to prepare. So I couldn't resist trying such an enlightened and inspired recipe. It's made with quinoa, which is noted for containing more high-quality protein than any other grain. I love it's lighter-than-brown-rice consistency, although this dish would be wonderful with any kind of rice, too. I chose to use roasted tempeh instead of tofu, (one of the suggested variations on this recipe), and added sliced red bell pepper and edamame to the mix of broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower. Served with nutritional yeast, soy sauce, flax seed oil, and a sprinkling of toasted sesame seeds, the lightly-steamed veggies and fluffy quinoa made for a hearty and satisfying meal. I think that the next time I make this dish, I'll try it with the peanut sauce suggested as another variation of this recipe.
I was thrilled to see that a simplified version of the prize-winning recipe from last year's Most Remarkable Vegan Recipe Contest was thoughtfully included in The 30 Minute Vegan. Live Un-Stir-Fry with Cauliflower Rice was as fun to prepare as it was vibrantly eye-appealing and palate-pleasing. The cauliflower "rice" really fooled my taste buds, and the spicy vegetable dressing had just the right balance of sweetness and piquancy.
Extremely helpful sidebars are peppered throughout the book: "Quicker and Easier," "Tips and Tricks," "Superfoods for Health," and "If You Have More Time" enhance the value of this book a thousandfold. As do the opening chapters, "Getting Started" and "Preparation Basics," which includes grain and dried bean cooking charts. It's wonderfully time-saving to have all of this information in one place.
Since I feel the need to get my hands on a copy of every vegan cookbook that comes along, I have a stack of them collecting dust on my bookshelf. But like the authors' earlier books, Vegan World Fusion Cuisine and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw, The 30 Minute Vegan has found a permanent home in my kitchen, where its pages will quickly become worn, torn, and stained. And I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of this book. Can you say Chocolate Ganache Pie?

Table for Two has been a main source of meals for me. Yes, I live alone, with two cats. I don't have a lot of time, space, or money to cook. Enter Table for Two. Possibly Jo's most lifesaving book for vegans strapped for time and space such as I.
There are a lot of vegan cookbooks out there not suitable for new vegans. This is not one of them. Actually, all of Jo's books are suitable for new vegans! It is chock full of information to ease the pain of leaning to cook such as "Basic Cooking Terms", "Cupboard Staples", and even "Kid-Pleasing Recipes". I have to disagree with the latter...they tickle me pink and I'm no kid!
To start, the book has a great "Lay-Flat Binding" cover. Very convenient in the kitchen. It has recipes for every occasion, breakfast, lunch and dinner. I love starting my Sunday's with "Peanut Butter Banana Pancakes". Oh my! So delicious and still manage to stay in the realm of healthy eating! Another favorite for me and my workmates is Peanut Butter & Jelly Muffins. Those always go over well :-) Preparing dinner? Try a side of "Spicy Black-Eyed Pea Salad" or "Warm Dutch Potato Salad". There is a killer recipe for "Thousand Island Dressing" as well. Low on fat, high on taste! "Pan-Handle Chili" is a bi-weekly recipe for me. This recipe even freezes well for those who are actually a Table for One :) Another favorite is "Old World Cabbage Soup". It is JUST like I remember it from the Polish and Jewish restaurants my grandparents took me too as a child. The tomatoey base of this hearty soup really brings me back. Some vegans feel that they will never have another grilled cheese as long as they live. Not so. "Toasted or Grilled Cheeze Sandwiches" are delicious and they actually melt! Imagine! Cheezy goodness with a pickle spear on the side. Remember those days? Anyone can make a bean burrito but be honest...If you are like me it's usually a can of pre-mushed beans plopped into a tortilla. The "Bean Burritos" on page 101 will keep you wanting more...hearty and authentic.
There is an extensive variation to stir-fries with "Stir-Fries Tonight!" "Aunt Rose's Marinara Sauce" is so delicious and simple...you'll never pop the top off another jar of pre-made sauce again. There is an entire section on my favorite...potatoes! and grains and pasta. "Stuffed Sweet Potatoes", "Aunt Shayna's Potato Cakes" (yum yummy!), "Cheezy Macaroni" and "Brown Rice Croquettes" to name a few. Are you ready for dessert? "Schoolyard Oatmeal Cookies", better than mom used to make! A favorite of mine and my non-vegetarian boyfriend is "Maple Banana Custard" topped off with some "Carob Fudge Sauce". Decadent and you'd think a little naughty...but again, this is vegan cooking and the dessert is low fat.
This nowhere near completes the extensive span in this book, but I hope it gives you (vegan and non-vegan, young and old) a better idea of Table For Two. It is a staple in my house and a staple to my health. Enjoy!

The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook: Healthful, Healing Recipes for Life Review

I purchased this book anticipating condition specific recipes,however, the coverage of the doshas and the problems caused by imbalance is superficial at best. The recipes provide a tasty introduction to mostly Indian style vegetarian food. Many are labor intensive and quite heavy on the carbs and a number involve frying. A few require exotic ingredients that may not be easily accessible outside of urban areas. No nutritional information is provided.
The book is readable and the author has a pleasant, conversational style. The recipes I've tried have all been satisfactory, including the vegetable dishes, dals, pickles,lassis and rice puddings. The book is not limited to Indian cooking-there are also recipes for a fat free muesli, gazpacho and a refreshing fruit soup. There are suggested menus that are a bit starchy for my tastes and a cleansing/fasting program. Cursory chapters on yoga and aromatherapy are presented but without real depth. There is nothing on herbal supplementation and skimpy instructions on implementing the cleansing program. If your primary focus is on healing, you would be better served by offerings by Letha Haddady or Barbara Proust. If you are looking for tasty ways to include more vegetables in your diet, you will be satisfied by this book.

This cookbook is the antidote for the question often posed by well-meaning non-vegans: "don't you find a vegan diet limiting, with only vegetables and tofu?"
I've cooked several of the dishes, all of which have been hits with vegan and non-vegan eaters - satisfying even to my meat-eating friends who believe only meat makes a meal! I served the squash gnocchi recently at a dinner party, and my guests were bowled over by it (it was worth every minute of effort). A cold cauliflower salad with a dressing involving capers was outstanding.
What I most enjoy about the book is its quintessentially mediterranean nature: simple, fresh, uncomplicated, and absolutely delicious. Having grown up in an Italian family, I've hungered for vegan recipes with mediterranean roots that are not the usual pasta and sauce fare. This book has this and more.
While I enjoy cooking with and eating soy products, this book takes a creative approach that doesn't rely on this as many vegan cookbooks do. It also has recipes appealing to every level, from the person wanting only a few ingredients and easy prep to the experienced cook willing to invest a good amount of time. Buy this book - you won't regret it!

Vegan Soul Kitchen: Fresh, Healthy, and Creative African-American Cuisine Review

As a cook and food lover with a heart, my choice not to eat animals is the reason I became vegan. "Vegan Soul Kitchen" by Bryant Terry caught my eye for a couple reasons, the main one being that after moving to the South about 3 months ago, I decided that I'd learn to cook southern food. I was raised in Asia, and had absolutely no exposure to either Southern Food nor "soul food", however I loved the vegan soul food that I've had in Seattle over the past year. I was therefore, thrilled to see a recipe for "Open Faced BBQ Tempeh Sandwich with carrot-cayenne coleslaw" on page 12. The ingredients were readily available even here in the South (at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's) and the BBQ tempeh sandwich was absolutely delicious! The only thing that I did differently was to bake my own Focaccia bread, instead of buying it already prepared. The "Minimalist Survival Snack Mix" on page 44 is a great snack when you don't have time for a sit down breakfast, or as an alternative to "not so healthful" snacks sold at the grocery store. My favorite recipe so far is the "Sweet Cornmeal Coconut Butter Drop Biscuits" on page 158. And yes, the recipe is vegan and no "real butter" is used. It's still delicious though!! I can't wait to try the rest of the recipes in this amazing book.
Terry doesn't appear to be vegan anymore but he does know what he's talking about as he was vegan in college and knows all about the health benefits as well as compassionate reasons for being vegan, and this guy can cook! If not for the Gumbo poem on page 92 about sea creatures in a meal "... a mound of sea creatures, a crab leg reached over the lip ...", I'd have given this book 5 stars. I just thought it was an inappropriate poem for a vegan cookbook. You wouldn't throw in a poem about pork in a Muslim or Jewish cookbook now, would you ? Vegans and vegetarians, don't let that poem stop you from buying this book though. It's still a great cookbook for anyone who loves soul food, or anyone like me who now calls the south their home.

Big Vegan: More than 350 Recipes, No Meat/No Dairy All Delicious Review

After purchasing this over a week ago, this book is really capturing my heart. It relies on whole food ingredients, does use some of the more unusual ingredients without going overboard, so I feel like I'm stretching myself without being overwhelmed. Most of the recipes also feel simple, though I could imagine they might be overwhelming a touch for a novice cook. This is also a rather large compendium, much like 500 Vegan Recipes or 1000 Vegan Recipes, and it covers a variety of basics, but it doesn't spend too much time or space re-making a lot of the basic vegan dishes there are dozens of recipes for everywhere. Yes, there are some of those the author offer her spin on, but a greater percentage is offering recipes that seem like they should be vegan standbys already.
I've already made a recipe out of each one of the chapters; so far the French lentil soup, blueberry wild rice salad, pistachio tabbouleh with pomegranate, pita bread, and slow cooker farratto have been favorites of mine, and the apple-beet slaw has been a favorite of my husband. I'm looking forward to making Korean tacos with "instant" kim chee for dinner tomorrow.
If you're looking to cut back on oils, many of the recipes I've tried have held up well to reducing the amount of oil called for. If you're gluten free there are quite a few choices available. For a vegan looking to make more than just the newest macaroni and "cheese" dish however, this book offers a lot of new choices to try and while some may require a trip to Whole Foods or a global cuisines grocery, the technique, for the most part, isn't overly fussy for someone with moderate kitchen experience.

I became a vegan four months ago. The transition from eating meat to a vegan diet is difficult to pull off. I managed it initially by shopping for vegan prepared foods at up-scale grocers. I also signed up for a series of vegan cooking classes taught by the author of this book, David Gabbe, through the local community college. I was thrilled with the knowledge I gained in his classes. He taught me how to prepare affordable, simple, tasty, healthful vegan dishes that I really enjoy eating. He has fed these dishes to his family for 30 years, and it shows. This is one of the most PRACTICAL cookbooks I have ever found, vegan or not. David relies on a small set of standard, readily available ingredients that are used over and over again to prepare an astonishing array of delicious and nutritious vegan dishes. The ingredient lists are short, the preparation is simple, and the results are reliable. I highly recommend the tempeh stroganoff, the tofu 'egg fried rice', and the cashew 'cheese'. I believe that it was truly "providential" that I found David, his cooking classes, and his wonderful cookbook so early in my vegan career. I might not have succeeded without him!!! Thank you, David!

Since I have Type 2 diabetes and have successfully reversed it by switching first to a lowfat vegetarian diet, and then to a lowfat vegan diet (with even better results), I was thrilled to find a vegan cookbook which highlights my absolute favorite cuisine, the cuisine of India. As I began to read, learn, and cook from the Indian Vegan Kitchen, I realized that I had finally found someone who could explain Indian cooking techniques, ingredients, and recipes in a way that made sense to me as an American. It is clear to me that Madhu Gadia understands the kind of necessary background information and instructions that an ordinary American like me needs in order to transform her own kitchen into a palace of Indian delights. I have made quite a few recipes from the Indian Vegan Kitchen, all with their own distinctive flavors, and all successfully delicious! So far I have made a Kidney Bean dish, Carrots and Turnips, Black-eyed Peas and Potatoes, Zucchini, and Black Gram and Bengal Gram Dahl. I follow her recipes exactly, but have adjusted the ingredients to meet my health needs. Namely, I have reduced the amount of oil and salt. I also reduced the amount of cayenne pepper, since we like spicy, but not really hot food. That said, the recipes themselves have resulted in some very healthy and enjoyable eating at my house, and I can't wait to try the rest of the recipes in this cookbook. Madhu Gadia has included very helpful information on Indian spices, as well as the dals (beans and pulses) used in Indian cooking. She explains the basic techniques of Indian cooking, too. AND she has a website, [...], from which she is able to answer any questions you might have about her recipes or about Indian cooking. Before this cookbook, my husband and I were dependent on Indian restaurants for good Indian cuisine, but now my own house smells as fragrant and enticing as an Indian restaurant! But I enjoy it even more than a restaurant, because I know that all the recipes are vegan. I have already recommended this cookbook to many of my friends, and would recommend it to anyone who loves Indian cooking. I look forward to trying her New Indian Home Cooking cookbook as well. Thank you, Madhia! This is a dream come true for me.

Bryanna's Italian cookbook "Nonna's Italian Kitchen" must be the very finest ever example of vegan cookbook published to this date. And now she's done it again - with this wonderful vegan cookbook on Chinese cuisine, taking you all the way through dumplings, dim sum, noodles, soups, stir-fries, ... and vegetarian "mock-meats" that were invented thousands of years ago by strict buddhist monks. Whereas it used to be quite a work to rinse out the starch of a flour ball so that only the protein (gluten) was left, the arrival of pure gluten powder makes this a snap to prepare at home. While some recipes are somewhat elaborate which acquire some routine (making dumplings, spring rolls, etc.), there are several quick recipes (stir-fry chapter a.o.) that are very easy to prepare. It is an excellent cookbook if you love chinese foods, and the innovative inclusion of above-mentioned "mock-meats" makes it a cut above the rest. The pages are jam-packed with one tasty recipe after the other - this is a shining example that you do not need to feel deprived when embarking on a vegan diet.

I use this book over and over again, it`s full of great ideas. The ingredients are easily accessible at any time of the year and the salads are easy to make. I have a lot of books on salads, but this one is my true inspiration. This is the baking book I have been waiting for! I own so many vegan books, and I am an avid baker, and this book has great potential to be my new favorite ! I have already bookmarked half the book for 'to try recipes'!! Even my non-vegan friend read through my copy and was oohing and ahhing at every recipe
This has a fantastic variety of recipes: muffins, cookies, bars, cakes, pastries, yeasted breads etc. It even has a section for easy bake ovens for kids!! Too cool. Although I don't own an easy bake oven, I want one now just to try these super cute recipes
To me, this book is a perfect balance of creativity and simplicity. Meaning the recipes are simple to prepare, ingredients are not too wacky at all, yet the recipes are still exciting and they have cute perky names! :D Flavor combinations are definitely interesting
I have already tried 3 recipes after getting the book yesterday! Everything turned out great!
Most recipes are based on soy yogurt (at least the cakey/quick bread recipes).
I really like this book and I plan to try almost everything!! I can't wait!
Only critique is that some pictures here and there would be nice!
