Local Bounty: Vegan Seasonal Recipes Review

If you are seeking a complete cookbook to cooking vegan, then you may want to add another to your collection, but if you are seeking easy yet imaginative recipes that will help you add more seasonal produce to your diet, then you have hit the mark.
The author begins with a good primer, which includes an introduction to the various vegetable "families," solid explanations of various cooking techniques (at last, I understand braising!), and a quick chart on basic seasonings to use (combinations of spices, herbs, and basic pantry items) to create certain ethnic flavors. The latter may have been brief, but I had never seen this in a cookbook prior, and plan to reference it in the future.
The chapters/sections are of course broken down by season, each with a brief one-page intro that lists out the correlating in-season items. Always a useful thing to have on hand! The recipes are refreshingly simple: not too many ingredients, brief yet thorough instructions, just one recipe per page with room for notes, and good sized print for those of us who are visually impaired.
Keep in mind; this cookbook is really about vegetables and fruits, so it isn't filled with grain and pasta dishes, tofu, or meat substitutes. As someone who cares more about adding more of the green and fibrous stuff to my daily regimen than following a particular diet (beyond dairy-free of course!), this was a refreshing change from your average vegan or vegetarian cookbook. I also liked that just a handful of recipes used soy.
Local Bounty has soups, sauces, salads, and hearty "sides" aplenty. For an extra treat, there are some sweet recipes that randomly appear as bonuses throughout the book. Those who think that vegan desserts should use fruit, unrefined sweeteners, and whole grain flours for a slightly healthier reward, will be doubly pleased.
Really, I was about to start dog-earing the pages for recipes to trial, but I would make less of a mess dog-earing the pages I don't want to make! This is definitely a go to book for when I have gone out on a limb and purchased a "new-to-me" in-season ingredient or an abundance of an old favorite that has been stockpiled from overflowing local farmers, or when I just crave some simple vegetable and fruit dishes ... which is just about every day!

The Lazy Gourmet: Over 200 Seven-Ingredient Recipes (Cooking Light) Review

I originally purchased this at KMart years ago. There are so many great recipes - my most favorite being the spinach/vegetable lasagne. THAT recipe alone is worth the cost of the book.
In 2008, I misplaced my original book and immediately ordered another from amazon. THAT is how much I love this book - can't be without it. When I find my original book, I will pass along one book to my cooking brother-in-law.
If you get this book, you will love it as much as I do. It's broken down by segment - meats, meatless, soup, appetizers, etc. There's just a ton of recipes! I usually Post-It note my faves - I'd say I have at least 50 tags on this book!!!

My gourmet cooking sister in NJ told me she was cleaning out old cookbooks and recipes in preparation for a retirement move. Imagine her surprise when a cookbook arrived as a birthday gift in April. She thought I was a little nuts. But after reading and trying it she decided it was amazing and a keeper. Simple, healthy and delicious. I can't believe how wonderful and easy the after dinner salad is! Who knew that switching to white balsamic would make such a difference. I've been trying to eat Mediterranean - more fruits and vegetables - and this is helping. Our business is giving this book to clients as a healthy birthday gift this year.

I was very excited to see this book come out. It's got some practical advice and some delicious recipes. This book is a must-have for anyone who is even considering cooking a few things. This book starred at our beach house this summer. Although I've only made two recipes so far, others have also cooked from it with great success. The recipes are simple and the ingredients are often on the shelf or easily found. at the local grocery. Many recipes are reminicent of comfort foods and camping trips, but current ingredients are used as well. Good organization, nice recommended menus, clear instructions, a pleasant read. I jotted down five recipes to tide me over until I could get home to order the book.

Lucid Food: Cooking for an Eco-Conscious Life Review

My assessment of "Lucid Food" is two-fold, both as a cookbook and as a book-book. As a cookbook it has some inspiring recipes and great suggestions, but recipes like "Persian Stuffed Dumpling Squash with Rose Petals" all but defeat any locavore tendencies, and have some far-fetched, hard to secure ingredients. I love any cookbook organized by season though, and am a sucker for beautiful photography, both of which "Lucid Food" offers. If you are willing to improvise, feel secure in the kitchen, and are interested in some imaginative recipes it is a good read.
As a traditional book I'm highly impressed with the depth of knowledge, clear manner in which is is conveyed, and most of all how concise the author was able to be when discussing sometimes complicated food issues. Within 2 pages Shafia is able to both shed light on some of the issues with 'traditional' white sugar and offer a myriad of solutions/alternatives. She is able, in only a few paragraphs, to discuss why you should seek out organic bananas, discuss their seemingly imminent demise, genetic diversity, and offer alternatives. While I used to have a very good memory for irrelevant data, like page numbers for certain information in books, I've all but lost that in distraction with 'real life'. When discussing "Lucid Food" with my husband, I was able to recall page numbers for him for information that struck me - a testament to the quality of information and intriguing presentation.
If you want good food-related info, enjoy food-porn photography, or seek a new diverse set of recipes I say check "Lucid Food".

This is the cook book for everyone who is too busy or too tired to plan meals and cook. All the work has been done for you. This book has everything you need to have on hand, what to buy at the store and an easy to follow work plan. Also, the recipes in this book are low in fat, with little or no salt added. I have tried almost everything in this book and have come to enjoy even some things I didn't think I was going to like. The only thing missing is the nutritional breakdown, (calories, carbohydrates, etc.) I have now bought almost every book that Marian Burros has written. This one is the best. I'm on my second copy, I wore out the first one!

What's-For-Dinner Cookbook: A Year-Long Program of Balanced Dinners for Your Family Review

I have had this book for about 3 months now, so far using the "Winter" recipes.
The concept is good: Gather a year's worth of recipes together, split them up into seasonal sections, and create shopping lists. Give advance notice for the next day's meals, and prepare ingredients ahead of time. For someone who has a difficult time menu planning, I thought this book would be my answer.
But the directions are not so good. Some directions will have you cook pork chops until you could resole your shoes with them. Some will tell you to bring the ingredients of a soup to a boil, but omit the part about adding water. Some will include ingredients, yet never tell you what to do with them. Some directions will tell you an important step, but only at the end of the recipe, when it's too late. Some have incorrect cooking times, leading to undercooked/overcooked meals.
Then there's the cream-of-something soup recipes. 43 cans for the year. 18 cans of cream-of-something for the Spring section alone! Before deciding on the week's recipes, I scan the ingredients for C-o-?'s, and cross those recipes right off the list.
Of course taste is subjective. Maybe you would like a dish with cream-of-mushroom, a pint of sour cream, 2 cups of cheese, 1/2 cup of butter and some hash brown potatoes. It was nearly deadly for my family. Gag reflex for my 3.5 year old, and doubled-over gas-filled intestinal pain for us.
Some recipes are unnecessary for a busy family. My first go at the book was Sloppy Joes with Stovetop Baked Beans. In the interest of time and money, I skipped the ingredient list and bought a can of Sloppy Joe mix and a can of Baked Beans.
Some recipes are good. We liked "Mom's" Meat Loaf and Mexican Lasagna for instance.
If you get this book: read, re-read, re-re-read the recipes and make sure you make notes and fix the omissions and errors before starting. Use your own common cooking sense: if the recipe calls for you to cook chicken breasts, stuffed with cheese and topped with spaghetti sauce, for 1 hour, you might want to adjust that a bit so you don't end up with dried-out, tasteless boiled chicken with cheese melted right out of it, sitting in watery spaghetti sauce. And if you like cream-of-whatever soup, then get your casserole dish ready... you're going to need it.
