Special Diets for Special Kids, Volumes 1 and 2 Combined: Over 200 REVISED and NEW gluten-free casein-free recipes, plus research on the positive ... ADHD, allergies, celiac disease, and more Review

I have had both volumes of this book in my cupboard for years now, and it is filled with crumbs. Pages are stuck together from spilled parts of delicious recipes that I have made and my family has savored, and I cannot come close to expressing how excited I am that my loose-leaf volumes are now in one gorgeous book! Congratulations, Lisa!
Okay, I don't actually know the author, but I did attend one of her seminars years ago when my son and I were first diagnosed with Celiac Disease, and he had just started to walk. Now that he is almost in third grade, and we have lived on her recipes, all I can say is, I don't know how I managed without this book, and I am thrilled that I didn't have to manage for long, because I found her, and I bought both volumes, and it is worth every penny!
Thank you for the holiday help! What can you do when you don't know how to make latkes without matzah, or apple cake without flour? She does all that and more! Her pumpkin bars are amazingly moist and delicious and good for us all -- and I have one adult male neighbor (who is not on a special diet) who would kill for me to make some more and share with him.
I think it's good food when even though it is gluten and dairy (and soy) free, kids on regular diets (g-d help them!) like it too. I mean, if you could eat ANYTHING and these recipes taste good, this is fantastic! My son and I are not deprived! We are not ashamed to serve this food to others. This is a great book!
I have bought almost every GF book there is, and this is the one I return to over and over again. The "oatmeal" cookies -- fabulous! And if you can't have something that is in one of the recipes, she helps with other substitutions. Like for eggs. Her research is incredible and informative, and more useful than all the sessions and time I put in with a nutritionist I saw after I was diagnosed. This book is an amazing value, a resource, a g-dsend.
Her chocolate cake is right up there with the best. She even deals with recipes for play doh and glue -- stuff you worry that your GF kid will get sick from if s/he is using the kind with gluten. BUY IT, READ IT, USE IT DAILY, LOVE IT!

Eat Well, Feel Well: More Than 150 Delicious Specific Carbohydrate Diet(TM)-Compliant Recipes Review

While I'm happy to have another SCD cookbook to follow, I was unable to give this one 5 stars for two reasons. First, the SCD can be an expensive diet to follow, and some of the recipes in this book make it even more expensive. It includes ingredients that are not available or are costly in your average grocery store, such as truffle oil, macadamia nuts, and Hachiya persimmons. Several different varieties of fresh herbs are required for some recipes. I found that going to get the ingredients for just one recipe put a dent in my grocery budget. This all leads up to the second reason for the 4 stars - it is a bit gourmet/fancier than your average cookbook. So while I don't think this is the best book for the average American family, I do think it is worth having if you are on the SCD. It does contain many simpler recipes as well that I've made successfully and were delicious. I would probably be more comfortable serving recipes from this book on special occasions as compared to other SCD compliant recipes.
Another comment I feel obliged to make is that I am both the patient requiring SCD and the cook in the house, so for me simpler is always better. The ingredients to some recipes require completing a previous recipe, and that can be overwhelming for me at times. If I were healthy and preparing these recipes for someone else, I would probably be less critical. If you enjoy cooking and have the time and energy to do it, this book may well become your all-time favorite. So far, Grain-Free Gourmet still tops my list, but I highly recommend recommend anyone on the SCD add this to their library. You can never have too many cookbooks when your choice of foods is limited.

Healing Foods: Cooking for Celiacs, Colitis, Crohn's and IBS Review

I just received this cookbook today and I am thrilled. I was looking for some inspiration in the kitchen. My family has been doing the SCD since June of 2006 (treating autoimmune disease in myself; ADHD and chronic diarrhea in my son) and we were getting bored with our current recipes. I really needed something to get me excited about cooking again. This book has done just that. The pictures alone are worth the price of the book! It is breathtaking. They make me want to start organizing, planning, and cooking in the kitchen again!!!
And this is quite a hefty book, there are so many recipes in here, I'm having trouble deciding what to try first! One thing I noticed right off the bat, is that there are plenty of recipes that don't depend on almond flour. Sure, there are plenty that do take benefit of this wonderful alternative flour, but not an overabundance of the book like some SCD cookbooks that I have. Also, there are a wide variety of recipes- scrumptious gourmet dinner party looking stuff right down to your basic everyday stuff. There is a nice balanced feel to the range of recipes overall. There are tons of condiment and sauce recipes as well. It looks to be a very versatile cookbook. I'll update this again once we've tried some of the recipes.
I've got some more book ordering to do as this cookbook will definitely find its way into many Yule presents this year for my friends and family.
As for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, SCD, itself (which this cookbook is aligned with):
Elaine Gottschall's book, Breaking The Vicious Cycle, which details the SCD, saved my life. I was lost in chronic pain, brain fog, insane exhaustion-- unable to enjoy life. SCD has given back the joys in my life. I've lost 80 pounds and am at a healthy weight. I have so much more energy to live, not just physical energy, but mental energy as well. I can keep track of what chores need to be done and don't feel overwhelmed or daunted anymore. I can discipline my children and actually be effective. I can follow conversations. I can move and walk and even dance pain free. I feel connected to the world around me instead of lost in fuzzy brain fog. I can enjoy my children, my husband, my friends, my family and my life once again.
My son has been pulled from the brink of Asperger's by this diet. His ADHD has also been slowly fading. Emerging is this sweet, calm, focused, articulate little boy. SCD also gave him the first solid stools of his entire life. His little body is rapidly healing on this diet.
SCD is a healing diet and this cookbook is definitely all about "Healing Foods." If you are looking for a cookbook that will help you reclaim your health, this one is a winner, along with Elaine's book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle, which the author of Healing Foods also highly recommends.
UPDATE: We have tried some of the recipes now, and WOW! Yummy! We have tried the Lamb Koftas, Beef Lasagna, Yogurt Raita, Dijonaise, and Spinach Roulade. My husband, who has been reluctant to eat SCD wise, has been amazed at how great he feels eating this way with me and how yummy the food is! He thought eating healthier would be boring and unappealing. This cookbook has helped me to show him that isn't the case. Our kids love the recipes as well! Now my entire family can enjoy eating the same meals together and I don't have to spend time cooking separate meals. Woohoo! The recipes are also fairly easy and not too fussy. It strikes the perfect balance between gourmet taste and practicality! And we are finding many recipes that will work well given that we are only stage 2 right now (we redid the intro this past summer). This is not one of those cookbooks that is only useful once you are in advanced stages of healing; it has much to offer those still in the early phases. If you only buy one SCD cookbook, I highly recommend this one. It has brought new joy and appreciation to family mealtime!

The Gluten-Free Vegetarian Kitchen: Delicious and Nutritious Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free Dishes Review

In people with celiac disease, gluten (the protein found in wheat, barley, and rye) triggers an autoimmune reaction that causes repeated damage to the villi in the small intestines, resulting in malabsorption of nutrients and painful gastrointestinal side effects. As someone with multiple autoimmune disorders (rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto's disease and suspected celiac disease), I have followed a vegetarian (and occasionally vegan) diet for the past four years in an attempt to try and improve my health. As soon as I heard that Donna Klein was writing a vegetarian gluten-free cookbook, I rushed out to buy a copy.
I am the happy owner of three of Donna Klein's other veg cookbooks, The PDQ (Pretty Darn Quick) Vegetarian Cookbook: 240 Healthy and Easy No-Prep Recipes for Busy Cooks, The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen and Vegan Italiano: Meat-free, Egg-free, Dairy-free Dishes from Sun-Drenched Italy, and have long relied on Ms. Klein's simple and authentically delicious vegetarian cuisine that's (mostly) free of soy (I'm allergic to soy as well). She also includes detailed nutritional info, cultural background, tasty variations, and sample menus.
The Gluten-Free Vegetarian Kitchen begins with a thorough introduction on gluten, where it is found, and what products to avoid, including "hidden" sources of gluten such as dressings, baking powder, spices, low-fat dairy, flavored coffees, and more. If you've recently been diagnosed, this is a very handy guide to lesser-known gluten traps. Thankfully, my town has several excellent supermarkets such as Whole Foods and Central Market that clearly label their gluten-free products and contain a large variety of gluten-free baking products, mixes, and flours. More and more restaurants also provide special gluten-free menus, as one recent estimate places celiac disease at 1 in 133 Americans.
Another wonderful feature of The Gluten-Free Vegetarian Kitchen is that it clearly labels recipes as Lacto-Ovo, Egg-Free, Dairy-Free, and Vegan. As many with celiac disease are also lactose intolerant, this made planning around wheat-free AND dairy-free a breeze. Klein also offers practical vegan substitutions whenever practical, in most cases by omitting the cheese or sour cream called for in the original recipe.
One of the biggest challenges in gluten-free cuisine is the absence of wheat products in baking. Instead of wheat flours (including bread flour, cake flour, whole wheat, semolina, barley, and spelt), expensive gluten-free alternatives (tapioca, quinoa, soy, potato, chickpea, cornmeal, buckwheat, sorghum, rice flours, nut flours and stabilizer gums such as xanthan) are used. Klein does include a chapter on baked goods including quick breads, muffins, and biscuits, but due to my personal tastes, I've steered away from GF breads altogether as they are more labor-intensive, more expensive, and more calorically dense than their wheat counterparts.
Similar to her other vegan cookbooks, The Gluten-Free Vegetarian Kitchen is a breeze to follow; if you can read, you can cook. Ms. Klein's instructions are logical and walk you through each step of the recipe. The included nutritional analysis is much appreciated as I watch my fat and sodium intake very carefully.
And the recipes themselves? Divided into the standard appetizers, soups, salads, entrees, and desserts, Ms. Klein rounds out her selections with breads, pizzas, tacos and sandwiches, side dishes, brunch and egg dishes. What really makes The Gluten-Free Vegetarian Kitchen shine is the inclusion of numerous world cuisines including Asian (Thai, Japanese, Indian), Mexican, Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Italian. The touches of international flair elevate gluten-free vegetarian cuisine from ordinary to extraordinary, and are a pleasant departure from Ms. Klein's normally Mediterranean vegan cuisine.
I was instantly torn between several recipes, but ultimately decided on Caribbean-Style Sweet Potatoes and Black Beans over Brown Rice (p. 125), a saucy blend of orange juice, jerk seasoning, cinnamon, cumin, black beans and cubed sweet potatoes, as my first entr'e. Other personal favorites include Kasha Pilaf with Eggplant, Tomatoes, Basil, and Olives (p. 105), Feta and Ricotta Stuffed Bell Peppers (p. 104), Arborio Rice with Tomatoes and Fresh Mozzarella (p. 119), Chili-Brown Rice Casseroles (p. 100), and Mexican Cornmeal Pie (p. 100).
There is something here to appeal to everyone, from Tex-Mex appetizers such as the zesty Mexican Deviled Eggs (p. 15) and Salsa Cheesecake (p. 24) to filling Indian curries. Sweet tooths (teeth?) rejoice: there are numerous satisfying gluten-free desserts including the delightful No-Cook Apple Pie (p. 176), which features a walnut-and-date crust and a fresh combination of raw apples, raisins, and cinnamon and nutmeg, the delightfully exotic (and easy!) Indonesian-Style Warm Bananas in Cinnamon-Coconut Milk (p. 177), Cardamom Sponge Cake with Strawberry Coulis (p. 182), Hawaiian Coconut Cake (p. 188), and Polenta Chocolate-Currant Cake (p. 193) that will have your non-celiac friends oohing and ahhing over the amazing versatility of gluten-free cuisine.
Overall, the Gluten-Free Vegetarian Kitchen is an empowering tool; it showcases the versatility and creativity of gluten-free vegetarian cuisine rather than emphasizing an already restrictive diet. This is a statement of pride and originality - your gluten-eating carnivorous friends will be amazed at these full-flavored, simple international dishes that make the most of beans, legumes, gluten-free grains, and fresh produce. Who knows? You may even convert a few of your friends after cooking them the delightful recipes found within.

Make it Paleo: Over 200 Grain Free Recipes For Any Occasion Review

Our family has been lucky enough to gain access to all of the recently published Paleo books. I was expecting this one to be more of a straight-up recipe book, but it's so much more! It's a practical application book for living the lifestyle. With tools, ingredient explanation, menus for holidays, and everything in between - this is all you need to get started. Bill & Hayley are straight forward and relaxed about the entire approach and it makes for an easy and entertaining read.
And then, the recipes. They're the BEST Paleo or Primal recipes we've tried, and as bloggers ourselves we've tried tons. Every single one is simple, elegant and brings out the style of standard diet favorites like Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa) and Giada DeLorentis. The photos are unbelievably appetizing. As a gift to any friend or family member, they'd never even know they were missing grains!
The best part about the book for us, though, is knowing that a pair of people with talent by the buckets made this gorgeous masterpiece. This food, the photography, the recipes, the simple, detailed, and thoughtful layout are all better than most of the cookbooks that we have on our shelves. And we're including Julia Child and Alton Brown in that statement. A creative, kind, fun and humble couple put the love that they have for each other into this project they did together and the result was food made of love. Entirely. It's their photography, their food styling, their book design, their recipes. They've shown you who they are with this book, and what they are is amazing.
If you're worried your food won't look or taste as good as those in the books (common in our experience with people who don't professionally write recipes), you needn't worry. Bill & Hayley have been writing Paleo and Primal recipes on their extremely successful site and they bring that experience with them to this book. See our post titled Make It Paleo: Made with love on paleoparents dot com for a full review of half-a-dozen recipes, made by children's hands, photographed by an amateur mother yet still elegant and stunning enough to make Martha Stewart proud.
If you're debating which book to buy, I say hands down this is the one. You can read about the science of why to eat Paleo all over the web, but having a tool this valuable for how to actually do it once you've made the choice is invaluable. For $20 you'll have access to years worth of amazing recipes, on your shelf, kindle or however you choose to store it. We pull out ours at least once every couple of days for inspiration and how-to cooking perfection in our paleo kitchen. I hope you enjoy yours as much as we do!

The Gluten-free Guide to Vegetarian Recipes Review

This is an important book for several reasons. 1) It doesn't rely on eggs, as so many gluten-free books do. Unfortunately, many people with food sensitivities also have problems with eggs (migraines, etc.). 2) It includes a cornucopia of International recipes, such as African, Latin, Greek, etc. as well as the usual European mix (even some Eastern European dishes show up), that should be interesting not only to gluten-free diners, but to omnivorous diners looking for a creative flair, also.

No Wheat No Dairy No Problem: Delicious recipes for people with food allergies/sensitivity and everyone who is looking for healthy alternatives. The cookbook I wish I had Review

I've been eating organic and all natural for a number of years now. However, my junk food loving husband's diet is another issue. No Wheat No Diary No Problem has grown my recipe base and education on healthy nutrition. The delicious factor of the recipes has helped convince my lactose intolerant, food allergy suffering husband that this type of eating is pretty good. This book has helped open the door in my household to healthier options for my spouse. I cannot thank Lauren enough.

Overcoming Candida: The Ultimate Cookery Guide Review

For most people, being diagnosed with candidiasis is like receiving a "sentence" of impending doom to eat bland, flavorless, monotonous foods in order to rid our bodies of the overgrowth of the naturally-occuring bacteria called candida albicans, which many doctors believe is the root cause of many debilitating diseases. For many years, it seems, one would need to endure 6 weeks to 6 months of this monotonous diet in order to regain proper balance between these "bad" bacterias and the "good" bacterias in our intestines - and eventually regain our health and stamina. There has always been a need for recipes to enhance the variety and enjoyment of eating that so many of us desire in order to inspire us to stay on any new diet. Xandria Williams not ONLY provides us with a potpourri of these recipes, but gives a very concise and accurate description of the "Yeast Syndrome", what causes it, what the known symptoms are, and what to do to prevent it in the future. Her writing includes many clinical descriptions, however, she makes all of it VERY easy to understand. The lists of foods to avoid, as well as alternatives to those foods was a huge help for me. Many books just list foods to avoid......with no "alternatives" that would closely replace those foods in our daily diet. I recommend this book to anyone who needs to know more about coping with candidiasis and loves to cook.

Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet: The Grain-Free, Lactose-Free, Sugar-Free Solution to IBD, Celiac Disease, Autism, Cystic Fibrosis, and Other Health Conditions (Healthy Living Cookbooks) Review

This is my first review but I had to write one because this book is fantastic! I have made five recipes in the past five days and my 5 year old son (with severe ulcerative colitis) has loved every single one (the rest of the family has loved the food too)! I own every SCD cookbook and this one seems to have the most recipes that are winners. So far, we have made: a chinese chicken dish (actually tastes like chinese chicken but without soy sauce- amazing); vietnamese pork (same); almond puff (tastes like cake!); chili-lime crackers (tastes like mild cheez-its!); and shortbread (buttery and tasty). We are going to keep trying recipes but love this cookbook and wanted to post this review while ordering another copy for my son's grandmom. Well worth adding to your library.

The Picture Cookbook, No-Cook Recipes for the Special Chef Review

I think this book is an absolutely fabulous idea but found the execution in this case to be very confusing. I purchased it for a special needs friend for Christmas but felt it would frustrate way more than liberate. I can tell a lot of thought has gone into it, but there are SO many pictures and symbols. A spiral binding would be a huge improvement so it would at least lay flat while the person tries to follow the instructions, but wrestling with the pages and the logic is too much to expect. Just doesn't fill the bill; I'll be returning it.

The Gluten-Free Vegan: 150 Delicious Gluten-Free, Animal-Free Recipes Review

If you have celiac and you have ever tried to go vegan, you have probably woken up several days later, laughing hysterically: "There's nothing to eat!"
Not so: mayonnaise, meatloaf, brownies--it's all here.
The author also limits recipes that use corn, soy, and sugar, resulting in food that is low glycemic index, allergy-free, vegan and gluten-free. Perfect, perfect, perfect.
Well, almost: many of the recipes have long ingredient lists, but they won't take forever, and they include recipes that can be cooked a month in advance and then frozen. (Your mother should have taught you not to freeze tomatoes.)
My only real complaint is the book's discussion of oats: the author says that oats don't have gluten, and so they are safe. Actually, oats contain avenin, which is just a different form of gluten; in a test tube, intestinal samples have an immune reaction to avenin; but, in live people, there are many fewer anti-gliadin antibodies (the bad stuff) in diagnosed celiacs who eat oats.
The problem is, some celiacs do fine on oats--and some don't. It's difficult to tell until the person in question starts to get sick again.
However, with that one caveat, this cookbook is way cool, and very, very useful. If you are willing to spend any time in the kitchen at all, this is well worth picking up.

Nearly Normal Cooking For Gluten-Free Eating: A Fresh Approach to Cooking and Living Without Wheat or Gluten Review

This cookbook is a breath of fresh air for me and for my family! The recipes are clear, realistic, and uncomplicated. No weird ingredients to chase after. And her flour mixture makes recipes taste "normal." It's been fun to try new things, and my friends have loved making recipes we can all enjoy.
Just as valuable as the recipes are her comments about her experiences and the good humor she brings to daily life as a celiac. She shares just the right balance of honesty and encouragement. The explanations at the front of the book about celiac desease, do's and don'ts, references, etc. are good for synthesizing what I already knew and for sharing with friends and family so they can understand too. Great cookbook!
Happy Celiac Cook

Feast Without Yeast Review

Recently, I decided to order 3 Candida Albicans books from Amazon to know what could still be "wrong" with my anti-candida diet. Feast Without Yeast appeared to me at first to be uninteresting. It takes its root in curing Autism, which is not what I was looking for. Moreover the book itself is less attractive, being less stylized and professionnally typesetted than the others. Many recipes call for potatoes or meat, all things that I had left behind me long ago. And isn't potatoe a carbohydrate of the sort that should be banished from an anti-candida diet?? Well these were my first thoughts. So I began with the other books... After a month or so practicing the others' diet, nothing had changed and the sky was still very stormy to me. So I finally came back to read this Feast Without Yeast book lurking on my shelf. Wow! In just a night I changed my mind completely. This guy (Dr. Bruce Semon) was presenting a UNIFIED, RIGOROUS and NON-CONTRADICTORY explanation of why Candida is making us so bad. And this understanding makes it possible to know which of our habits may trigger this beast. Moreover, it explains why this damned piece of food, being it coffee or chocolate, beloved and desired more than anything else on earth, even gold, is in fact killing us. Because you need pretty convincing arguments to throw them out of your life. It presents a 4 stages diet, which means that you start progressively to eliminate more and more food, until you feel ok. That is a very amenable and realistic diet plan, because no one on this planet can stop eating all those lovely food at once. And in general, being presented a very restrictive diet, you don't know where to start at first. Well this book tells it all. ALL. As a final remark, let me say that the book, even if not pretty, is in fact very usable. The recipes are well categorized and the index at the end of the book is VERY comprehensive. This makes it easy to find a recipe targeted to some particular ingredient. Also, the recipes are well explained and taste relatively good given the tremendous restrictions imposed. Most of them are in fact vegetarian. And most importantly, it works! But be warned: it is not an easy diet. It is a life-changing diet, and changing one's life is never an easy endeavor. But that also is explained by Dr. Semon. 5 stars.

Grain-Free Gourmet Review

I have this cookbook as well as Breaking the Vicious Cycle, Lucy's SCD Cookbook, and Eat Well Feel Well. This one is my favorite. I love "The World's Best Meat Sauce", which I make thick as recommended for a sloppy joe spooned over the "Basic Bread" recipe. Fantastic! The apple galette disappeared immediately among a group of non-SCD dieters. I also like the cole slaw, and the cappuccino ice cream is fabulous!
I also have Eat Well Feel Well, but find the recipes are expensive and require ingredients not typical even in the SCD kitchen. Since the SCD can be expensive on its own, I have found that I've used that book very rarely. With the exception of nut flours and standard SCD staples, most ingredients used in Grain Free Gourment are reasonably priced and easily located in your neighborhood supermarket. The recipes even include the standard rather than SCD ingredients, so this book will remain a favorite even if strict adherence to SCD is no longer necessary. Thank you Jodi and Jenny for quality recipes that are easy to follow, kitchen tested, and sure to please even non-SCDers. This is a lovely cookbook with beautiful photos. It would be a welcome addition in every SCD kitchen.
