The Complete Idiot's Guide to Low-Carb Meals Review

The book contains a reasonable number of recipes and lots of 'hints' that if you've done ANY reading about low carbohydrate eating, will be superfluous.
The recipes run the gamut of carb counts, though I thought that the bulk of them were much higher carb than is helpful. Following the suggestions in this book and the recipes, it wouldn't be all that hard to hit 80-100++ grams of carb per day... which is simply TOO HIGH for many people who are following low carb lifestyles.
Many recipes call for sugar, white flour, semi-sweet chocolate and cornstarch. Come ON... those are NOT "low carb" ingredients.
This is more or less a repackaged low fat/lower cal cookbook with "low carb" thrown on the cover to try to generate some market share. My copy is being donated to a charity, it isn't worth the space on the shelf for someone interested in real "low carb" cooking.

Well, low carb has been all the rage for sometime now although the fad seems to be slowing down somewhat. But not before TV's spunkiest cook can put her stamp on low carb as Rachael Ray does in her latest book. At 256 pages this is Rachael's largest book yet. I've never quite been able to get meals done in 30 minutes. i guess it probably helps having good editors and a staff but even at 45 minutes or so I've enjoyed every one of Rachael's books. It's good food where taste is first, not fancy presntation and ingredients that have you haunting exotic food stores to find.
The recipes here are not all that low-carb so don't be put off by thinking it's a diet cook book. It's just another great one from Rachael where carbs are used in moderation, but not at the sacrifice of taste. Call them good-sense carb recipes as opposed to low-carb. There's plenty of bread and pasta to be found inside. With all her books the emphasis is on good food and good food done fast and this one, like the previous ones, is right on the mark. Wonderful Italian and Mexican dishes, burgers, even desserts. And it all comes to you in Rachael's endearing, homey way of writing that comes across so well on TV. With her new publisher now being a part of Random House, the book is much more well-presented than her previous ones. Bolder colors that stand out and just plain look better.

The Good Carb Cookbook: Secrets of Eating Low on the Glycemic Index Review

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I wish I could give a copy to everyone I know. Not only are the recipes the most delicious healthy foods we've ever made, but Sandra Woodruff explains the nutritional and health reasons for eating good carbs in simple, easy-to-understand language. She emphasizes moderation. Her recipes are followed by nutritional information, including whether they are extremely low GI, low GI, or moderate GI.
The first third of the book is all information you need to know about why traditional fat-free eating isn't making people thinner or healthier, but fatter and unhealthier. For the past 20 years, the food industry has been touting fat-free this and fat-free that..."eat pretzels, gummi bears, eat fat-free, and you'll be fat-free". It's nonsense.
Woodruff explains how and why to eat low on the Glycemic Index. She gives you tons of ideas for low GI breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. She includes low GI options for eating out at nearly every possible type of restaurant- Italian, Indian, Thai- you name it. She also gives a few examples of real people, their situations, and how they changed their health by eating low GI. Not only does this book give you sound nutritional advice (the author is a Registered Dietician), but she also includes over 200 phenomenally delicious recipes.
Eat wholesome real foods, watch what kinds of fats you cook with, exercise, and you will lose weight. Most importantly, though- YOUR BODY WILL LOVE YOU. And your doctor will be thrilled! My husband, who was already exercising regularly, has lost 20 lbs in 6 weeks just by changing to eating low on the Glycemic Index- "Good Carbs". I have also lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks by changing my diet and including exercise. Changing our diet has giving us so much more energy. We feel fantastic.
Do yourself a favor and pick up this book! I researched all the low-carb, no-carb, low-sugar, Zone, Busters, etc... books ... and decided after reading all the information and reviews, to purchase this one. I am so glad I did! You will be too. You owe yourself an energetic, long life. BUY THIS BOOK.

The Vegetarian Low-Carb Diet: The Fast, No-Hunger Weightloss Diet for Vegetarians Review

While I'm neither a vegetarian or a vegan, I did want to have more vegetables in my low carb high protein diet. Rose Elliot did a great job on this book. The book is well balanced with readable information, very useful quick reference charts, menus, recipes, a few encouraging testimonies along the way. She does provide vegan alternatives to the lacto-vegetarian choices. And, best of all, it is an easy inexpensive way to lose weight on a low carb diet.
Her commonsense approach to recipes means you can make them with food typically on hand and quickly. Typically, most of the prep work can be done in a few minutes. And, you can expand on them as you learn the basic techniques. As I've worked my way through the book, one of my favorite recipes is her spaghetti squash using cream cheese with spices.
It literally only takes ten minutes to steam the squash in the microwave then fold in the cheese with spices. You can use already prepared cheese with herbs and spice mixes from the store. Or, you can use Philadelphia cream cheese and have your own ethnic flavors from Mexican to Indian, to Italian Garlic-Parmesan etc. And, you can use almost any steamed vegetable that has been thin sliced. It is a nice break from tomato sauces and there are never any leftovers.
This book is definitely a keeper!

I got this right before Thanksgiving, which I would be hosting for the first time, and the few recipes that I've tried turned out great! I served the stuffing, the green beans amadine, and the butternut squash, and they all went over quite well. My mom (who is really hard to please) enjoyed them all and commended me on serving such a healthy Thanksgiving meal. What I also like about this book are the many dessert recipes. I tried the ranger cookies today and MAN, are they good! Can't wait to try the cheesecake, and the pumpkin pie. Highly Recommended.

I just found out I have high cholesterol and was upset at the idea of giving up foods that I love to eat. But, this book has recipes for most of my favorite foods. I bought several other low-cholesterol cookbooks, but I use this one the most often. There are recipes for everything and they're easy to do. I would recommend this book to anyone!

Dana Carpender has made a serious study of adapting classic recipes from around the world to work with modern low carb diets. In this latest offering, 200 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes, she proves once again that you don't need refined grains and sugars to enjoy healthful, satisfying food - no matter your culinary traditions or meat of preference. The key is quality ingredients, simply prepared.Dana Carpender is a believer in keeping it simple and freshly prepared whenever possible. None of the ingredients were hard to find at my supermarket except perhaps the low-carb imitation honey that shows up in a few recipes. Of the dozen or so main dish recipes I tested in 200 LCSCR I can honestly say that seven were big hits with my family, a few were just okay and just one was bad. All of them cooked on time and just as predicted. There were some very satisfying desserts toward the end, with several variations on cheesecakes and custards that turn out splendidly in my slow cooker. Although I do not normally have a use for appetizer recipes, there is even a section for that - which contains an outstanding hot artichoke dip.
I am impressed with the author's diligence in keeping most recipes under 10 grams of net carbs per serving. Dana really does stick to the universal "rules" of low carb dieting; lots of veggies and meats, occasional artificial sweetening, a sprinkling of fruits now and then and a bare representation of grains and sugars -- and only when absolutely necessary for flavor, never as filler. She is good at innovating more nutritious subs for common starchy side dish ingredients; fauxtatoes (cauliflower) and mashed turnips are big players at her low carb table. Eat the 200 LCSCR way and you will probably have better, more varied natural nutrition than ever before in your typical American diet.
The recipes for lc condiments & sauces are a big bonus to those of us who suffer from sticker shock at the supermarket's low carb pricing practices. Readers of her other lc recipe books may find some of these items familiar, but hey, it is convenient to have them all in one place. And as for convenience, well...slow cooking is the essence of convenience to modern time-challenged dieters.
Did I make it sound as if this book is one of the best kept secrets for low carbers? I hope so, because it is.

So you're on a low carb diet, looking good and feeling great, but your family is definitely on a high carb diet and getting tired of the plain meat dishes you've been serving up lately. Or maybe you are the one who's tired of them. You would like to be able to expand your low carb recipe list, but you don't have a lot of time to spend on the fancy schmancy rigamarole that some low carb cookbooks require. If only you could have your fine palate and your waistline both satisfied...
Say no more my meat-eatin' bretheren! The Everyday Low Carb Slow Cooker Cookbook was literally the answer to my prayers some months ago. As a mom of two small boys and wife to a very picky man I was having a hard time keeping everybody happy at the dinner table while I watched my weight; the "two-entrée meal" was becoming the norm and it took way too much time. In my high carb days I had used my blessed time saver, the crock pot, regularly but recently it was gathering dust on the top shelf. Thank the Lord I can put it to work again and regain my time/sanity.
Now I have to try a minimum of six recipes before I feel that I can review a cookbook with fairness. The recipes that I have completed from TELCSCC are:
Seafood Crustless Quiche (I didn't miss the crust and neither did they - Fabulous!)
Orange Pork
Sausage and White Bean Soup (my dh literally told me it was the best soup ever, bar none)
Chicken with Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Artichokes (rich and hearty, a complete meal)
Chicken with 40 Cloves of Garlic (yes, really!)
Pesto Beef with Grape Tomatoes and Fresh Mozzarella
I think the genius of this cookbook is that the authors recognize that low carb dieters are not only just as busy as everybody else, but also come in a variety of skill levels in the kitchen. Accordingly, there is a special section at the beginning just for the quick'n'easy crowd that features fewer ingredients and timesavers like canned food and packaged mixes to add to your fresh meats and veggies. Believe it or not, the Pesto Beef recipe was one of these! Not that the more "complicated" recipes are that much longer or harder, believe me: the authors make it clear that since slow cookery is all about convenience, their mission is to keep it as simple as possible without sacrificing taste. It would appear that their mission was successful.
In many cases these recipes are so loaded with veggies and hearty broth that you won't need to make a salad or a side dish and nobody will even notice. There are so many more that I haven't gotten to yet, but I'm dying to try the desserts next; Peanut Butter Fudge Cake with Peanut Butter Fudge Drizzle, Coconut Custard, and Pumpkin Pudding, which is promised to be like the pie without the crust. Judging by my success with the quiche, the slow cooker is a natural with those eggy custards and puddings (averaging about 3-4 hours on low).
I would compare this cookbook to Mable Hoffman's Crockery Cookery (the high-carb "bible" for slow cookers) in terms of quality & variety of recipes and simplicity of use. My family has had no complaints since I've started using it, in fact they like TELCSCC dishes better than many of my higher carb dishes. I believe that this is truly the answer for the lifestyles and tastes of a modern health-conscious Americans.

Healthy Carb Cookbook For Dummies Review

I have been part of the low-carb community for several years, watching the trends and the ups and downs of low carb advocacy. I've always leaned toward a healthy version and moderation. From the beginning I preferred "real food" made healthy, and this delightful book offers a wonderful variety of down to earth and delicious, "real world" recipes. This book is a realistic and humorous guide for living a healthy life for real people. It addresses ease of preparation, economy of effort, consideration of meal budgets, and most importantly abundance of flavor - all with health as the underlying factor. I love every recipe I've tried so far.
As any "Dummies" reader knows, there's more to a "Dummies" cookbook than recipes. And in this book, there are terrific, common sense, and again, realistic, advice, tips and information on how to get the most benefit from living right in this fast-paced world. I also appreciate that the author obviously knows her chops, so to speak. She has done her research and provides information that I have not found readily available about low and healthy carb.
I've been researching and reading about all angles of low carb eating for several years, and this book actually gave me some fresh information, new perspectives and a fun read. If you have any curiosity or interest in low or healthy carb cooking, I highly recommend getting a copy of this book.

Easy-read, simple recipes. Short ingredient lists. A cookbook that's clearly organized into short chapters according to meat type. This is what I should have had when I started the Atkins' Diet last year.
Unlike its predecessor, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Cookbook, this Quick & Easy Diet Cookbook is very handy. It's just the thing after a long day when you don't want to get into an elaborate cooking session. I can pull some meat out of the fridge and look up a recipe; chances are, I will have everything I need stocked in my low-carb pantry and fridge. Most of the main dish recipes take under one half hour to prep and finish, and the ones I've tried are all taste-satisfying winners.
There is a beginning chapter that explains how to trim the carb content down if you're in the early Induction phase of the diet. Mostly, though, the meals are all low-carb enough for the Ongoing Weight Loss and Maintenance phases. I think dieters who are into other low carb diets will find it useful, too. There is no guesswork about how many carbs per serving when you measure your ingredients correctly and consult the carb, calorie, etc. counts at the bottom of the page.
Finally, I want to thank the team that finished this book after the Doctor's tragic accident last year. It's great that his "estate" is carrying on his good work to help this country and many more around the world learn how to get healthy and stay that way. Thank you all, and may God bless.

This is a pretty great book. You can just open it up, find a recipe using ingredients that you already have in your kitchen, and put together a delicious meal. The sections are broken down nicely between breakfast foods, appetizers, beef, chicken, fish, etc. that give a wide range of diffent tastes and textures to fit your mood. Additionally, the low number of ingredients means that you won't be stuck in the kitchen preparing a meal for hours; most of the dishes can made ready for the frying pan or oven in about 15 minutes. Still, the best aspect of the book, for those of us embracing a more low-carb lifestyle, is that each recipe lists how many serving the recipe makes along with how many calories and carbs each serving contains. It's very, very useful in managing what you're taking into your body. I recommend this cookbook.

I fell in love at page 13. Fran M. has written many other cookbooks and read even more; she is truly a gourmand. Now she's discovered low-carb! This book is a must for the low carb kitchen: A great foreword with the medical lowdown on low-carb; a section on "the low carb gurus" comparing and contrasting Atkins, Zone, Protein Power, etc; a great "Panty" section telling what to throw out of your cupboards (or give away); how to entertain non-low-carb'ing friends; this book is filled with useful sections. Oh, and the recipes! I started this diet eating cheese, meat, and meat with cheese on it. What variety I've found here! Some recipes are more exotic, and some suited for "weekday" cooking. Desserts! Strawberry gelati! Cheesecake! Chocolate mousse! (I may have to get that ice-cream maker).
THANK YOU! (Could the next edition have photos please? And a longer index?) Note: The "Sources" section with where to get low-carb pantry staples is worth it alone!

They were all over the Internet in 2004, they still are and most of my friends like them. Good to have a kind of "automatic" meal making you go into ketosis and the book looks very nice.

Dana Carpender's previous slow cooker book had been my favorite cookbook. Now, it's this one. I did not notice any missing recipes in the first 6 chapters, but there are loads of new ones that look absolutely yummy. The font and page layout are easy on the eyes. Definitely worth the upgrade from 200 to 300 recipes. You need this book.

Although I've only had this cookbook for a couple of weeks, it already shows the signs of being in daily use-smeared pages with corners turned down, and notes written in the margin. Examples of the storm I've cooked up in just the last two days are the Gingered Swordfish with Lime-Jalapeño Sauce, and Asian Beef over Stir-Fried Bok Choy. With Ms. Giedt's instructions, I cook like a master chef! I'm going to just cook my way through the entire book, and then start over. These are Lo-Carb recipes my friends and I can happily eat forever!

Eating Stella Style: Low-Carb Recipes for Healthy Living Review

I'm a real Stella fan as you can read by my review of his first book. Either one will give you the basics to shed the pounds and keep them off with sensible low-carb life, not counting, but shopping wise and cooking really good food that'll work.
Again, my fascination and usage of George's books are especially for breakfast and lunch and snacks, for these and maybe you are the toughest for this reviewer to keep it creative and healthy. This collection is like his first, just outstanding. You'll enjoy such as: Riviera Omelet (with prochiutto or Parma; Southwestern Breakfast Bites; Cinanamon Toast Pancakes!!!!; Chirstian's Banana Bread Muffins; Uncle Al's Sausage and Peppers Casserole; Kim's Stuffed Chicken Breasts with Lemony White Wine Sauce; Thai Scallop and Prawn Stir-Fry; Roasted Pecan and Herb-Crusted Salmon; Forzen Custard Ice Cream.
Did I mention great Entrees and Desserts as well! Each recipe is not only given the needful nutrition breakouts and good instructions, but each further has "Make It Memorable" and "Healthful Hint" sections. These are really neat, as it has other menu recipe ideas and differences with those on rapid diet descent.
With some nice color photos and all the aids you'll need to keep on low-carb track, this is nice resource for our culinary time.

Making the adjustment to low carb has meant learning a whole new way to cook. Before I discovered this book, other recipes I've tried have been bland or required too much prep time.
Not this one. From the very first page, I was able to hit the ground running, since the book comes compete with WEEKLY shopping lists and recipes that take a short time to throw together but taste like they've taken all day to cook. We enjoyed Cube steaks with onion gravy, Thai Shrimp, Skillet Chicken Mediterranean and more.
Don't be scared by the "exotic" sounds of some of the recipes. This is family cooking, NOT something that you could only eat if you had the most refined of palates. If your kids aren't fish lovers, you might want to keep some simple alternatives on hand but on most nights, they should be able to eat the same menu as the "Low carbers".
ONE caveat - Some of the recipes are designed for a crockpot. I don't have one and I found it simple to adjust the cooking times. It was no big deal. But do keep in mind that at least one recipe a week is designed for a crockpot. Again, this wasn't a big deal to me, even without one.
In every other way, the book is perfect for our needs and we've branched out into newer, better recipes than before. Thanks, Leanne!

I was expecting far more recipes and far easier to find ingredients. I have made a couple of the recipes, but I dont turn to this book first, second, or even third when cooking. I would suggest looking at the book in store before purchasing. It could be just what you are looking for, but it was not what I was looking for.

Quick & Easy Tsukemono: Japanese Pickling Recipes Review

No Japanese meal is complete without tsukemono. Whether you are having a traditional dinner, some sushi, a bowl of udon or even a plate of curry rice, in a Japanese home or restaurant a small dish of pickled yummies will always be set aside your plate, providing a colorful and flavorful accompaniment.
Continuing the "Quick and Easy" series of Japanese cooking, chef Ikuko Hisamatsu has laid out almost 100 easy-to-follow tsukemono recipes that allow you to prepare these necessary side dishes, using seasonal Japanese ingredients which complement the various meals of Japanese cuisine. In addition to the common tsukemono, there are five Korean kim chee recipes, some dessert items like pineapple in lemon, fish side-dishes like salted squid, and some original creations like garlic in honey and garlic in miso.
The ingredient list might require a Japanese or Asian grocery store, unless you have ready access to daikon, shiso leaves, kombu, ume and the like. Required Japanese spices are things like miso, sake-kasu, karashi, wasabi and yuzu citron. Nothing terribly rare, but exotic enough that they probably won't be found at a regular grocery store.
The recipes are easy to follow. If you have never done any pickling before, you can expect some trial and error before you get it exactly right. There are some overall tips for pickling, and advice as to the specific equipment you will need. Pickling does require some special equipment and preparation, so it is not really a "grab and go" type of cook book, although there are simple recipes that you can try right away. The length of time for the recipes vary, and you are probably better off trying a one hour pickle before tackling the two-month long fermentation of the delicious ume boshi.
A necessary book for anyone serious about cooking authentic Japanese meals.

Since my Mom and Mother-in-Law both own this book I was very concerned over the negative review....until I did my homework. Being apprehensive over the carb count I did an estimate on random recipes in the book like the Raspberry Wafer Cookies (mmm) on [...] and I found my rough est. results to be quite reasonable to the book. I found ONE recipe that features a cup of sliced bananas. And as far as "low-carb"...yup, I'd consider 24g/C Splenda (recipe only calls for ½C) compared to 192g/C of sugar is pretty significantly low-carb in my book.
The author mentions several artificial sweetener conversions...not just Splenda. He also mentions the maltodextrin filler on pg. xiii in his book and, yes, you can buy "straight" Splenda...it's called liquid Splenda. ([...]) Also, the packets contain less "filler" (maltodextrin) than the bulk as well as Splenda with fiber. If you're counting every mico-gram of carbs there are options to bulk Splenda. I also found that the FDA has approved Splenda for diabetics on [...] in the diabetes section. So that being said, I'm very glad my family has a healthy, as well as a yummy, delicious, alternative to making high fat/high carb desserts. My homework is done!
