250 Gluten-Free Favorites: Includes Dairy-Free, Egg-Free and White Sugar-Free Recipes Review

I already own two of their previous gluten free cookbooks which I've found to be excellent, especially their desserts. This cookbook does an excellent job of describing not only what ingredients are safe for the gluten intolerant but what each GF flour brings to the table (pun inadvertent!) nutritionally.
Features such as a table which shows how long and where to store ingredients (shelf, frig, freezer) is a handy resource. There are also many recipes that are egg free, dairy free and white sugar free.
Another table lists nutrition data for many GF flours including protein, fat, carbs, fiber, calcium and iron. Pretty nifty.
So far, I have tried only a couple of recipes. One was the Ancient Grains bread in the bread machine. I found it came out a little undone, however, they do give directions on how to test and leave in longer if this is the case.
One disappointment was that I found no recipes using agave nectar, which I'm trying to incorporate more in my cooking and baking.
All in all, I think this is a very good cookbook if one is an experienced cook. If you are starting out in the GF cooking world, by all means buy this book, particularly if you are concerned about nutrition for yourself and your family.

Recipes for Dairy-Free Living Review

I bought a copy of this book after reading a newspaper article on the author that also featured some of the recipes included in the book. It's a great addition to my cookbook collection. Although I don't have a problem with dairy foods, I have some friends that can't tolerate them, so I bought this book to help me create a dairy-free dinner party. It was a huge success. I found the recipes easy to prepare and my friends raved about the dishes I served. The biggest "hit" on the menu was the Coconut-Lime Seafood Stew and I had to prove that the Flourless Chocolate Almond Cake contained no dairy ingredients. I found the book to be very informative and liked the fact that I could find all the ingredients at a local grocery store. My "dairy challenged" friends all want a copy of this book, so part of my Christmas shopping is already taken care of!! Thanks Denise

Delicious Food for a Healthy Heart: Over 120 Cholesterol-Free, Low-Fat, Quick & Easy Recipes Review

This book has over 120 heart healthy, delicious recipes for vegans and non-vegans alike! Let me get this out of the way...my absolute, hands down, favorite recipe in this book: "Linguine With Spicy Red Garbanzo Sauce". The simplicity of the healthful ingredients was a real shock to me. I figured ok, another spaghetti recipe...It is so much more. Serve it with some "Cheezy Garlic Bread" and a spinach salad topped with "Tomato-Garlic Dressing". Do your palate and your heart a favor...With a mere 21 calories and 0 fat, this dressing packs a punch! Of course if you've been missing ranch, there is the "Classic Ranch Dressing" to try as well...so creamy! The "Moroccan CousCous" is authentic and tasty. I love it! "Garlic Infused Smashed Potatoes" are heavenly when smothered in "Golden Gravy". It almost seems wrong that there is 0 guilt associated with these dishes! Looking for breakfast? Try what is (in my opionion) a vegan's best friend...flax! The "Flaxjacks" on page 40 are a tasty way to start your day right. I like to top them with "Peanut Whip" instead of jam. "Tropical Style Museli" is filling and healthful, I love it with a dash of vanilla rice milk.
Of course there are too many recipes to review them all here, but I always save room for dessert...in this book namely the "Apple Crisp". Simple, traditional and stunning...a real crowd-pleasing crisp.
This book is chock full of recipes, 14 days of menus, information to keep your heart happy and extensive information on ingredients. I like that the grain section even offers pressure-cooker alternatives for most of the dishes.
Kudos to you Jo, you've done it again!

The Milk-Free Kitchen: Living Well Without Dairy Products Review

As a mother of a child who has recently been diagnosed with milk allergy, I found this book disappointing. Prior to it's purchase, I had spent a considerable amount of time in health food stores becoming familiar with all the substitutes there are for milk - such as rice "milk", soy products, etc.. None of these are used in this book. As the author admits, this book focuses on what a person can eat. Most of these receipes are food dishes that just about anyone who has cooked before would already know can be prepared without milk. For those not so obvious, the author only substitutes water in the place of milk. I could have just as easily look up these receipes in a regular cook book. What I really needed was something that helps me create dishes for my daughter that she loves, but that she can no longer have due to her allergy. What I found most helpful was the section on cheese and have since started giving my daughter goat cheese products to see if she can tolerate this.
To anyone in search of good milk-free receipes, I suggest writing to or going to the web site of those companies who make products to replace dairy, such as soy, rice, almond, and other multi-gran products. They have really saved me.

Secrets of Lactose-free Cooking Review

Excellent recipies with ingredients that are widely available for consumers that live near a organic-based supermarket. The tofu cheesecake and veggie burgers are amazing! The medical information at the beginning of the book was very helpful.I look forward to the next addition with more recipies/and more photographs of the finished products instead of the whimsical illustrations.

Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet: The Grain-Free, Lactose-Free, Sugar-Free Solution to IBD, Celiac Disease, Autism, Cystic Fibrosis, and Other Health Conditions (Healthy Living Cookbooks) Review

This is my first review but I had to write one because this book is fantastic! I have made five recipes in the past five days and my 5 year old son (with severe ulcerative colitis) has loved every single one (the rest of the family has loved the food too)! I own every SCD cookbook and this one seems to have the most recipes that are winners. So far, we have made: a chinese chicken dish (actually tastes like chinese chicken but without soy sauce- amazing); vietnamese pork (same); almond puff (tastes like cake!); chili-lime crackers (tastes like mild cheez-its!); and shortbread (buttery and tasty). We are going to keep trying recipes but love this cookbook and wanted to post this review while ordering another copy for my son's grandmom. Well worth adding to your library.

The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook: Delicious Dairy-Free Cheeses and Classic "Uncheese" Dishes Review

Overall, this book is really great, with a couple of exceptions. Before I proceed, though, here are a few tips that might come in useful:
1. If your nutritional yeast flakes have a powdery appearance, make sure you use only half the amount called for in any recipe! If a recipe calls for ½ cup of yeast, use only a quarter cup. This is especially important for people who dislike nutritional yeast as much as I do. Don't omit the yeast altogether, because in just the right quantity, it does add an unmistakable "finishing touch" of cheesiness to recipes.
2. Recipes that are made up only of plain flour, nutritional yeast, and seasonings generally do not taste like cheese; they taste more like savory gravy. On a similar note, bean-based recipes are going to taste more like hummus than like cheese. That's not necessarily a bad thing if you're prepared for it, of course.
3. I find that most of the recipes in this book contain too much lemon juice. Maybe I'm just sensitive to the tartness of lemon, but I'd personally recommend either omitting the lemon juice in most recipes, or at least cutting back on it significantly. Also, I find that many of the recipes can be pretty bland because they lack the saltiness that makes dairy cheese so appealing. That can easily be remedied, though, by just adding more salt to taste.
That said, here are my individual recipe reviews:
GOOEY GRILLED CHEEZ -- This crisp sandwich with its sharp, creamy filling is really satisfying. I do add a little more ketchup to the cheez than suggested, though, and a LOT more salt (about ¾ heaped tsp). The cheez makes the best ever vegan pizza, too. Take note, however, that vegan cheeses don't get stretchy, so if you'd like some texture or "chewiness" on your pizza, try topping the cheez with some mock meat, like sliced and fried Tofurkey Italian sausage. Tomato sauce + cheez + sausage + minced garlic & herbs + a drizzle of olive oil for moistness = paradise. Mmmmm.
CROCK CHEEZ -- If you're craving sharp, salty, aged cheddar, look no further. This is it. It may not taste exactly like the cheddar you were used to, but it can easily fool non-vegans when served on Ritz crackers. I'd advise you to omit the lemon juice, and to refrigerate the cheez overnight, because you probably won't like it straight from the food processor. Mix Crock Cheez with some salsa, and you'll have the world's best, most cheddary, vegan nacho cheese. Also, if you were a smoked cheddar fan, you absolutely must try the Smoky Crock Cheez variation. Yummm, it tastes *exactly* like real smoked cheddar.
TOFU BOURSIN -- Very, very close to the real thing. It calls for vegan mayo, and I'd suggest that you use Vegenaise for best results. Make sure you refrigerate it before eating -- it's not that good straight from the food processor. The White Bean Boursin is excellent, too, but it tastes more like hummus than like cheese.
GEE WHIZ SPREAD, AGED CHEDDAR VARIATION -- This makes the perfect carry-me-along potluck dip. It doesn't taste like cheese, but more like creamy gourmet roasted red pepper hummus. I would definitely advise you to significantly reduce the lemon juice (I just use a little more than one tbsp, as opposed to the recommended three). Remember to chill the spread before serving. Serve with chips and toasted pita triangles...yum!
CHEEZ-A-RONI -- If you have any Gee Whiz left over, be sure to try this recipe. It's very rich and creamy, guaranteed to subdue any macaroni and cheese craving. It's also a good way of using up Gee Whiz spread. I detest prepackaged vegan macaroni cheese, but I look forward to Cheez-A-Roni and Colby Mac & Cheez days...
COLBY CHEEZ (a block uncheese) -- A cashew-pimiento cheez that is yum yum. I personally wouldn't eat it cold, but this stuff makes the best "macaroni and cheese" when melted. It can get squishy when grated, but don't let that discourage you. Melt the cheez in a little soymilk, add lots of margarine and a fair amount of salt, and stir the sauce into cooked elbow macaroni. You'll be amazed how close this tastes to the real thing. Orgasmically good!!
ZUCCHINI CHEDDA SOUP -- You absolutely can't go wrong with cashews and pimientos. This soup is as cheddary as it is hearty. I think even zucchini haters would enjoy it.
SWISS CHEEZ (another block uncheese) -- This stuff was bland and weird tasting when cold; however, it was delicious layered and melted in lasagne. It makes a good choice when you need a "cheese" that's mild and mozzarella-ey, and tastes better than commercial vegan mozzarella. Don't eat it cold, though, because, like commercial vegan hard cheeses, it's pretty icky that way.
MINUTE MAN CHEEZ SAUCE -- I thought this was really bad. I'd advise you to skip this if you don't like nutritional yeast.
BUFFALO MOSTARELLA -- Another thumbs down. I found it very oaty tasting, but I know many people who do love it.
AMAZING MAC 'N' CHEEZ SAUCE -- Not recommended at all. It tastes nothing like cheese...more like gravy, in fact. I imagine it'll be good with veggie fried chicken, though.
Overall, this book is great, apart from some recipes that I haven't liked, and my initial failures due to too much lemon juice and/or nutritional yeast. I do like the way I can get creative with the recipes. As a last note, try not to expect the recipes to taste exactly like the cheeses that you were used to, because they probably won't...just as vegetarian burgers don't taste exactly like Big Macs; they are to be enjoyed in their own right.
