Flax - the Super Food - Book Review The Introduction, provides a helpful background on flax that's easy to understand. The author speaks from his experience, having developed, marketed, and distributed flax products for the health food market as well as studied flax farming and pressing techniques. Covered is the history of flax, from before Christ, to the present, including where flax is raised today. The author gives illustrations of how flax has helped both animals and humans. Flax can be a food and a medicine, both on the inside (in food and as a laxative) as well as on the outside (as poultices for healing wounds and healthy skin). There is a good explanation of the fiber, mucilage, lignans, and oil in flax and their health benefits. There are helpful consumer tips on how to purchase, use, and store flax oil and flax (both the brown and the newer gold varieties of flax.) The author stresses how to buy flax oil in small quantities, in dark containers, and "cold-expeller-pressed" as heating and refining changes the flax oil into unhealthy trans fats. The recipe section, written by two cookbook authors, features a variety of healthy, vegetarian recipes that include not only flax but also soy foods such as tofu and soy milk. Each recipe has a helpful nutritional analysis. To eliminate confusion ,it might help to explain whether a recipe calling for "ground flaxseeds" means to measure the flax before or after grinding. Some other helpful additions to the book might be: o A mini conversion chart of how much whole flax seed equals how much ground flax o A nutritional analysis of flax and flax oil, such as found on a food label, that would include the calories, fat, fiber, protein content, etc o A few more documented human research studies from places such as NCI (National Cancer Institute) to further substantiate the many health benefits of flax. o A bit more discussion by a nutritionist discussing omega 3 and omega 6 fats, including possibly a chart showing the fat composition of flax and flax oil by the percentage of each type of fat. o A list of flax resources (books, web sites) and places to get flax in the US and Canada - such as the Flax Council of Canada.

I bought this book for a friend with cancer and after reading the preface and first chapter just couldn't put it down! Verne Varona writes with an amazing clarity, insight and entertaining style while demystifing all kinds of nutritional myths. His information about acid and alkaline is the best I've read anywhere and his sugar craving information has allowed me to challenge what was a formidable addiction. It seems like he's taken the best of numerous cultural medicines and combined them into a practical and refreshing melting pot approach. Best of all, after five weeks on this program I feel better than I have in 30 years! I have as much kitchen savvy as kangeroo, but his recipes are easy-to-follow and absolutely delicious. Whether you have cancer, concerned about cancer or just in search of good health, this highly motivating book is a must read for anyone wanting to improve or recover their health. That's my take!

Forks Over Knives: The Plant-Based Way to Health Review

The book "Forks Over Knives" does a wonderful job of performing two disparate tasks:
It provides concise explanations of why a whole-foods, plant-based diet is healthiest for people, the planet, and the animals, and
It offers a wide range of amazing recipes to help people get started.
The editor pairs these tasks to perform one goal: to help people live healthier lives through their food choices.
The book does this in three parts: (i) why a plant-based diet is best for your health, the planet, and the animals (37 pages); (ii) basic facts on plant-based foods (19 pages), and (iii) recipes (133 pages). While the bulk of the book is for recipes, there is a lot of powerful information in the first two parts that has appeal for anyone from the newcomer to the most informed, with topics as diverse as the environmental impact of food choices to nutrition labels. Even after having read literally dozens of books on plant-based foods and having finished Campbell's eCornell course in plant-based nutrition, I became more informed after reading the first two parts. The third part is filled with tempting recipes from some of the top plant-based chefs who refuse to compromise on health to sell meals.
The writing style is, for lack of a better word, "comfortable". You can almost imagine yourself having a casual discussion with 11 experts on healthy eating, with insights that would surprise your general practitioner, but with language suitable for the layperson.
My only qualms with the book are with the image quality of the graphs and people, which are technically disappointing, although still discernable, and with the arrangement of the bios, which seems out of order with their contributions.
As a result of the dual tasks, some of the Amazon reviewers were negative. I've summarized them here, along with some counterpoints:
Claim: The educational part of the book was too concise and contained bios
If you are interested only in Dr. Esselstyn's work, try Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure. For more on Campbell's work, turn to The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted And the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, And Long-term Health. For the impact of our food choices on the environment or animals, there are hundreds of books that describe the effects in chilling detail. This book is not the most comprehensive, authoritative guide on any one of those subjects, but it is a very readable and compelling guide on what is arguably the most important topic for most readers: healthy eating. And it holds something for every nutritionist I've ever met, as well as for the overweight Wal-Mart shopper whose cart is filled with chips and soda, or laboratory-manufactured foods from aisle 17. I have yet to find a book that does a better job of balancing the tasks of enlightening readers and facilitating changes in diet.
The book does offer bios on the people who are trying to help us live more healthy lives. At first, I thought that this was a bit too much of a stretch for an already ambitious book...if I read a book on yoga, I'm not necessarily interested in the backgrounds of the leading proponents of yoga. But here I think the bios are justified because they offer a much needed perspective. The bio on T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., explains how he grew up on a dairy farm and was preparing to continue working with animal-based foods, how he discovered that animal protein was a problem rather than a solution to health woes, and then how certain factions in the food industry tried to smear him to stop him from sharing his findings. Dr. Neal Barnard found that the ribs on his cafeteria tray looked and smelled eerily similar to the ribs he had just examined from a human cadaver, which led him to think differently about food. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn tells of how he saved cardiovascular patients who had been told to "go home and prepare for death". I know of dozens of people with cardiovascular problems and one person who was also told to give up hope, so this latter bio may serve as a wakeup call where all else has failed. Collectively, these bios show how the leaders in the field came to the same conclusions from different perspectives, in spite of the traditional food and health industry pressures and tactics.
Claim: The book offered nothing that couldn't be found on the Internet.
I've been a student of plant-based nutrition for 10 years and I've read everything I can on the topic, yet I found pieces here I'd never seen before: Bios that contain insights obviously drawn out from first-hand interviews with the subjects; success stories from people who chose to adopt this healthier approach to eating; a very concise and thoughtful summary which compares whole, plant-based foods to animal products (styled like black box warning labels for food), and some great recipes from leading chefs.
Claim: The book contained no bibliography and few footnotes.
This comment, especially when juxtaposed with the above comment, shows the difficulty in pairing disparate tasks: it's impossible to please everyone. If everything could be found on the Internet, why would someone need a bibliography and dozens of footnotes? Actually, there is a bibliography--called a "bookshelf" on page 199, as well as a list of online references on page 198. There are few footnotes, which will disappoint the purist, but this is a guide, not the definitive source on every topic covered.
Now, a comment on some of the "reviews": A review should summarize the content, offer a critical assessment (e.g., Was it noteworthy? Understandable? Persuasive?), and an argument as to why prospective readers might or might not enjoy the book. Some of the comments for this book are simply mean-spirited attacks on a book that aims to inform, persuade and help those who want to live longer, healthier lives in making better food choices--all for the low price of $6.40, or less than one-tenth the cost of a doctor's visit, where the topic of whole, plant-based foods will likely never come up. Such attacks are to be expected when someone challenges long-held, but unjustifiable beliefs with extensive clinical and epidemiological evidence. Still, more thoughtful reviews would benefit Amazon customers.

There were things I really liked about this book and things I didn't like about it. I am a vegetarian who is striving to move to a totally vegan diet and I really liked the premise of this book. I thought it would really help me make the transition and do it inexpensively.
In a way, it did help me. The first 29 pages of the book are very helpful - packed with info on shopping inexpensively for vegan food. The rest of the book contains a 7 day menu [3 meals per day] and recipes. The author is clear and concise without being preachy. I found her writing easy & enjoyable to read.
But, in another way, I felt kind of ripped off. The first 29 pages were full of info and were great reading, but they weren't worth the price of the book by a long shot. The recipes were OK - some of them are extremely simplistic [like the one for oatmeal: water, oats, salt. Put it in a pot and cook it]. I did not find many recipes that I found appealing - in fact, I doubt I'll try any recipes in the book [other than oatmeal, which I already eat on a regular basis....]. So, it was kind of frustrating - it took me less than 45 minutes [literally] to read this entire book [it is a slim volume, even padded with simple recipes]. I really did not feel I got my money's worth out of the book - I could have done better spending one hour on the internet googling vegan meals and tips.
I also felt that the claim that you can eat vegan for $4 a day was a bit exaggerated.For one thing, the portion sizes she gives are extremely small - for example, on day one you are supposed to eat half a cup of oatmeal for breakfast [and that is it.] For most people, one half a cup of plain oatmeal would not be enough to get them through till lunch. Can you imagine a 180 lb guy trying to get by on that? I can't. The lunches and dinners seemed very slim on serving size too - I think most people would probably end up having to increase what she counts as a full meal just to get enough calories. She does not include calorie counts in her menu plan, but looking at them, I'd guess the menu plans have 1,000-1,200 calories planned per day, which isn't enough for most healthy, active adults. [that is "famine level" caloric intake according to the World Health Organization].
I also felt the prices she said she was getting on the items she includes were awfully low - I am a long time frugal shopper and I have never seen prices as low as the ones she was quoting on some of the products she recommends. I'm a bit skeptical that anyone could really eat what she's recommending for $4 a day. [She also assumes a well stocked pantry in that calculation - such as spices on hand that aren't counted in the cost].
Now, that said, I DO believe that eating the way she recommends is FAR less expensive than eating the average American diet, even if she has exaggerated the inexpensiveness of it. This is still a far superior way of eating - both health wise and financially.
So, I truly felt conflicted by this book - 29 pages of good info and some recipes that were somewhat helpful, but not worth the price of an entire book IMO. I wish there had been MORE to this.
In summary, this book was helpful, but it could have been so much more helpful!

I love this book...It's been such a help after finding out the shocking news that my husband has lymphoma. It uses all the "right foods" nutritionally speaking, to assist with his treatment plan. The food is delicious. So much so that I'm eating healthfully as well. I've found that recipes easy to follow and quick to prepare. It would have been almost impossible for me to figure out how to incorporate soy in our diets in such a tasteful way. I appreciate the book, the tips in it and the peace of mind it's given me in knowing the I'm feeding my loved one the best that I can. Thank you!

What to Eat During Cancer Treatment: 100 Great-Tasting, Family-Friendly Recipes to Help You Cope Review

I am a speech pathologist in an acute rehabilitation hospital and I would greatly recommend this cookbook. I work with patients who have a variety of medical issues, but recently we've seen an increase the number of patients with brain tumors, or with a history of cancer. Because I work with the patient's swallowing safety I often discuss their nutrition and eating habits. I had one patient in particular whose sense of smell and taste had been altered due to their chemo treatment a year prior and he had been losing weight steadily since then. I got in contact with a dietitian with the American Cancer Society who referred me to this book. I bought it immediately because I knew it answered many questions that I had been asked by patients in the past and it also gave such great suggestions for different side effects including decreased taste sensation. I showed this recipe book to that patient and his wife and made a copy of one of the recipes (The Blueberry-Peach Crisp) for them to try. The wife made it and brought it in for the patient the next day. His wife altered it as the book suggested with increased cinnamon and he was able to taste it and enjoyed it. The patient's wife ordered this book that night.

On a more personal note, my father went through chemo and radiation and I have seen first hand how difficult it is for the patient and the caregiver to manage eating and maintaining nutrition while undergoing such a harsh treatment which takes away any natural want/yearn for food. I searched many resources at that time to attempt to help him, but nothing I found was organized in such a useful fashion as this cookbook. This book is organized into sections of suggested recipes for the various side effects that the patient may be experiencing including: nausea, diarrhea, constipation, soar mouth/swallowing deficits, taste alterations and unintentional weight loss. It also gives suggestions for dining out and a list of kitchen staples with a variety of foods to keep in your pantry to help prepare little snacks or full meals depending on the patient's wants.
As you can tell, I can't say enough about this book. It has been a great resource for me professionally and personally (My father now has a copy himself) and I definitely recommend it for people during treatment or for anyone continuing to deal with any of the symptoms after treatment. You will find not only the recipes helpful, but the added nutritional information and recommendations for aiding nutrition during/after treatment are priceless! This cookbook is truly fantastic!

Betty Crocker Living with Cancer Cookbook Review

As a cancer patient, eating well (or even eating at all) is a challenge. I just picked up this book and it's a God-send. It is an excellent cookbook in and of itself; I am a cookbook collector and have over 100 volumes, so it is not easy for any one book to stand out, but this one does. I also have a biology degree and have several nutrition courses under my belt; this book "dishes out" wonderfully tailored recipes that are nutritionally supportive to our needs during this time, but it would also be useful to women in general or even anyone with any chronic disease. Though it focuses on cancer, it splits recipes up and identifies which ones are good for which side effects; fatigue, bowel problems, etc. This would be useful to anyone with any medical issue. The recipes are wonderfully rich and varied so if you want spicy, you can have spicy, if you want comforting, you can have comfort food. There are even many amazing desserts to tempt you despite your symptoms. But this book is so much more.
It has chapters and chapters of supportive stories from other patients/survivors, suggestions/tips, research, and information. I would consider this book an essential tool, even a weapon, in the fight. The recipes are great and the information/support is priceless. Do not hesitate to buy this book for yourself if you are in the fight, or purchasing it as a gift. It is very attractively designed and would make a lovely and useful present. This book is a steal; I would pay $50 for it it is so jam packed with good recipes and useful support and information.
Thank you to the authors, Komen, Betty Crocker and everyone else involved in this project; as a patient, I can finally look forward to eating again now that I have this book! And thank you for the support provided in its pages as well. This is not just a book; it is a gift! Thank you!

I have been fortunate enough not to have had cancer, but this book is terrific for anyone who wants to eat well. The format is great and informative. It is a pleasure to read a cookbook that is accessible. When I read it I feel like I am in the kitchen with the author by my side.The beautiful color photographs will entice you to head to your kitchen.I have made several of the recipes and they are delicious and easy to make. Rebecca Katz's pantry ideas are great! One stop at an organic grocer and your pantry will be stocked with healthful ingredients that you can now use for everything you cook. Using this book is an easy way to make your lifestyle more healthful.
