The Good Carb Cookbook: Secrets of Eating Low on the Glycemic Index Review

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I wish I could give a copy to everyone I know. Not only are the recipes the most delicious healthy foods we've ever made, but Sandra Woodruff explains the nutritional and health reasons for eating good carbs in simple, easy-to-understand language. She emphasizes moderation. Her recipes are followed by nutritional information, including whether they are extremely low GI, low GI, or moderate GI.
The first third of the book is all information you need to know about why traditional fat-free eating isn't making people thinner or healthier, but fatter and unhealthier. For the past 20 years, the food industry has been touting fat-free this and fat-free that..."eat pretzels, gummi bears, eat fat-free, and you'll be fat-free". It's nonsense.
Woodruff explains how and why to eat low on the Glycemic Index. She gives you tons of ideas for low GI breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. She includes low GI options for eating out at nearly every possible type of restaurant- Italian, Indian, Thai- you name it. She also gives a few examples of real people, their situations, and how they changed their health by eating low GI. Not only does this book give you sound nutritional advice (the author is a Registered Dietician), but she also includes over 200 phenomenally delicious recipes.
Eat wholesome real foods, watch what kinds of fats you cook with, exercise, and you will lose weight. Most importantly, though- YOUR BODY WILL LOVE YOU. And your doctor will be thrilled! My husband, who was already exercising regularly, has lost 20 lbs in 6 weeks just by changing to eating low on the Glycemic Index- "Good Carbs". I have also lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks by changing my diet and including exercise. Changing our diet has giving us so much more energy. We feel fantastic.
Do yourself a favor and pick up this book! I researched all the low-carb, no-carb, low-sugar, Zone, Busters, etc... books ... and decided after reading all the information and reviews, to purchase this one. I am so glad I did! You will be too. You owe yourself an energetic, long life. BUY THIS BOOK.

The Vegetarian Low-Carb Diet: The Fast, No-Hunger Weightloss Diet for Vegetarians Review

While I'm neither a vegetarian or a vegan, I did want to have more vegetables in my low carb high protein diet. Rose Elliot did a great job on this book. The book is well balanced with readable information, very useful quick reference charts, menus, recipes, a few encouraging testimonies along the way. She does provide vegan alternatives to the lacto-vegetarian choices. And, best of all, it is an easy inexpensive way to lose weight on a low carb diet.
Her commonsense approach to recipes means you can make them with food typically on hand and quickly. Typically, most of the prep work can be done in a few minutes. And, you can expand on them as you learn the basic techniques. As I've worked my way through the book, one of my favorite recipes is her spaghetti squash using cream cheese with spices.
It literally only takes ten minutes to steam the squash in the microwave then fold in the cheese with spices. You can use already prepared cheese with herbs and spice mixes from the store. Or, you can use Philadelphia cream cheese and have your own ethnic flavors from Mexican to Indian, to Italian Garlic-Parmesan etc. And, you can use almost any steamed vegetable that has been thin sliced. It is a nice break from tomato sauces and there are never any leftovers.
This book is definitely a keeper!

I just found out I have high cholesterol and was upset at the idea of giving up foods that I love to eat. But, this book has recipes for most of my favorite foods. I bought several other low-cholesterol cookbooks, but I use this one the most often. There are recipes for everything and they're easy to do. I would recommend this book to anyone!

200 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes: Healthy Dinners That Are Ready When You Are Review

Dana Carpender has made a serious study of adapting classic recipes from around the world to work with modern low carb diets. In this latest offering, 200 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes, she proves once again that you don't need refined grains and sugars to enjoy healthful, satisfying food - no matter your culinary traditions or meat of preference. The key is quality ingredients, simply prepared.Dana Carpender is a believer in keeping it simple and freshly prepared whenever possible. None of the ingredients were hard to find at my supermarket except perhaps the low-carb imitation honey that shows up in a few recipes. Of the dozen or so main dish recipes I tested in 200 LCSCR I can honestly say that seven were big hits with my family, a few were just okay and just one was bad. All of them cooked on time and just as predicted. There were some very satisfying desserts toward the end, with several variations on cheesecakes and custards that turn out splendidly in my slow cooker. Although I do not normally have a use for appetizer recipes, there is even a section for that - which contains an outstanding hot artichoke dip.
I am impressed with the author's diligence in keeping most recipes under 10 grams of net carbs per serving. Dana really does stick to the universal "rules" of low carb dieting; lots of veggies and meats, occasional artificial sweetening, a sprinkling of fruits now and then and a bare representation of grains and sugars -- and only when absolutely necessary for flavor, never as filler. She is good at innovating more nutritious subs for common starchy side dish ingredients; fauxtatoes (cauliflower) and mashed turnips are big players at her low carb table. Eat the 200 LCSCR way and you will probably have better, more varied natural nutrition than ever before in your typical American diet.
The recipes for lc condiments & sauces are a big bonus to those of us who suffer from sticker shock at the supermarket's low carb pricing practices. Readers of her other lc recipe books may find some of these items familiar, but hey, it is convenient to have them all in one place. And as for convenience, well...slow cooking is the essence of convenience to modern time-challenged dieters.
Did I make it sound as if this book is one of the best kept secrets for low carbers? I hope so, because it is.
-Andrea, aka Merribelle.

Saving Dinner the Low-Carb Way: Healthy Menus, Recipes, and the Shopping Lists That Will Keep the Whole Family at the Dinner Table Review

Making the adjustment to low carb has meant learning a whole new way to cook. Before I discovered this book, other recipes I've tried have been bland or required too much prep time.
Not this one. From the very first page, I was able to hit the ground running, since the book comes compete with WEEKLY shopping lists and recipes that take a short time to throw together but taste like they've taken all day to cook. We enjoyed Cube steaks with onion gravy, Thai Shrimp, Skillet Chicken Mediterranean and more.
Don't be scared by the "exotic" sounds of some of the recipes. This is family cooking, NOT something that you could only eat if you had the most refined of palates. If your kids aren't fish lovers, you might want to keep some simple alternatives on hand but on most nights, they should be able to eat the same menu as the "Low carbers".
ONE caveat - Some of the recipes are designed for a crockpot. I don't have one and I found it simple to adjust the cooking times. It was no big deal. But do keep in mind that at least one recipe a week is designed for a crockpot. Again, this wasn't a big deal to me, even without one.
In every other way, the book is perfect for our needs and we've branched out into newer, better recipes than before. Thanks, Leanne!

Dana Carpender's Every Calorie Counts Cookbook: 500 Great-Tasting, Sugar-Free, Low-Calorie Recipes that the Whole Family Will Love Review

I had this pre-ordered here at Amazon but found it this past weekend at a bookstore and it was worth paying the difference and having it rather then waiting for it to ship. I love all of Dana's books, but by far this is my favorite. I wasn't sure what to think because of the title saying every calorie counts instead of "low carb" but it is a low carb cookbook, just better for OWL and maintenance, BUT, most everything in this book is 13g carb per serving and less (a lot between 4-8), even dishes with rice and whole wheat flour. She mixes cauli-rice with wild rice and almond flour (meal) with whole wheat flour to keep carb counts low while giving us those grains we can add back once off induction. This is a book perfrect for low carbers and for those watching carbs and calories alike. But its the recipes that earn it 5 stars. Peachy rice (8g per serving) and tandoor chicken is what I made last night and they were delicious (and everything on my plate was 12g carb total). 3 meals like that keep me under my 40 grams daily cab allowance, and yet I enjoyed real rice last night. I'm so happy to have this book. I know it is about to become the most used cookbook because everything appeals to my taste buds. Dana never disappoints us and this one is no exception. Low carbers, don't be fooled by the title, it is low carb. Maybe not low enough carb for induction, but perfect for the later stages of weight loss.
Thank you Dana!!!! And thank you for thinking of all of us who watch what we eat. Its so nice to have all these options for OWL. More recipes for those of us past induction, almost to goal weight or maintaining is always appreciated, especially for those of us who have had to count calories too. This is something not many low carb cookbook authors address and I'm so glad she did. Keep the cookbooks coming Dana!
Oops, it says 4 stars but I gave it 5! I would give it 10 if I could!

Low-Carb Meals in Minutes Review

When I read the first review, of this book posted here, I thought, this person doesn't get it. Linda Gassenheimer has created a very smart collection of recipes which she groups in three stages of a low-carb diet. The recipes in LOW-CARB MEALS IN MINUES are based on three separate 14-day menu plans for beginning, middle and advance low-carb lifestyles. Each recipe in the menu is part of a particular 14-day plan so that all fat intake is planned. You may get an individual recipe that seems to have more fat than it should, but Gassenheimer has compensated by offering recipes with less fat for breakfast or dinner. Most recipes found in such books as The Zone, Sugar Busters and Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution, are not very appetizing. This books is the exception.
I'm a cook so I want to good food and Ms. Gassenheimer, a Cordon-Bleu trained teacher, host of her own NPR food show and James Beard Award-winning author of DINNER IN MINUTES (based on her syndicated column) offers delicious, easy, quick and healthy recipes that the low-carb dieter can live with. Ever try to buy breakfast in a coffeshop or a take-out? Most breakfast items are loaded with carbs--bagels, danish, cereals, bread, french toast, pancakes, waffles, hash brown potatoes--you name it--loaded with carbs. Gassenheimer takes the guess work out of this difficult to organize meal. There are even desserts to enjoy.
Some of my favorite whole meal recipes menus include: shrimp caesar with pears and yogurt, mussels mariniere with mesclun salad, pesto chicken with steamed artichokes and fresh figs, nuevo tex-mex layered salad, pecan ham roll-ups with cinnamon oatmeal, sirloin burger with fresh slaw, asian ginger salmon with sesame broccoli and yellow bean salad, sunny-side up swiss melt, and grilled potobello and canadian bacon omelette.
This is the recipe book us low-carb addicts have been waiting for.

300 15-Minute Low-Carb Recipes: Hundreds of Delicious Meals That Let You Live Your Low-Carb Lifestyle and Never Look Back Review

When I started low-carbing, I soon realised that if I wanted to maintain my weight loss and new lifestyle that I would have to basically re-learn how to cook. I began a messy, experimental phase - downloading dodgy recipes off the internet, hunting down rare and expensive ingredients and throwing out batches of ruined food when I messed up. I'm a lazy chef at the best of times, and I didn't want to be spending so much time, money and energy trying to maintain my diet.
Enter 300 15minute recipes.
This is exactly what I was looking for to solve my daily dinner dilemmas.
- The recipes are easy to follow, including multi-tasking instructions (e.g. when part of the meal is in the oven, do the vegetable steaming in the microwave) which simplify my evenings (who wants to spend an hour in the kitchen when you get home from work?!).
- The book uses common ingredients that even an Australian can get her hands on.
- Techniques and specialty ingredients are very clearly described up front, then explained again as needed.
- And the recipes have been trialled and tested, so tasty, tasty success is pretty much assured.
I'm still stunned by the sheer variety of recipes in here. I may not need to buy a cook book again for a while.
Highly recommended.

Low Carb High Flavor Recipes Made Easy Review

I have nearly every low carb cookbook known to man, but this one is definitly my favorite. It's not for those just starting out with low carb (meaning, those on Induction levels) since Fiona is more liberal with fruits and certain vegetables that are not permitted in the beginning. But once you've moved on to Ongoing Weight Loss phases and beyond (or if you're just low carb in general) this will quickly become a favorite. Since I am nearly at goal weight I've had to lower calories significantly and that is why this cookbook caters so perfectly to me. Although she does have some more "luxurious" dishes with rich ingredients, most of the recipes utilize lean meats and good fats (like olive oil) over things like lard or butter. (I've found most other low carb cookbooks use excessive fat, meaning a dish could have 700 calories or more at times). Some exceptionaly good recipes include the roasted red bell pepper and feta cheese fritatta, the roasted chicken quarters with pear (not the exact title), the mashed cauliflower, the turnip and rutabaga chips, the lamb chops with tomato sauce (not exact title) and her breakfast shakes. I'm still working my way through this book, but I have yet to be disappointed...

Carb Conscious Vegetarian: 150 Delicious Recipes for a Healthy Lifestyle Review

I have a very large collection of vegetarian cookbooks and I have to limit myself now to only adding books that offer something truly special. Well, I know that I can always rely on Robin Robertson and I was looking forward to the release of this book. I have had wonderful results with her other vegetarian cookbooks including Vegan Planet, The Vegetarian Meat and Potatoes Cookbook, Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker and others. I actually own all of her cookbooks. It is amazing how she never fails to provide delicious, simple to prepare, reliable and flavorful vegetarian recipes and this newest cookbook doesn't disappoint!
I highly recommend Carb Conscious Vegetarian for all vegetarian and vegan households. Actually, anyone who is interested in eating more healthfully can benefit from this collection of recipes. Plus, they are all creative and delicious. This book is different from some other vegetarian cookbooks because it doesn't rely heavily on dairy products or refined carbohydrates to add the bulk of meals. Every recipe is vegan and combines fresh vegetables, fruits, beans, soy, whole grains and spices to achieve great results.
The Ginger Sherry Tofu with Green Beans and Water Chestnuts was so awesome that we made it two nights in a row and devoured it entirely. It is easy to prepare and the fresh taste was awesome. We also tried the Sultry Summer Salsa and that was one of the prettiest and best tasting salsas we have ever had. It is perfectly tangy thanks to the tomatillos (which I had never tried before) and the colors are beautifully vibrant with yellow, green and red. It was perfect and my hubby is a salsa connoisseur. We also tried yummy Spice-Rubbed Vegetable Kebobs, Many-Vegetable Bulgur Pilaf and White Bean Hummus with Green Chiles and Black Olives, again yummy! What impresses me the most about Robin Robertson's cookbooks is how she is able to keep things so simple and still pack a flavor punch. The results are consistently outstanding.
Basically it boils down to a few key aspects for any good cookbook:
Delicious food - Everything we have tried so far has been easy and very tasty.
Reusability - We will make all of the recipes we tried again and are looking forward to making so many more recipes. This is the kind of cookbook that inspires you to get into the kitchen and actually cook and there are 150 recipes to choose from.
Nicely laid out design - Carb Conscious Vegetarian has nice easy on the eyes green colored text with clean font and design.
Must have a good index - This book has two very good indexes, one recipe index and one general index.
Extras - She does a very good job explaining carbohydrates and includes several useful appendixes so that we can understand our carbohydrate consumption. Also every recipe has detailed nutrition information.
To get all of the above from a tried and true vegetarian cookbook author at a low price is even better. I read lots of book reviews and would never want to steer anyone wrong. Do yourself a favor and pick Carb Conscious Vegetarian. My husband and I are very pleased with the results and I am sure that you will be too.
Bottom line - This book makes it a pleasure to eat sensibly and eat well!
