Cooking the RealAge (R) Way: Turn back your biological clock with more than 80 delicious and easy recipes Review

To put my review in perspective for you I have been focused on food and cooking for the last 25 years. I have been reading anything about nutrition and health for the last 10 years. Additionally, I was a hospital administrator for just under 2 decades. So I know the effect that unhealthy lifestyle decisions can make on the human body. If you are a new student of health or nutrition this is an excellent place to begin your research.
I enjoyed the predecessor to this book "The Real Age Makeover". I appreciated the doctor's unique approach to healthy food and lifestyle and the way that he tried to quantify specific changes on your health by using age. This book is a great tie in to the original book.
The author does cover the basic information from "The Real Age Makeover" in this book. If your don't want to read about the science of how the specific changes work, you can simply purchase this book "Cooking the Real Age Way" and skip the prior book. The author outlines the 27 practices for food choices that can bring about at Real Age reduction of 14 years. Many of these practices are common sense, like eat food that isn't processed. But some of the practices are less obvious, like eat 10 tablespoons of tomato sauce every week.
This book is geared to those that are kitchen beginners. The doctors explain many cooking techniques that experienced cooks think are second nature. But for those that are accustomed to relying on carry out these sections are critical to their success. The doctors also discuss how to effectively use the freezer so that ingredients are readily available for quick weeknight meals.
The authors do a nice job of detailing what should be included in a healthy pantry. If you are new to healthy cooking a healthy pantry is key to being able to make fast healthy meals for your family. Without healthy quick options at the ready it is so much easier to call for pizza or Chinese, and neither of these delivery options are particularly healthy.
The doctors also created tables of vegetables by season and detail what to look for in the specific fresh vegetable, how to use them, and why they are good for your health.
The recipe section of the book begins on page 155. The doctors also provide an exhaustive nutritional analysis. Every possible item is detailed included milligrams of specific vitamins and minerals. The recipes themselves are good, but not too exotic for the standard American palate. The directions are clearly written. The ingredients are available in your standard mega mart (Wegman's or Whole Foods) anywhere in the US.
If you need a go-to cookbook that is healthy this is a good choice. There are many other options available that you might also consider, my personal favorites are "The Professional Chef's Techniques of Healthy Cooking" by the Culinary Institute of America, and "Conscious Cuisine" by Cary Neff.
If you are new to cooking, and more specifically healthy cooking this is great book to get you started. If you have been cooking for a while, but want to cook more healthy meals for your family you should consider the two books I referenced in the last paragraph.

Eat Vegan on $4.00 a Day: A Game Plan for the Budget Conscious Cook Review

There were things I really liked about this book and things I didn't like about it. I am a vegetarian who is striving to move to a totally vegan diet and I really liked the premise of this book. I thought it would really help me make the transition and do it inexpensively.
In a way, it did help me. The first 29 pages of the book are very helpful - packed with info on shopping inexpensively for vegan food. The rest of the book contains a 7 day menu [3 meals per day] and recipes. The author is clear and concise without being preachy. I found her writing easy & enjoyable to read.
But, in another way, I felt kind of ripped off. The first 29 pages were full of info and were great reading, but they weren't worth the price of the book by a long shot. The recipes were OK - some of them are extremely simplistic [like the one for oatmeal: water, oats, salt. Put it in a pot and cook it]. I did not find many recipes that I found appealing - in fact, I doubt I'll try any recipes in the book [other than oatmeal, which I already eat on a regular basis....]. So, it was kind of frustrating - it took me less than 45 minutes [literally] to read this entire book [it is a slim volume, even padded with simple recipes]. I really did not feel I got my money's worth out of the book - I could have done better spending one hour on the internet googling vegan meals and tips.
I also felt that the claim that you can eat vegan for $4 a day was a bit exaggerated. For one thing, the portion sizes she gives are extremely small - for example, on day one you are supposed to eat half a cup of oatmeal for breakfast [and that is it.] For most people, one half a cup of plain oatmeal would not be enough to get them through till lunch. Can you imagine a 180 lb guy trying to get by on that? I can't. The lunches and dinners seemed very slim on serving size too - I think most people would probably end up having to increase what she counts as a full meal just to get enough calories. She does not include calorie counts in her menu plan, but looking at them, I'd guess the menu plans have 1,000-1,200 calories planned per day, which isn't enough for most healthy, active adults. [that is "famine level" caloric intake according to the World Health Organization].
I also felt the prices she said she was getting on the items she includes were awfully low - I am a long time frugal shopper and I have never seen prices as low as the ones she was quoting on some of the products she recommends. I'm a bit skeptical that anyone could really eat what she's recommending for $4 a day. [She also assumes a well stocked pantry in that calculation - such as spices on hand that aren't counted in the cost].
Now, that said, I DO believe that eating the way she recommends is FAR less expensive than eating the average American diet, even if she has exaggerated the inexpensiveness of it. This is still a far superior way of eating - both health wise and financially.
So, I truly felt conflicted by this book - 29 pages of good info and some recipes that were somewhat helpful, but not worth the price of an entire book IMO. I wish there had been MORE to this.
In summary, this book was helpful, but it could have been so much more helpful!

Pregnancy Cooking and Nutrition For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness)) Review

I LOVE this book. I am sitting here shocked by all the valuable information this contains. I thought that I had read all that I needed to know about pregnancy nutrition based on plenty of sources I have previously sought out. However, this book has shown me that I was very wrong in that assumption. I discovered that I was often consuming things that are really hurting me and my unborn children.
Did you know that agave nectar is believed to stimulate contractions? I will spare you the details on why, but I REALLY NEEDED to know that. I also found out that it is a MYTH that sugar intake causes you to get diabetes (a huge relief)! I even appreciate learning how I can use my quinoa to make healthy bars to snack on.
This book should be given to every woman on this planet. It "walks" you through specific aspects of nutrition from pre-conception to post pregnancy (breast-feeding, formula issues, weight loss, exercise...) I was looking for up-to-date info. regarding specific herbs, common problem foods, meal plans, etc. I found this and a whole lot more.
This is comprehensive wisdom-so much info. contained in this book. I started to wonder if perhaps the title should have been more expansive to give it justice. At the same time, this is a fun, easy read.
I have already begun to make positive changes in my diet and in the way I shop and feed my family based on these recommendations. I have saved a lot of worry and money, because I now have confidence that I am making healthy, informed decisions.
Additionally, I found critical advice for mothers in the "special considerations" category (teen moms/cancer survivors/moms of multiples). There's ways to help control certain medical conditions, tips on how to survive bed rest while avoiding too much weight gain. There's info. on allergies. toxins in food, common-sense organics (including dirty dozen list), meal planning/preparation, fertility issues...it goes on and on.
I am SO thankful that I was able to discover all of this in just one resource. With all that is out there, if you can only get one book and need the information instead of a bunch of fancy pictures-this is it.

The Paleo Diet for Athletes: A Nutritional Formula for Peak Athletic Performance Review

This book changed the way I look at nutrition. I have always been active and eaten a decent diet, but I knew I was too heavy on sugars and carbs in general. When I got into triathlons, I got Joe Friel's The Triathlete's Training Bible, and it turned me onto the Paleo Diet.
Since both authors have advanced degrees (Loren Cordain has a PhD in Exercise Physiology and Friel a M.S. in Exercise Science), it is heavy on science. The authors base their claims on numerous sources, and reference these sources throughout.
The basic premise is that the way we currently eat is contrary to how our bodies evolved over the millions of years prior to agriculture. Lean meat, fish, and fresh fruits and vegetables should be our staple, with a small twist. Paleolithic man could never have been a high level endurance athlete, as he just wouldn't have gotten enough carbohydrate to replenish his glycogen stores after a long or very intense workout.
This book, then, makes adjustments to the standard Paleo Diet to include certain types of foods normally not allowed during SPECIFIC periods of the pre and post-exercise window.
Post Script: Though I don't like to comment on others' reviews, I feel I must say that I don't agree with the assertion that the book doesn't place enough emphasis on when to eat the foods you eat. After the intro, the entire first few chapters are exactly that: What types of food to eat, and EXACTLY when to eat them.

Well Fed: Paleo Recipes for People Who Love to Eat Review

When we look back on the year 2011, it will remembered by those of us who closely follow nutrition and health as the year of the Paleo cookbooks. Here is just a small sampling of the most amazing and best recipe books that have released this year highlighting the virtues of healthy low-carb, Paleo-friendly dishes for you to nourish the bodies of your health-conscious family:
- The Paleo Diet Cookbook: More than 150 recipes for Paleo Breakfasts, Lunches, Dinners, Snacks, and Beverages by Dr. Loren Cordain
- Paleo Comfort Foods: Homestyle Cooking for a Gluten-Free Kitchen by Charles and Julie Mayfield
- Make it Paleo: Over 200 Grain Free Recipes For Any Occasion by Bill Staley and Hayley Mason
- Primal Blueprint Quick and Easy Meals: Delicious, Primal-approved meals you can make in under 30 minutes (Primal Blueprint Series)
It's an impressive assortment of books that absolutely must be on the bookshelf of anyone and everyone who makes this way of eating their preferred plan of choice. And the good news is there are MANY more to come in 2012 and beyond as people start becoming more and more familiar with the benefits of going grain-free, sugar-free, legume-free, and dairy-free to attain optimal health. Whether you are new to the Paleo, primal, ancestral or low-carb lifestyle or if you're a long-time seasoned veteran at it, we all need help sometimes sprucing up our diet and keeping it from becoming the drab, boring and undesirable lifestyle that it is stereotyped as being.
That's why I'm happy to share with you one more truly amazing cookbook gem that released in 2011 that I'm sure will become a go-to resource in health-focused kitchens across the United States and around the world. It's called Well Fed: Paleo Recipes for People Who Love to Eat by Melissa Joulwan from "The Clothes Make The Girl" blog (NOTE: There's also an e-book version of the book and special sneak peek of the book available at Melissa's web site).
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Melissa's blog and story about how she came to the Paleo diet, I highly encourage you to check out her blog and learn more about the woman behind this book. Of course, she divulges much of her life's story at the beginning of Well Fed which will give you an appreciation for who she is now and why a cookbook was a logical choice for her to write. The "Dina-Chow" that's sprinkled throughout this book is simply awesome and there's no other way to describe it. The photos of the food accompanying each recipe is the actual finished recipe right before it was devoured by the Joulwan clan. Your mouth can't help but become a waterfall in anticipation of what is sure to be some of the most interesting food you've ever eaten. Where else can you get Paleo low-carb versions of a wide variety of ethnic-based foods like "Chocolate Chili," "BBQ Fork Fried Rice" (made without rice), "Shepherd's Pie," and so much more in these 174 pages of absolute decadence? Flipping through the pages of this book, I honestly wanted to try EVERY SINGLE RECIPE-it's THAT good!
I could appreciate that Melissa made a convenient one-page called "The `No' List" on page 3 followed immediately by another quickie one-page called "The `Yes' List." I HIGHLY encourage you newbies to this way of eating to photocopy these pages and post them on your refrigerator door, kitchen cabinets, bathroom mirrors...wherever you'll look at them on a daily basis! Absorb what is shared on these pages and you will quickly become smarter on nutrition than about 99% of the population, including most doctors, dietitians and those who pretend to know what the heck they're talking about regarding nutritional health on television (*cough* Dr. Oz *cough*). These really are the bare knuckles basics to Paleo eating spelled out more succinctly than anything else I've ever seen. And that's saying a lot because I've seen it all. The bottom line: just eat real food! This is a MAJOR theme of what it actually means to be "well fed."
While this book will likely be placed in the "diet" or "health" section of bookstores or on places like Amazon, Melissa is quick to point out that she considers this book as neither. It could more accurately be called an "inspirational" book that will tickle your taste buds with recipes that will as she puts it "make you want to smash in your face with joy." Now that's an image I won't soon forget! It's part and parcel of the magic that Melissa Joulwan brings to the table as an ever-enthusiastic and unapologetic defender of her simple philosophy of "Just Eat" and everything else will fall into place and take care of itself.
Since much of the book includes recipes that you won't likely see anywhere else, I recommend that you pay close attention to the "About The Recipes" where you can get a lesson on the most common ingredients and cooking tools/methods you'll be using and how they work to produce these recipes. You'll save yourself a lot of headaches later if you heed this advice from someone who's been there, done that already. And Melissa also reminds you that the presentation of the food is an important element in being Well Fed as well. You'll rarely eat out in a restaurant again if you apply what she teaches on page 13.
The nitty gritty of how to make this book work well for you is on page 16 when she describes "The Weekly Cookup" that includes shopping lists, meal planning, and how to construct a meal that will knock the socks off of the people you are serving (yes, even your kids will think you're a culinary rock star after eating these meals!). Making sure you have the right amount and kind of foods on hand at all times that you can grab and start cooking with is the key. Then it's just a matter of opening up "Your Paleo Pantry" and pulling out your choice of some of the most remarkable spices and seasonings that will awaken the foods you are about to consume. Melissa also tells you what "Essential Kitchen Tools" to use to be the best darn cook in your neighborhood. Sound impossible? I guess you gotta get Well Fed to find out!
I'm always curious about how the recipes in cookbooks like this one are displayed. But Melissa made it a lot more fun than I've ever seen before. She gives you the title of the recipe, adds a cutesy yet descriptive subtitle (i.e. for the "Olive Oil Mayo" recipe, she included the subtitle "You'll Never Consider Store-Bought Again"), tells you the serving size, how long it takes to prepare and cook the recipe, a brief commentary on the recipe itself, the ingredients to use, the directions, an empty "Notes" section for you to add your own variations to the cookbook for your personal use, a "How You Could Do That" section for suggested variations, as well as "Tasty Ideas" about what you could make to complement this particular recipe. It's this kind of practical, real-world advice that sets this cookbook apart from the ones I've seen a million times before.
If you wanna know what being Well Fed is really all about, then all you gotta do is gaze your eyes at the photo used on the back cover: `Nuff said! Isn't it time you became Well Fed?

The Biggest Loser Cookbook: More Than 125 Healthy, Delicious Recipes Adapted from NBC's Hit Show Review

Based on the NBC hit show "The Biggest Loser," this colorful cookbook is a plus to anybody's library that is trying to lose weight or even just eat healthy. The promise of the book is that eating healthy can be quick and delicious AND it doesn't have to mean bland, tasteless food- and the book delivers.
Readers will find a short review of the Biggest Loser's way to lose weight- which is sensible- you eat right and exercise. Then comes the heart of the book- over 100 recipes for the various meals like breakfast, snacks, etc. And unlike a lot of cookbooks, each recipe shows you exactly how many calories, fat grams, protein grams, carb grams, fiber grams, sodium, and cholesterol it contains- which is nice for a wide variety of other populations such as those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease.
A sensible and practical cookbook, a lot of people will probably get their money's worth. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if a shoulder problem keeps you from getting all the benefits of lifting weights.

Midnight Snacks: 150 Easy and Enticing Alternatives to Standing by the Freezer Eating Ice Cream from the Carton Review

It's funny to realize that there were really no cookbooks for this "meal" that everyone enjoys. So I got this book, and there was everything from dishes to serve the kids' friends at slumber parties to great recipes for making those too expensive power bars that are perfect for breakfast. I particularly like using this book's recipes for my cocktail parties (I first saw it reviewed in Playboy of all places, because they loved the sexy dishes for two that are featured in the book), since the whole idea behind this guide is simple, appealing, small treats that you can cook up without a lot of fuss. It emphasized improvization. Stocking a few key items (even some new ones that are very versatile). And having fun with this quirky, miniature meal. And the writing is just as fun-loving. Very witty, and the perfect gift for college kids, newlyweds, or anyone looking to expand their repertoire of casual, satisfying bites.

Eating for Lower Cholesterol: A Balanced Approach to Heart Health with Recipes Everyone Will Love Review

Finally, a book to tell us what we should be eating every day to stay healthy instead of the latest trend that caters to a particular food group and quick results. The key is to have lasting results by understanding what is and is not good for your body.
I recommend buying 2 copies of this book. One to keep at home for the wonderful recipes and one to take with you every time you go food shopping or eat out. This book answered every question I have about how to feed my family healthy and delicious foods. It will provide you with the insight on how to shop for the most nutritious foods and what to look at on the food labels. Not only are the recipes healthy, but they are delicious, easy to make, and offer suggestions on variations to meet your personal tastes.
This book also offers recommendations on the foods you should and should not be feeding your children and many ideas on how to make them healthy eaters throughout their lifetime. Due to the appetizing recipes and overall nutritional recommendations, I intend to share this book with every member of my family.

New Vegetarian Baby Review

I just finished reading this book, and I wish I had it when my daughter was born!
We becams vegetarian (nearly vegan) over the last year or so, and that's why I decided to read this book: even though my daughter is no longer a baby (she's 2 and half), I wanted to start from scratch with the info on vegetarian nutrition for children.
This book offers a wealth of information on macro- and micro-nutrients and on all staple foods for a vegetarian/vegan baby. There's plenty of info on grains, vegetables, beans and nuts, fruits, and all vitamin and minerals necessary for a baby to thrive. I found the info on grains particularly interesting, as it went into grains I have never heard of or was not very familiar with and showed the ideal sequence to introduce the various grains, from the lightest and gluten free to the more common, glutinous corn and wheat.
Because even in omnivorous families, meat is one of the last items introduced to a baby, I think this is a great resource for any parent, vegetarian or not, as fruits, vegetables and grains are usually introduced first in any case, and this book will explain you how and when it's best to introduce each of those foods, also taking into consideration the prevention or spotting of possible allergies or intolerances.
The book also offers ideas for menus for your baby, and at the end there is a useful FAQ section.
A great book, which I am planning to buy as a gift the next time a friend is pregnant.
