i bought this book after my dad had a heart attack and i needed to cook healthier foods. the title isn't kidding when it says meals in minutes. there are four categories that the recipes fall into: new classics, planned-overs, shopping cart recipes, and express-ipes. planned-overs utilize left-overs from other recipes, shopping cart recipes only require six common ingredients and are easy to remember, and express-ipes only take a maximum of twenty-five mintues including prep time and cooking. at the top of every recipe it lists the serving size, prep time, and cooking time. at the bottom of each recipe there is a nutrional analysis that tells you the amount of calories, protein, fat, carbs, sodium, etc.

American Heart Association Low-Salt Cookbook, Second Edition: A Complete Guide to Reducing Sodium and Fat in Your Diet Review

This cookbook contains a decent variety of recipes, but seems more geared towards low fat cooking than low sodium cooking. If you're casually trying to reduce sodium a bit this may be fine, but if you're on a very strict diet many of the recipes probably won't be acceptable. I found many of the recipes a bit unimaginative and lacking excitement, being perhaps geared towards people who find mild picante sauce too spicy. And the book itself sounds like it was written by a government lawyer trying to avoid litigation with frequent use of awkward terms such as "acceptable vegetable oil" in recipes. There are better choices out there.

American Heart Association Quick & Easy Cookbook: More Than 200 Healthful Recipes You Can Make in Minutes Review

I have to give it 4 stars because it doesn't have any pictures. I am basically a picture person - I like to see what the end result should look like.
I have tried other low fat cook books before and have been alittle disappointed with them all. I found only a few recipes that I ended up liking and still occasionally use. I tried have tried 5 recipes from this book so far, and so far they have been very good.
The recipes have plenty of seasoning in them so they don't taste bland. And some of the recipes are common sense ones that use the old rule of substitution ie - instead of oil use apple sauce, instead of sour cream use fat free yogurt etc.
In any case this book is definately a good buy at a good price. I would definately recommend it.

I actually came across this book at the library. I love to check out cookbooks at the library to try out before purchasing them. There have been more times that I've purchased cookbooks that turned out to be a flop. But in this case, every recipe I tried was great!
Our whole family loved the recipes. I have picky kids and they were content with the recipes I tried. The Chicken Parmesan was so easy and so tasty. So was the Blueberry Crisp.
One of the things I liked about this cookbook was that not only did it include the nurtrition facts per serving (calories and fat content) but it also included ideas as to how to make it a meal. How many times have you made something and tried to figure out what to pair with it? For example, on the chicken parmesan, the book suggested to pair it with whole wheat spaghetti and a spinach salad. For the fiesta cobb salad, the book said to make it with whole wheat breadsticks, and bananas combined with unsweetened frozen peaches. What great ideas!
I loved this cookbook so much that I ended up buying it. It's great to have a cookbook dedicated to making families healthier. And it actually has recipes that families would love. You won't be disappointed!

My mother used this book and two others by Harriet Roth to help my father lower his cholesterol four years ago. My son was three then, and he loved the food, too. Lots of tasty recipes in Roth's books, along with some interesting commentary and common sense about eating and preparing food. Some of the recipes can be pretty labor intensive, especially for the two week diet that helps dramatically lower your cholesterol, but it does work - my father's level dropped significantly in that two weeks, and he lost 10 pounds, too.

Due to a recent heart condition my doctor told me to lose weight. I wanted to go on a low-fat, low-cholesterol, low-sugar and low-sodium diet, but I thought by doing all of that I would never eat good foods again. Boy, was I wrong! I purchased the American Heart Association's Low-Fat, Low-Cholesterol Cookbook and have never tasted better foods. I have not found a recipe that I don't like! Using these recipes and an excellent walking program I have lost almost 50 pounds between February and August 1999. Several of my favorite recipes from this cookbook are: Crispy Oven-Fried Chicken, Chili, Vegetable-Beef Burgers, Spicy Baked Pork Chops and (my favorite) Meat Loaf with Roasted Vegetables (mmmmmmm). My heart is now as strong as ever and I owe it all to my walking program and recipes from the American Heart Association's Low-Fat, Low Cholesterol Cookbook. One other note, two months after I strated using these recipes, my doctor took me off cholesterol medication.

The New American Heart Association Cookbook, 7th Edition Review

Last February 1999 I was hospitalized for several weeks with a heart problem. After I was discharged I knew I had to do something about my weight. I purchased the New American Heart Association Cookbook and changed my eating habits. Using the recipes from this cookbook, along with an excellent walking program, I have lost almost 50 pounds between the end of February 1999 and August 1999. There are way too many good recipes for me to list, but several of my favorites are: Chicken Fajitas (I use the low-fat tortilla wrappers that you can find in any store), Crispy Baked Chicken, Asian Grilled Chicken and Vegetarian Chili. The best recommendation I can make for this book is to tell you that my doctor now tells me that I have a very healthy heart and I sincerely believe that I owe it to my walking program and the excellent recipes from The New American Heart Association Cookbook.

The only things missing from this addition are a spiral binding (to help it lay flat) and full color photos of each recipe.
Some of my family's favorites include: Blackberry & Balsamic Chicken, Grilled Sesame Chicken, Cowboy Steak with Portobello Mushrooms, Slow Cooker Beef and Red Beans, Baked Pork Chops with Apple Dressing, Braised Lentil and Vegetable Medley, Strawberry Orange Sauce, Chocolate Chip Banana Bread, Flan Caramel, Potato Skin Nachos, and Vegetable Beef Soup.

I purchased this book because we have cholesterol issues in the family, and so far, I've made 3 or 4 recipes involving beef. They've been very dry and not visually appealing (with kids, this is important!:)) I've found most of the entrees have been time consuming to prepare as well, lots of ingredients. Truthfully, the only thing I'm enjoying from the book is the information in the beginning about cholesterol and how it affects your health- lots of great informative points on this but the recipes are just not very tasty. I also own American Heart Association's Meals in Minutes, which is much better.

This book has come in so handy since we have had to make lifestyle changes due to high cholesterol. The best thing about this book is that it uses pretty basic ingredients that you can find at any grocery store. Other books I have with low cholesterol recipes had odd ingredients that I just won't keep in stock normally. The recipes offered by the AHA cookbook identify with "real", everyday people making the lifestyle transition much easier than I originally thought. The final outcome: Palate tantalizing dishes appropriate for the whole family.
