Gluten-Free Recipes for the Conscious Cook: A Seasonal, Vegetarian Cookbook (Whole-Body Healing Series) Review

I've long been a fan of Leslie Cerier's easy, earthy style of cooking, full of hearty grains, gentle seasonings, and organic produce. Though I'm not gluten-free, I added this book to my collection for all the above reasons.
The previous review is so unfair-- to give a book a one-star review because it has no photos? It would have been nice, for sure, but some publishers don't have the budget. And because there is a recipe for cooking short-grain brown rice? These instructions preceded a whole chapter on making healthier sushi, hence its inclusion. Also such instructions are good for people who buy grains in bulk and who are just getting familiar with healthier grains.
I've already made several recipes from this book and they are outstanding. Corn Grits with Sautéed Onion, Kale, and Cheddar (I used vegan cheese), Soba with Tempeh and Broccoli in Coconut Sauce, and Cilantro Pesto were all great. There are probably more dishes here for cool-weather cooking, so I'm looking forward to trying things like Spiced Yams with Pecans and Garlicky Baked Beans with Parsnips and Butternut Squash in the fall.
Aside from being good for gluten-free cooking, this book is a great introduction for using a wide array of whole grains we don't usually think of, like millet--it's such a tasty, healthy grain, and I rarely think to use it. Thanks, Leslie, for another great collection of recipes and tips! If you like this you'll also like Going Wild in the Kitchen, one of my favorite veg cookbooks.

Color Me Vegan: Maximize Your Nutrient Intake and Optimize Your Health by Eating Antioxidant-Rich, Fiber-Packed, Color-Intense Meals That Taste Great Review

I received my copy of "Color me vegan" in the mail yesterday and I couldn't wait to start cooking. I think I read every single recipe and I was excited to see that they were original and covered a very wide range of produce. I was wondering how Colleen was going to manage writing recipes for starters, soups, main courses, side dishes and desserts of every color. Well, she did. From then creamy avocado mousse (delicious green recipe) to the red chard pie (red recipe, of course) , this book is chock full of tips, nutritional information, variations, and even some food history.
I like the fact that you don't have to constraint yourself to the ingredients listed in the recipe. The book packs some much information that you can make your own choices about how you would like your recipe to look and taste like. I recommend that you read the entire recipe, as well as the notes on the top and bottom before you start cooking. The book itself is very easy to read, it has clear instructions and doesn't call for too many ingredients like other books do. The ingredients are easy to find if they aren't in your pantry already. There isn't a picture for every single recipe, but the pictures in the book are really beautiful. They make you want to cook.
If you are new to veganism, this is a good way to start cooking new food. After testing some of this recipes, you will realize that vegan food is not "rabbit food" or bland food. Rather, it is healthful and delicious.Last night I made a pie, a dessert and a vegan cheese. Everything was yummy!

Vegan Success: Scrumptious, Healthy Vegan Recipes for Busy People Review

I'm not completely a vegan eater, but have been gradually cleaning up my eating over the past few years and really like having more fresh, healthy food in my diet. The one problem I'd had was that so many of the vegetarian and vegan recipes did take a long time to prepare. And while I'm an excellent cook, these days I have other things I want to put my attention on - like playing with my grandson and writing a book. So it was with complete utter delight that I received "Vegan Success" and started to use it. The crowning joy was when my husband, who told me when we got married that he didn't like and didn't eat vegetables, asked for seconds and sometimes even thirds. I think the success is that Susan and her partner are busy people too - and so they've really tested these recipes under real-life conditions. Anyway, I love being able to get genuinely healthy meals that my husband enjoys in a quick hurry. I'd recommend this book whether you love to cook or not - it's that straightforward.

The Vegan Table: 200 Unforgettable Recipes for Entertaining Every Guest at Every Occasion Review

Some background - This past mid-April, my husband and I attended the 5-Day McDougall Program in Santa Rosa, CA. Colleen was there as one of the chefs giving a cooking demo/lesson to help us learn how to cook food for our new healthy diet. My husband has always been an omnivore and swore he would never give up meat (but he was willing to attend the 5-day session with me). I have been what I call a fat 'imperfect vegan' for over 20 years (cheese, butter and oil were my vices). Enter Colleen. She prepared a few dishes out of this new book and passed around servings for us to eat. My hubby said: Babe, if we can eat like this all the time, I'll never miss the meat. And I agreed. We adopted a lowfat vegan diet that week, and have not looked back. I have cooked several of the recipes that Colleen gave us that week (all from the book) and they are all yummy. I have ordered the book because I want more. Colleen, I hope you are reading this: You are a wonderful, witty, talented chef. My husband and I loved your your cooking, and your wonderful sense of humor. Dr McDougall, Mary, Jeff, and Doug helped us adopt this new healthy diet, but you definitely sealed the deal. The 'No-queso Quesadillas' have been our go-to snack when we need a little something-something, now! Since April 15, I have effortlessly lost 15 lbs and my hubby has lost 12. Thank you SO much! We hope to see you again!

Table for Two: Meat- and Dairy- Free Recipes for Two Review

Table for Two has been a main source of meals for me. Yes, I live alone, with two cats. I don't have a lot of time, space, or money to cook. Enter Table for Two. Possibly Jo's most lifesaving book for vegans strapped for time and space such as I.
There are a lot of vegan cookbooks out there not suitable for new vegans. This is not one of them. Actually, all of Jo's books are suitable for new vegans! It is chock full of information to ease the pain of leaning to cook such as "Basic Cooking Terms", "Cupboard Staples", and even "Kid-Pleasing Recipes". I have to disagree with the latter...they tickle me pink and I'm no kid!
To start, the book has a great "Lay-Flat Binding" cover. Very convenient in the kitchen. It has recipes for every occasion, breakfast, lunch and dinner. I love starting my Sunday's with "Peanut Butter Banana Pancakes". Oh my! So delicious and still manage to stay in the realm of healthy eating! Another favorite for me and my workmates is Peanut Butter & Jelly Muffins. Those always go over well :-) Preparing dinner? Try a side of "Spicy Black-Eyed Pea Salad" or "Warm Dutch Potato Salad". There is a killer recipe for "Thousand Island Dressing" as well. Low on fat, high on taste! "Pan-Handle Chili" is a bi-weekly recipe for me. This recipe even freezes well for those who are actually a Table for One :) Another favorite is "Old World Cabbage Soup". It is JUST like I remember it from the Polish and Jewish restaurants my grandparents took me too as a child. The tomatoey base of this hearty soup really brings me back. Some vegans feel that they will never have another grilled cheese as long as they live. Not so. "Toasted or Grilled Cheeze Sandwiches" are delicious and they actually melt! Imagine! Cheezy goodness with a pickle spear on the side. Remember those days? Anyone can make a bean burrito but be honest...If you are like me it's usually a can of pre-mushed beans plopped into a tortilla. The "Bean Burritos" on page 101 will keep you wanting more...hearty and authentic.
There is an extensive variation to stir-fries with "Stir-Fries Tonight!" "Aunt Rose's Marinara Sauce" is so delicious and simple...you'll never pop the top off another jar of pre-made sauce again. There is an entire section on my favorite...potatoes! and grains and pasta. "Stuffed Sweet Potatoes", "Aunt Shayna's Potato Cakes" (yum yummy!), "Cheezy Macaroni" and "Brown Rice Croquettes" to name a few. Are you ready for dessert? "Schoolyard Oatmeal Cookies", better than mom used to make! A favorite of mine and my non-vegetarian boyfriend is "Maple Banana Custard" topped off with some "Carob Fudge Sauce". Decadent and you'd think a little naughty...but again, this is vegan cooking and the dessert is low fat.
This nowhere near completes the extensive span in this book, but I hope it gives you (vegan and non-vegan, young and old) a better idea of Table For Two. It is a staple in my house and a staple to my health. Enjoy!

Whole Soy Cookbook: 175 Delicious, Nutritious, Easy-to-prepare Recipes Featuring Tofu, Tempeh, And Various Forms of Nature's Healthiest Bean Review

This is a cookbook rarity in that every recipe in here is delicious. I got this book when I was starting out trying to add soy to my diet for better health. I only knew about tofu and I wasn't very creative with it either. This book showed me how to make delicious, healthy versions of foods I really love like Potatoes au Gratin, Soy Milk Pancakes, Soy Cheese Corn Bread, Pizzas and Focaccia, Cream of Asparagus Soup, chowders, chilis, desserts, stews, Kung Pao Tempeh, Tofu Lasagne, manicotti,Cajun dishes and even Tiramisu, just to name a few. This book teaches how to use all the different soy products with easy to follow recipes that will give your menu fresh delights based on foods you already know and love. Each recipe has complete nutritional information. There are addresses and phone numbers for soy product sources and places to write for detailed soy information of a general nature. The author's information about the various soy products is a very understandable and helpful introduction to this often overlooked and misunderstood group of foods. Her personal notes about each recipe help make the dishes seem like they came from a trusted friend's kitchen. The best way to make a change in your diet is to make the change as subtle as you can so that your old habits will not be so tempting. These recipes will make you glad you added soy to your diet and your body and the environment will thank you.

Soy of Cooking: Easy-to-Make Vegetarian, Low-Fat, Fat-Free, and Antioxidant-Rich Gourmet Recipes Review

I am quite fond of this book. The layout is easy to read. The recipes are original and creative, but also include a number of better known foods. Each one contains a complete nutritional analysis. There are, however, no estimated preparation times and about half of the reipes call for a long list of ingredients. For those of you who've wandered through health food stores saying, "what would you do with THAT?" this is a great book. It incorporates some imitation meat flavors and textures and the foods are all hearty. The book contains color photos (always a plus) and is neaty arranged into categories such as apetizers, main courses and desserts. I noticed that no one else made mention of the recipes themselves, so let me do that. . . Colorful guacamole; Especially onion dip; Grilled, marinated portabellos; Spinach balls; Sweet and sour "meatballs"; Veggie nachos; "beef" stew; Split pea curry; 3 Miso soups; Raspberry Walnut dressing; Honey wheat bread; Peanut butter banana squares; Potato casserole; Shepherd's Pie; Jasmine "chicken" TVP; Moussaka; Quiche Lorraine; South-of-the-border scrambler; Tofu in Burgundy Sauce; Cranberry Surprise; Dilly Broccoli Rice; Fettuccine with sun-dried tomato/basil cream sauce; Hawaiian pizza; Pumpkin ravioli; Black forest cake; Cherry Truffles; Fudgy Chocolate Walnut ring and Orange Blosson Pecan cake. Altogether, close to 200 recipes.

Recipes for Dairy-Free Living Review

I bought a copy of this book after reading a newspaper article on the author that also featured some of the recipes included in the book. It's a great addition to my cookbook collection. Although I don't have a problem with dairy foods, I have some friends that can't tolerate them, so I bought this book to help me create a dairy-free dinner party. It was a huge success. I found the recipes easy to prepare and my friends raved about the dishes I served. The biggest "hit" on the menu was the Coconut-Lime Seafood Stew and I had to prove that the Flourless Chocolate Almond Cake contained no dairy ingredients. I found the book to be very informative and liked the fact that I could find all the ingredients at a local grocery store. My "dairy challenged" friends all want a copy of this book, so part of my Christmas shopping is already taken care of!! Thanks Denise

Sea Vegetable Celebration: Recipes Using Ocean Vegetables Review

This book contains very useful information about a variety of sea vegetables, mostly from the North Atlantic (if I recall, this book has strong ties to Maine Sea Coast Veggies). Very basic recipes demonstrating the versatility of sea veggies - from breakfast to dessert. The only books that I enjoy more (demonstrating the usefulness of sea veggies) would be Cathe Olsen's "A Vegetarian Mother's Cookbook...." and "The Garden of Eating".

The Milk-Free Kitchen: Living Well Without Dairy Products Review

As a mother of a child who has recently been diagnosed with milk allergy, I found this book disappointing. Prior to it's purchase, I had spent a considerable amount of time in health food stores becoming familiar with all the substitutes there are for milk - such as rice "milk", soy products, etc.. None of these are used in this book. As the author admits, this book focuses on what a person can eat. Most of these receipes are food dishes that just about anyone who has cooked before would already know can be prepared without milk. For those not so obvious, the author only substitutes water in the place of milk. I could have just as easily look up these receipes in a regular cook book. What I really needed was something that helps me create dishes for my daughter that she loves, but that she can no longer have due to her allergy. What I found most helpful was the section on cheese and have since started giving my daughter goat cheese products to see if she can tolerate this.
To anyone in search of good milk-free receipes, I suggest writing to or going to the web site of those companies who make products to replace dairy, such as soy, rice, almond, and other multi-gran products. They have really saved me.

The Vegan Scoop: 150 Recipes for Dairy-Free Ice Cream that Tastes Better Than the "Real" Thing Review

First let me say the I did learn two things from this book -- saving it from a one-star rating. Those things were:
Arrowroot powder is a nice additive for better texture
Soy creamer can be used for a creamier texture
I have made soy-based ice cream for years now, but have never used either of these ingredients. I would merely take a regular ice cream recipe and substitute soy milk for real milk. These concoctions were good, but lacked a bit in the texture department. Now I have a solution!
As for the rest of this recipe book, it is a single base recipe for the majority with a single ingredient added to make a unique flavor. So, for Espresso ice cream, add 1/4 c espresso to the base recipe. For "Earl Grey", steep the soy milk in 8 bags of Earl Grey -- same base recipe otherwise! Are we to believe that adding a single simple ingredient will transform this recipe into the perfect balance of new flavors? No additional sugar or slightly less sugar would be better? And does every recipe really benefit from EXACTLY 1 Tbls of vanilla extract?
Also, I tried one of the "novelty" flavors -- Chocolate Martini. Next to the recipe is a picture of thick, creamy, dark chocolate ice cream with a frozen black olive on the side. Wow! Amazing that you can get such a wonderful looking ice cream from sugar water and a total of 6 teaspooons of various liquors. Well, you can't! The mix looks like dirty water and the finished product looks like a dirty slushy -- and tastes about the same.
I am going to buy "Lick It!" which is recommended by another reviewer. Sounds more promising. I'll also be experimenting with my own recipes by adding various quantities of soy creamer and arrowroot powder.

So, What Can I Eat Now: Living Without Dairy, Soy, Eggs, and Wheat Review

This is a physically beautiful book with gorgeous, colorful photographs of food on thick semi-gloss pages, like a coffee table book.
The author has the misfortune to be intolerant of soy, eggs, and wheat, which she says are the three most common food allergens. She had to modify the beloved recipes of her Southern (US) childhood to accommodate these food intolerances. Many of the recipes, however, are not modifications of traditional Louisiana foods. I mention that because I don't want you to dismiss this book just because you may not like Southern cooking. There's an international influence here. Good food is good food, regardless of origin.
The recipe instructions are clear and orderly. With the growing awareness of food intolerances, grocers are increasingly stocking the ingredients you'll need for some of these recipes, such as brown rice flour tortillas used for the taco salad. I especially enjoyed her recipe for black-eyed peas; so much better than canned!
You can make most of these meals without specialized equipment. Be aware that one of the recipes requires a slow-cooker, a number need a food processor, and a few use a juicer.
Physicians are lately realizing that gluten allergy and intolerance are much more common than we once believed. If you're so affected, you'll enjoy these gluten-free recipes.
Another appreciated feature is that Ms. Peters provides nutritional analysis for each recipe, such as calorie count, carb and fiber grams, cholesterol content, etc.
There are millions of cookbooks out there. This is one of the few that successfully addresses the needs of people with multiple food allergies.
-Steve Parker, M.D., author of The Advanced Mediterranean Diet: Lose Weight, Feel Better, Live Longer and Conquer Diabetes and Prediabetes: The Low-Carb Mediterranean Diet

The 100 Best Gluten-Free Recipes for Your Vegan Kitchen: Delicious Smoothies, Soups, Salads, Entrees, and Desserts Review

This book is an easy guide to gluten free and vegan eating...
I have always been weary of trying new recipes because I usually stick to what I know..
This book has introduced me to new foods that I normally avoid at the super market!
I absolutely loved the Beet greens and Leeks dish! Who knew to use your beet greens?
I made this for family & friends & they LOVED it!!
Quinoa? My new favorite grain...I love Kelly's introductions to each recipe...
this book was easy to follow & I liked how I could fix them ahead of time & they would still be as delicious the next day...
I highly recommend this book for those trying to elevate their vegan cooking to a new level...
You won't be disappointed!

A Bite of Heaven: Gluten free, Dairy free, Egg free, & Nut free Fused with Conventional recipes to please the whole family Review

I am surprised this book markets itself as a gluten free, dairy free, egg free, nut free cookbook. This cookbook has conventional recipes that include an insert at the end to tell you how you can adapt them to be allergen free. I want a cookbook that has recipes that do NOT include those ingredients!! Example: Coconut coffee cake includes all purpose flour, butter, eggs and cream. Then at the very end of the recipe there is a little box that says: "Diary free use non-dairy margarine and non-dairy milk. Egg free use egg equivalent." How is this a dairy free, etc., cookbook if the recipes are all conventional??? Who wants to open a dairy free cookbook and see a picture of a burger smothered in blue cheese! Not helpful! Not at all what I expected.

Gluten-Free and Vegan Holidays: Celebrating the Year with Simple, Satisfying Recipes and Menus Review

As a vegan who has recently learned I am also Celiac, my mind shifted ahead to the holidays and how much more difficult this would be this year. I was really excited to find this book! I love that the recipes use seasonal ingredients for each holiday and they are easy to find at the local health food store. There is a great section on holiday baking and the pictures are fantastic! I enjoy that these recipes are simple and most don't require a lot of time or massive amounts of prep. There are a lot of recipes in here that I will start to incorporate to my everyday meals! My favorites so far have been the Pumpkin Stew and the Polenta cookies! I am very thankful to have found this book and I highly recommend it!

Celebrating Food: 121 Gluten-Free Recipes for a Healthier You Review

My husband is gluten-intolerant, dairy-free, and egg free, so baked goods were a challenge until we bought Susan's cookbook. The quick breads, zucchini and pumpkin, are stars! They look and taste as good or better than any "normal" breads I've ever had. I love the coconut in the zucchini bread and couldn't keep my hands off. I ate more of it than my husband did, I think! Carrot cake is a favorite at our house, and Susan's recipe is great, moist and flavorful. You want great brownies that taste as good as any you've ever had? Try Susan's recipe! It's way better than any mix you can buy. I can serve these anywhere and nobody knows they're gluten, egg, and dairy free--just decadently delicious! I had trouble with the Pumpkin Pie the first time I tried it, and found out from Susan that rice milk (which I had used in the filling) doesn't thicken! News to me, so I tried again with coconut milk. It was great! Pudding, cooked sauces, etc. should not be made with rice milk--it won't thicken. There is a page "Using Non-Dairy Milk" on Sue's website (also in the book) that tells what kinds of non-dairy milk to use for different recipes (some do better than others in different kinds of recipes). People who use non-dairy milk should review that page before starting to use the book.
Her Crunchy Taco Casserole is surprisingly good! Very flavorful--our whole family has asked for it repeatedly. Recently, my husband made a couple of salads while I was gone. I didn't recognize the recipes, so I asked what they were. Orange Spinach Salad and Coleslaw--from Susan's book, of course. They were both excellent!
The baking mixes also make recipes quick and easy, since most of the dry ingredients are mixed ahead and stored, ready to use. I like being able to make the mixes myself. I just take the list of ingredients to our health food store, come home, mix it up, and am ready to bake anything in the book! The author has posted some recipe corrections, and information on making the baking mixes and using allergy-free ingredients on her website. I recommend folks check that out as they start using the book. I've found Susan's recipes to be very user-friendly with normal ingredients--familiar foods that taste normal! And easy to make! That's a winning combination for people with food allergies. Thanks, Susan!

The Ultimate Allergy-Free Snack Cookbook: Over 100 Kid-Friendly Recipes for the Allergic Child Review

OMG! Finally!! This is the most amazing Allergy-Free Snack Cookbook ever! The information is so helpful and the recipes are tasty and easy!! I have friends who are Vegans and Diabetics who LOVE this book too! The recipes are sugar-free and so flavorful. The "Pizza Party" section is brilliant. The Authors, Judi and Shari, came up such a large variety of toppings (from Avacodos to Sun Dried Tomatoes)! And...the Pizza Crust without wheat is simply amazing! My son has food allergies and I let him pick out recipes from the book to make. He wants the "Oven-Criped Baked Potato Skins" every night! I like the "Everyone's Favorite Oatmeal Raisin Cookies"! The book has over 100 kid-friendly allergen-free snack recipes. I appreciated the guidelines for setting up an allergen-free kitchen too. It was so cute to see a little tidbit on foods that dogs are allergic to called, "Dog Gone Foods"! How helpful! Thank you Zucker twins!!

Great Chefs Cook Vegan (pb) Review

When my copy of Great Chefs Cook Vegan by Linda Long arrived in the mail, at first I didn't know what to do with it. Does this hardcover book belong on my coffee table, or alongside my large collection of cookbooks? Surely, this handsome book doesn't belong anywhere near my kitchen, where it would likely suffer from unintentional splatters and spills.
Linda Long's photographs dazzle, blurring the line between food and art seamlessly. I know of no other vegan cookbook that features the sheer abundance of gorgeous color photography, as every recipe gets its own photograph. I spent two days looking at the photographs and reading the essays by the great chefs before deciding what to make first.
The chefs were asked to present their very best and most inventive vegan recipes -- taking into account presentation, flavor, texture, and the health-giving properties of plant-based food. The results are a dream come true.
Each featured chef has a biography page that precedes the recipes. Accompanied by Long's portraits, these are engaging reads on chefs who have trained at some of the world's best culinary schools, then gone on to acclaimed restaurants, earning the top awards in the field. One may ask: Isn't it all at least slightly intimidating? Thankfully, the well-written and instructive recipes smooth out the complexity suggested by the photographs; and the chefs' stellar backgrounds certainly don't make these dishes off-limits to the cook who needs guidance. Although the recipes do presume the reader will have some interest or experience in the kitchen, I found the instructions easy to follow, and I am by no means a talented chef.
The first recipe I decided to make -- mainly because the photo is so striking -- was David Burke's Vegetable Carousel Torte with Pommes Soufflés Filled With Peas. The torte comprises layered fresh vegetables and mashed potatoes, with a sumptuous basil oil. As with every recipe, there are instructions with how to plate and serve the dish. We like this recipe so much, we've reprinted it in Priscilla Feral's new cookbook, The Best of Vegan Cooking.
Chef Joseph Huber's Chocolate Stuffed Michigan French Toast with Rice Krispies served with Peach-Strawberry Compote is probably the longest titled recipe I've ever encountered -- or attempted to make. But, as you might have guessed, this is the final word in French toast, the best I've ever eaten. The recipe calls for making your own bread, but I purchased a fresh loaf of bakery bread and left it out overnight to dry slightly.
The dish is layered, with two slices of toast stuck together by a melted chocolate sauce, then topped with a fruit compote and maple syrup; the Rice Krispies are used as both stuffing and coating, giving the French toast an unexpected texture and bite. This recipe also appears in The Best of Vegan Cooking. Despite the title, the recipe is actually fairly easy and straightforward.
Also easy is the Curried Cauliflower With Currants and Pine Nuts by Chef Cat Cora. The combination of sweet currants with the pungent curried cauliflower is mouth-watering. I consider myself a major cauliflower fan, and this recipe offers a delicious new way to appreciate this nutritious and versatile vegetable. It tasted even better a day after preparation, once the flavors had time to meld.
The Summer Vegetable Pilaf With Carolina Gold Rice by Chef Anne Quatrano is delightful and another dish that's easy to prepare. Seasoned with marjoram, garlic, onion, and sherry vinegar, the vegetables and rice come to life with nuanced flavor. The butter beans make the dish filling. It's a perfect side dish to any meal, or a light meal all unto itself.
There are so many dishes that I want to try: Cat Cora's Kiwi Parfait made my mouth water just looking at it; and just try uttering the name of Charlie Trotter's Warm Venezuelan Chocolate Cake with Merlot-Infused Cherries, Lemon Bergamot, and Chocolate Gelato without an autonomic mouth-watering response. Then there's Dan Barber's Cauliflower Steak with Quinoa, which sounds (and looks) so inventive and lovely... the list is endless.
Great Chefs Cook Vegan is not your everyday, go-to cookbook -- and that's precisely what makes this tome special, completely out of the ordinary. These recipes are the work of artists who've considered the minute details and properties of food. Linda Long has produced a masterpiece.

Cooking Free : 200Flavorful Recipes for People with Food Allergies and Multiple Food Sensitivi Review

I have tried many allergy cookbooks and this one is by far my favorite. Every recipe that I have tried has been very good. My diet eliminates wheat, dairy, eggs and soy. Cooking Free has many, many recipes without these ingredients. Soy is used some but you can usually substitute something else. Once you gather up the different types of ingredients used you will be set to make many very good things. I was able to find everything at either my local health store or Co-op. I would highly suggest this book to anyone with restrictions in your diet.

Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for All Seasons Review

Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for All Seasons is the fourth edition of Nava's book previously titled Vegetarian Soups for All Seasons. It is essentially the same book as the third edition, but with the color photos added along with the new cover. It is substantially different from the first two editions.
I am a total soup nut so I was very excited to try this one. I hadn't seen any of the previous editions but I'm a big fan of Nava's other cookbooks. This certainly lived up to my expectations. Like all of Nava's cookbooks, the recipes in this book were easy to make, used simple ingredients that I typically have in my pantry, and, most importantly, my family loved them.
The recipes are arranged by seasons, which is a really nice feature since we try to eat local, seasonal foods. It being January when I got the book, I turned straight to the winter soups and found several just perfect for a rainy winter suppers. The first soup I tried was the Three Bean Soup with Brown Rice. Well, actually it was only two bean soup (kidney and cannellini) because I didn't have any frozen green beans. I did have kale though so we still got the green in there. My daughters had bowl after bowl of this hearty tomato-based soup and I ended up with no leftovers for lunch the next day.
The second soup we tried was the Hearty Winter Roots Soup. This was a wonderful mash of potatoes, carrots, rutabagas, and parsnips in a creamy, cheesy soup. Another hit with the family. The third dish we tried was the Vegetarian Goulash--a great "meat" (seitan) and potatoes stew that reminded me of the Sunday dinners my mom made when I was growing up--except without the meat of course.
I can't wait to cook my way through the rest of the seasons. This spring, I'm looking forward to Asparagus and Spinach Soup, Leek and Mushroom Bisque, and Puree of Spring Greens. In the heat of the summer, I can try one of the many cold soups offered like Cream of Lettuce Soup, Classic Gazpacho, or Minted Peach Soup. Next fall (if I can wait that long), I'm dying to try the Baked Onion Soup, New England Clam-less Chowder, and Pumpkin-Apple Soup. In addition to soups, there's a lovely selection of breads, muffins, biscuits and scones. My daughters and I had a blast making Chapatis.
If you love soup or are looking for each meals for your family, this is definitely a good cookbook for you.
