The Busy People's Fast and Frugal Cookbook Review

Any cookbook really has two things going on: the book itself, and the food it produces. This cookbook has so many advantages as a book that I'd like to be able to recommend it without hesitation. Recipes are sorted by prep time, so you can decide if you have 10 minutes to whip up some Hawaiian Sweet Potato soup, and the main dishes (including soups) are presented with a full menu. The book instructs you to set a timer before starting, and then gives you all the steps, and I found that by following the directions I was indeed able to get the meals on the table before the timer rang.
Each dish has a neatly sorted grocery list, and each main dish has a list for the entire suggested meal as well. Instructions are informal yet clear, nutrition information is clearly presented, and overall the book is so user-friendly that I think anyone will be able to succeed with it.
The recipes themselves are something else again. The author refers to these dishes as "down-home cooking" like your grandma used to make, and I guess it depends where you're from. Chipped beef on toast, candied vegetables, and eggs with sauerkraut are very exotic dishes to me. We're assured that these dishes are "delicious recipes that are healthy and easy on the budget," but it's hard to think of meals as healthy when they rely so heavily on things like pie filling and canned biscuits. In fact, cans feature very largely in these meals -- canned soup, canned fruit, canned vegetables, and even canned meat.
I cooked from this cookbook for a weekend, and I certainly could have cooked fresh food more cheaply than these meals. We tried out a dessert made from graham crackers, pudding, and whipped topping which totaled $4.00 -- more than a homemade cake, and neither more healthy nor more delicious.
Still, if you don't know how to cook, or are determined not to spend more than 15 minutes getting dinner on the table, this book could save you from continual drive-through. And if this is the style of cooking you prefer, then these might be faster, cheaper, and conceivably even healthier alternatives to the way your granny cooked.

American Heart Association Meals in Minutes Cookbook: Over 200 All-New Quick and Easy Low-Fat Recipes Review

i bought this book after my dad had a heart attack and i needed to cook healthier foods. the title isn't kidding when it says meals in minutes. there are four categories that the recipes fall into: new classics, planned-overs, shopping cart recipes, and express-ipes. planned-overs utilize left-overs from other recipes, shopping cart recipes only require six common ingredients and are easy to remember, and express-ipes only take a maximum of twenty-five mintues including prep time and cooking. at the top of every recipe it lists the serving size, prep time, and cooking time. at the bottom of each recipe there is a nutrional analysis that tells you the amount of calories, protein, fat, carbs, sodium, etc.

Most of the dishes call for either sausage or cheese. "1 stick of butter" is also a common ingredient. So if you are watching your weight, you would not add these meals into your regular rotation.

Sleep On It: Prepare Delicious Meals the Night Before That You Can Pop In the Oven the Next Day Review

Gordon, the Innkeeper of Nantucket House in Chatham on Cape Cod, has collected recipes from Inns and B & B's around the country that can be prepared the night before and cooked the next day.
Naturally many of these are breakfast or brunch oriented and most are baked, like Spiced Pear French Toast, Cinnamon Crunch Coffee Cake, Seafood Brunch Strata, Bacon and Egg Lasagna, Easy Wild Rice Quiche.
A short appetizer chapter includes cheese balls and dips as well as chicken wings and Mushroom Rolls and for dinner there's Sweet Potato Casserole, Salmon Mexicana, or Baked Barbecued Beef Brisket.
Some recipes use shortcut ingredients like canned soups or frozen bread dough and the variety of sources means there's something to appeal to everyone. This is a folksy book which will chiefly appeal to those who like to entertain for breakfast or brunch.

Wok Fast (Fast Books) Review

I love the approach taken by the authors of this book -- here are the key techniques, here are the ingredients needed, here are the key flavorings (marinades, sauces), and here are some recipes to try. The authors then encourage you to experiment with these basics to suit your own taste. Very refreshing.
If you are brand new to wok cooking, you may want to follow the recipes closely at first. But after your confidence builds (and these excellent recipes help that process along brilliantly) you are free (encouraged in fact) to try your own combinations. Don't like the sound of black bean sauce with a chicken stir-fry? Great, use the tangerine sauce instead. Once you understand how ingredients cook in a wok (shrimp take almost no time, chicken takes x amount of time, etc.), you will be able to substitute and interchange ingredients in no time. This freedom should be one of the goals of a good cookbook -- to stimulate not only your taste buds, but also your imagination.
Sadly, not many authors take this approach. All too often cookbook authors offer the "my way or no way" approach. Do you know someone (maybe even yourself) who is afraid to vary from the ingredients in a recipe? Fortunately, not too many people are that timid, but it is rare to see substitution and experimentation encouraged in a cookbook.
I also appreciate the courage of the authors to "name names" in terms of ingredient brand names. If you are new to Asian food and have no concept of which company produces the best soy or oyster sauce, where pray tell do you learn? The authors actually give you several brand names that they use and recommend. Most ingredients have two brands listed in fact. I learned the hard way how important this information can be. Once I prepared a hoisin-based sauce with whatever brand was available at the local market and it tasted so vile that I could not serve it! Thanks to a few brave souls on the Internet and the authors of this book I now have some brands to purchase that are of a high quality and flavor. I have lost my fear of hoisin!
The recipes in this book are simple and tasty. My favorite sauces so far (there are many to choose from) include the tangerine and basic veggie stir-fry. They are full of flavor but do not overwhelm the meat, fish, or vegetables in the stir-fry. The authors cover quite a few main ingredient groupings (seafood, poultry, vegetables, etc.) in this fairly slim book, but it is not a comprehensive list of recipes by main ingredient. You won't find twelve chicken dishes and fourteen beef dishes in this book for example. However, with the basics mastered you can easily imagine your own perfect dish involving your favorite ingredients.
If I had one desire it would be that the authors would have included a section on salads and salad dressings. What you say, but this is a wok cookbook! Of course it is, but a lovely salad with your stir-fry is a nice accompaniment. Oh well, perhaps this prolific cookbook team will produce another Asian cookbook with salads included.
I highly recommend this book. Buy it and let your imagination run wild. As of this writing (6/12/2003) I see this book is out of stock. Ten Speed Press does a great job on cookbooks in general, but lately I've been seeing a lot of their books going out of print. Hopefully, this book is only between printings. Whatever the case, this is a book worthy of a search - used or new.

The About.Com Guide To Shortcut Cooking: 225 Simple and Delicious Recipes for the Chef on the Go (About.com Guides) Review

This is another of Linda's wonderful cookbooks. She hits the mark with saving time, something that all of us need to do in our hectic world, yet still creating delicious recipes.
I have followed Linda's website, [...], for years. It's great to have a lot of her recipes in a printed form (please, About, publish another one!!).
Some highlights of this book in a nutshell: Every margin has incredibly useful tips and information that are related to the adjacent recipe. She includes some pertinent questions (perhaps from her web readers?) and answers as well. My favorite recipes include the Gourmet Grilled Cheese, Norwegian Toast (like biscotti - heaven with coffee in the morning!), Carmelized Onion Dip (started in the slow cooker), Freezer Waffles (the kids love 'em--I even sneak in a little wheat germ), and the Grilled Seafood pizza which is a hit with my Bunco friends. All of them are very quick and Linda knows just where to cut corners on time, never sacrificing flavor. I can't wait to try more of these recipes. Meanwhile, I will stayed tuned to her website!!
Don't miss the back of the book with Linda's recommendations for her favorite websites and cookbooks.

Express Lane Cookbook: Fast, Healthful Meals with Mimimal Cleanup Review

Sarah Fritschner writes a regular food column in the Louisville paper and it was one of my favorite items to read when I lived there.
This book is ideal for anyone who wants to prepare great tasting food in a minimum amount of time with ingredients that one would usually have on hand. It is an ideal gift for a working person who loves to eat good, nutritious food without a lot of complications.
The book is divided into various sections: soups, vegetables, poultry, meat, fish and seafood, etc.. The recipes are written so it is easy to read the amount of ingredients and to follow the directions. At the end of a recipe, Fritschner usually suggests other foods that will complement the particular recipe one is working on.
I LOVE this book and I give it as a gift often. My copy is thoroughly stained and warped from countless uses.

American Heart Association Quick & Easy Cookbook: More Than 200 Healthful Recipes You Can Make in Minutes Review

I have to give it 4 stars because it doesn't have any pictures. I am basically a picture person - I like to see what the end result should look like.
I have tried other low fat cook books before and have been alittle disappointed with them all. I found only a few recipes that I ended up liking and still occasionally use. I tried have tried 5 recipes from this book so far, and so far they have been very good.
The recipes have plenty of seasoning in them so they don't taste bland. And some of the recipes are common sense ones that use the old rule of substitution ie - instead of oil use apple sauce, instead of sour cream use fat free yogurt etc.
In any case this book is definately a good buy at a good price. I would definately recommend it.

Gluten-Free Cupcakes: 50 Irresistible Recipes Made with Almond and Coconut Flour Review

To start off, I am a HUGE fan of Elana and her work. I have made several recipes from the Gluten Free Almond Flour Cookbook and all are amazing. What I like even more about this cookbook is she branches out from almond flour and uses coconut flour, chia seeds, and flax meal. As much as I love the AFC, they can tend to taste very similar. In this book, there is much more variety, yet still keeping the ingredients list short (love) with most dairy free with even a vegan cupcake. I had to try a recipe as soon as I got the book, so I made a very small batch of the almond poppy seed cupcakes sans frosting. They were amazing. I'm glad to see her use of almond extract too. Honestly, this is gluten free baking at its finest, and I cannot WAIT to try all the recipes. Red velvet cupcakes, goat cheese scallion muffins, souffle cupcakes?! I'm in heaven! And for all you agave haters out there, she even has a honey recipe, and 1:1 substituting has never been a problem for me (I use liquid coconut sugar). Enjoy!

Weight Watchers Quick Meals Review

Great recipes with a lot of variety. Good pictures for those who need to "eat with their eyes". Unfortunately this was published before the point system was instituted so points are not included in the nutritional info. That is the biggest drawback to an otherwise timeless, well written book.

The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time Review

These recipes are quick, easy, good, and best of all, a little more adventurous than your normal "family" cookbooks filled with chicken nuggets and pasta. I am not one to plan a week's meals ahead, and I love that I can open this book and find something great to make out of what I have on hand. I've made at least 15 of the recipes and every one was great. The prep time estimates seem to be pretty accurate. Our family in general likes things a little more spicy than most, so some recipes were a little bland but I just add a little more seasoning if that happens. I think they would probably be fine for most people, especially kids.
I think the authors are right on the mark with their advice on kids trying new foods, no "yuck!"s etc. Their philosophy is similar to our own house rules, and as a result my boys (3 and 7) are great eaters. I had the pleasure of meeting the authors at a bookstore signing, and I was very impressed with their knowledge, sensibility, and friendliness!

Cook Yourself Thin: Skinny Meals You Can Make in Minutes Review

there are better options out there!
"Cook Yourself Thin" is a cute attractive book based on the cute and attractive television series on Lifetime television. While the recipes are tasty and fairly easy, I have a few complaints.
Firstly, the book contains NO nutritional information beyond a simple calorie count. If you are tracking your sodium, fiber, or fat intake, this book will not help you.
Also, some of the recipes are significantly higher in calories than similar diet books. You'll intake 596 calories for two stacks of eggplant and 539 calories for a portobello mushroom tuna melt. While these numbers are lower in comparison to NON-healthful recipes, there are definitely better options.
Despite these complaints, I do like this book. The presentation is nice and the recipes are delicious. As a healthful chef, I can definitely recommend "Cook Yourself Thin." As an earnest dieter, I think the book is acceptable - but not the best. I highly recommend "The Most Decadent Diet Ever" by Devin Alexander. It has more thorough nutritional information and a better serving size/calorie ratio.

Raw Foods for Busy People: Simple and Machine-Free Recipes for Every Day Review

Its very apparent that a lot of love went into making this book. The layout, additional info and resources are excellent and presented very clearly.
As a single guy with not a lot of free time I searched all over for a Raw Foods cookbook that I could use. This is the ONLY book I found that has things I'd eat, enjoy and are easy to make without exorbitant costs or prep times or weird ingredients.
Honestly after researching a lot of the Raw Foods books I figured the only people who could eat this way are housewives with a lot of money, I couldnt imagine anyone spending the time or wanting to eat a lot of the recipes in these other books.
After making many things from the book I can say that they fall into two categories-great or bland/too watery. Things like the cinnamon stewed apples, cashew cream, schezwan marinade, halvah shake, puddings and the dehydrator recipes are outstanding. Others like the gravy, curry apple marinade, tahini marinade, mashed potatoes and others are way too watery or lack flavor. I'd still rate this book 5 stars since theres no other raw cookbook like this but I think she needs to fine tune some of these recipes.
Would still highly reccomend it though. It was a big relief to get a practical book like this after my 1st purchase- Raw in Ten which was truly an awful raw book.

Lean and Luscious Favorites: The World's Best 301 Lowfat Recipes: Delicious, Easy to Prepare, Fun, and Healthful Review

I love to collect cookbooks, but insist on having full nutritional breakdown and healthy recipes. This book is going to quickly become one of my favorites. The recipes are short, using natural ingredients, and healthy. There are many great new ideas for boneless chicken, and ideas for everything from appetizers to desserts. The very first recipe, Crab-Stuffed Mushrooms, looks wonderful, and will be one of the first I will try. I bought a copy for myself and one as a gift for a friend, and definitely recommend it.

I just adore all of Kristen Suzannes books, and this one is definitely my new favorite! As a vegan who experiments with raw foods I found this book to be the perfect balance. So many of the meals are great for the whole family, even the picky eaters! I also really like that she uses the best quality of ingredients with nothing artificial. All fresh and plant based. What a great book for those who are just starting out with raw foods or those who've been vegan for years! Two thumbs up for Easy Raw Transition!

Quick Fix Meals: 200 Simple, Delicious Recipes to Make Mealtime Easy Review

I preordered this book (placed my order on Feb 21), and it arrived Mar 13 (it didn't hit the stands until Mar 12, so I was impressed with the Amazon delivery service -- especially since I did the Super Saver shipping). But anyway, about the book...
I was looking forward to this book's release, since I enjoy the show. I compare Robin Miller to Rachel Ray's "30 minute Meals" series, so I'm also comparing their cookbooks. The recipes in this book are very similar to Rachel's recipes. If you're looking to spice up your dinner time, you'll find little difference between Robin's book and Rachel's series (they have the same types of recipes with interesting ingredients and flavors that "normal" folks like me would never think of trying). Most recipes don't have tons of ingredients, but they do have ingredients that require everyday folks to make a special trip to the grocery store. Don't expect to open this book and just start having dinner.
Both cooks claim to have the secret to great dinner in a flash. I sum up the difference between Robin and Rachel as this: Robin just takes you a few steps back and tells you HOW to make it quick, not just how to cook. She comes out the winner because she gives you the secret: pre-planning, prepping, and a well-stocked kitchen.
The first chapter in the book explains her strategies, such as "In the Bag" -- creating meal kits and storing them in fridge or freezer for later use, and "Morphing It" -- using one dish to create many others. Not exactly rocket science, but if you're a full-time working mom like me, you just never quite heard or saw it put this way.
She also includes a section on how to get your kitchen to be "quick fix" friendly. Prepping, storing, freezing, 5 basic sauces to prepare and store, her top 10 never-without pantry and fridge items.
The recipes include time-saver tips, ways to "quick fix it" your way. The Morph It section starts with a main recipe, and the "morph it" recipes follow (no searching through indexes to find the matching recipes -- a BIG PLUS). All the recipes include timing guides for prep and actual cooking time, so you can plan when you want to prep and when you want to cook. The index is complete, but is organized like the indexes in those coooking magazines at the grocery store.
The print in this book is small! It's in a green ink and a brown ink, which is sort of easy on the eyes, but it could be a bit bigger. Also, all the recipes that are on the left page have the ingredient list on the inside of the page, near the center fold. I don't know why they did this, because I found myself pulling the book apart to see the recipe list. This will definitely wear the book out quicker than normal.
I'm leaning more towards Robin's book, only because of her overall strategy included in the book (prepping ahead, morphing one dish into many). The authors did a good job of trying to make the book organized and not chaotic or daunting. The language is very friendly, not formal. It stays true to the whole concept of de-stressing the dinnertime dilemma. Rachel's great too -- this book just speaks more to women like me, who feel guilty about how many nights I put $5 pizza on the table when my family deserves better.
UPDATE: I've had the book for 2 months now. Still love it! But one downer: the dessert section could have been taken from a Sandra Lee "Semi-Homemade" recipe book. Cool Whip, jam, chocolate sauce, with a bit of fruit thrown in.
NEW UPDATE: This book has really changed the way I shop and cook. I have several very helpful habits now!! I ALWAYS have pre-cut onions, green peppers, celery, and potatoes in my freezer. When I make any gravy or sauce, I make a big batch and store it in a ziploc bag. And once or twice a month, I'll cook a whole bag of boneless skinless chicken breasts, slice them up, and toss then in ziploc bags in the freezer. Just these few tricks have TREMENDOUSLY changed how fast I get dinner on the table. Even if I didn't like the recipes (which I mostly do), these new habits made the book price worth it 20x over!!!!!

Dinner in Minutes: Memorable Meals for Busy Cooks Review

This cookbook is a great resource. Most of the recipes I've tested are very flavorful and simple to prepare. The author seems to be fairly health conscious in the selections she put in this book. I also liked how the entire meal is planned for you and the author gives good tips on how to cut time in the kitchen.

The Guy Can't Cook Review

I bought this book for my fiance, and I have to admit I find myself looking at recipes in it even more than him. So far I've done two of them, and they were both a hit. The one was a meatloaf, and my entire family loved it. So much so even that my mom stole the recipe and made it (my dad hates her meatloaf), I laughed when they called a week later and said it was the best meatloaf she'd ever made. There's also some neat tips throughout the book, like how to tell how well done a steak is by comparing it to your hand. This is a catch all book with a wide variety of recipes to fit every meal and skill level. Highly reccomended!

Miserly Meals: Healthy, Tasty Recipes Under 75¢ per Serving Review

I am a fan of Jonni McCoy's other two books - "Frugal Families" and "Miserly Moms", so I purchased her book "Miserly Meals". I have to say that we have tried a week's worth of meals (including lunches) and we are sorely disappointed. These may be inexpensive and healthy, but they are not all that tasty. Some don't even work right. Last night, I made Mock Pizza in the slow cooker and it called for uncooked egg noodles. There apparently wasn't enough liquid in the recipe because the bottom noodles were cooked, but the top ones were still crunchy. I kept adding liquid, but then it was plain old mush. Yuck. Several other recipes are bland and boring.
I did like the meatball recipe, however, and even tripled it for my freezer. Some of the other basic recipes were also good, such as the taco sauce and spaghetti sauce. But we were very disappointed in many of the meals.
One other concern I had was that the yield of the recipes were not consistent. Some served four, some six, some eight. I would have appreciated a little more consistency there. We have a family of six, though, and even recipes that said they served six weren't enough for us.
I did like the kitchen tips and the nutritional breakdown of each meal. I wish the index was a little more comprehensive so that I could find a recipe when I wanted to use tomatoes, for example.
Overall, we were simply disappointed.
