The 15-Minute Gourmet: Vegetarian Review

I have a VAST collection of vegetarian cookbooks. Recent changes in my lifestyle and schedule mandated that I learn to cook faster meals, so I ordered several books promising fast meals. This one delivers. While some of the recipes take a bit longer than 15 mintues, few take more than 30, and much of that time is cooking time, not preparation. Most of the ingredients are common, and a few, such as tahini and miso are less common, but not rare.15 Minute Gourmet: Vegetarian is divided into food groups such as soups, sauces, entrees, desserts, and appetizers. She includes some "basics" on nutrition and good health, as well as suggestions for balancing a healthy vegetarian diet. There are several complete menu suggetions and many recipes include a suggestion for a recipe that would make a good companion. There are even good ideas for setting up an organized kitchen to save MORE time. These are not Standard Amercian Diet foods made faster. These are very nutritious recipes with some ethnic diversity. Quite impressive for a collection that all can be assembled in moments, and many are even low in fat. For those who are curious, some recipes include...quick tomato sauces, pesto, orange-tahini sauce, cheesy vegetable spread, peanut dip, asian stew, quick pea soup, moroccan chickpea soup, fresh croutons, strawberry and blueberry soups, peach vinaigrette (and many others), thai cucumber salad, pasta with herbed ricotta and pine nuts, sweet and sour tofu, vegetable curry, nut burgers, vanilla poached pears, and chocolate dipped pineapple with raspberry sauce. In addition to all of these wonderful features, the layout is simple to read, directions are numbered and divided by steps (less confusing) and there are quite a number of full-page color photographs of the recipes.I highly recommend this book to those who are afraid that "quick" vegetarian food also has to mean "bland".Paulette, I commend you.

15-Minute Vegetarian Recipes: 200 Quick, Easy, and Delicious Recipes the Whole Family Will Love Review

This is the best vegetarian cookbook I've ever used. Every dish I have made from this volume has been delicious, easy, and quick. While some of the recipes take a little planning ahead (ie, calling for cooked rice) the majority really do whip up in no time, and the combinations are creative, tasty and generally quite healthy. I find that with most cookbooks, I make a few recipes, and then lose interest because they are hit or miss. I've worked my way through at least half of the recipes in this book and always turn back to it. I would most highly recommend this cookbook for anyone who is low on time, but still wants interesting, delicious meals!

Dr Gillian McKeith's You Are What You Eat Cookbook: Over 150 Healthy and Delicious Recipes Review

I purchased this cook book and have been trying new recipes every week. I thought I would hate some of the recipes , like fennel, Hazelnut soup, but I loved it. I have been pleasently surprised by most of the recipes. I have substituted some items in the recipes, and they still taste very good. Ms. McKeith states in the cookbook that you have the option of adding or taking ingredients away from the recipes to suit your taste.
When you make the recipes, especially the soups, they yield a very large portion. I Make two or three soups a week, freeze them in containers and take them to work with me. I find I do not waste as much if I freeze everthing in portion size containers.
If you purchase this cookbook, a blender is necessary and a food processor is even better. The recipes are easy, but everything is made with fresh vegetables and there is A LOT of peeling and chopping..(another reason I cook on the weekends and freeze everything)
If you are American, the cookbook lists all ingrediants in grams and liters, I printed a conversion chart on the internet, so I know how many ounces are in an item. The oven temperatures are listed in celsius, but you can also print a conversion list to Farenheit. Last but not least, The British call eggplants an aubergine and a zucchine a courgette. You may have to do a search on the name of a food if it is unfamiliar to you, I laughed pretty hard when I did a search for courgettes and Zucchini was listed.
This cookbook is my refernce now, I have learned to combine foods I would never dream of combining and since I began eating her recipes at most of my meals (Not all! I still love steak once in a while) I can honestly say I feel better than I have in years... The main reason I will continue preparing her recipes is because of the huge impact it has made to my health and well being.

The Meat Lover's Meatless Cookbook: Vegetarian Recipes Carnivores Will Devour Review

I know ... you like meat. Me too. I grew up thinking beef is what's for dinner... and lunch and breakfast. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Or at least there wasn't. Now, I can't help but know better. Sure, there's the health reason in a physical (weight) sense. But I know now there are also environmental impacts, serious issues with how the meat is processed (from sanitary conditions to inhumane kills to worker abuses). But change is hard and meat is yummy, and going meatless means giving up something I love and that raised the right way can still be good for you. So I just refuse to do that. I don't hate vegetables; I just love meat. (Even Whoville would revolt if The Grinch carved roast beets instead of roast beast.) And those vegetarian books? They just DO NOT understand this. They are meatless on a mission -- perhaps delicious but not relatable to a guy who believes bacon just may be nature's candy. Kim O'Donnel asks us meat eaters to try something different: A break from meat once a week. And she has created an AMAZING set of tasty recipes that are good for our bodies and the planet too. I saw an early version of this book and now have the actual copy and to date and I can give the ultimate rave to the Falafel "Burgers," Slurpy Asian Noodle, and Pepita Crusted Tofu Cutlets: My family (all meat eaters) had them for dinner and we not only loved them and wanted them again -- we did NOT sneak a ham sandwich later because we were unfulfilled. Thanks Kim O'Donnel! THIS is change we meat eaters can believe in.

Quick & Easy Vegetarian Cookbook Review

in this case, the fact this book is old really only impacts the fact you can buy it used extremely cheap. this is my favorite cookbook. it's nice to have huge hardcover gourmet glossy picture books, but after buying one, it just sits around because all the recipes are very unhealthy and not to mention i cant find half the ingredients.
this cookbook, however without pictures or glossy pages, has honest commentary on the recipes, they're easy to make, easy to find the ingredients, and it's very easy to navigate.
and i got my copy for 83 cents! cant beat it. it'll cost you more to ship it to you then it will to buy it. highly reccomended for the practical vegetarian.

175 Hot & Spicy Vegetarian Recipes Review

This is my favorite vegetarian cookbook by far, and I own about 20 different ones. So far, every single dish was wonderfully tasty, the measurements were correct, and the instructions were clear and easy to follow.
The thing I like most about this book is, that the dishes are not just your usual pasta with vegies, or a collection of salads and soups, that you can find in your usual boring vegetarian cookbooks. This book has truly unique recipes inspired from all around the world, some spicy, some hot, all of them with interesting and new flavors.
I am a vegetarian for 16 years now, but this book brought new fun and spice into my kitchen.
The only thing that I probably should mention is, although the title suggests that you burn your tongue with every dish, that is not the case (although no one prohibits you from using a little extra pepper when wanted). All dishes are well spiced and seasoned, but only a few are burning hot spicy, so you don't have to be scared of these recipes if you usually don't eat spicy.

The Everything Vegetarian Cookbook: 300 Healthy Recipes Everyone Will Enjoy (Everything Series) Review

Even if you never use a single recipe from this book, the amusing commentary blurbs make it worth reading. Jay Weinstein has a great sense of humor which is shown in several little textboxes throughout this cookbook.
By the way, you shouldn't have any problems using recipes from this book. There are many yummy ones to choose from, with clear and easy-to-follow directions, as well as useful information on vegetarianism. I think this is a great book, not just for vegetarians, but for people who have decided to eat healthier by having a few meatless nights, or parents who may be struggiling to find something to cook for their newly vegetarian son or daughter.
Oh, one more plus. This book is NOT filled with exotic expensive items you'll have to raid specialty shops for. You can find most of what you'll need at a regular grocery store.

The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook: Healthful, Healing Recipes for Life Review

I purchased this book anticipating condition specific recipes, however, the coverage of the doshas and the problems caused by imbalance is superficial at best. The recipes provide a tasty introduction to mostly Indian style vegetarian food. Many are labor intensive and quite heavy on the carbs and a number involve frying. A few require exotic ingredients that may not be easily accessible outside of urban areas. No nutritional information is provided.
The book is readable and the author has a pleasant, conversational style. The recipes I've tried have all been satisfactory, including the vegetable dishes, dals, pickles, lassis and rice puddings. The book is not limited to Indian cooking-there are also recipes for a fat free muesli, gazpacho and a refreshing fruit soup. There are suggested menus that are a bit starchy for my tastes and a cleansing/fasting program. Cursory chapters on yoga and aromatherapy are presented but without real depth. There is nothing on herbal supplementation and skimpy instructions on implementing the cleansing program. If your primary focus is on healing, you would be better served by offerings by Letha Haddady or Barbara Proust. If you are looking for tasty ways to include more vegetables in your diet, you will be satisfied by this book.

Vegetarian Times Low-Fat & Fast: 150 Easy Meatless Recipes Review

This is an excellent cookbook for fast, low-fat vegetarian recipes. All of the recipes contain clear instructions and nutritional information per serving. Per serving, no recipe in the book is more than 10 grams of fat. Some of the recipes we have tried are: Quick Bean-and-Rice Burritos, Southwestern Vegetable Burritos, Fresh Noodles Lo Mein, Chinese Vegetables in Peanut Sauce, Sloppy Joes, Smoky White Bean Soup, Caramelized Onion and Fresh Vegetable Pizza, and Sesame Broccoli. All have been delicious. If you are looking for a quick, delicious, and basic vegetarian cookbook this book is for you. I would also recommend the other books in the Vegetarian Times Low-Fat & Fast series as well as 1001 Low-Fat Recipes by Sue Spitler. You won't be disappointed.

The Vegetarian Meat and Potatoes Cookbook (Non) Review

As a meat eater and lover, I enjoy using this cookbook to prepare meals without meat about once or twice a week. Its clever use of the word "meat" in its title grabbed my attention in the bookstore, and its 275 recipes promises a wide variety of experimentation in the kitchen. Roberston uses a lot of tofu and eggplant as substitutes to meat. Prior to reading this book, I ate eggplant about twice a year, always breaded, fried, and fattening. You had to cover my fried eggplant in Louisiana hot sauce to make it edible. As for tofu, I ate it occasionally, sliced, fried and boring, and usually found it rather tasteless and rubbery. Robertson has rescued me from both of these self-inflicted culinary disasters.
The derivation of Robertson's recipes are Asian, Chinese, French, Latin, and what is now becoming known as "New American." She uses ginger, garlic, and sot sauce as the base for many recipes, and teaches you how to cleverly turn mushrooms, green beans, and eggplant into some pretty good meat type dishes. I eat meat because it makes my feel satiated-that is, I enjoy the flavor and texture of meat, and the fat tells my stomach I have eaten. Vegetables can be disappointing in all three of these important aspects of eating. But, I have to honestly say, with Robertson's help, my argument for eating meat is weakened. I'm working against generations of cultural conditioning relevant to my insistence on eating meat, and with Robertson's help, I hope to one day free myself from its shackles. Time and experimenting with Robertson's recipes will tell.
One of the best aspects of this book is the simple ingredients contained in the recipes. I live in bit of a provincial type town, where exotic vegetables and spices are hard to come by. I'm not a chef either, but found the instructions fairly easy to follow. I recommend you add this book to your collection.

Super Natural Every Day: Well-loved Recipes from My Natural Foods Kitchen Review

I bought this book because I follow the food blogs and everyone was raving about it. That love continues here on Amazon, where she's got nothing but 5 star reviews. I like the book, but ...
I don't know who she is trying to reach here. You would expect that most people who follow food blogs and know of her would know some basics about cooking, yet she has some pages devoted to things that quite frankly I find condescending. Recipes for fruit salad, pita chips and egg salad seem a waste of space, not to mention pages devoted to making rice, whipped cream, tea (tea! as in boil water - add tea - steep) and compound butter. The two pages devoted to how to poach an egg are kind of insulting. To me. Not to everyone.
That's my problem with the book. I cook a lot. I follow the food blogs too get inspiration and to get some recipes without having to buy the newest cookbooks. I know basic techniques. I figure other people who follow her blog (the people I imagine she hopes will buy this book) would, too. Or at least they have demonstrated their ability to look things up on the internet - google how to poach an egg if you must.
These basic techniques seem more silly when you consider her fancy-pants ingredients lists. "I shop alongside some of the best chefs in the city ..." If you can't poach an egg or cook rice, are you really using harissa and membrillo?
I bought this book thinking it would be a nice inspiration for summer veggies. But this is a pantry-heavy cookbook. Yes, its vegetarian, but it is what my husband calls "roly-poly vegetarian." Lots of beans and pasta and potatoes. There are at least ten recipes that basically dress up a pound of store-bought pasta or a 15oz can of beans.
There are pretty pictures (though many are of flowers and trees and Heidi - not all the recipes have pictures and no pictures accompany her how-tos). I mean, it's a nice book. But I would recommend Kim Boyce's "Good to the Grain" Good to the Grain: Baking with Whole-Grain Flours if you want to bake with whole grains over the breakfast and sweets portions of this book. And like I said, the rest is pasta and beans and tea and egg salad.
My recommendation - if you aren't looking for link love from Heidi for your own blog, skip this and just visit her web site, where you can get similar recipes and pictures and chit chat - for free.

Madhur Jaffrey's World-of-the-East Vegetarian Cooking Review

I first flipped through this book when I was a teenager almost 18 years ago. I have to admit I was a little put off my the ingredients and techniques that were all so new to me. Years later I gave it another look through. Being a vegetarian at the time, I was missing Chinese food and wanted to try making some of my own. I bought this book and that was it for me. Every weekend I found myself exploring Chinatown, Little India, Japanese, Korean and Thai grocery stores. Afterwards I'd run home and whip up some outstanding meals.
Since then, I've collected most of Madhur Jaffrey's books and my kitchen has truly transformed. I fell in love with Asian food, so much so that I packed up my cases and headed over here to Asia.
This is truly an inspirational and indispensable book. Her Chinese dishes are among the best and her Indian ones are far better than any dishes I've ever had at any Indian restaurant. The tomato chutney is out of this world!
This book is a great launching pad if you're a vegetarian and want to learn how to cook. It's a great alternative to the gaseous bean-filled or heavy-handed cheese recipes in other Western veggie cookbooks. It's also a fantastic cookbook if you want to venture into Asian cooking. Give it a go!

The Vegetarian Cookbook: The Complete Guide to Vegetarian Food and Cooking Review

I got this books recently and I just love everything about it. With a very detailed and informative introduction to vegetarian diet, it beautifully explains much you need to know about vegetables, fruits, dairy, grains, pasta and a brief introduction to proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates and daily portions. Recipes are organized by Breakfast & Brunch; Starters & Snacks; Soups; Salads; Side Dishes; Main Courses; Pasta & Grains; Eggs & Cheese and Desserts.
Recipes are easy to follow, ingredients are readily accessible and the results are very rewarding. It almost feels like magic.
All of this designed and presented artistically with beautiful and very colorful pictures. Simply DELICIOUS!!!
I also recommend "Practical Cookery: Vegetarian," this is the "Holy Grail" in vegetarian cooking and no vegetarian should be without one. The best I've ever experienced. This is a hardcover published by "Parragon Publishing" in England in 2000/2002 and I don't think it was ever published in US.

Get Cooking: 150 Simple Recipes to Get You Started in the Kitchen Review

Get Cooking takes the beginner through all the steps, clearly and briefly, from how to study a recipe to make sure that you have all the ingredients and tools and to understand the whole process of preparing the food to getting it on the table on time.
Each chapter begins with the essential facts about the type of food, the tools and ingredients that you will most often use, and even an assessment when the inexpensive or moderately priced tools and ingredients will suffice and the times when the added expense is worthwhile.
Katzen describes the cuisine as "'Big Tent,' accommodating a broad base of tastes and needs, vegetarian, meat-loving and everything in between." Most of the dishes are familiar - the items that you'd find at a party, picnic, or enjoy at home. We've made the teriyaki chicken thighs and the poached salmon - which were both easy and tasty! I am eager to try the recipes for carmelized balsamic-red onion soup with cheese-topped croutons, linguini with clam sauce, linguine with spinach and peas, green pea and feta quiche, and deeply roasted cauliflower.
The three bean salad, mac and cheese, spaghetti with meatballs, pasta with tuna, white beans, and artichoke hearts, chinese-style peanut noodles, chocolate-chip mint cookies and intensely chocolate brownies are sure to become regulars at our home.
Get Cooking would be excellent for someone just learning to cook - it gives you the essentials of cooking in simple steps and offers tasty rewards for your effort.

Power Foods: 150 Delicious Recipes with the 38 Healthiest Ingredients Review

This comes from the publishers of Whole Living magazine, part of the Marth Stewart empire. The magazine focuses on holistic (wholistic) living that seeks to improve the physical, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental imbalances in our lives. In practical terms, this means yoga, stress reduction, healthy eating, spiritual tranquility....you get the idea. Although I don't buy into all of this, we could all stand for more of it. This cookbook focuses on the healthy eating part. It contains beautiful pictures, straightforward recipes(not too many ingredients that are not too difficult to obtain) and some practical advice. Expect recipes with beets, salmon, nuts, eggs, healthy grains (e.g., quinoa) and more. I enjoy cooking and have a bookshelf of cookbooks, including Martha's two previous cookbooks. This book has the healthiest recipes of the group, but all her books have great recipes. There are few things put out by Martha Stewart living that aren't well conceived (no, I'm not a paid spokesperson).
There is an arm of nutrition research that is headed in the direction of this type of cooking: limiting wheat (gluten), limited saturated fat (no or minimal dairy, beef, pork or even fowl), low salt and sugar, incorporating healthy oils (nuts, olive oil), minimal processing, etc. Much of this is vegan cooking. Say goodbye to the Heart Attack Grill. If you have Celiac's disease, many of the recipes will suit you. This would also be good for people who have genetically related inflammatory-type diseases (e.g., Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, diabetes, etc.). Anecdotally, this type of diet has also been used with autistic children with some success.
Want to live to be 137? This is a great introduction into this type of cooking. If you are looking for a start into a truly healthy lifestyle, I recommend this text.

Complete Vegetarian Cookbook Review

I wasn't sure I wanted to be a vegetarian, but I had cancer, and I was told this might be a good route to investigate. Maybe fact, maybe myth, but I was willing to try anything. My concept of a vegetarian diet was not pretty. I didn't like vegetables.
I went to my local library, checked out this book and began to make the recipes in it. I was expecting bland and flavorless foods. I was wrong! Every recipe I tried from this book was absolutely delicious. The soups are especially wonderful.
I recovered and I'm fine now. My husband and I are semi-vegetarians (no red meat, very little chicken, but fish is okay) and we are eating, thanks to this book, more delicious food than we were eating before. I have to say, he is surprised at how delicious vegetarian food is, and so am I. And, this way of eating is higher in volume of food but less expensive!!!
I've looked at and tried several vegetarian cookbook recipes, but I keep coming back to this one. The recipes are just more tasty and delicious.

Pasta for All Seasons: 125 Vegetarian Pasta Recipes for Family and Friends Review

I was given a copy of Pasta for All Seasons just in time for a December trip to Tuscany, where my wife's mother has been living. I don't cook a lot but I risked all in this land of pasta expertise by preparing several pasta meals from Pasta for All Seasons. The smacking lips, toasts to the chef, and endlessly enthusiastic reviews from those in attendance told me I was really on to something. Pasta for All Seasons is a real find!

The New Moosewood Cookbook (Mollie Katzen's Classic Cooking) Review

Absolutely fabulous recipies that are extremely simple to prepare. The names of the vegetarian dishes are inventive and somehow make the recipes really come to life.
If you're like me, you like eating healthy and great-tasting food, but dread food preparation time and following hundreds of directions and end up missing a crucial step that ruins the dish. Some people are born with a gift for whipping up recipes from their own imaginations, but I'm not one of those people.
The only reason this book doesn't get 5 stars from me is that it should have been spiral bound. It's almost impossible to keep the book open on a kitchen counter unless you put heavy objects (very heavy) on both pages or you go an buy one of those gizmos that hold books open.
Nonetheless, this is my favorite recipe book. My kitchen is full of them, but this is the only one that almost never has any dust on it like the other ones. :-)

The Vegetarian Gourmet's Easy Low-Fat Favorites Review

I've recently become a vegetarian (within the last 2 months) and I cannot rave about this book enough! I've bought about 6-7 vegetarian cookbooks recently and this one takes the cake. It is definitely worth the investment. . . . and your carnivorous friends will like the recipes as well! Bobbie Hinman includes so many different types of recipes that you'll never get bored. The directions are very thorough and it's even notated on each recipe which type of vegetarian diet it falls under (i.e. V for vegan (no dairy), O for octo, etc.)
If you buy any vegetarian cookbook, let it be this one. It's great for a beginner like myself and the recipes are fantastic. . . . they really help bridge the gap for a new veggie.

3 Bowls : Vegetarian Recipes from an American Zen Buddhist Monastery Review

I was drawn to this book by its cover, so sometimes it is possible to tell a book by its cover. Seppo Ed Farrey is the head chef for the Dai Basatsu Zendo in Livingston Manor, NY, a catskills retreat 20 miles from the smallest town. It is a Rinzai Zen monastery led by Eido T Shimano Roshi. As the abbott, he teaches that cooking can be a practice of spirituality, since it involves beauty, economy of movement, lack of waste, and punctuality. The co-author cooks for nearly two dozen monks and laypeoplen, and up to 70 visitors. Meals are punctual, 7:15 AM and 1 PM. Meals are served and eaten in silence. Each diner gets three bowls and a set of chopsticks (Did you ever try to eat oatmeal with chopsticks?) The large bowl contains the main dish, the middle bowl contains a stew or curry, and the small bowl will contain a vegetable or salad (not a lettuce and tomato salad though). This book is filled with inspiring, simple, nutritious recipes, as well as a few pages dedicated to Zen terms and ingredient descriptions, and a page of 3 mail order sources for a few ingredients (this should have been expanded!) The book is also filled with sidebars and explanations on Zen practice: such as the Zen way to crack a hard boiled egg, sitting sesshin, jikijitsu, 10 precepts of buddhism, kinhin (walking meditation), dokusan (the interview with the roshi), doing zazen, and meal chants. The recipes include 10 breakfast dishes, like cream of quinoa, oatmeal pancakes, and 5 grain porridge. There are 10 rice dishes like spinach rice with tamari and mirin, shitaki rice, and a spicy rice bake with collard greens, black eyed peas and sweet potato. There are 8 noodle dishes like szechuan green beans and soba, or a classic marinara sauce that uses applesauce, onions, and fennel. There are 14 grain/bean/tofu stew and curry dishes for the second bowl, including a quinoa veggie stew, sweet potato burritos, a sunflower based stuffing, and a mushroom quinoa nut loaf. The 13 veggie dishes include asparagus with lime and tamari; kale with tofu; a non dairy mashed potato that uses pureed tofu, beets with hijiki, and tahini butternut squash. The 17 salads and dressings include beet raiti, a faux chicken salad that uses tempeh and lemon juice; and a red grape salad dressing. Of the eleven soups only four are miso (thankfully). As for desserts, as mentioned above, there are muffins, baked goods, spreads, pates, pestos, and sauces including cheesecake and rice pudding (yes, Zen meditators can let loose with pudding and cake).
