Party Like a Culinista: Fresh Recipes, Bold Flavors, and Good Friends Review

Just looking at the cover of Jill Donenfeld and Josetth Gordon's new cookbook, makes me smile. It generates happiness. I am excited and inspired to have a dinner party right now! I have a huge number of cookbooks but none quite like this one. This book is an absolute gem.
Party Like A Culinista has an amazing format. Not only are there menu suggestions, each recipe is designated as "easy", "make ahead", "vegan" or "vegan flex", as well as offering the cooking order. The book even suggests when to change into your party clothes! How fun is that? The photos of the prepared recipes in the book are beautiful and make my mouth water because they look so delicious. The chapters in this book offer suggestions for all different kinds of parties from the casual daytime party to a last minute party, an anytime party or even a big "blow out" more formal party.
I have tried quite a few of the recipes in this book and found them all delicious, unique with a nod towards healthy preparation and ingredients. Though everything has been absolutely excellent some of my favorites are: the Chicken and Apricot Falafel, the Seafood Cobb, the Warm Squash Salad with Faro, Hazelnuts, and Currants, the Arugula and Mozzarella Salad with Eggplant Caponate and the Roasted Vegetable Enchiladas. The Chorizo Red Pepper Polenta Squares are fabulous and a snap to make.
As for ease of use, I think the pictures are really helpful, the directions are very clear with tons of information so that even an inexperienced cook can prepare an impressive, flavorful and healthy meal that will be an enormous hit with his or her guests. The authors offer suggestions for the substitution of hard to find or out of season ingredients. Stated prep/cooking times seem right on, and since many of them require less than an hour, it's pretty easy to pull together a meal quickly. I appreciate that the advance preparation and hold times for the refrigerator and freezer (if applicable) that are given for each recipe. I almost feel as if I am in an expensive cooking class. The introduction includes good information about ingredients, preparation and even equipment. Variations to the recipes are also provided to make them vegan. Finally, I think there are numerous recipes that would appeal to people who like lean proteins with healthy, flavorful sauces, too. If you like lots of flavor, you won't go wrong with this book. It is sure to become one of your favorites.

Cake Mix Magic Review

Overall not a bad cookbook but I think that there are better cake cookbooks out there. I much prefer the Cake Mix Doctor cookbook by Ann Byrn along the same lines and here's why. There is a picture of every cake, something that is missing in this book. Also there are recipes for homemade frosting, glazes etc instead of just instructing you to use canned frosting. Just a little something more to give it the "homemade" feel.

Little Cafe Cakes Review

Not to say this isn't a fine book. What I wish I'd realized is that it's from New Zealand. I am in the United States. Some measurements are metric. Some aren't. Many measurements are by weight, so have a kitchen scale handy. Temps are celsius. I'll have to do many conversions. Other problems: many things have different names than we use here, so I have to translate to figure out what they are. Also, some things are not foods available here, as far as I know, like quark. What is that?
Cookbooks are better if they are from your region, in terms of measurement and temperature systems -- and available ingredients. Some of the cakes sound bizarre to me for that reason, but there are lots of interesting-sounding items to try!

The Cake Mix Doctor Bakes Gluten-Free Review

Leave it to the very creative Anne Byrn to be right on top of food trends with her latest cookbook entry - The Cake Mix Doctor Bakes Gluten-Free. We love the layout of this book which is easy to read, contains a helpful recipe reminder panel on some recipe pages where you can jot down your own notes, and offers just plain old good advice, like how to prevent a bundt cake from sticking to the pan! Be sure to read the "Cake Mix Doctor Says" tips listed at the bottom of most recipes.
Byrn proves that just because a dessert recipe is gluten-free doesn't mean it has to be dull. Among her more than 50 recipes is an Almond Cream Cheese Pound Cake, Caramel Melted Ice Cream Cake, German Chocolate Cake, Coconut Cake with Fluffy Marshmallow Frosting and even a Gluten-free Wedding Cake! Recipes cover layer cakes, bundts, sheet cakes and bars, brownies, cookies and cupcakes, too. Just browsing through this book has us ready to get out our mixing bowl and bundt pan.

Cake Mix Cookies: More Than 175 Delectable Cookie Recipes That Begin With a Box of Cake Mix Review

I suppose you could call me the cowardly baker, because, though I love to cook, I often take shortcuts with baking. I've made quite a few cake mix cookies over the years, and it's much like the doctored cake mix cakes--the basic ones may taste like a cake mix, but the well-doctored ones don't.
This collection has an inspiring number of flavor combinations and cookie varieties. I was hopeful when I ordered it that it would live up to the promise of containing many options different from the cake mix cookie recipes that are already out there. Well, it does, and then some. The Viennese tea cakes are simply delicious, and so easy--a can of almond filling is the secret ingredient. They took about 3 minutes to whip up. I took the plunge and made the classic madeleines, too--a bit of a stretch for me since I had to whip some egg whites, but that was the only fussy part and they turned out buttery, golden and delicious.
This has fast become a favorite on my cookbook shelf.

Passover Cookery : In the Kitchen with Joan Kekst Review

Reviewer: Norene Gilletz, Kosher cookbook author of "The Food Processor Bible" and "MealLeaniYumm! 800 Fast, Fabulous & Healthy Recipes"
Joan Kekst truly understands that everyone recalls the aroma, nostalgia and 'taste memories' of childhood Passovers with their grandparents. Her user-friendly, comprehensive cookbook helps both the new and experienced cook capture and create traditional Passover flavors. In addition to wonderful recipes, it also contains a complete 'Countdown to Passover' guide to help busy cooks and their families organize holiday preparations into easy steps. Kekst includes Sephardic and Ashenazic specialties, dishes that can be made in advance, foods that children will love, and low-fat/low-cholesterol and vegetarian recipe suggestions.
Recipes include Boneless Stuffed Breast of Veal, Potato Knishes with Carmelized Onions, Spinach Moussaka, and Passover Grilled Cheese "Sandwiches." A friend raved about the Chocolate Chip Cookies, giving them the ultimate compliment - "These sure don't taste like Passover!" Passover Cookery is sure to provide many traditional and new food memories.

MORE GREAT GOOD DAIRY-FREE DESSERTS NATURALLY Review

This book is completely vegan and most recipes contain some whole grain ingredients and less refined sweeteners.
The first chapter - Getting Started - contains helpful information about baking without dairy products and using natural sweeteners. I especially liked the "Tips and Techniques for Making and Baking Desserts" and "A Baker's Dozen Secrets to Successful Desserts." I also like that Costigan recommends using organic ingredients.
The rest of the book is devoted to recipes. I particulary enjoyed the information, advice and tips at the beginning of each section.
- Great Good Gels, Creams, Puddings, and Sauces
- Great Good Cookies, Bars, and Little Bites
- Great Good Cobblers, Crisps, Biscuits, Muffins, and More
- Great Good Cakes, Fillings, Frostings, and Glazes
- Great Good Pies and Tarts
- Great Good Fruit, Beverages, Frozen Desserts, and Confections
For me, the most surprising thing about these recipes was how light they all were - even when I replaced the white sugar with whole wheat. You defintely would never guess the recipes were vegan or healthier than the typical white sugar/white flour, made with dairy desserts.
My only problem - and I have this critism with almost all dessert cookbooks - is that all the recipes were too sweet. I cut down the sweetener by 1/4 to 1/2 in almost everyone. But that is easily done and would not keep me from using this book.
Our favorite recipes were Currant Scones, Oat Sesame Squares, and Coconut Sorbet. Yum!

101 Recipes for Microwave Mug Cakes: Single-Serving Snacks in Less Than 10 Minutes Review

If you have small kids that love cup cakes, this book is a way to satisfy the demand without making a dozen or more that often get wasted after the novelty of the cup cake has worn off. Plus as an added attraction, you make the desserts in the microwave in a mug. Easy and quick and generally no fuss and muss.
You'll find clever recipes like Banana Nana Microwave Mug Cake to a delicious Heavenly Chocolate Microwave Mug Cake. The beginning of the book contains a suggested pantry list for that spur of the moment Mug Cake craving. Many who bake with some regularity will already have either all or most of the ingredients which include basics like flour, sugar, cocoa powder, instant puddings, milk, eggs, oil and the like. Actually, the one thing I didn't have was a 16 ounce mug which works best for the liquids and the cooking.
The cakes are quick to make and are large enough to satisfy two or three toddlers. The author does tell you not to save any leftovers as they become hard and heavy. This is true. These are designed to be eaten right away. The aroma of your mug cake will certainly having you grabbing a spoon and eating it right out of the microwave!

750 Best Muffin Recipes: Everything from breakfast classics to gluten-free, vegan and coffeehouse favorites Review

I ordered this from my cookbook club, but decided to post here on amazon , too. I have countless baking cookbooks, but this one is moving front and center as a new favorite. I have two other cookbooks by Camilla and have watched her on the Food Network many times. Every recipe creation I've tried from her has not just been good, but outstanding. I think she is extraordinarily talented.--not only are the recipes innovative, but her instructions are crystal clear, making it near-impossible to go wrong. My first thought when I saw "750 muffins" was "really???" But when you see the book, it makes perfect sense--it's like 9 complete books in one, each chapter (e.g., classics, morning muffins, savory muffins, farmer's market muffins, vegan muffins, etc). can stand alone--like 9 books for the price of 1.
Although I am excited by all of the muffins, the global muffins chapter and the farmer's market chapters are absolutely thrilling. Made the Gajar Halva Carrot Muffins for my book group (Indian-inspired muffins with cardamom & pistachios. There's a gorgeous photo of them in the book) -as we were reading a collection of Indian short stories. I believe we spent more time talking about the muffins than the book--this is one of the most delicious baked goods I've ever made.
From the Farmer's Market chapter I've already made the blueberry goat cheese muffins (to die for) and could not resist trying the Kale & Toasted Walnut muffins (I had a heaps of kale in my CSA box). Spectacular!!! Served them with a white bean soup. Who would have thought Kale would work perfectly in a muffin? Camilla, that's who.
This is a beautiful book in every sense, and I'm a tough critic. Brava, Ms. Saulsbury!!!

Fearless Baking: Over 100 Recipes That Anyone Can Make Review

Organized by technique (Just Stir and Bake, Rolled Crusts for Pies and Tarts, Baking with Chocolate), "Washington Post" food columnist and cookbook author ("Bake and Freeze Desserts") Elinor Klivans' "Fearless Baking" promises good results for the least experienced.
Each recipe begins with "baking answers," anticipating problems and questions and explaining the why behind the directions, then continues with clear, detailed, step-by-step instructions, along with do-ahead hints and storage requirements. The preface includes a baking glossary, utensil and pantry lists and a primer on techniques.
There are savories among the sweets (green tomato and cornmeal pecan crisp; lemon, sage, parsley and thyme cheesecake), cookies, cakes, breads and, of course, the perfect pie crust every time. Klivans' precision and clarity is inspiring and reassuring and the range of recipes offers plenty for the veteran baker as well as the novice.
