American Heart Association Quick & Easy Cookbook: More Than 200 Healthful Recipes You Can Make in Minutes Review

I have to give it 4 stars because it doesn't have any pictures. I am basically a picture person - I like to see what the end result should look like.
I have tried other low fat cook books before and have been alittle disappointed with them all. I found only a few recipes that I ended up liking and still occasionally use. I tried have tried 5 recipes from this book so far, and so far they have been very good.
The recipes have plenty of seasoning in them so they don't taste bland. And some of the recipes are common sense ones that use the old rule of substitution ie - instead of oil use apple sauce, instead of sour cream use fat free yogurt etc.
In any case this book is definately a good buy at a good price. I would definately recommend it.

Free for All Cooking: 150 Easy Gluten-Free, Allergy-Friendly Recipes the Whole Family Can Enjoy Review

A big "Thank you" to Jules for writing this cookbook, and then for having the courage to give it a title that represents the content. As a physician who specializes in food allergies and intolerances I know that many, many people have reactions to multiple foods, and I see more every day. Gluten is getting all of the attention, but the other foods are just as important. There are very few cookbooks available to people with multiple food reactions. I was thrilled when I learned that Jules, an accomplished gluten free author, had broadened her scope and written this book.
I highly recommend "Free for All Cooking" to my patients and to anyone who has a reaction to dairy, gluten, eggs, soy and/or nuts. I do not think that you will be disappointed.

The Milk-Free Kitchen: Living Well Without Dairy Products Review

As a mother of a child who has recently been diagnosed with milk allergy, I found this book disappointing. Prior to it's purchase, I had spent a considerable amount of time in health food stores becoming familiar with all the substitutes there are for milk - such as rice "milk", soy products, etc.. None of these are used in this book. As the author admits, this book focuses on what a person can eat. Most of these receipes are food dishes that just about anyone who has cooked before would already know can be prepared without milk. For those not so obvious, the author only substitutes water in the place of milk. I could have just as easily look up these receipes in a regular cook book. What I really needed was something that helps me create dishes for my daughter that she loves, but that she can no longer have due to her allergy. What I found most helpful was the section on cheese and have since started giving my daughter goat cheese products to see if she can tolerate this.
To anyone in search of good milk-free receipes, I suggest writing to or going to the web site of those companies who make products to replace dairy, such as soy, rice, almond, and other multi-gran products. They have really saved me.

The Juiceman's Power of Juicing: Delicious Juice Recipes for Energy, Health, Weight Loss, and Relief from Scores of Common Ailments Review

This is a nice, straight forward juicing book that offers some "extras." It's simple, but it has an extensive array of recipes and leaves no stone unturned.
There's a section on produce that tells the reader what each item is good for (which vitamins and minerals it contains) and how to buy and store them.
The "Juiceman" also includes a crash course in all the nutrients we need to be healthy, WHAT we need them for, and in which juices we can find them in.
At the end of the book, the author includes a Q&A section and tips and points on how to make juicing an integral part of your life and what to eat to compliment a diet chock full of fresh juices.
All in all, this is a great book. It may not appeal to some who are in search of something a little more fancy, with a more complex layout. But, everything considered, it's a sure bet.

Gluten-Free and Vegan Holidays: Celebrating the Year with Simple, Satisfying Recipes and Menus Review

As a vegan who has recently learned I am also Celiac, my mind shifted ahead to the holidays and how much more difficult this would be this year. I was really excited to find this book! I love that the recipes use seasonal ingredients for each holiday and they are easy to find at the local health food store. There is a great section on holiday baking and the pictures are fantastic! I enjoy that these recipes are simple and most don't require a lot of time or massive amounts of prep. There are a lot of recipes in here that I will start to incorporate to my everyday meals! My favorites so far have been the Pumpkin Stew and the Polenta cookies! I am very thankful to have found this book and I highly recommend it!

The Ultimate Allergy-Free Snack Cookbook: Over 100 Kid-Friendly Recipes for the Allergic Child Review

OMG! Finally!! This is the most amazing Allergy-Free Snack Cookbook ever! The information is so helpful and the recipes are tasty and easy!! I have friends who are Vegans and Diabetics who LOVE this book too! The recipes are sugar-free and so flavorful. The "Pizza Party" section is brilliant. The Authors, Judi and Shari, came up such a large variety of toppings (from Avacodos to Sun Dried Tomatoes)! And...the Pizza Crust without wheat is simply amazing! My son has food allergies and I let him pick out recipes from the book to make. He wants the "Oven-Criped Baked Potato Skins" every night! I like the "Everyone's Favorite Oatmeal Raisin Cookies"! The book has over 100 kid-friendly allergen-free snack recipes. I appreciated the guidelines for setting up an allergen-free kitchen too. It was so cute to see a little tidbit on foods that dogs are allergic to called, "Dog Gone Foods"! How helpful! Thank you Zucker twins!!

Cooking Free : 200Flavorful Recipes for People with Food Allergies and Multiple Food Sensitivi Review

I have tried many allergy cookbooks and this one is by far my favorite. Every recipe that I have tried has been very good. My diet eliminates wheat, dairy, eggs and soy. Cooking Free has many, many recipes without these ingredients. Soy is used some but you can usually substitute something else. Once you gather up the different types of ingredients used you will be set to make many very good things. I was able to find everything at either my local health store or Co-op. I would highly suggest this book to anyone with restrictions in your diet.

Japanese Cooking: Contemporary & Traditional Review

This is a great cookbook. As a Japanese-American and a vegan, this is by far the best vegetarian japanese cookbook I've come across.
The veg-anized recipies in this book mimic the real thing--the Japanese curry out of this cookbook tastes the same as I remember the beef/pork/chicken version tasting. The ramen recipe is as close to the real thing as I can imagine, and I'm not referring to the 6 for a dollar insta-packs from the supermarket.
The author includes traditional and modern foods, and recipes which are tradionally vegetarian and not. Most of the ingredients can be bought at your local supermarket. This is the book to get for healthy, completely vegetarian Japanse food.

Sophie-Safe Cooking: A Collection of Family Friendly Recipes that are Free of Milk, Eggs, Wheat, Soy, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Fish and Shellfish Review

The whimsical illustration on the cover of Sophie-Safe Cooking is the perfect representation of its contents. Simple, down-home recipes, created from a mother's love. There is just one thing missing...okay, there are eight things missing...milk, eggs, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. Emily Hendrix authored this delightful collection from the tasty meals and treats she created for her food allergic child, Sophie.
So what's left? Admittedly, I am guessing that Emily's pantry is sparse, with large bags containing a handful of ingredients. Yet, what is in it gets some seriously creative mileage. I like that Emily uses only easy to find, everyday ingredients. Though natural foods and spices are her focus, trips to an expensive specialty grocer (i.e. Whole Foods) are completely unnecessary when following her recipes. Apple cider vinegar is about as exotic as it gets.
Sophie-Safe Cooking houses over 100 recipes very neatly laid out, one per page. Most of the recipes contain less than ten ingredients (always a top feature for me) and for the most part the directions are just a few straightforward sentences. Emily adds in helpful, but brief, notes with several of the recipes. Most of the recipes are Sophie-Safe versions of familiar family favorites, such as Granny's Meatloaf, Shepherd's Pie, and Chocolate Cupcakes (frosted of course!). While a few unique concepts caught my eye, like the Whipped Pinto Beans, Zucchini Brownies, and Taco Vinaigrette. My one and only complaint: the size is handy (6 x 9"), but it is difficult to reference while cooking without a stand to hold the book open.
It should be noted that many of the baked goods rely heavily on oat flour. For those who may have gluten concerns with oats, but would like the benefits of Emily's recipes, Gifts of Nature produces certified gluten-free oats. Purchasing oat flour is a convenience, but unnecessary. Just grind up oats in a blender, food processor, or my favorite, the spice grinder until it becomes flour.
Speaking of oats, the first recipe I trialed from Sophie-Safe Cooking was the Oatmeal Muffins. They were delicious, and gone in minutes! I like that most of Emily's baked goods are somewhat hearty, yet wonderfully sweet and tasty for kids and adults alike. At first I was unsure if the serving-size was correct, but I then realized that they are portioned for little ones. My husband and I each downed two muffins slathered with peanut butter (no peanut allergies in our house), without a pang of guilt.

Go Dairy Free: The Guide and Cookbook for Milk Allergies, Lactose Intolerance, and Casein-Free Living Review

It is rare that within a 24 hour period I make four recipes from one cookbook, let alone a newly acquired one. But Go Dairy Free, by Alisa Marie Fleming, is so fantastic, that I needed to dig in immediately. And then I couldn't stop!
This is a must-have cookbook for anyone looking to expand their recipe repertoire, regardless of whether you want or need to go dairy-free. Besides fabulous sounding recipes, the book is a wealth of information. First of all, the recipe/allergy index at the back of the book is phenomenal. Listed according to categories (dairy alternatives, breakfast to brunch, baking bread, sips & smoothies among others), each section tells you whether the recipe is vegan, egg-free, soy-free, gluten-free, wheat-free, nut-free and/or peanut-free. This feature alone is worth the very reasonable price of the book (I am not an affiiliate seller for this book - just very pleased!). But I can't stop there. One of the other great features of the book is the section that talks about calcium. How many of us, when friends and/or family realize we're not eating dairy ask us where we'll get our calcium from?! Right? You know what I'm talking about. The author of Go Dairy Free explores this in depth, helping the reader understand how much calcium one really needs and explaining how calcium needs can be met without eating dairy.
My first foray into the book started with a recipe for Creamy Pesto-Inspired Pasta. If I hadn't cooked the dish with my own two hands, I never would've known it wasn't a creamy dairy-filled parmesan sauce. And to boot, it was unbelievably easy. Only thing is, I should've doubled the recipe. We practically licked our plates!
It didn't need anything more to improve the taste, but I decided to try the author's Easy Parmesan Substitute. Three ingredients. Delicious. A great dairy-free alternative to parmesan cheese which we sprinkled over the pasta. Delish. I'm hooked!
This morning, I made one of the author's smoothie recipes. Again, dairy-free, delicious, full of omega 3's (flaxseeds) and anti-oxidants (blueberries), and spinach (iron). Yup, you read that right. Spinach. But you couldn't even tell, not by the color of the smoothie (blueish purple) or by the taste which was mostly dominated by the banana and blueberries.
This afternoon I decided to try my hand at Go Dairy Free's Five Minute Nachos. I happened to have some homemade corn tortillas, though it would've worked just as well with store-bought corn tortilla chips. The sauce literally took five minutes plus two minutes for assembling the ingredients. Still, that's amazing, don't you think? And the finished product was fed to four hungry musicians who had just finished a two hour intense rehearsal. I didn't tell them they were eating dairy-free nachos. I just waited for the reaction. They were wowed! We all loved it and none of us could believe that the sauce had no cheese in it.
I delicately plopped refried beans over the chips, then drizzled the cheesy sauce over the whole thing, then threw it in the oven to warm it for about two minutes. It was sensational.
Alisa - I hope you're reading this review. I am crazy about this cookbook. Thank you so much for all of your hard work in pulling together so many fantastic recipes and providing invaluble information that will help me explore dairy-free cooking. Not only that, I have Celiac Disease and am completely gluten-free - this cookbook has recipes that are totally easy to make gluten-free! What a find!

The Allergen-Free Baker's Handbook Review

Having to switch to gluten free baking was challenging enough, but I have to avoid dairy, nuts and nut flours, soy, too. Baked goods have tried my patience for the past 8.5 years. Because my child has sensitivity to soy, I can't buy a lot of GFCF mixes that are on the market. And many years I lost count of the absolute flops that went straight to the trash can. GFCF baked goods can be gritty and gummy, especially when you are avoiding eggs, too. (Because we rotate eggs, sometimes I need to bake without them.)
The demands of a child with autism monopolized my time, and I have, over the years, found a cake mix, a brownie mix and a pancake mix that I like and have stuck with them, and that's pretty much it.
Gluten free flours, xanthan gum, and all the "tricks" to GFCFSFEF+++ baking are expensive. They take up a lot of space in kitchen cupboards. Spending the money and time to try a recipe only to have turn out gritty or gummy is frustrating, and I admit, I gave up in a big way. (Gluten was the first big allergen that we removed 8.5 years ago, and I remember it being so very challenging at the time. Little did I know I'd have to remove a lot more and that I would envy folks who are simply gluten free -- I think that would be so easy!)
I simply never understood the science to baking GFCFSFEF+++ breads, cookies, cakes and other baked goods. I didn't have the time or the background to try to figure it out.
Until now. Now, I'm getting an education about the alchemy of baking without traditional baking ingredients like milk, wheat and eggs: The Allergen-Free Baker's Handbook, How To Bake without Gluten, Wheat, Dairy, Eggs, Soy, Peanuts, Tree nuts, and Sesame by Cybele Pascal. Cybele Pascal is a chef who happens to be the mother of a child with severe food allergies. She went to work adapting all of our favorite baked items and put her collection of successes into a beautiful cookbook. And yes, there are color photos of some of the recipes (I like photos!).
I. Adore. This. Cookbook! This book is not just a collection of recipes. Instead, Pascal takes the time to teach me about baking allergen free with almost the same restrictions we have at my house. The section called, "The Dry Goods Pantry" in Chapter 1, Stocking your Allergen-Free Pantry, combined with all of Chapter 2, "How To Bake Allergen-Free" provide a mini-baking school, and I would like these pages + the resource section in the back of the book available in a purse sized tri-fold to take with me to the grocery store. Pascal offers suggestions for replacing eggs, dairy, and wheat flour that have me looking through "regular" cookbooks with a new perspective.
I wish I'd had this cookbook nine years ago.
