Everyday Indian: 100 Fast, Fresh and Healthy Recipes Review

I have only had the opportunity to make a half-dozen of the dishes. But every one of these has been delicious.
Some real favorites in there: My Mother's Chickpeas, Cherry Tomato & Paneer Salad, Tandoori Quesadillas, Bal's No-Butter Chicken.
Several things stand out.
1) Beautiful photography of the dishes.
2) Entertaining narrative for each dish. I felt like I know the author after just reading a couple of recipes. Very, very warm and personal.
3) Focuses on fast - fresh - and healthy... just as the subtitle says. She got me on the grapeseed & flaxseed oil kick when I cook.
One note. You should take the time to prepare her masalas and various spice blends as it will help prepare some of the dishes.
One small criticism. Give me a list of all of the recipes that use a given masala.
Still give it a 5 star. Please note the 3 star of another reviewer was a criticism that the book was not cut correctly. Not really a reflection on the content of this book and hardly the author's fault.

Indian in 6: 100 Irresistible Recipes That Use 6 Ingredients or Less Review

I am not the most perfect person in the world but I believe in integrity. If you say that a book is whatever it is, that is what I expect and why I spent my money for it. This book is a dissappointment because the title is misleading...in fact, the whole premise of the book is untruthful. The book raves about the fact that it has no less than 100 recipes that have SIX ingredients or less. The truth is that the vast majority of recipes have 8 ingredients or MORE. I tried very hard to reconcile the title with what I was seeing. I thought to myself, "Well, it's an interesting book...a beautiful book...the recipes are nice..." I also tried to examine the recipes for some reason as to why most of the recipes were more than 6 ingredients. "Maybe she doesn't consider salt an ingredient....maybe she only means spices." No dice.
What I realized is that I'd purchased a book that was deceitfully misguiding me into believing that I would be able to produce Indian dishes in 6 ingredients or less than blatantly defied it's own premise.
As for the actual content, I think the book is nice enough although there are better books with better recipes, more variety of recipes and greater variety of options within each recipe catagory. I already several books on Indian cooking that far exceed the quality, both in design and content, of this book and there are others that I have not yet purchased but reviewed that are better still. Therefore, my only reason for buying it is the reason I will be returning it. I bought Indian in 6 because the book promised 100 or so recipes with 6 ingredients or less. To date, I have only found 5 recipes (although there may be more) that meet this claim and I feel betrayed. So back it goes. Very simply.

Weight Watchers Take-Out Tonight : 150+ Restaurant Favorites to Make at Home--All 8 POINTS or Less Review

This may be the best book published under the Weight Watchers' umbrella. It is a wonderful collection of favorite recipes from eight culinary genres. Chinese, Mexican, Indian, Thai, Italian, Greek, Japanese and Deli cuisine is featured. I love food (that's my problem) and delights such as General Tso's Chicken, Chicken Saltimbocca, Spanakopita, Shrimp Pad Thai and Moo Goo Gai Pan are now healthy, tasty and guiltless. You will not believe that these recipes are all 8 points or less. What is even more remarkable is that the family or guests will not suspect that these recipes came from Weight Watchers. This is a great leap forward for Weight Watchers as it makes the most popular restaurant meals not only available in your home, but healthy and delicious.
The book, unlike some earlier Weight Watchers' cookbooks, is very well laid out. The chapters are color coded and the index is arranged by cooking cuisine, with the recipes listed alphabetically. There are many beautiful illustrations as well. Many of the recipes come with a box called Clever Cook's Tips that give the user some useful suggestions, techniques and recipe substitutions.
You don't have to be a Weight Watchers' client to appreciate this book. The recipes are just good, dieting or not! Buy this one...you won't be disappointed.

Madhur Jaffrey's Quick & Easy Indian Cooking Review

I've been eating Indian food for over 30 years and cooking it for over 20. I can't believe the few negative comments about this book. You do NOT need a pressure cooker. You will very soon be making food better than any Indian Restaurant in the US. I have made about 15 of the recipes without a single dud and four of them are now absolute regulars at our house. It is FAR better than all the other books with fancier photos or millions of recipes.

The Healthy Cuisine of India: Recipes from the Bengal Region Review

The Healthy Cuisine of India is a GREAT cookbook. I LOVE the recipes in this book. This is my first and only Indian cookbook so I can't really compare it to other Indian cookbooks. But I do know that I enjoy the food from these recipes even more than eating out at Indian restaurants. The author gives lots of details explaining the different types of spices and how to prepare them. There is also some discussion of the lore associated with the various recipes. And the food tastes GREAT. Highly recommended.

Easy Indian Cooking Review

I love the way the book is laid out, it is designed to make following the recipes fast and easy. There are three columns for each recipe, the left column has the measures listed in English units, the center column lists the ingredients, and the right column has the measures listed in metric units. The cooking instructions are excellent. The headnotes consist of information on the dish and tips for the dish. This is a cookbook by a teacher who knows how to put a recipe together.
Here's the beauty of the book, by way of example. How many times have you seen a cookbook recipe that calls for, say, "1 onion chopped"? What size onion would that be, exactly? Here in Texas an onion can be pretty big. In Europe, they aren't as big. What Suneeta has done is demystify the list of ingredients by using measures of cups, teaspoons, and tablespoons, or, metric weights. This is awesome! It makes the recipes foolproof. And it gives you a baseline for later changing the recipe up to suit personal tastes.
I own 5 Indian cookbooks, and I have read quite a few more. But this is the one that I default to.
I would recommend starting with the following:
Chicken in Cashew Saffron Gravy
North Indian Lamb Curry on Bread
Whole Baked Masala Cauliflower
Bell Peppers with Roasted Chickpea Flour
Dhokla (a fast and easy recipe using cream of wheat that produces beautiful results)
Split Yellow Peas with Tamarind Chutney
Gena's Kababs (flavored with green onions, ginger, cilantro, crisp fried onions)

The 30-Minute Vegan's Taste of the East: 150 Asian-Inspired Recipes--from Soba Noodles to Summer Rolls Review

As soon as I heard about this book, I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy. After all, what foodie (vegan or otherwise), wouldn't love a book filled with 150 Asian-inspired recipes you can prepare in 30 minutes or less? With a collection of delectable dishes from Afghanistan to Viet Nam, The 30-Minute Vegan's Taste of the East held the promise of accelerated culinary nirvana.
I am already a huge fan of the authors' best-selling book, The 30 Minute Vegan. So I wondered if they could they possibly outdo themselves with another collection of 30-minute recipes? As soon as I honed in on the recipe for Vanilla Cardamom Rose Lassi on page 38, I quickly realized they had.
The most enticing ingredients combine to create a romantic beverage that is intoxicatingly fragrant. I felt at ease substituting coconut milk kefir for the coconut milk yogurt suggested in this recipe, with palate-pleasing results. "Suggested" really is the key word in all of this book's wonderful recipes. In both 30-Minute Vegan books, authors Reinfeld and Murray encourage readers to experiment and have fun playing with the recipes. While many authors invite readers to create their own variations, in an almost magical way, Reinfeld and Murray truly inspire such creativity.
Like a mystery novel page-turner just waiting to be devoured, Taste of the East excited both my curiosity and my taste buds. With dishes like Tibetan Dumplings, Tempeh Vegetable Korma, and Arame Lotus Root Sauté, it was agonizingly difficult choosing the next recipe to sink my teeth into. Thoughtfully, Taste of the East is organized by country of origin, so you don't have to wait to get to the end of the book to get to the dessert recipes. Within each section, the recipes are listed in the order you'd find them on a menu, from appetizers to desserts. Each section starts with a glossary of ingredients unique to the country's cuisine, and sprinkled throughout the book are helpful boxes with Thoughtful Chef's Tips and Tricks. (What do you do if you tear your nori in the middle of making a sushi roll?) Highly useful appendixes include Preparation Basics for everything from toasting spices, nuts, and seeds to roasting tofu and tempeh.
In the spirit of sweetness, (and because I have absolutely no problem with eating dessert first), I dove straight ahead into two enticing recipes--Mango Custard Pudding from China and Black Rice Pudding from Thailand. Both desserts were decadently rich, creamy, and sweet.
After satisfying my sweet tooth, it was time to explore more serious fare. Inspired by the red lentil dal I enjoyed recently on a trip to Ananda Village, I decided to try the Indian Dhal and paired it with the recipe for Coconut Spinach Rice. True to the book's promise, once I had all of the ingredients assembled, both dishes went from stove to table in no more than thirty minutes and were as tasty as any dish it might take hours to prepare.
Next, I wanted to become reacquainted with a dish I'd only eaten once many years ago. Indonesian Gado Gado is a delightful medley of both raw and cooked vegetables served with a sassy peanut sauce dressing. Although the dish is traditionally made with cooked potatoes, I used yams instead, which together with roasted tempeh, red cabbage, green beans, carrots, cauliflower, red onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers created a vibrantly delectable fusion of flavors. The dressing blended peanut butter, coconut milk, garlic, garlic, jalapeño, maple syrup, and tamarind paste together and was the perfect accompaniment.
Before writing this review, I last tried the recipe for Sweet Soybean Sauce with Noodles, better known as Pad Siew. This simple dish, made with a soy-sauce marinade and stir-fried vegetables, is surprisingly tasty. Among the ingredients is a fish-free sauce (the recipe is in the book!) which substitutes for the traditional fish sauce used in many Thai dishes. It's an optional ingredient in this recipe, but it added a little pizazz to my Pad Siew. And I appreciate having an alternative to fish sauce on hand for all of my other Thai cooking.
Whether you want to impress your friends and family with your cooking prowess or you just enjoy eating great Asian cuisine, I highly recommend The 30 Minute Vegan's Taste of the East. This jewel of a book will inspire and delight you and awaken the creative culinary genius within you.

Gourmet Indian In Minutes: Over 140 Inspirational Recipes Review

My initial skepticism about cooking Indian food in minutes was quickly dispelled after making some of the taste-bud-popping recipes in this cookbook. I'm from the old school (Madhur Jaffrey cooking style of Indian food) which makes no apologies for long and elaborate recipes. So I had to read Gourmet Indian in Minutes by Monisha Bharadwaj from cover to cover before I tried even one recipe. I fell in love with the pared-down versions of classic Indian dishes. The photographs are the best I've seen in any cookbook of any food style: elegantly enticing, the best mingling of colors, attractive to the point of seductive, literally demanding you to taste this alluring dish.
Monisha Bharadwaj approaches her cooking with high standards recognizable in all the recipes of her book. The dishes must be authentic in taste, nutritional, quick to make, and beautiful to the eye. I come from long line of cooks who, unfortunately, paid little attention to the latter. I now love to make my food look beautiful since I have discovered that food tastes even better if it looks enchanting. Bharadwaj is a master at marrying food with beauty.
Make no mistake, these dishes are delicious and will satisfy your demand for authentic Indian food. I delighted in Tamater Mahal, a salad of "tomato castles" that very much reminds me of our Italian tomato salad, a favorite with my family. Bharadwaj includes an extensive section of lamb dishes such as "Lamb in Cashew Sauce", "Meatballs with Fennel", and a delicious appetizer of "Skewered Lamb in Spices" which is heavenly. When it comes to Indian cuisine, I have gravitated to the vegetarian dishes, though not exclusively. I would consider myself not a fan of tomato soup, but I loved the "Tomatoche Saar", a spicy tomato soup. This recipe indicates that I'll eat anything if you put enough spices and flavors in it! The Vegetable section and the Lentils, Beans, and Seeds sections were my overal favorites. I could wax ecstatically over the "Chole Panjim" (chickpeas in blazing red coconut curry), Beans Tikki (potato cakes topped with red beans), etc., but I'll spare you my gushing. You get the point. Suffice it to say, this section on pulses has some of the tastiest -- and quickest -- Indian dishes I have ever tried.
To get the most out of Gourmet Indian in Minutes, it is imperative you read the introduction and stock your pantry with Bharadwaj's list of spices, pastes, and food items. She offers shortcuts on various pastes and spices that will cut down the preparation time. If you do not adhere to these helpful hints, it is unlikely you will find the recipes quick to make. Follow Bharadwaj's helpful pointers in the Introduction, and the recipes that follow will be easy and completed in minutes.

Laxmi's Vegetarian Kitchen: Simple, Healthful Recipes from India's Great Vegetarian Tradition Review

I had always been intimidated by the ingredients lists in many Indian cookbooks then I took a class with the author. WOW! This book is incredible. Instruction is easy and clear with wonderful serving suggestions. The ingredients are easy to find in my grocery store. My favorite recipe is homemade paneer cheese (p. 165). It is super easy to prepare and always looks elegant in any dish. The paratha (Calcutta Plain Flakybread - p.82) is also very easy and tastes wonderful! This is an outstanding book for vegetarian and non-vegetarian alike.

Real Fast Indian Food: More Than 100 Simple, Delicious Recipes You Can Cook in Minutes Review

Positives: The recipes are very descriptively named, so one can
really get seduced into trying out a recipe! No extra-long list of ingredients.
She introduces common ingredients found in the american markets, that are not usually used in Indian cooking to create some interesting combinations.Ex: Brocolli and Red pepper raita,
Tuna burgers,Dill rice , Salmon in creamy sauce etc.
There is a section for microwave cooking.Lots of salads and veggie dishes that are totally new to indian food lovers are in here..
Drawback: Absolutely no pictures..so first time cooks and new Indian cooks, might not be happy.
It isn't fast cooking..but its cooking that's well worth the time. Preparing curry sauces beforehand is what makes her concept of cooking "fast" work.
However, I like to create a smaller version of her sauces and use it immediately. The madras curry sauce is great..makes your food look and taste like those served at the Indian restaurants..

From Bangkok to Bali in 30 Minutes: 175 Fast and Easy Recipes with the Lush, Tropical Flavors of Southeast Asia Review

Have you ever purchased a colorful asian cook book from the discount bin at the local bookstore, to find it's all pretty photos, but otherwise filled with aimless, unremarkable yet needlessly complicated or unclear recipes? I have.. to the point that most of my cooking involves going online, to find at least 3 recipes for whatever I have in mind that evening, and to use the best parts of each found recipe to come up with my own.. Well, I need to do so no more so far as Southeast Asia is concerned, thanks to the Laursens wonderful, concise, yet roomy-enough-to-allow-me-to-experiment recipes. As my wife knows, i HATE following recipes, as most 'exotic' recipes usually call for at least ONE vital mystery ingredient I will never stock, so I usually end up chucking the recipe and instead blaze thru my own rebellious trail. Well, the Laursens allow me the breathing room to make substitutions, letting me know which ingredients are key, and why, and how to make do when you don't have them all, and it's all very reassuring, aiming primarily at providing a basic, straightforward foundation for south east Asian cooking. Food the locals eat, yet with just the right amount of westernization, this book was written for me.. No wild look-at-me recipes that you will either make once and never again or not dare to make at all.... I was such a geek I took the book to my local asian supermarket and was found in the sauces/spices aisle thumbing thru pages to make sure I knew which soy sauces/fish sauces/chilli pastes to weed thru... Enough of my quirks.. the recipes? I've had this book but two days, and have made 2 meals, that will make my local thai/vietnamese restaurants sadly miss a good chunk of my business, as they came out flawless; amazingly so, given the simplicity and conciseness of the recipes...Again, best $15 spent.

The Indian Slow Cooker: 50 Healthy, Easy, Authentic Recipes Review

I have been waiting forever for someone to write a wonderful collection of Indian recipes for the slow cooker and my prayers have been answered! Anupy Singla has put together some lovely easy Indian recipes - where all you do is throw a bunch of easy-to-find ingredients in the slow cooker, set it and forget it for several hours! The recipes mainly focus on vegetarian ingredients but there are some lovely meat curries (with notes on how to make many of them vegetarian with soy crumbles or seitan).
The fact that she has figured out how to make kheema (a ground beef and peas comfort-food dish) in the slow cooker (genius!) is worth the price of this book! I can't wait to make every recipe and will probably be making a batch of the "Wet Curry" every week to freeze and use for quick weeknight meals.
Overall, I am thrilled with this book - it will let our family eat delicious and healthy Indian meals more often than we were able to before. Yippee!
