The Vegan Table: 200 Unforgettable Recipes for Entertaining Every Guest at Every Occasion Review

Some background - This past mid-April, my husband and I attended the 5-Day McDougall Program in Santa Rosa, CA. Colleen was there as one of the chefs giving a cooking demo/lesson to help us learn how to cook food for our new healthy diet. My husband has always been an omnivore and swore he would never give up meat (but he was willing to attend the 5-day session with me). I have been what I call a fat 'imperfect vegan' for over 20 years (cheese, butter and oil were my vices). Enter Colleen. She prepared a few dishes out of this new book and passed around servings for us to eat. My hubby said: Babe, if we can eat like this all the time, I'll never miss the meat. And I agreed. We adopted a lowfat vegan diet that week, and have not looked back. I have cooked several of the recipes that Colleen gave us that week (all from the book) and they are all yummy. I have ordered the book because I want more. Colleen, I hope you are reading this: You are a wonderful, witty, talented chef. My husband and I loved your your cooking, and your wonderful sense of humor. Dr McDougall, Mary, Jeff, and Doug helped us adopt this new healthy diet, but you definitely sealed the deal. The 'No-queso Quesadillas' have been our go-to snack when we need a little something-something, now! Since April 15, I have effortlessly lost 15 lbs and my hubby has lost 12. Thank you SO much! We hope to see you again!

The South Beach Diet Parties and Holidays Cookbook: Healthy Recipes for Entertaining Family and Friends Review

I got this right before Thanksgiving, which I would be hosting for the first time, and the few recipes that I've tried turned out great! I served the stuffing, the green beans amadine, and the butternut squash, and they all went over quite well. My mom (who is really hard to please) enjoyed them all and commended me on serving such a healthy Thanksgiving meal. What I also like about this book are the many dessert recipes. I tried the ranger cookies today and MAN, are they good! Can't wait to try the cheesecake, and the pumpkin pie. Highly Recommended.

Finger Food: Bite-Sized Snacks to Share with Friends (Laurel Glen Little Food Series) Review

I've been looking for a good book of finger food for awhile and was happy to find this one. Usually, the recipes for finger food are too exotic or time comsuming, this book has a few of those but there are plenty that are not too complex. Finger Food also has a range of ethnic styles, such as Mexican, Asian & American flavored foods.

Football Food Review

Food is an integral part of the football experience whether it comes as part of a stadium parking lot tail-gate event, accompanies a home gathering to watch the big game, or smuggled in to be enjoyed with fans in the bleacher seats. Co-authored by cooking instructor, food writer, and Certified Kansas City Barbecue Judge Kellie Lawless and football enthusiast Mali Brocke (who is an Executive Chef and owner of a Santa Barbara-based catering company and has been cooking for gridiron events for decades), "Football Food is a handy little portable cookbook packed from cover to cover with 'kitchen cook friendly' recipes ranging from Rib Eye Steaks with Salsa; Fish Tacos; Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches; and Beer Can Chicken; to Onion-Cheddar Corn Bread; Chili Chaser Soup; Tailgate Toffee; and Spiked Hot Chocolate. Dream Dinners: Turn Dinnertime into Family Time with 100 Assemble-and-Freeze Meals Review

I am pretty upset. I just ordered a brand new cookbook, followed the recipe for a triple batch of the artichoke chicken casserole (which was about $50 worth of supplies. I knew better...I knew there was no way that 1 1/2 cups of uncooked rice would be able to reconstitute with the amount of liquid in the sauce. But, I trusted the book. What a disaster. I am about to call Papa John's. Here is the corrected cookbook (sorry, I didn't think to check for corrections since I just bought the book).
Woops, there are 45 PAGES OF CORRECTIONS!!!! Seriously? How did this book make it through to publishing? Whoever edited it should be fired. If you go to the dream dinners website there is a link with all of the corrections.
Here are the recipes that have erros:

Jewish Cooking Boot Camp: The Modern Girl's Guide to Cooking Like a Jewish Grandmother Review

You take chances when you order a book sight unseen.
That being said, I urge readers to use caution with this book, especially if you are planning to prepare a meal according to Jewish Dietary Laws. Many of the recipes are "kosher style" and mix dairy and meat products in the same recipe, or suggest the pairing of a dairy recipe as a side dish to a meat one.
But the worst offense is the recipe for a crab salad that is meant to be served before the Yom Kippur fast. Come on! The author specifically recommends that you eat a specifically non-kosher food before the holiest day of the year. Yes, I know there is fake crab that can be used. But that is not mentioned as an optionin the recipe. And there is another page that lists what foods are kosher and which are not, but it is not referenced on this page.
If this were a regular cookbook that was not titled as "Jewish", I'd just ignore the recipe. But I question why it had to be included in the first place.
With only 50 recipes in the book, it wasn't a great bargain anyway. I got Denise Phillips' new release in the same package. I highly recommend her book as a far better value and more authentic. Go with "New Flavours of the Jewish Table" if you are looking for a brand-new cookbook.

Cooking Like a Goddess: Bringing Seasonal Magic into the Kitchen Review

Cooking Like a Goddess brings spirituality into the heart of the home. In her unique way, Johnson shows us that our kitchens can become sacred space, both physically and emotionally. Her suggestions run the gamut from creating altars to designing aprons to transforming the mundane act of cooking into personal ritual.
Her recipes reflect the moods of each season, blending seasonally available foods into meals that bring home to us the rebirth of Spring, the freshness and heat of Summer, the earthy abundance of Autumn and the hearth-centeredness of Winter. The recipes are simple and accessible, and absolutely delicious!
In addition to recipes, Johnson offers a variety of ways to make the kitchen a place to work, play , pray & meditate. She provides an extensive list of resources to aid the individual in that goal.
Throughout the book, the reader feels as if she is sitting in Johnson's kitchen, talking and sharing over a cup of tea. Her writing style is personal and simple, while her ideas are powerful, spirit-centered and sometimes playful.
Cooking Like a Goddess is a wonderful companion book to her previous co-authoredCelebrating the Great Mother. Read this book and you'll never see your kitchen, and your cooking, in the same way again.

Fine Cooking Appetizers: 200 Recipes for Small Bites with Big Flavor Review

Fine Cooking Appetizers / 978-1-600-85330-2
I don't entertain much, so I'm not one for cooking lots of appetizers for parties, but I do like "bite size" recipes for storing and packing into family lunches and the like. If you're looking for an appetizer cookbook, this one definitely has a lot to offer: the recipes are intuitively organized, easy to understand, and well-formatted, and most of the recipes on offer show a corresponding finished picture. The ingredients lists are well-organized, and in multi-step recipes it's always clear which ingredients are used for each step of the process.
Of the 200 recipes on offer, a lot of them are multi-ingredient dishes that are sure to impress. I suppose this is a good thing if you are looking for new things to try and don't want more of the same old obvious stuff, but I can imagine that some of these dishes might be complicated enough to put off a lot of home chefs, and may be exotic-tasting enough to put off some of the guests. There's a strong overlap of traditional comfort food, though, such as the creamy fudge (with multiple flavor variations) and the triple-shot eggnog. The pictures themselves all look absolutely delicious, and combined with the stellar formatting, this cookbook is a joy to browse through.
As an appetizer cookbook, this one really stands out for variety - among the expected savory and tart fare, there are a lot of sweet flavors as well. I think a regular entertainer would get a great deal of use out of this book. For my purposes (lunch packings and varied dinner sides), the book is slightly less useful, but I was still able to find a lot of valuable recipes here, and I do recommend this highly to others.
NOTE: This review is based on a free Advance Review Copy of this book provided through NetGalley.

100 Low Fat Small Meal and Salad Recipes: The Complete Book of Food Counts Cookbook Series Review

As the title of the book says there are 100 low-fat recipes. I liked the emphasis on small meals and salads. As a single person it is hard to find recipes for small quanities. Afterall, I don't want to eat the same item an entire week. Though I tend to avoid recipes with eggplant and mushrooms I had no problem finding new things to try. The directions are simple and easy to follow.

ExtraVeganZa: Original Recipes from Phoenix Organic Farm Review

I know, you're wondering about whether you should get this book, since it doesn't have many reviews yet and this is the first one. But let me tell you, I have over 150 cookbooks, and this one ranks in the best of them. It doesn't matter if you are a vegan, omnivore, or lacto-ovo-vegetarian - you will enjoy these recipes if you like vegetables, healthy grains, nuts, and legumes, the occasional sweet, and new and inventive ways to cook your favorite foods. Vegan foods, luckily, can be eaten by anyone - so just kick back and enjoy; this book makes it especially easy. Some recipes are wheat-free and others, like the vegetable mochi casserole, are gluten-free. The casserole is delicious, and the lemon sesame kale is my new favorite way to eat it. The Thai noodle salad is one of the best Thai dishes I have ever made. My boyfriend and I have greatly enjoyed these recipes, and I am confident you will, too.

The Complete Do Ahead Cookbook (Today's Gourmet) Review

Over the past 25 years, I've purchased a lot of cookbooks and I love to cook. When I ordered this book I expected a lot of mediocre recipes that could be done ahead and in a hurry. What a wonderful surprise. Every recipe I've made has been outstanding and received rave reviews from my family. I don't like meatloaf - but I loved the Piquant Little Meat Loaves. Cornish Hens Mandarin was excellent and Company Chicken-Artichoke pleased even grumpy teenagers. The final and supreme compliment came when I visited my mom (recovering from surgery in Iowa) and I cooked one of the recipes. She is a superb (extremely particular) cook and said, "This is a cookbook that finally makes sense." She liked that the first recipe was large and leftovers were utilized in the series of recipes that followed. Thank you so much for a group of fresh and exciting recipes!
