The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw Review

I've got 3 other raw food books. I like this one the best. Not alot of hype. I appreciate that. It is written for idiots...begins by explaining the benefits of going raw. I'd been raw for a month prior to reading this book, but the motivation to continue was good.
Step by step instructions for soaking and sprouting methods (easy to follow chart included). I was too timid to attempt this process til I read this book. Way easy. My kitchen is sproutin' right now.

Recipes with easy to find ingredients is important. I've got to prepare food for 5 s.a.d. enthusiasts so I don't have alot of time or cash to fool around with. This book's got the recipes I can use. The live oatmeal recipe was easy to prepare and delish! It touches a couple of times on this or that being gluten free, which is vital for me. It clued me into nama shoyu...major gluten goin' on. Thanks, it sucks to have a recipe picked out and find out at the grocery store while reading a label that I can't have that specific thing. So, I run around putting the other ingredients back on the shelf coz that recipe's a wash! Another thing, Idiot's Guide tells you exactly what needs to be soaked for any given recipe. I ruined a recipe from another book because it didn't tell me to soak $12.00 worth of almonds. I had to go on you tube to watch other people explain it before one of them finally mentioned that they needed to be soaked. I was bummed. This book helps me not screw things up.

Idiot's Guide has great insider tips on kitchen appliances...wish I'd have read this before I bought my dehydrator, blender, food processor, and juicer. The dehydrator to buy is the Excalibur. The hours it saves in dehydrating time due to its design is crazy! Now I'm bummed with my cheapy Walmart one. There are alot of chip, cracker, and bread recipes I can't make very well without the good dehydrator. The recipes are found in other books not just this one, so it's not a negative against this book. The dehydrating chart is helpful, as well. I like how Idiot's Guide explains why you have increased temps at the beginning of some dehydrations and not others, and why it is still considered raw at these temps. Also, a Champion brand juicer is the one recommended by all raw foodists I've read from. This book explains very simply the differences in how they work and therefore why Champion is the brand recommended.

Basically, the book imparts alot of knowledge, little tips and info on nutition without being too sciencey. It defines some of the raw foodist lexicon. It's like having a friend explain lots of little facts as well as some biggies, in a fun to read manner. I'd buy it again if I didn't already own it!

Dr. Khalsa's Natural Dog: A Holistic Guide for Healthier Dogs Review

This is the most comprehensive, informative, compassionately written and spiritually insightful book on dog health that I have ever read. Over the course of many years as a dog owner, I have read dozens of books on different aspects of canine health and well-being. I dub this book the 'holistic bible' for dog owners because it contains everything I have been looking for, all in one book:
it sets forth specific recipes that maximize nutritional value for dogs;
it provides logical, straightforward explanations and recommendations for holistic remedies and common health issues;
it provides accurate, easily accessible information regarding the sources for purchasing the appropriate vitamins, supplements and remedies; and,
it addresses the most painful of health challenges for dogs, along with fundamental advice as to how to either prevent or treat those concerns.
This is the first book regarding dog 'health' that I have found so lovely to read that I haven't wanted to put it down. Dr. Khalsa's overall style is erudite, elegant and delightful. Her writing is both eloquent and friendly, making this book a pure pleasure to read.
I wish I had this book in my hands before I began my years of nurturing my canine companions. I highly recommend it to every dog owner and potential dog owner, and believe it should be the core of any dog owner's library regarding dog health and well-being. No dog owner should be without this book.

The Healing Cuisine: India's Art of Ayurvedic Cooking (Healing Arts Press) Review

I could write a very long and thorough critique of this book, but i won't. i just want to make a few points. First & foremost is that this is the only book of its kind (that i'm aware of); that is, it's a vegetarian indian cookbook based directly on ayurvedic science, with a complete introduction to ayurvedic theory & application... and it's vegan-friendly... (there's a small section of the recipes devoted to paneer cottage cheese and yogurt, and some of the other main recipes call for yogurt or cream, but these are few comparatively, and of course soy could be substituted).... As an introductory guide to ayurveda, it is pretty good (the organization isn't the best, compared to "Ayurveda" by Dr. Vasant Lad, which is the *only* definitive modern introductory guide to ayurveda that is clear, concise, thorough, complete with practical application).... Johari covers food and spice qualities and combinations and how to apply all of this to best suit your constitution... this is really good stuff & easy to grasp... his recipes are *superb* & come from his intuition.... (keeping it short): my only "complaint" is that there is no verbage to go along with the recipes; that is, which constitution the recipe is best for; what it will aggrevate or subdue; how the individual spices & veggies are working together in the recipe... example: at the beginning of the recipes, i'd like to see something like "This will subdue vata & kapha & aggrevate pitta; such & such spice prevents gas formation; such & such spices are digestive tonics; tonic for such & such conditions; good winter dish"..... In sum, vegetarian indian cookbooks are indeed rare (why is this?).... this is the *BEST* i've ever come across.... ("Classic Indian Vegatarian & Grain Cooking" is not all that great)

Ayurvedic Cooking for Self Healing Review

This Ayurvedic cookbook is well suited for the beginner as well as an experienced cook. There is an introduction to Ayurveda and dosha specific eating presented in the beginning of the book. This will help you receive full benefit of the receipies and suggestions given. However if you do not care about Ayurveda the book still provides you with some of the most interesting and tasy Indian receipies (of course all vegetarian) I have had. Mrs. Lad's easy to follow instructions and down to earth approach to Indian cooking makes for an easy and succesful outcome of the cooking adventure. Great book, definitely a must in any Indian-food lover's collection.
