What's for Dinner: 200 Delicious Recipes That Work Every Time Review

We bought this cookbook on a whim (we liked the title) and have found it is now the first one we reach for when company is coming or the kids are tired of chicken and mac-n'cheese. The recipes are easy to do, many can be prepared in advance, and the author makes life easier by recommending accompanying side dishes and desserts. Every recipe we've tried has been a "winner". For a family on the go, this cookbook has made having a real dinner possible!

Jamie's Food Revolution: Rediscover How to Cook Simple, Delicious, Affordable Meals Review

Jamie Oliver's cookbook is beautiful. It is full color, complete with step-by-step pictures and easy to follow traditional recipes but with a definite twist. Jamie's cooking hook is that the recipes are fairly quick, good for you and easy. So easy in fact, that Jamie has rounded up a bunch of every day folks who would never consider themselves cooks and challenged them to cook the recipes in his book. He challenged them by teaching them how to make the dishes. Jamie believes that non-cooks can cook these meals and proves it by including some of these folks, in full-color glossy glory, with their now-mastered meals!
The result is brilliant. The reader is tempted, inspired, and motivated, just as I was last Sunday, when I attempted "The Perfect Roast" on page 192. I followed the recipe to the letter and served my family a delicious roast dinner complete with horseradish sauce, p.210 and evolution cucumber salad p.114. (note to Jamie, as you suggested I improvised and added bacon bits to the cucumber salad and it was delish!)
You see, Jamie's cookbook has a challenge attached to it. He wants folks to start cooking again in their own kitchens! So... he challenges his readers to "pass it on." He asks readers to try some of the recipes in his book and then teach someone else the recipes and so on and so on and so on, you get the idea. Although I will probably skip signing that actual pledge which you can find on his website at [...] I will continue to try delicious recipes from this book and will pass them on to my friends and family.
Some of the other recipes that look terrific: Classic Tomato Spaghetti, p.43, Hardly Any Prep Shrimp Stir Fry, p.66, the entire Chopped Salad section p.120-p.125, Baked Creamy Leeks, p.123, and Pork Kabobs, p.238. Oh heck, the entire cookbook is full of terrific recipes. The desserts, including the Mega Chocolate Fudge Cake, look pretty awesome, too. Jamie combines traditional cooking with conventional time and money constraints making this book a pleasure to work with. I also love that fact that Jamie tells us, with more gorgeous pictures, the equipment we will need to get back to cooking and the essential ingredients we will need to stock in the cupboard for cooking success. Cooking this Fall is going to be a breeze!

Super Suppers Cookbook Review

First off, this cookbook's presentation is simply beautiful. There are many wonderful photographs of the finished product (something most freezer cookbooks lack). The one issue I have with this cookbook is that the directions are only given for 1 meal. Dream Dinners gives directions for one and three meals and Don't Panic, Dinner's in the Freezer gives one meal, three meals and nine meals. Having the ingredients already ratioed for larger bulk cooking meals (which is really a basis of freezer cooking for me) is a nice addition and sorely missed in this book. There is a nice selection of meals to choose from in this cookbook. There are not repetitive of the books already out there. Don't Panic, Dinner's in the Freezer is still my fave but this is a welcome addition to my kitchen even though I will have to write double and triple calculations in the margins

The Cleaner Plate Club: Raising Healthy Eaters One Meal at a Time Review

I have not written a review before but I just cleaned the dishes and I wanted to brag, because my kids ate my cooking. I am not a confident cook. I get overwhelmed by dinner time, I have such guilt that I am just scared to cook, even for my children. The Cleaner Plate Club is probably my 6th kid-oriented cook book. Anyway, I was drawn to it by the title, the colors, the easy to follow sections. Even so, I can let a book sit on my shelf for months before I try anything, but this time, I just hunkered down and made a meatloaf! I was surprised by what a difference their attitude made. I found it less scary to try the meatloaf because they have a way of letting you screw up and still feel like you are doing it right(?) seriously. I feel very grateful for this book. It is really disarming and fun. I think these women speak to me, not down to me, and my very chaotic life. The food is interesting, simple, so far very tasty and dare I say forgiving? I recommend this to anyone who is a working mom, like me, and looking for a more contemporary and real approach to cooking.

The Freezer Cooking Manual from 30 Day Gourmet: A Month of Meals Made Easy Review

I bought this book a few months ago after a friend recommended it. My friend has a cooking partner and they've been cooking this way for well over a year now. My circumstances do not allow me to spend a whole day cooking meals, but I have used the ideas and recipes in the book to fit our family. Instead of spending a whole day cooking enough dinners for a month, I will make 2 or 3 meals' worth of a recipe when I do cook. I freeze what we don't eat and I've accumulated quite a good supply of meals that are in the freezer.
Tara and Nanci have developed quite a system. There are charts and worksheets that are extremely helpful. This book is not just a book of recipes that freeze well. It's chock-full of information and techniques. Also, 30daygourmet.com is their website and they have message boards (with the authors participating!) and if you own the book, you can see and print out an additional 50 recipes, set up just like the ones in the cookbook!
The ingredients are listed in quantities for one meal, then they do all the math and multiply out what you need for however many meals you want to make.
The recipes are very family-friendly and delicious. No strange ingredients that you would have trouble finding. Everything I've made from the cookbook has been WONDERFUL. I've made the Taco Rice (serve it with cornbread - yummy!), Crispy Baked Chicken, Saucy Oven Pork Chops (recipe from website), Cheeseburger Quiche (also from website), and Cheese-Stuffed Shells. I made 80 shells last time I made them and you freeze them in rigid containers and they don't stick together and to cook them, you just take out however many you need in the morning and put them in the fridge and at dinnertime, put them in a cooking dish with spaghetti sauce on the bottom (I use Ragu!) and cover with more sauce and bake. Absolutely delicious!
This is a great way to have homecooked meals without having to cook every night. I really enjoy doing it! God bless you, Nanci and Tara!
PS Nanci and Tara also do conferences where they give a demonstration of their cooking methods. I'd love to see one of those - they also have a great sense of humor! With 7 kids between them, they really know what it's like to have a chaotic dinner hour!
Cooking this way saves you time and money and gives your family great meals. I can see that this would be useful for anyone - from young singles or newly-married to families with children at home to empty nesters! You won't be disappointed with this book!

Dinner for Busy Moms: Easy Strategies for Getting Your Family to the Table (Simple Solutions for Families) Review

This isn't a cook book (although there are recipes at the end), it's advice on how to get your family to the dinner table in an easy, trouble-free way. As we've all heard, eating dinner together as a family is one of the best things you can do for your kids. However, in our increasingly busy world that's seems to be getting harder and harder to do, as kids rush off to sports, dance and other outside activities. This book gives strategies to get families back to the table by whatever means necessary.
I really liked how the author started out by letting us know she was a real person who understood how difficult it was to sit down as a family and have a peaceful dinner, and had dealt with screaming kids throwing food on the floor. It gave me hope that this book was going to give some real life ideas for making dinner more enjoyable, and it does just that.
There are more than just quick and easy eating ideas, there are a lot of tips about improving family togetherness, getting kids interested in cooking, how to deal with picky eaters, organizing your kitchen and how to approach grocery shopping. There are also guidelines like remembering to use manners and making kids set the table and clean up after eating. I loved that the author includes some ideas for topics of conversations that can get everyone interacting.
The book addresses facts about how important it is to make family mealtime a priority, but it's not done in a condescending way, nor does it make parents feel guilty if they aren't able to do it every night of the week. I liked the interesting facts and pictures that were interspersed throughout the book as side boxes, it got the information across without overwhelming me. My favorite part of the book was the "Mom Tip" boxes, tips from regular moms, that were almost on every page.
A lot of the information is common sense, but having it all spelled out with bullet points is a nice reminder and a good push to get started, even if it's only one night a week. However, it really seems to be written for a novice, I mean at one point the author reminds us not to store the cleaning products by the food. There wasn't really any new information for me, so if you are already pretty organized in the kitchen I don't know that you are going to get any innovative ideas from this book.
There are some contradictions throughout the book, which I found frustrating. On one page the author would advise you to take your kids grocery shopping with you to help pick out foods they'd eat, and on the next page you're being told to leave the kids at home when you grocery shop so you can get it done faster. Then the author is telling you that canned vegetables are full of sodium and you should buy fresh or frozen instead, and then later suggests that to cut prep time you should buy canned vegetables. I would have liked more consistency.
There is also a push for pre-packaged meals, which I understand saves time, but if you're goal is to eat healthy, that's not really helpful. I wish there were more time saving tips on how to prepare wholesome meals. However, the author does cover information about healthy eating and how to read labels.
This book is much more than just how to make a quick dinner, it focuses on bringing your family to the table, stocking your pantry, shopping smart and being organized. Overall, there's some repetition and I think this book could have been half the size and still gotten the information across. The contradictions and lack of focus on eating healthy was a little discouraging. Still it's a good read for a beginner who needs to start from scratch in getting her kitchen organized and her family all together at the table.

Make-Ahead Meals Made Healthy: Exceptionally Delicious and Nutritious Freezer-Friendly Recipes You Can Prepare in Advance and Enjoy at a Moment's Notice Review

I like the concept of making meals ahead and having them in the freezer for those busy times or when I just don't feel like cooking. An issue I've had with some make-ahead cookbooks is that so many of the recipes rely on canned condensed "cream of" soups and other processed ingredients, and end up being high in fat, starches, and sodium.
This cookbook is different with its focus on real, healthier ingredients, all of which can be found at any larger grocery store. The recipes themselves are not complicated so cooks of any level will be able to master them. Included are casseroles, meats, poultry, and seafood; soups, stews, and chilis; side dishes and vegetarian options, breads, rolls, and pizzas; appetizers, breakfast dishes, desserts, and sauces and condiments.
The book starts with helpful tips on freezing and organizing for a cooking session. While one doesn't have to spend an entire day cooking for a month, suggestions are given for making multiple dishes at the same time in order to have several meals ready for the week(s) ahead.
There are several recipes I look forward to trying, including an unusual butternut squash and chard lasgagne, three-bean Italian minestrone soup, turkey sausage and broccoli rabe calzones, low-carb mini quiche, creamy turkey casserole with broccoli and cauliflower, raspberry-lavender crumb cake, and dark chocolate mint cake. I did make a modified version of the All-Occasion Sloppy Janes recipe with good results.
There are many color photographs which always makes a cookbook nicer and although it isn't spiral bound, it does lay open while in use which I also appreciate. This is a cookbook I recommend for those who like to plan ahead and have meals ready in the freezer that are also healthy.
I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited, nor was a positive review required.

The Six O'Clock Scramble: Quick, Healthy, and Delicious Dinner Recipes for Busy Families Review

I bought this when I returned to work when my daughter was 10 months old. I initially bought it for the downloadable shopping lists, but instead of going by week, I go by seasons, flip through to find 2-3 recipes that jump out at me, and buy the ingredients for those. The next week, I pick up where I left off. The meals have simple ingredients, interesting flavors, and are easy to prepare. 2 minor things: the meals are 30 minutes to prepare, but may take longer to cook, so keep an eye on that. Also, some of the recommended dish sizes are on the small side, so I sometimes size up (9x13 instead of 8x11, for instance) to make sure that it fits well without bubbling over.

The Weeknight Survival Cookbook: How to Make Healthy Meals in 10 Minutes Review

I am very pleased with this book: it is simple, the recipes can easily be modified, and best of all: there are shopping lists. I find that a large part of my meal executing woes are caused by not having time to plan and make lists. The foods are very middle of the road: not too gourmet, not too many processed foods. A couple meals a week are vegetarian, but carb watchers can add a fish fillet or chicken or something to the meal easily. Lots of veggies are included too. After purchasing a similar book that ended up suggesting I make "duck tacos" this book is a winner. Tip: take it to an office supply store and have the cover laminated and have it spiral-bound for easy use.

The Guy Can't Cook Review

I bought this book for my fiance, and I have to admit I find myself looking at recipes in it even more than him. So far I've done two of them, and they were both a hit. The one was a meatloaf, and my entire family loved it. So much so even that my mom stole the recipe and made it (my dad hates her meatloaf), I laughed when they called a week later and said it was the best meatloaf she'd ever made. There's also some neat tips throughout the book, like how to tell how well done a steak is by comparing it to your hand. This is a catch all book with a wide variety of recipes to fit every meal and skill level. Highly reccomended!

The Once-a-Week Cooking Plan: The Incredible Cooking Program That Will Save You 10 to 20 Hours a Week (and Have Your Family Begging for More) Review

This book purports to help you save time and money in the kitchen while enjoying a variety of foods. You may save some time following the processes outlined here, but you definitely won't save money. It is definitely NOT for the home cook who is on a budget.
The author gives several weeks worth of recipes for you to cook once and eat all week. Unfortunately, most of the weeks use the same ingredients over and over (and over). For example, there is fish week and out of the 5 menus given, salmon is the main dish in 3.
This book will also NOT help you save money--there is steak week where you are supposed to purchase *13* rib-eye steaks. (Hey--if I could afford to buy 13 steaks at once, I could also probably afford to pay someone to cook for me!)
Most of the other freeze-ahead cookbooks I have seen have practical advice on saving money and time at the grocery store. This book relies too heavily on expensive prepared ingredients (the author recommends buying pre-cooked chicken, for example, to save even more time). I can't recommend this for anyone trying to save money.

Make Ahead Meals (Good Food at Home) Review

This book is another installment in Seller Publishing's Good Food at Home cookbook series has busy cooks in mind with recipes that are formulated for making ahead of time for easier meal preparation and flexibility with an ever-changing schedule. Each recipe has an icon indicating whether all or part of it can be done the morning of the day it is to be used, one or even several days before, or prepared and put in the freezer for a month or two later.
I especially like the idea of making meals for the freezer that can be used later so I'm always looking for new recipes to use in this way. I made the Pizza Potpie which uses the prepared pizza crust that comes in a cylinder in the grocery store dairy case and it was well-received by my family. This particular dish can be made up to a week ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator, or can be frozen for later.
While there are no photos in the book and it doesn't lay open very well, the recipes themselves seem to be tasty, nutritious, and easy to make. For the most part the recipes use ingredients easily found in local grocery stores and even those few that require something unique shouldn't be a problem if one has access to a larger grocery store that has ethnic food sections (Asian, Mexican, etc.). The recipes include everything from drinks and appetizers to main courses, salads, and desserts.
Other recipes I've tagged to try in the near future include Greek Meatballs With Mediterranean Sauced Penne, Tomato-Basil Tortellini, and Chicken Tortilla Soup.
I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited nor was a positive review required. If I didn't like the book I would say so.

I am pretty upset. I just ordered a brand new cookbook, followed the recipe for a triple batch of the artichoke chicken casserole (which was about $50 worth of supplies. I knew better...I knew there was no way that 1 1/2 cups of uncooked rice would be able to reconstitute with the amount of liquid in the sauce. But, I trusted the book. What a disaster. I am about to call Papa John's. Here is the corrected cookbook (sorry, I didn't think to check for corrections since I just bought the book).
Woops, there are 45 PAGES OF CORRECTIONS!!!! Seriously? How did this book make it through to publishing? Whoever edited it should be fired. If you go to the dream dinners website there is a link with all of the corrections.
Here are the recipes that have erros:

Simple Food for Busy Families: The Whole Life Nutrition Approach Review

I bought this book thinking it would contain RECIPES for families that were interested in the whole foods approach. It does seem to be a very interesting book, but really it is a nutrition book about conversion from the Standard American Diet (SAD) to the whole foods approach. I am re-selling this book because I have already been "converted", I was just looking for some new recipes. It was probably my fault for not reading the description of the book well enough, but I did want other potential buyers to beware.

The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids' Favorite Meals Review

This book is truly amazing. I have two children who won't eat a mini-carrot between them, and they are now downing veggie after veggie without suspecting a thing!! Here is the funny thing- it works on my husband too! He claims he doesn't like sweet potatoes, but he has eaten them in so many things now- I just wait and tell him afterwards (haha, guess what you just ate?!). Do I feel guilty about sneaking veggies? Not at all! Whatever I can do to help my family be healthier, I would do in a heartbeat. I have a couple of hints- first of all, buy all of your veggies at once and spend about 3 hours one afternoon once per month making the five most common veggie purees. Pour them into individual serving size freezer bags and then put all of the little bags into a gallon bag (one per type of puree), label them, and you are good to go! This is much easier than trying to puree veggies for each meal, it would become so time-consuming that you would be tempted to change your mind at the last minute and make something easier (and less healthy). I grab a bag out of the freezer, quickly defrost and then stir it in with the kids mac n' cheese, chocolate pudding, and all sorts of other "treat food" that all of a sudden become vitamin-rich dishes. I also pre-make some of the breading and flour mix too, and keep them vacuum-packed...it really simplifies things at dinnertime. Likewise, I make the breakfast cookies in a triple recipe, and save them and freeze them for a quick, easy and healthy breakfast. The meat recipes in this book are also excellent- the sloppy joes, meatballs, and the meatloaf- as well as the baked ziti and the pizza- are especially fabulous. This is the first book that I have felt compelled to write a review about, but I felt I absolutely had to do it! We have been eating almost exclusively on recipes from this book for a month now and we all feel so much healthier. Kudos to Missy Chase Lapine! Thank you!

Quick, Cheap Comfort Food: 100+ Fresh Recipes for Meals in a Hurry (100 Fresh Recipes for Meals in) Review

This cookbook is a collection of easy and affordable recipes with an emphasis on main dish meals with some salads, side dishes, and desserts included. Each recipe comes with a "cent" icon to indicate approximate cost per serving with most, according to the book, costing less than $3 per serving. There are also icons to indicate whether the dish can be made ahead, those suitable for crock pot cooking, and those that take as little as 15 "hands-on" minutes to prepare.
My concern at first was that this might be another "quick and easy" collection of recipes that relied on canned condensed cream soups but thankfully, it isn't one of those. While it isn't exactly "health food" fare, the recipes can be easily adapted with low-fat, low-sodium versions of some ingredients and can have more fresh vegetables included instead of canned. In reading through the cookbook, it seemed that all the recipes were easy to prepare and used familiar ingredients one could find at a local grocery store. The only recipe I tried so far was the sloppy joes and my family gave it a thumbs-up. I look forward to trying other recipes such as the Mac 'n' Jack baked macaroni and cheese that uses five different cheeses, including pepper jack, and the Southeast Asian Chicken Salad that uses a store-bought rotisserie chicken. I also like that many of the recipes can be doubled with the extras frozen for another meal.
The only negatives for me with this cookbook is that there are no photos and the book does not lay open easily. (There should be a law that all cookbooks be spiral or ring bound so they lay flat while in use, but I will save that debate for another time.) However, the recipes themselves are just what the title promises: quick, cheap comfort food that will appeal to family members of all ages.
I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited nor was a positive review required. If I didn't like the book I would say so.
