Jamie's Food Revolution: Rediscover How to Cook Simple, Delicious, Affordable Meals Review

Jamie Oliver's cookbook is beautiful. It is full color, complete with step-by-step pictures and easy to follow traditional recipes but with a definite twist. Jamie's cooking hook is that the recipes are fairly quick, good for you and easy. So easy in fact, that Jamie has rounded up a bunch of every day folks who would never consider themselves cooks and challenged them to cook the recipes in his book. He challenged them by teaching them how to make the dishes. Jamie believes that non-cooks can cook these meals and proves it by including some of these folks, in full-color glossy glory, with their now-mastered meals!
The result is brilliant. The reader is tempted, inspired, and motivated, just as I was last Sunday, when I attempted "The Perfect Roast" on page 192. I followed the recipe to the letter and served my family a delicious roast dinner complete with horseradish sauce, p.210 and evolution cucumber salad p.114. (note to Jamie, as you suggested I improvised and added bacon bits to the cucumber salad and it was delish!)
You see, Jamie's cookbook has a challenge attached to it. He wants folks to start cooking again in their own kitchens! So... he challenges his readers to "pass it on." He asks readers to try some of the recipes in his book and then teach someone else the recipes and so on and so on and so on, you get the idea. Although I will probably skip signing that actual pledge which you can find on his website at [...] I will continue to try delicious recipes from this book and will pass them on to my friends and family.
Some of the other recipes that look terrific: Classic Tomato Spaghetti, p.43, Hardly Any Prep Shrimp Stir Fry, p.66, the entire Chopped Salad section p.120-p.125, Baked Creamy Leeks, p.123, and Pork Kabobs, p.238. Oh heck, the entire cookbook is full of terrific recipes. The desserts, including the Mega Chocolate Fudge Cake, look pretty awesome, too. Jamie combines traditional cooking with conventional time and money constraints making this book a pleasure to work with. I also love that fact that Jamie tells us, with more gorgeous pictures, the equipment we will need to get back to cooking and the essential ingredients we will need to stock in the cupboard for cooking success. Cooking this Fall is going to be a breeze!

The Fertile Kitchen Cookbook: Simple Recipes for Optimizing Your Fertility Review

I ate that way for years and had female issues. Lots of veggies means not enough body fat to sustain a pregnancy (on the chart, my BMI was normal, but I have more muscle, therefore less body fat). When a doctor recommended more meat and more dairy for the extra protein to help another condition, I gained weight (enough to push my BMI above normal range, but still OK because of the extra muscle mass) and my female issues resolved. So this diet may NOT help every woman.

Petit Appetit: Eat, Drink, and Be Merry: Easy, Organic Snacks, Beverages, and Party Foods for Kids of All Ages Review

What a wealth of information! I highly recommend this book to any parent who wants ideas of healthy (but also delicious) foods to prepare for their family...or for reinforcement of what you may be doing "right". Snap it up at Amazon's bargain price!!
I purchased this book, after searching for books on children's nutrition and kid-pleasing healthy cookbooks this fall. It sounded like Lisa's first book was well received so I preordered this one. When it arrived this week I wanted to read it cover to cover! It has so much information, but is also presented in an attainable, simple way. Lisa is a mom and she clearly "gets it". The book is realistic, not preachy. It covers the seasonal/local/organic issues...gives good ideas for involving your children in the planning/cooking process...and is chock full of interesting recipes.
So far, I have prepared her Mango Chicken Quesadillas (per Lisa's recipe for my kids, then added some spicy mango chutney and made a side of chili spiked sour cream to the second batch for my book club coming over later that night). They were great on both fronts.
Tonight I whipped up "Ellery's Minestrone Soup" in an effort to give my kids a warm, veggie filled entrée. It is colorful, our kitchen smells wonderful, and my two mini taste testers approved. Another hit from her book. It took just a half hour to prepare. I substituted Trader Joe's Alphabet pasta for the macaroni, and added some "excitement" to the meal (if you're six years old!).
Nutrition information is provided on the side bar of each recipe, as are pictorial keys ("perfect for packing"..."gluten free"..."vegetarian", etc.) The only thing that I feel is maybe missing from Lisa's book is an index of the recipes by each recipe by these categorizations. It would have been nice to quickly skim the "perfect for packing" recipes as I'm planning lunches. Still, if that's all that's missing then this is a really fabulous resource.
Tomorrow we look forward to making Lisa's "Oatcake" recipe which sounds like a healthful oatmeal cookie. Something I can whip up on the weekend, and feel good about handing to the backseat on those mornings when we're running a little late!
Lisa has come up with such a great book, one that I look forward to recommending to friends, and that is sure to become one of my go-to baby gifts!! Now I want to check out her first cookbook too, but right now we need to sit down to our delish Minestrone soup!

Food to Live By: The Earthbound Farm Organic Cookbook (Earthbound Farm Organic Cookbk) Review

The beautiful cover of this cookbook caught my eye but the personal story of Earthbound Farms beginnings and the fantastic recipes have held me captive and peaked my enthusiasm for organics and healthy cooking. Since buying this delightful cookbook I feel a bit obsessed with trying recipe after recipe. I was especially happy to see the meat recipes as I have wanted to incorporate more organic meat dishes into my family's diet, especially with 2 teenagers, but felt I lacked experience in buying and preparing meat. What a hit they have been with my family and unexpected surprise in this cookbook. The Sizzling Steak with Olive Sauce had everyone applauding mom's new found culinary skills and the Merlot Braised Shortribs elevated my status to "chef Mom".
In addition to expanding my repertoire of meals this cookbook has given me healthier versions of some family favorites. The Maple Walnut Muffins thrilled me with the small amount of sugar and no butter! Using a 1/4 cup of heart healthy canola oil instead of the 2 sticks of butter I was using in The Barefoot Contessa's Banana Crunch Muffins showed me how easy to eliminate fat and not sacrifice taste. My kids adored them as well as all 30 of the recipes I have tried to date.
This is a cookbook I highly recommend and bought for many family and friends. Its interesting tips and facts as well as beautiful, inspiring photos have made cooking 24/7 for my family a delight and pleasure.

Wildly Affordable Organic: Eat Fabulous Food, Get Healthy, and Save the Planet--All on $5 a Day or Less Review

I live in the same city as the author, and have followed her work ever since she was featured in the local paper. Previously she had e-books which covered much of this same material. However, I was excited to see she was finally publishing. Reading about how the project evolved was fun -- it was not easy at first but she figured it all out and passes it on to us. She lists what brands to buy, and how to organize your cooking to minimize time in the kitchen.
If you are a vegetarian who likes beans, this is a great book. She has adaptations for vegans. If you want to learn to make no knead bread, this is a great book. My husband liked it the first time I made it and he is a meat eating man who has never liked my bread before. Even I did not like my bread before.
The book is hugely practical, and rest assured, you really can do it for $5/per day/per person. The author regularly shops the local stores to see what the current pricing is. You can do it for less if you go non organic.
In posts on her web site, Linda talks about buying all the equipment needed for cooking (basics: pans, knives, etc) for less than $100. I would like to see Amazon package the collection plus the book for persons starting out in their first home. Page 55 lists the essentials.

Chefs on the Farm: Recipes and Inspiration from the Quillisascut Farm School of the Domestic Arts Review

"Chefs on the Farm" is part cookbook, part treatise on eating locally. It focuses on Quillisascut Farm, a small, family-run business in northeastern Washington state. Richly illustrated with numerous color photographs, the book is organized by the seasons -- winter, spring, summer, fall. For each season there are several recipes featuring local foods available at that time of year along with discussion of life on the farm during that season and other aspects of the connection between farm and table. The book also includes profiles of farmers and chefs who participate in the local foods movement.
In line with the focus on eating locally and more sustainably, several of the recipes highlight less commonly know vegetables, such as heirloom varieties of beans and potatoes, and cuts of meat. One that particularly caught my eye was a recipe for oxtail and parsnip lasagna, but there are also recipes for more traditional fare such as apricot preserves. A couple of the recipes made me want to rush into the kitchen to cook, specifically coffee toffee bread pudding with cajeta sauce (a caramel sauce made with goat's milk) and cardamom-apple stuffed French toast with cider syrup.
Overall, I found "Chefs on the Farm" to be an inspirational and enjoyable window into the local food movement. Though not really a how-to book for a newcomer to eating more sustainably, the book does include a few helpful tips for book for finding local food.

The Earthbound Cook: 250 Recipes for Delicious Food and a Healthy Planet Review

Wow. I am so impressed with Earthbound Farm's new cookbook. I have been reading it since 6:00 a.m. this morning. Not only is it a great cookbook, but I really enjoy the explanations/definitions of what is farmed seafood, what is organic vs. natural meat, tips about recycling and it seems like every other page has a "living green" section. As a consumer, I have been really confused about what these various things mean. Now, I have an better understanding.
The recipes range from Myra Goodman's Mother Edith's Stuffed Cabbage recipe to Vietnamese Shrimp and Bok Choy Curry. Myra also gives a very good explanation of Southeast Asian cooking and various types of green and red curry recipes. There is also a vegetarian section with unique and easy to make side dishes and entrees.
Again, this is such a good cookbook. She even has an entire section on how to cut herbs and what kind of knives are most effective.
I really look forward to reading again tomorrow morning as I drink my 6:00 a.m. coffee. Earthbound Cook is not just a cookbook, it's an educational tool that can teach me how to make better choices as a consumer and a person who feels responsibility to the earth.
