Party Like a Culinista: Fresh Recipes, Bold Flavors, and Good Friends Review

Just looking at the cover of Jill Donenfeld and Josetth Gordon's new cookbook, makes me smile. It generates happiness. I am excited and inspired to have a dinner party right now! I have a huge number of cookbooks but none quite like this one. This book is an absolute gem.
Party Like A Culinista has an amazing format. Not only are there menu suggestions, each recipe is designated as "easy", "make ahead", "vegan" or "vegan flex", as well as offering the cooking order. The book even suggests when to change into your party clothes! How fun is that? The photos of the prepared recipes in the book are beautiful and make my mouth water because they look so delicious. The chapters in this book offer suggestions for all different kinds of parties from the casual daytime party to a last minute party, an anytime party or even a big "blow out" more formal party.
I have tried quite a few of the recipes in this book and found them all delicious, unique with a nod towards healthy preparation and ingredients. Though everything has been absolutely excellent some of my favorites are: the Chicken and Apricot Falafel, the Seafood Cobb, the Warm Squash Salad with Faro, Hazelnuts, and Currants, the Arugula and Mozzarella Salad with Eggplant Caponate and the Roasted Vegetable Enchiladas. The Chorizo Red Pepper Polenta Squares are fabulous and a snap to make.
As for ease of use, I think the pictures are really helpful, the directions are very clear with tons of information so that even an inexperienced cook can prepare an impressive, flavorful and healthy meal that will be an enormous hit with his or her guests. The authors offer suggestions for the substitution of hard to find or out of season ingredients. Stated prep/cooking times seem right on, and since many of them require less than an hour, it's pretty easy to pull together a meal quickly. I appreciate that the advance preparation and hold times for the refrigerator and freezer (if applicable) that are given for each recipe. I almost feel as if I am in an expensive cooking class. The introduction includes good information about ingredients, preparation and even equipment. Variations to the recipes are also provided to make them vegan. Finally, I think there are numerous recipes that would appeal to people who like lean proteins with healthy, flavorful sauces, too. If you like lots of flavor, you won't go wrong with this book. It is sure to become one of your favorites.

Secrets of Fat-free Desserts (Secrets of Fat-free Cooking) Review

I know that some fat is good in our diets and I don't advocate eliminating all of it; however I know I personally can eat WAY too much in my desserts. This book has given me tremendous insight into how to reduce and/or cut out the fat in my desserts. The recipes are tasty, moist when they're supposed to be, chewy when they're supposed to be, crisp when they're supposed to be (you get the idea - these are not gooey, nasty fat replacements).I especially like the Prune Puree and have used it in other recipes very successfully. I highly recommend this book as a sensible addition to your healthy living cookbooks.

Teens Cook Dessert Review

Teens Cook Dessert is one of the best cook books out there! I'm a teen myself (16 years old) and have read countless recipes and more cook books than I can count on both hands. This cook book is concise in its instructions, accurate in its baking times and pan sizes, has an amazingly wide range of delicious recipes of various difficulty, and includes helpful tips and fun facts scattered throughout. The one and only thing that I would include in this book is preparation times for the recipes (its rather annoying to begin a pudding and later realize halfway through that its going to take 5 hours to finish...). This book is appropriate for both the beginner and the seasoned kitchen veteran.

Sunset Cooking for Two Review

I bought this book because my old one wore out after 30 years. Not a bad recipe in the book. Not one. If more than two people just adjust accordingly. I changed my review because I reviewed the seller not the book. Must have been on one of my benders, lol!

In the Small Kitchen: 100 Recipes from Our Year of Cooking in the Real World Review

I own hundreds of cookbooks. That sounds worse than it is, considering my age :) I don't really read most, I just search for recipes that sound good and follow them. Some don't include any useable recipes, but are good for sparking ideas. I generally ignore the forward to the book as well as most of the text other than the recipes. I'm sorry, but to me that's all a cookbook needs to be. A resource, or a reference.
My experience with In the Small Kitchen was quite different. The book states this cookbook was written by the creators of Big Girls, Small Kitchen. I had never heard of their blog before, and I purposely avoided it until after reading the book so I'd know if the book could stand alone if you were not already a fan. After reading the book, then exploring their website, I realized that the authors' experience with blogging has turned them into masters of short stories. I can honestly say that I enjoyed reading this book as a book and not just as a cookbook. The book stood very well without prior knowledge of the authors or their website.
Things I enjoyed most about this cookbook:
*The book begins with a list of basic essential equipment. You'll be surprised at how little you really need until you see it explained as well as they did. I'm channeling my inner kitchen minimalist!
*Many of the recipes serve just 2 people. They can be easily doubled or more, but are a great starting point.
*All of the recipes call for easily accessible ingredients, even if the results are far from ordinary
The first recipe I tried from In the Small Kitchen was Swiss Chard Frittata. The recipe serves 2, but it was easy to cut in half and prepare in a small single serving pan. I love Swiss chard, but it never occurred to me to use it in a frittata. The recipe also called for sun-dried tomatoes, another favorite ingredient. Along with the eggs and Parmesan cheese, this turned out to be one of my favorite breakfast recipes. Ever!
The Soy Honey Baked Tofu was also a big hit for myself and friends. It serves 2 to 4 and the leftovers freeze well, though you probably won't have any. I've tried about 8 recipes so far, including the homemade ketchup which I really enjoyed. I've not been disappointed with anything so far.
There are a lot of meat recipes in this cookbook, which I don't do. But there aren't so many that I would turn this cookbook down as a vegetarian.
I feel that this is one of the better cookbooks in my collection. I've also bookmarked their blog and look forward to more fresh ideas from the authors.

Real Food, Real Fast Review

I am an avid collector of cookbooks and especially love children's cookbooks - meals are usually tasty and easy to prepare. But this book really floored me - written by a teenager for kids his age, how good could it be? Absolutely excellent! It rivals anything Martha Stewart could make and is so much easier!
You'll find an amazing assortment of easy to prepare meals that can be made in 5-30 minutes, all using easy-to-find ingredients.
* 5 minute meals include little plates that can easily pass for hors do'ouvres: bread, olive oil & olives; prosciutto & mozzarella with special dressing; light meals using salmon, avocado and shrimp, with simple but tasty dressings. Fruit, yogurt and assorted toppings that make for simple yet elegant breakfasts. Eight smoothies and shakes using fruit and milk. Plus all seven toppings for toast - from cinnamon sugar butter to tomato and garlic.
* 10 minute meals include sandwiches such as greek salad pita, Portobello arugula and balsamic, French toast with hot fruit, spreads and dips (hummus, guacamole), assorted salads, omelettes.
* 15 minute meals include steak with four variations (pepper, teriyaki, lemon and rosemary, chili mustard), sautéed chicken breasts with different sauces (salsa verde, middle eastern style), grilled fish and sauces, roasted vegetables, noodle dishes, couscous, tabouli, and fruit crepes.
* 20 minute meals include all types of burgers (beef, chicken, pork, vegetarian), an amazingly easy but complex-tasting Bolognese sauce, mashed potatoes with variations, stir fries, granola bars and cookies.
* 30 minute meals include two soups (lentil and tomato, cheese and watercress), pizza (basic, thin crust, deep crust), kebabs (meat, chicken, vegetarian), tex mex meals (homemade tortillas, chicken fajitas, tosatadas, quesadillas), risottos, chicen kiev, salmon fish cakes, cassoulet, cheese soufflés, savory crepes (chicken, ham and cheese, spinach, mushroom, etc), assorted curries, and desserts (molten chocolate cake, fruit crumble, among others).
* Finally, there is a section on "Leftovers" which surprisingly is for making them: recipes for making roast beast, roast chicken and ham roast, for when you have loads of time.
You can't go wrong with this cookbook, if you're looking for a gift for a young beginner cook, a college student living on their own, or for healthy, tasty meals to make for your own kids.

French Classics Made Easy: More Than 250 Great French Recipes Updated and Simplified for the American Kitchen Review

I believe I have been a secret Francophile for a lot of my adult life as a cook - at least when it comes to French cuisine and culture. Despite my Central Euro roots, and my passion for many other cuisines of the world, I have cooked many of the French classics that Richard Grausman, the author of "French Classics Made Easy" includes in this 'keeper' of a book. The best known classics such as Coq au Vin, Bouillabaisse, Boeuf Bourguignon, Cassoulet, Navarin D'Agneau to name a few of my favorites, are all included in this treasure of a book.
Actually, there are 250 French recipes that Grausman delivers to the home cook using ingredients readily available at your local supermarket. Add to that, the illustrated step-by-step techniques (for example, "How to Line a Tart Pan" as illustrated and described on page 65) and others throughout the book all add to the excellence of this cookbook.
The extent of Grausman's attention to detail in writing this book is to be commended. For ease of recognition to his audience, the recipe titles are in English, followed by the French translation. In addition, a personal favorite feature of any cook book is that the Table of Contents be comprehensive enough to include the page number where the reader can find not only where a particular Chapter can be found, but what page to find a particular category within a Chapter. That may seem like a "nit-picking" feature for me to get excited about, but trust me, when you've read, judged, and used as many cook books as I have in my professional culinary life, that feature is very useful to the reader!
The Chapters
First Courses (Page 14):
Main Courses (Page 86)
Vegetables & Other Accompaniments (Page 170)
Pastries & Desserts (Page 210) (Pastries Page 212 and Desserts Page 260)
Basics (Page 300)

The mystique behind French cuisine was attempted to be de-mystified by Julia Child decades ago through her TV shows and many cookbooks. However, as much as I admire all that she did to introduce the American palate to French cuisine (not an easy task to take folks from the ordinary and sometimes mundane "American" cuisine to Coq au Vin!) I believe that there were many home cooks who were still intimidated by some of the lengthy and complicated steps and some ingredients that may have been difficult to come by decades ago when Julia Child was in her heyday. Do you remember when the only mushrooms you could buy were those that came in a can? I do!
What Richard Grausman has done in writing French Classics Made Easy is to do just that!
