Local Bounty: Vegan Seasonal Recipes Review

If you are seeking a complete cookbook to cooking vegan, then you may want to add another to your collection, but if you are seeking easy yet imaginative recipes that will help you add more seasonal produce to your diet, then you have hit the mark.
The author begins with a good primer, which includes an introduction to the various vegetable "families," solid explanations of various cooking techniques (at last, I understand braising!), and a quick chart on basic seasonings to use (combinations of spices, herbs, and basic pantry items) to create certain ethnic flavors. The latter may have been brief, but I had never seen this in a cookbook prior, and plan to reference it in the future.
The chapters/sections are of course broken down by season, each with a brief one-page intro that lists out the correlating in-season items. Always a useful thing to have on hand! The recipes are refreshingly simple: not too many ingredients, brief yet thorough instructions, just one recipe per page with room for notes, and good sized print for those of us who are visually impaired.
Keep in mind; this cookbook is really about vegetables and fruits, so it isn't filled with grain and pasta dishes, tofu, or meat substitutes. As someone who cares more about adding more of the green and fibrous stuff to my daily regimen than following a particular diet (beyond dairy-free of course!), this was a refreshing change from your average vegan or vegetarian cookbook. I also liked that just a handful of recipes used soy.
Local Bounty has soups, sauces, salads, and hearty "sides" aplenty. For an extra treat, there are some sweet recipes that randomly appear as bonuses throughout the book. Those who think that vegan desserts should use fruit, unrefined sweeteners, and whole grain flours for a slightly healthier reward, will be doubly pleased.
Really, I was about to start dog-earing the pages for recipes to trial, but I would make less of a mess dog-earing the pages I don't want to make! This is definitely a go to book for when I have gone out on a limb and purchased a "new-to-me" in-season ingredient or an abundance of an old favorite that has been stockpiled from overflowing local farmers, or when I just crave some simple vegetable and fruit dishes ... which is just about every day!

The Gluten-Free Asian Kitchen: Recipes for Noodles, Dumplings, Sauces, and More Review

OMG. This cookbook is so well done. Thank you so much Laura Russell! I haven't had a dumpling in 18 months since going gluten free. We are now devouring the Gingery Pork Pot Stickers and the Sticky Rice Dumplings with Chicken and Mushrooms.I particularly liked the section "Identifying Sources of Gluten in Common Asian Ingredients." I now know to be careful of several I had no idea might contain gluten. And now, since this cookbook includes several sauce recipes with a great variety of flavors, I can make my own for home use or to take along to my favorite asian joints. Highly recommend. Fantastic.

Super Natural Cooking: Five Delicious Ways to Incorporate Whole and Natural Foods into Your Cooking Review

There are plenty of new products coming out to meet the demand of folks now eager to try the natural food movement, but it's hard to know how to use them well. Amaranth flour, buckwheat flour, brown rice syrup? Simply trying to substitute them into your favorite recipes rarely works--you need to know how to use them to their own best advantage, and that takes time, effort, and plenty of practice to work out.
Luckily, Heidi Swanson decided to start that process for us.
"Super Natural Cooking" is packed with information on how to best store, handle, and use all of the wonderful ingredients you'll find. You'll find out which all-natural sweeteners have a surprisingly low glycemic index, making them appropriate for diabetics and those worried about their blood sugar or carbohydrate intake. You'll learn how much of those exotic flours you can substitute, which recipe-types they work best in, and how to make sure their different characteristics don't cause your recipes to fail.
The recipes from this book more than prove Ms. Swanson's skill in the creative kitchen. One of the surest signs I've found of a brilliant cook over the years is the ability to take a few, often mild ingredients and turn them into something that is more than the sum of its parts--a wholly new and complex flavor. This she does easily with such recipes as a luscious fig spread that includes a bit of honey, lemon juice and black pepper. Then there's a curry noodle pot that yields new tastes in every delicious bite. I feared the seed-topped amaranth biscuits would be unduly heavy after feeling the texture of the dough, but they came out tender and wonderful, with an elusively delicious flavor I can only attribute to the amaranth flour. Each recipe came out perfectly without any alteration on our part; the directions were simple, clear, and without error.
The book even makes a beautiful gift, as it's filled with Ms. Swanson's own food photography--and believe me, these photographs will make you hungry!

The Organic Food Shopper's Guide Review

I love this book. I took it out of my library and am about to purchase it from Amazon. The book not only talks about the organic advantages of most foods (veggies, fruit, dairy, meat, nuts etc.) but also lists nutritional benefits, what pairs well with the food, recipes (the few I have tried have been easy to prepare, wholesom and delicious.)and a great resource list. Wonderful book.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw Review

I've got 3 other raw food books. I like this one the best. Not alot of hype. I appreciate that. It is written for idiots...begins by explaining the benefits of going raw. I'd been raw for a month prior to reading this book, but the motivation to continue was good.
Step by step instructions for soaking and sprouting methods (easy to follow chart included). I was too timid to attempt this process til I read this book. Way easy. My kitchen is sproutin' right now.

Recipes with easy to find ingredients is important. I've got to prepare food for 5 s.a.d. enthusiasts so I don't have alot of time or cash to fool around with. This book's got the recipes I can use. The live oatmeal recipe was easy to prepare and delish! It touches a couple of times on this or that being gluten free, which is vital for me. It clued me into nama shoyu...major gluten goin' on. Thanks, it sucks to have a recipe picked out and find out at the grocery store while reading a label that I can't have that specific thing. So, I run around putting the other ingredients back on the shelf coz that recipe's a wash! Another thing, Idiot's Guide tells you exactly what needs to be soaked for any given recipe. I ruined a recipe from another book because it didn't tell me to soak $12.00 worth of almonds. I had to go on you tube to watch other people explain it before one of them finally mentioned that they needed to be soaked. I was bummed. This book helps me not screw things up.

Idiot's Guide has great insider tips on kitchen appliances...wish I'd have read this before I bought my dehydrator, blender, food processor, and juicer. The dehydrator to buy is the Excalibur. The hours it saves in dehydrating time due to its design is crazy! Now I'm bummed with my cheapy Walmart one. There are alot of chip, cracker, and bread recipes I can't make very well without the good dehydrator. The recipes are found in other books not just this one, so it's not a negative against this book. The dehydrating chart is helpful, as well. I like how Idiot's Guide explains why you have increased temps at the beginning of some dehydrations and not others, and why it is still considered raw at these temps. Also, a Champion brand juicer is the one recommended by all raw foodists I've read from. This book explains very simply the differences in how they work and therefore why Champion is the brand recommended.

Basically, the book imparts alot of knowledge, little tips and info on nutition without being too sciencey. It defines some of the raw foodist lexicon. It's like having a friend explain lots of little facts as well as some biggies, in a fun to read manner. I'd buy it again if I didn't already own it!

Recipes for Natural Beauty: 100 Homemade Treatments for Radiant Beauty Review

The recipes for which I was able to find the ingredients: lotion, nail care cream, exfoliator were absolutely supreme--wonderful for my very dry skin. Some of the recipes call for tintures and flowers which I couldn't find in my local health food store. It would have been helpful if the book had given Internet or mail-order sources for some of the ingredients. Instead, the recipes say to use the ingredient if you can find it--not much help--and they don't say what to do it you can't. But given my sucess with what I have so far I will continue to search out other ingredients.

Feeding the Whole Family: Whole Foods Recipes for Babies, Young Children and Their Parents Review

In the 18 months I have been using this cookbook, it has always given me excellent meals and valuable cooking tips. It is the perfect cookbook for the experienced wholefood cook or for a person, especially a parent, wanting to begin experimenting with the health-sustaining wholefood diet. The author even includes at the bottom of each recipe ways to adapt the food for a 'new eater' so parents don't have to cook separate meals for each member of the family.
Also, particularly helpful is her chapter on healthy lunches, which gives great ideas for packable wholefoods - usually a daunting task in these days of take-out/fastfood. The cooking tips throughout the book and her glossary at the back include extremely helpful and often hard to find information which helps make wholefoods less intimidating and much tastier. This cookbook and Annemarie Colbin's cookbooks (The Natural Gourmet and Book of Wholemeals) are my constant kitchen references

Simple Food for Busy Families: The Whole Life Nutrition Approach Review

I bought this book thinking it would contain RECIPES for families that were interested in the whole foods approach. It does seem to be a very interesting book, but really it is a nutrition book about conversion from the Standard American Diet (SAD) to the whole foods approach. I am re-selling this book because I have already been "converted", I was just looking for some new recipes. It was probably my fault for not reading the description of the book well enough, but I did want other potential buyers to beware.

Cooking with Coconut Flour: A Delicious Low-Carb, Gluten-Free Alternative to Wheat Review

IF you don't have a problem with eggs, this is a great recipe book. I've made several of the muffin recipes and and a few of the loaves as well. I reall like the taste and texture and have recommended the book to several people. Whether the results are high or low carb depends on which recipe you choose, and you do have a choice for many of them of using the stevia-only versions. You don't have to use a recipe with cornmeal or cornstarch; they're in those particular recipes for a reason, but not in all of them. You can choose coconut milk, or any other non-dairy milk. I don't get why some reviewers make things so difficult for themselves. Can they use every recipe in every other cook book they buy? I'm not interested in every recipe in the book, but there are many more I have yet to try, and will. Of those I have made, the ingredients, except for the coconut flour itself, are all readily available.

Big Green Cookbook: Hundreds of Planet-Pleasing Recipes and Tips for a Luscious, Low-Carbon Lifestyle Review

I have been eating local food for quite a while now. But I never had any cookbook other than some vegetarian cookbooks that were close to my way of eating. So when I saw several green-type cookbooks come out recently, it had me curious. The Big Green Cookbook was the one that I ended up picking mostly because it had so many recipes and I wanted a cookbook, not a book book. Luckily this cookbook not only had all the recipes that has already helped me cook more interesting recipes, using ingredients by season that I can find (mostly locally), it had so many tips (not sciency/texty) that were extra helpful. The 27 tips in the front of the book are great. And several I have never thought of before. I love how the tips are laid out with all the recipes too, and leaving it up to everyone to go as green as they want to go with a friendly tone. For me it's pretty green. But also the cookbook works for my boyfriend who wants a little meat from time to time even though I'm still trying to get him to give it up completely. I'm enjoying this cookbook more than expected.

Whole Grains for Busy People: Fast, Flavor-Packed Meals and More for Everyone Review

Lorna Sass has a great track record as a writer of user-friendly, clear cookbooks full of tasty recipes. (Her WHOLE GRAINS EVERY DAY, EVERY WAY won a James Beard Award in 2007).
But most people think you have to slave over the proverbial hot stove to have whole grains in your diet. This book proves on every page that it just ain't so. Quick-cooking whole grains mean that dinner (or breakfast or lunch) can be on the table in a half hour or less. The titles of the dishes are enticing: Quinoa Paella With Chicken and Chorizo, Buckwheat With Cheddar and Pickled Jalapenos, Barley Cioppino, Lemon Poppy Seed Scones.
And if the idea of "healthy eating" strikes you as self-denying, turn to Lorna's recipe for Banana Coconut Pie. Her presentation is crystal-clear; the recipe directions are easy to follow and helpful; the book's layout makes the cooking easier.
If you've only just escaped from the world of white bread and processed foods, a wide-eyed wanderer in the world of whole grains, this cookbook makes it simple to get the best, freshest, and most nourishing products.
Even if you're not a busy person, this book will get satisfying and delicious food on the table in a flash. Now I'm going to stare happily at the photograph of Squash Bisque with Curried Popcorn -- had it for dinner last night!

The Gluten-Free Almond Flour Cookbook Review

This book has a number of good and SIMPLE recipes for gluten-free and low-carb dishes using almond flour. Well worth adding to the shelf; it simplifies and collects a lot of information about almond flour that is widely scattered.
The one big caution is that the author uncritically uses agave nectar for sweetening in almost all the recipes. She says this is because agave nectar is "lower on the glycemic index", but that's not an advantage, that's merely because agave nectar is largely fructose, the most dangerous of the sugars.
From Stephan Guyenet, Ph.D. in neurobiology (blog at [...]
"Agave syrup is made from the heart of the agave plant, which is pressed to release a juice rich in inulin. Inulin is a polymer made of fructose molecules. The inulin is then broken down either by heat or by enzymatic processing. The result is a sweet syrup that is rich in fructose. Agave syrup is marketed as a healthy, alternative sweetener. In fact, it's probably as bad or worse than high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). They are both a refined and processed plant extract. Both are high in fructose, with agave syrup leading HFCS (estimates of agave syrup range up to 92% fructose by calories). Finally, agave syrup is expensive and inefficient to produce. The high fructose content gives agave syrup a low glycemic index, because fructose does not raise blood glucose. Unfortunately, as some diabetics learned the hard way, using fructose as a substitute for sucrose (cane sugar) has negative long-term effects on insulin sensitivity."
I find that these recipes can be adapted by omitting the ill-chosen agave nectar sweetner, in favor of either ordinary sugar (sucrose) or for low-carbs an equivalent combination of Emerald Forest Sugar Erythritol, 1-Pound (Pack of 6) and NuNaturals NuStevia Pure White Stevia Extract, 1 Ounce (Pack of 2), as recommended by Lauren at Healthy Indulgences blog [...]

High Flavor, Low Labor: Reinventing Weeknight Cooking Review

When I have the time (and when would that be?) I think of myself as a pretty descent cook. But truth be told, reading cookbooks usually gives me a feeling of inadequacy rather than the "can do" spirit they're meant to inspire. Not so with HIGH FLAVOR; LOW LABOR. The recipes are easily accomplished, and although there are exciting new ingredients to explore, many of the recipes can be made with what a working Mom tends to have at hand at the dinner hour - no long, pre-planned grocery lists required. And if I don't have everything, J.M. can be depended upon to suggest alternatives. If his go-to ingredients aren't already a part of your world it's easy to make them so, and while most of us understand the importance of fresh herbs and such yet fail to have them handy (what?! grocery shop more then once a week?), many of his pantry suggestions are relatively long lasting. If you just want a book to give you the quick step by step directions to get supper on the table without too much mental aggravation, this one is for you. But you can get much more out of it too. You'll get enough of technique and ideas to apply them on your own. Whatever your style in the kitchen, this is a great book to have at the ready, every night of the week.

Get It Ripe: A Fresh Take on Vegan Cooking and Living Review

"Get it Ripe" is a unique vegan recipe book that also includes comprehensive and accurate information on food.
The first 100 pages of the book offer truly useful and understandable information. Jae's friendly dialect is warm, supportive, and non-judgemental. Most of the other nutrition books I've read have been aggressively coercive (and are either frustratingly vague or overwhelmingly specific and technical). "Get it Ripe" is uniquely easy to read and understand.
By the time you finish reading the first part of the book, you'll have a solid understanding of the effects different foods have on the human body. The next 20 or so pages discuss appropriate kitchen appliances and pantry necessities. The next 10-ish pages address the preparation of grains and legumes, complete with color photos of each type of grain and legume. The next 5 pages offer great information on baking with whole grains, including a list of alternate flours (brown rice flour, etc.) and their nutritional and baking benefits.
And then, the recipes! This section is a good 140 pages, divided into Drinks (11 recipes)
Breakfasts (15 recipes)
Muffins/Biscuits/Quickbreads (12 recipes)
Dips and Spreads (8 recipes)
Salads and Dressings (13 recipes)
Sauces/Gravies/Marinades (10 recipes)
Soups (15 recipes)
Main Dish Bowls/Additional Entrees (18 recipes)
Cakes/Pies/Crumbles (14 recipes)
Cookies/Puddings/Other Sweet Treats (26 recipes)
The full-page color photos are (of course!) mouth-watering. The recipes are oh so easy to follow, and most are incredibly simple (e.g. 10 easy-to-find ingredients, 5 steps). Jae does a wonderful job of creating gourmet flavors with healthful ingredients and minimal preparation. I myself am eager to try the Portobello Burgers with Sunchoke Oven Fries (10 ingredients, 6 steps).
"Get it Ripe" sums up with a few pages on detoxification, and 16 fabulous menu ideas. There's also a comprehensive resource list and index.
"Get it Ripe" is one of the best cookbook/nutrition books I have ever bought! And given the size of my kitchen bookshelf, that's saying a lot! Although I just recently got it, I expect "Get it Ripe" to be one the most used cookbooks in my collection! Thank you Jae!

Food to Live By: The Earthbound Farm Organic Cookbook (Earthbound Farm Organic Cookbk) Review

The beautiful cover of this cookbook caught my eye but the personal story of Earthbound Farms beginnings and the fantastic recipes have held me captive and peaked my enthusiasm for organics and healthy cooking. Since buying this delightful cookbook I feel a bit obsessed with trying recipe after recipe. I was especially happy to see the meat recipes as I have wanted to incorporate more organic meat dishes into my family's diet, especially with 2 teenagers, but felt I lacked experience in buying and preparing meat. What a hit they have been with my family and unexpected surprise in this cookbook. The Sizzling Steak with Olive Sauce had everyone applauding mom's new found culinary skills and the Merlot Braised Shortribs elevated my status to "chef Mom".
In addition to expanding my repertoire of meals this cookbook has given me healthier versions of some family favorites. The Maple Walnut Muffins thrilled me with the small amount of sugar and no butter! Using a 1/4 cup of heart healthy canola oil instead of the 2 sticks of butter I was using in The Barefoot Contessa's Banana Crunch Muffins showed me how easy to eliminate fat and not sacrifice taste. My kids adored them as well as all 30 of the recipes I have tried to date.
This is a cookbook I highly recommend and bought for many family and friends. Its interesting tips and facts as well as beautiful, inspiring photos have made cooking 24/7 for my family a delight and pleasure.

Wildly Affordable Organic: Eat Fabulous Food, Get Healthy, and Save the Planet--All on $5 a Day or Less Review

I live in the same city as the author, and have followed her work ever since she was featured in the local paper. Previously she had e-books which covered much of this same material. However, I was excited to see she was finally publishing. Reading about how the project evolved was fun -- it was not easy at first but she figured it all out and passes it on to us. She lists what brands to buy, and how to organize your cooking to minimize time in the kitchen.
If you are a vegetarian who likes beans, this is a great book. She has adaptations for vegans. If you want to learn to make no knead bread, this is a great book. My husband liked it the first time I made it and he is a meat eating man who has never liked my bread before. Even I did not like my bread before.
The book is hugely practical, and rest assured, you really can do it for $5/per day/per person. The author regularly shops the local stores to see what the current pricing is. You can do it for less if you go non organic.
In posts on her web site, Linda talks about buying all the equipment needed for cooking (basics: pans, knives, etc) for less than $100. I would like to see Amazon package the collection plus the book for persons starting out in their first home. Page 55 lists the essentials.

Chefs on the Farm: Recipes and Inspiration from the Quillisascut Farm School of the Domestic Arts Review

"Chefs on the Farm" is part cookbook, part treatise on eating locally. It focuses on Quillisascut Farm, a small, family-run business in northeastern Washington state. Richly illustrated with numerous color photographs, the book is organized by the seasons -- winter, spring, summer, fall. For each season there are several recipes featuring local foods available at that time of year along with discussion of life on the farm during that season and other aspects of the connection between farm and table. The book also includes profiles of farmers and chefs who participate in the local foods movement.
In line with the focus on eating locally and more sustainably, several of the recipes highlight less commonly know vegetables, such as heirloom varieties of beans and potatoes, and cuts of meat. One that particularly caught my eye was a recipe for oxtail and parsnip lasagna, but there are also recipes for more traditional fare such as apricot preserves. A couple of the recipes made me want to rush into the kitchen to cook, specifically coffee toffee bread pudding with cajeta sauce (a caramel sauce made with goat's milk) and cardamom-apple stuffed French toast with cider syrup.
Overall, I found "Chefs on the Farm" to be an inspirational and enjoyable window into the local food movement. Though not really a how-to book for a newcomer to eating more sustainably, the book does include a few helpful tips for book for finding local food.
