Quick & Easy Thai: 70 Everyday Recipes Review

I love cookbooks and cooking. When my husband and I decided to get on an Asian kick, we chose this book because it eases you into Thai cooking. With no outrageous ingredients, octopus or black squid ink, this cookbook offers the lover of this type of cuisine an easy and very delicious alternative to some of the more authentic recipes offered in other cookbooks. By authentic I mean the strange ingredients. The Chiang Mai Curry Noodles is excellent and depeding on which curry you try, panaeng or red curry, can be hot and spicy, delicious. The Paht Thai Noodles were made in our household two nights in a row they were so good. The chicken coconut soup is a very refreshing dish and the Green Curry Chicken with Zucchini and Jasmine Rice was something even my three year old enjoyed.
In the beginning there is a small investment to be made in ingredients the average American does not have in their pantry. There is a fish sauce,(which is used in practically every asian recipe and in this book), soy sauce, and sri rachaa which is an Asian hot sauce and various curries and a couple other spices. But, once this book hits your life they will be as common and familiar to you as ketchup or mustard. Excellent pictures for those, like myself, who love pictures. If you are considering this book, go ahead without further reservation.

Sundays at Moosewood Restaurant: Ethnic and Regional Recipes from the Cooks at the Legendary Restaurant (Cookery) Review

so what the heck am I doing with a vegetarian cookbook?!?? Well, I was given the book and some suggestions -- Sopa de Lima (from the Mexico section) and Saffron Butterflies. But it's a veggie cookbook, so it just sat on my shelf -- until I had dinner with the person who gave it to me. It wasn't until AFTER dinner, she told me it was recipes from this book -- the meal was so good, I didn't even notice it was meatless.
So, I tried them, and now I'm HOOKED! Sopa de Lima is great food for during halftime of basketball and football games -- and I later found out I can make it fast and easy with some simple substitutions (hint: use a jar of salsa instead of a bunch of other ingredients). Saffron Butterflies is SMOOOOOOOTH and good -- with or without some meatballs thrown in. These two were so good I've had to try others and now "Rumpledethumps" (silly name, but GREAT DISH) is a personal favorite -- I just use it as a side dish along with a London Broil. Okay, so I'm a carnivore -- these recipes are great standing alone, and most of them work well with meat added or on the side.
More than just the great recipes, this book is great for the stories, too. I never would have thought cookbooks make good reading, even when I'm not cooking, but this one is.

Madhur Jaffrey's Quick & Easy Indian Cooking Review

I've been eating Indian food for over 30 years and cooking it for over 20. I can't believe the few negative comments about this book. You do NOT need a pressure cooker. You will very soon be making food better than any Indian Restaurant in the US. I have made about 15 of the recipes without a single dud and four of them are now absolute regulars at our house. It is FAR better than all the other books with fancier photos or millions of recipes.

Madhur Jaffrey's World-of-the-East Vegetarian Cooking Review

I first flipped through this book when I was a teenager almost 18 years ago. I have to admit I was a little put off my the ingredients and techniques that were all so new to me. Years later I gave it another look through. Being a vegetarian at the time, I was missing Chinese food and wanted to try making some of my own. I bought this book and that was it for me. Every weekend I found myself exploring Chinatown, Little India, Japanese, Korean and Thai grocery stores. Afterwards I'd run home and whip up some outstanding meals.
Since then, I've collected most of Madhur Jaffrey's books and my kitchen has truly transformed. I fell in love with Asian food, so much so that I packed up my cases and headed over here to Asia.
This is truly an inspirational and indispensable book. Her Chinese dishes are among the best and her Indian ones are far better than any dishes I've ever had at any Indian restaurant. The tomato chutney is out of this world!
This book is a great launching pad if you're a vegetarian and want to learn how to cook. It's a great alternative to the gaseous bean-filled or heavy-handed cheese recipes in other Western veggie cookbooks. It's also a fantastic cookbook if you want to venture into Asian cooking. Give it a go!

Indian Vegetarian Cooking: At Your House (Healthy World Cuisine) Review

My husband and I both love Indian cuisine and have tried many times over the years to cook it, much to our disappointment. We've purchased many Indian cookbooks, but we could never get the recipes to turn out very good. We had almost given up and resigned ourselves to only eating Indian food at restaurants. Then I found this book. It came recommended to me by some Indian friends who said it was easy, authentic & they enjoyed most of the recipes. So far, every recipe we've tried has been great. I am getting results as good or better than restaurant fare for the first time in years! And the recipe presentation is so easy, I'm even trying to make some of the recipes that I used to think would be too hard, like some of the stuffed breads. I have a lot of cookbooks, but I find myself making recipes out of this one all the time. There are also plenty of quick recipes, so even if you've had a long day, you can still have great Indian meal in a half an hour. If you like Indian food, you won't be disappointed with this book.

The Healthy Cuisine of India: Recipes from the Bengal Region Review

The Healthy Cuisine of India is a GREAT cookbook. I LOVE the recipes in this book. This is my first and only Indian cookbook so I can't really compare it to other Indian cookbooks. But I do know that I enjoy the food from these recipes even more than eating out at Indian restaurants. The author gives lots of details explaining the different types of spices and how to prepare them. There is also some discussion of the lore associated with the various recipes. And the food tastes GREAT. Highly recommended.
