Fannie in the Kitchen: The Whole Story from Soup to Nuts of How Fannie Farmer Invented Recipes with Precise Measurements Review

I am an educator who likes to use historical fiction with elementary students. Students love the story of FANNIE IN THE KITCHEN, and we have also used the book to talk about how cooking has changed over the years. I bring in old kitchen utensils from antique stores to show them. (Many kids can't identify a sifter, to say nothing of a butter mold! And when was the last time you saw a doughnut cutter??) We also use the book as a jumping off point to talk about math and measurements.
Although this is clearly a humourous, fictionalized take-off on a footnote to history, students and I also enjoy talking about how young Marcia must adjust to change, as her mother has a new baby. The way the illustrator depicts the developing relationship between Marcia and Fannie is delightful.
As the author note states, Fannie Farmer was one of the first to recommend precise measurements in cooking. What a fun way for kids to be introduced to this 19th century figure

Toddler Café: Fast, Healthy, and Fun Ways to Feed Even the Pickiest Eater Review

I turned to this book because my toddler and I were in an eating rut. He has no problem eating healthy, but I needed a few more recipes/combos in my arsenal. This book is loaded with recipes, however, they were a far cry from what I was looking for.
While not along the lines of Deceptively Delicious/Sneaky Chef (there's no denying that the pea pancakes are peas) I felt that too many of the recipes sugared up the veggies and had too many sweet angles in general for my liking. In addition, a good number of these recipes were just not efficient on time and with a toddler and 6.5month old, efficiency is key. And speaking of efficiency, I about lost my bottom jaw when I viewed the ridiculous number of pantry and refrigerator supplies I was required to have "on hand". And then there were a few recipes that were just a little too over the top. While I'm sure the pb&j french toast is quite tasty, I don't need help getting my kid to scarf pb&j down anyway (using natural peanut butter, low sugar jelly on whole wheat bread), why would I french toast it?!
The book looks good and the photos are beautiful, the info is just not good for day to day.

Real Food, Real Fast Review

I am an avid collector of cookbooks and especially love children's cookbooks - meals are usually tasty and easy to prepare. But this book really floored me - written by a teenager for kids his age, how good could it be? Absolutely excellent! It rivals anything Martha Stewart could make and is so much easier!
You'll find an amazing assortment of easy to prepare meals that can be made in 5-30 minutes, all using easy-to-find ingredients.
* 5 minute meals include little plates that can easily pass for hors do'ouvres: bread, olive oil & olives; prosciutto & mozzarella with special dressing; light meals using salmon, avocado and shrimp, with simple but tasty dressings. Fruit, yogurt and assorted toppings that make for simple yet elegant breakfasts. Eight smoothies and shakes using fruit and milk. Plus all seven toppings for toast - from cinnamon sugar butter to tomato and garlic.
* 10 minute meals include sandwiches such as greek salad pita, Portobello arugula and balsamic, French toast with hot fruit, spreads and dips (hummus, guacamole), assorted salads, omelettes.
* 15 minute meals include steak with four variations (pepper, teriyaki, lemon and rosemary, chili mustard), sautéed chicken breasts with different sauces (salsa verde, middle eastern style), grilled fish and sauces, roasted vegetables, noodle dishes, couscous, tabouli, and fruit crepes.
* 20 minute meals include all types of burgers (beef, chicken, pork, vegetarian), an amazingly easy but complex-tasting Bolognese sauce, mashed potatoes with variations, stir fries, granola bars and cookies.
* 30 minute meals include two soups (lentil and tomato, cheese and watercress), pizza (basic, thin crust, deep crust), kebabs (meat, chicken, vegetarian), tex mex meals (homemade tortillas, chicken fajitas, tosatadas, quesadillas), risottos, chicen kiev, salmon fish cakes, cassoulet, cheese soufflés, savory crepes (chicken, ham and cheese, spinach, mushroom, etc), assorted curries, and desserts (molten chocolate cake, fruit crumble, among others).
* Finally, there is a section on "Leftovers" which surprisingly is for making them: recipes for making roast beast, roast chicken and ham roast, for when you have loads of time.
You can't go wrong with this cookbook, if you're looking for a gift for a young beginner cook, a college student living on their own, or for healthy, tasty meals to make for your own kids.

Tasty Bible Stories: A Menu of Tales & Matching Recipes Review

You probably already know cooking with kids makes good family fun, provides children with a life-skill, and helps teach basic math concepts. And now, with Tasty Bible Stories by Tami Lehman-Wilzig, you can add "learning about the Bible" to the list of good things cooking can do for your kids.
In this unique book, an old Testament Bible story is retold in about two pages. A sidebar offers facts about food related to the story, and the following page offers two recipes made with that food.
For example, the first story is that of Adam and Eve. Not surprisingly, the food attached to that story is apples (although the author admits we don't really know what sort of fruit was on the Tree of Knowledge, so she includes another popular biblical fruit: figs). A recipe for baked apple and a recipe for figs and sour cream are included.
For the story of Noah, grape recipes are included (because Noah planted a vineyard after the flood); for the story of angelic visitors to Sarah and Abraham, we have pita pockets and hummus (possible Bible-time breakfast foods); for Jacob and Esau, stew; for Joseph, pasta (because Egyptians invented pasta...who knew?); for baby Moses, an eggplant omelet and fatoosh bread salad (Egyptian foods); for the story of Passover, matzah brie, cold egg soup, and charoset; for the story of manna, tofu (ha!); for the story of the Jews entering Canan, grape juice and carrots (foods of the land); for Sisera, hot milk with cinnamon; for Ruth, barley and onion; for Queen Esther's feast, Persian rice and kebab; and more.
What I Like: This is a fun way to make Bible stories come to life. The author's writing style is fun ("'I have a grape idea!' he [Noah] called out happily one day. 'You mean GREAT idea,' corrected Shem. 'No, I mean GRAPE," insisted Noah. 'I'm going to grow grapes!'") and Katherine Janus Kahn's illustrations are bold and vivid.
What I Dislike: Nothing. But parents should know this book is written for Jewish children; therefore, it includes passages like this: "Each year we retell the story of the exodus from Egypt by reading the Haggadah, and we eat matzah, the original fast food...") Also, don't expect the recipes in this book to be accurate to biblical times; they are simply a way to help make certain Bible stories more memorable.
Overall Rating: Very good.

Diabetes Snacks, Treats, and Easy Eats for Kids: 130 Recipes for the Foods Kids Really Like to Eat Review

I am using this cookbook to give to families that have children with diabetes. I chose this cookbook because the recipes are not long and involved and do not use specialty ingredients. The recipes are short, nutritious and each is followed by nutritional data. It makes it very easy for the children to count their carbs! Great cookbook! Leah M., RN
