1,001 Best Slow-Cooker Recipes: The Only Slow-Cooker Cookbook You'll Ever Need Review

This is the second book I have bought in the '1001 Recipes' series, and I haven't been disappointed with either one! The recipes in this slow cooker book are delicious, and they are broken down into well-organized chapters. I especially like that there are two chapters for vegetarian recipes...there is something for everyone! Though not explicitly advertised as a low-fat book, this book has recipes that have an aim to be healthy and lower in fat and calories. Every recipe has nutritional information, which is very helpful. I think that the only thing I would change about the book would be to add a breakfast chapter. Other than that, great book!

Sleep On It: Prepare Delicious Meals the Night Before That You Can Pop In the Oven the Next Day Review

Gordon, the Innkeeper of Nantucket House in Chatham on Cape Cod, has collected recipes from Inns and B & B's around the country that can be prepared the night before and cooked the next day.
Naturally many of these are breakfast or brunch oriented and most are baked, like Spiced Pear French Toast, Cinnamon Crunch Coffee Cake, Seafood Brunch Strata, Bacon and Egg Lasagna, Easy Wild Rice Quiche.
A short appetizer chapter includes cheese balls and dips as well as chicken wings and Mushroom Rolls and for dinner there's Sweet Potato Casserole, Salmon Mexicana, or Baked Barbecued Beef Brisket.
Some recipes use shortcut ingredients like canned soups or frozen bread dough and the variety of sources means there's something to appeal to everyone. This is a folksy book which will chiefly appeal to those who like to entertain for breakfast or brunch.

Super Suppers Cookbook Review

First off, this cookbook's presentation is simply beautiful. There are many wonderful photographs of the finished product (something most freezer cookbooks lack). The one issue I have with this cookbook is that the directions are only given for 1 meal. Dream Dinners gives directions for one and three meals and Don't Panic, Dinner's in the Freezer gives one meal, three meals and nine meals. Having the ingredients already ratioed for larger bulk cooking meals (which is really a basis of freezer cooking for me) is a nice addition and sorely missed in this book. There is a nice selection of meals to choose from in this cookbook. There are not repetitive of the books already out there. Don't Panic, Dinner's in the Freezer is still my fave but this is a welcome addition to my kitchen even though I will have to write double and triple calculations in the margins

Taste of Home Mom's Best Made Easy Review

I have a gazillion cookbooks. This one is really good and photos are excellent. I enjoy the fact that I can cook from a page or two for a meal. For example, I made the chicken parmigiana, broccoli fettucine alfredo, and very easy apple cinnamon turnovers by flipping to a page when planning a meal. Delicious and not very time consuming. The layout of the book is super. The meals are classic! Love it! Moreso, my family loves it.

Fix-It and Enjoy-It 5-Ingredient Recipes: Quick and Easy--for Stove-top and Oven Review

This cookbook is ringbound so that it will lay flat; therefore it is practical to use. (Why aren't all cookbooks like this?)
The scope of five ingredients or less means that the vast majority of recipes will be quick and uncomplicated. Most of the ingredients are fairly common and are likely to be on hand in a decent cook's kitchen.
There are multiple recipes per page, so you get a lot of bang for your buck.
Note: this version should not be confused with this author's other five ingredient cookbook which is intended for slow cookers.

Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook: Feasting with Your Slow Cooker Review

Yes, crock pots, once considered a kind of quaint relic of the seventies, are making a comeback. And why not? The basic idea is that you take a bunch of ingredients, throw them into the crock pot in the morning, and by dinnertime, voila--you have something hot, fragrant, and tasty. And what's more, a lot of the foods cooked this way taste even better as leftovers.
The strength of this cookbook is in the sheer volume of recipes provided, and in their overall simplicity. These truly are "fix it and forget it" types of dishes, including a lot of soups, chiles, and simple stews. Surely out of the 800+ recipes here anyone who purchases this book will find enough winners to make it a worthwhile buy.
Potential buyers should be forewarned, however, that this is by no means *haute cuisine*. Lots of the recipes include generous glops of canned creamed soups, dry soup mixes, canned vegetables, "American" cheese, and other gastronomical abominations. The point is, however, that there are so many recipes included that it's easy to skip over those and go on to ones that appear more promising.
The bottom line is that during the short time that I have owned this book, it has proven itself incredibly valuable and useful. My wife and my family are very glad that I picked it up, and that I brought the ol' crock pot out of its previously semi-retired state.

The Good-to-Go Cookbook: Take-along Food, Quick Suppers, and Satisfying Snacks for On-The-Go Families Review

As the title implies, this cookbook would be useful for folks looking to prepare meals without simply resorting to microwaving frozen dinners. Some of the included recipes are the sorts of things that you might find in a club recipe book and in fact, I've seen variations of several of them. This is not a
"whole foods" type of cookbook: it makes heavy use of processed foods. For example, there is a recipe for a "pizza" which uses canned biscuit dough for the crust. The recipes are devoid of nutritional information so you'll have to use your own judgment in that regard. If you already have a collection healthy, quick meals, then this cookbook is not for you. On the other hand, if you are at a loss for how to feed a family that's frantically on the go, this book might be for you.

Quick Fixes with Mixes: Fast Cooking with Bagged, Bottled & Frozen Ingredients (Southern Living Magazine) Review

Although this book has some VERY good recipes, I was extremely disappointed and felt like I was misled by the title. I would expect a book titled "Quick Fixes with Mixes" to contain recipes with some great mixes and only a few add'l items. Not so with this book--example: Slow Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup: Out of 14 ingredients (plus optional garnishes), there are only THREE that are marked as the "mixes"...frozen whole kernel corn, canned tomato paste and canned diced tomatoes. You must still provide skinned, boned, cubed chicken breasts, chopped onion, pressed garlic cloves, 2 cans chicken broth (don't know why they didn't count this as a "mix" like the frozen corn, etc.) cumin, salt, chili powder, ground red pepper, black pepper, bay leaf, and finally, 4 corn tortillas cut into strips & baked in oven. And, the "prep time" was listed as 10 minutes! Another example, Beef Vegetable soup had 4 "mixes" out of 13 ingredients: frozen mixed veggies, canned tomato sauce, canned diced tomatoes and a chicken bouillion cube. I would call these "convenience items" rather than "mixes".
Maybe I am spoiled because I had previously ordered similar books by Taste of Home, etc. and they were actually "Quick Fixes with Mixes"... I guess I let the good name of Southern Living keep me from looking as closely as I should have before clicking on "order". To make matters worse, I even ordered a 2nd copy of it to send to my daughter. Each book has 320 pages, so it's not really worth the hassle of returning, etc. so we are keeping them. As I said at the beginning, it DOES have some very good recipes that I'm sure we will try,so it's not a total loss as far as I'm concerned.

The Everything Quick Meals Cookbook: Whip up easy and delicious meals for you and your family (Everything (Cooking)) Review

This is typical of the other "Everything" books or "The Idiot's Guide", it's a comprehensive cookbook to cover 30 minute meals. As if you've not had enough of Rachael Ray and Robin Miller.
The biggest tip for any of the quick cooking books is to have a plan. Whether it's a plan of what to have for dinner or a plan how to use leftovers or a plan to make a menu. Either way it's what gets you going. So as soon as you hit the door from work you know what to start making. You're not standing gazing in the refrigerator as though you're a deer in headlights.
This is an OK cookbook, I like that it does give how many the meal serves, it includes prep times and cooking times up front. The recipes are not divided into those categories, you'll still have to scan all the recipes to figure out if you have 30 minute recipe or a 10 minute recipe (and yes there are 10 minute recipes in this book). And this cookbook is much better than the BHG "Off the Shelf" one.
If you want a cookbook divided into quick, quicker and quickest look at The Family Dinner Fix: Cooking for the Rushed, it's sorted that way.
An example of a recipe in this book is buying a rotisserie chicken from the supermarket, coming home and shredding it and then putting it over a bagged salad, adding drained mandarin oranges, golden raisins and italian salad dressing. Hummm...I don't know if that's much of a recipe? Another recipe to cook chicken thighs and then spread store bought salsa verde over them. There's are no suggestions for side dishes, accompanying dishes, etc. If I'm in such a hurry that I can't figure out to pour a jar of sauce over some cooked chicken thighs then I probably need help with the whole meal, not just one component of it.
I wasn't real impressed with this book. If it had been divided into menus or suggested side dishes then I would rate it a little higher. There are no pictures, there are 3-4 recipes crowded onto one page. It's printed on recycled paper so don't get the pages dirty or wet. Overall, it's what's expected of the Everything series books. I would spend my money on Saving Dinner: The Menus, Recipes, and Shopping Lists to Bring Your Family Back to the Table or The Food Nanny Rescues Dinner: Easy Family Meals for Every Day of the Week.
Another suggestion would be The Good-to-Go Cookbook: Take-along Food, Quick Suppers, and Satisfying Snacks for On-The-Go Families. They're in the similar vein as they cookbook but put together a little better. HTH.

Faster I'm Starving Review

Kevin Mills and his mother, Nancy Mills, who wrote "Help! My Apartment Has a Kitchen!" have now come up with another winner, "Faster! I'm Starving!" It's a fun and funny cookbook, well worth reading even if you never use a recipe from it. But you will - use the recipes, that is.
Limited preparation time is required for meals that Mills (the son) says can be finished within the timeframe of a sitcom. They advocate using bags of prewashed lettuce, precut fresh broccoli, cauliflower and other salad bar ingredients, frozen chopped onions, bottles of crushed fresh garlic and the "smaller and thinner" method of cooking (the more surface of a food that is exposed to heat, the faster it cooks).
Stir-frying, high-temperature roasting and gas grilling are some of their favorite methods of cooking, thus there are no stews or roast turkeys in their book. Although this is not a 3-5 ingredient cookbook, the following recipe give you an idea of the humor and simplicity of the recipes.
Black Bean Wraps
Serves: 4 (2 wraps per person)
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 4 minutes
Time-saving tip: Use cilantro-flavored olive oil and skip the cilantro.
Black Bean Wraps may sound like a new-age facial treatment (and if it removed blemishes, I'm sure people would use it, even if it left them smelling like a burrito.) But they're actually quick, homemade soft tacos. The ingredients are flexible, depending on what you have available. But if you serve them without the black beans, the name will be hard to justify.
3 scallions
1 large red bell pepper
½ cup fresh cilantro
2 15-ounce cans black beans
1 15-ounce can whole-kernel corn
1 4-ounce can diced green chiles
3 tablespoons olive or corn oil
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon black pepper
8 8-inch flour tortillas
Grated cheddar cheese (optional)
Hot pepper sauce or Tabasco Chipotle Pepper Sauce (optional)
Rinse and trim the scallions and cut them into ¼-inch pieces. Rinse the bell pepper, cut it in half, remove and discard the stem and seeds and then cut it into ¼-inch pieces. Rinse and pat dry the cilantro. Cut off and discard the stems and cut the leafy parts into ½-inch pieces. Drain the beans and rinse them under cold running water. Drain the corn and green chiles.
Put the scallions, bell pepper, cilantro, beans, corn and green chiles into a large bowl. Add the oil, vinegar, salt, garlic powder and black pepper and mix well and then set aside.
Remove the tortillas from their package, wrap them in a tea towel or paper towel and microwave on high for 1 minute. Transfer the tortillas to a serving plate. Spoon ½ to 2/3 cup of the bean mixture into the center of each tortilla. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese and hot pepper sauce, if using. Wrap each tortilla, folding it at the bottom so the filling doesn't fall out when it's held upright. Serve immediately.

The Family Dinner Fix: Cooking for the Rushed Review

This is the fourth book in the "Cooking for the Rushed" series by Sandi Richard and I think the best. She is the expert on meal planning. She mentions that the most stressful part of the day is dinner, and I can believe that because so many of us don't start thinking about what's for dinner until 5 minutes till six. But she has developed a system to change that.
The book has 10 weeks of meal plans, each divided into colors. The red and yellow meals are dinners that can be prepared in under 30 minutes. The green and blue meals are dinners that can be prepared in under 60 minutes. The average family spends 38 minutes preparing dinner each night. But at a glance you could easily see which meals you could have enough time to prepare and get out of the house in time.
This cookbook has some very nice pictures (all recipes had a full color picture, what a treat!). There are vegetarian substitution suggestions. The pages are glossy so splatters would clean up somewhat easily. She also gives suggestions on which meals are "having company" type meals, crockpot meals, there are calorie and nutritional information provided, there's an equipment list so you'll know all the pots and pans you need, and there are also food exchanges. All is great information that many many cookbooks don't provide.
Her recipe for Mexican Hamburgers calls for 90% lean ground beef but you could easily substitute turkey or tofu. It was delish; I loved the avocado salsa. There are also make ahead (freezer) suggestions for this recipe for those who like to do weekend cooking.
Most of the recipes call for a full meal suggestion. The red snapper with pineapple salsa, pecan wild rice and asparagus is a complete meal. And it's all ready in under 30 minutes.
All of the recipes use fresh ingredients. I didn't see any packaged foods (bottled BBQ sauce maybe) so her recipes by naturally being healthier and less fat will most certainly cause weight loss. They are not specifically low-fat but that is the usual outcome when you stop eating fast-food and start cooking with fresh, natural ingredients.
There were no unusual combinations, I think most people would have kids who'd very easily try these meals. We had the crispy chicken and the kids just raved. The secret ingredient was crushed crispy rice cereal. The serving suggestions were baby potatoes seasoned with garlic herb seasoning and a side salad. All very doable in the evening. It cooked in the oven so we could do homework in the meantime.
Her main suggestion is to get all your equipment out as soon as you get home, start the water boiling, etc before changing clothes. I hadn't thought of this but I can see where this would be a big motivator to continue cooking once you changed. I've found myself returning from the bedroom and just sighing because I now had to drag out pots and pans and start cooking. While not a big deal in itself, it's easier to jump in the car and go to a restaurant especially when the kids are begging. But after a few of these meals the kids will be begging for more home cooking!
There are grocery lists provided broken down by category. Each week has 5 recipes for the week not 7, I saw in another review that bothered someone. I find it doable because at least one night you want to have pizza and another you're out and about anyway.
She also has spice combinations for those spices you don't want to pay extra for (i.e. pumpkin pie spice). She has all kinds of suggestions and cooking terms that would make this book excellent for a young family getting started.
Check out www.cookingfortherushed.com to find more information.
Well worth the investment.

Kid Favorites Made Healthy (Better Homes and Gardens): 150 Delicious Recipes Kids Can't Resist (Better Homes & Gardens Cooking) Review

I think a more appropriate name for this book would be, "Kid Favorites Made Healthier". I was a bit disappointed at the lack of vegetable dishes... or at least ones my family would eat. Having said that, I have actually used this book a lot. The recipes are simple and easily adaptable, for example, I'll use whole grain pastas and tortillas instead of the regular "white" ones called for in the recipes. There are pictures of most of the recipes which is always nice. Potential purchasers should be aware that many of the dishes use store-bought time-savers which was a plus for me but may be a turn-off for others. All in all, a good cookbook with good recipes... not great, but there are some real gems that make it worth the purchase.

Dinner is Ready - 30 Meals in One Day Review

The book is titled 30 meals in one day but it's really not 30 different meals, her suggestion is to cook 2 sets of 15 meals. There are hundreds of recipes in this cookbook broken down by the way they're prepared, stove-top, oven, assemble, or slow-cooker. Her suggestion is to make 2 stove-top, 2 oven and 2 crock-pot meals and then 9 counter top assembled meals. That's 15 meals but you would double prepare them so it comes out to 30. And it really doesn't take much more effort to make 2 of something than one so a very good concept.
The down side is picking which of the 15 meals you want to prepare. This book uses software (purchased separately) to take full advantage of its potential. You'd really need the software to type in the 15 meals you want so it will print you a complete grocery list. Otherwise you'd have to take some time figuring out how many carrots you need or how much many green peppers, or how many eggs, etc and you'd have to do that with every ingredient and every single recipe and then double them. It would be very time consuming and if you miscalculated or missed an ingredient your cooking could come to an abrupt halt.
The book does not lay flat so her suggestion is to hand-write all the recipes and then lay them out so you can follow each recipe in sequence and not have to flip back and forth between 234 pages. That is also where the software would come in handy, just print the recipes you want to make.
After you've hand written out all your recipes the author suggests starting the first slow-cooker recipe. She says to start the hardest, longest recipes first but you have no way of really knowing which ones fall in that category because there are no prep or cook times listed up front. You'd have to read each and every recipe to get to the instructions that tell you if it's cooked for an hour, cooked for 15 minutes or not cooked at all and just assembled. You would think that would have been a very easy thing to add at the beginning of all the recipes since she probably has done it a hundred times. Many cookbooks list 15 minutes prep, 1 hr cook, etc so at a glance you know the timetable you're talking about. But anyway you start the slow-cooker recipe first then move on to filling the oven. Then you start your stove-top recipe. While all that is cooking you then move on to assembling recipes at the counter.

Amazon is having trouble getting reviews to appear on line in a timely manner so after writing a huge in-depth review it has never appeared. So I will wait until this is viewable by the public and then reiterate the review I did from before. I will add to this review, this is the 5th time I've tried to leave a review for this book and it never appear. Very strange.

Kraft Kitchens: Dinner On Hand Review

This book is loaded with really tasty and easy dinner ideas. Instead of saying exactly what the recipe calls for it gives you ideas of what to combine based on what you have on hand - no fancy ingredients to shop for!!! Also has really easy measuring (ie: a handful of vegies per person). The recipes are really quick to make and are easy enough for kids to help make supper. This book has taken the stress out of that "just home and have to get supper on the table hour!!!!"

The Food Nanny Rescues Dinner: Easy Family Meals for Every Day of the Week Review

I feed 6-7 people every day for dinner, sometimes more if one or two of my kids' friends are over. I think about food all day even when it's not meal time because I'm thinking about what to put together to make a cohesive meal, if I laid it out to thaw, if I have enough of it, if I have any leftovers that I can incorporate so as not to waste food. It is exhausting. I purchase absolutely any cookbook there is that will help me make meal planning, prep and cooking easier. So when I saw this book I had to have it.
The very first page was planning the weekly menu like I've been trying to do for years. This book is having Comfort Food on Monday, Italian on Tuesday, Fish & Meatless on Wednesday, Mexican Night on Thursday, Pizza Friday's, Grill Night on Saturday and Family Traditions on Sunday. I've been doing something similar but trying to make mine Meatless Monday's, [...]. But regardless of what you pick this is excellent meal planning advice. It gives yourself (and the kids and spouse) an idea of what to look forward to rather than coming home with pots and pans banging around with no idea of what to prepare.
That is what I liked about the Sandi Richard book too, The Family Dinner Fix: Cooking for the Rushed. She has similar ideas to Ms. Edmunds. I would use a calendar that you get free in the mail and write your "theme" across the top. Your themes might be different than the suggested themes in this book but either way come up with 7 themes and write them across the top of the calendar.
Now go to each chapter in this cookbook (or any other cookbook) and list a recipe that corresponds to that theme. List the page it is on and briefly write any side dishes that you would be serving with the main entree. Ms. Edmunds suggests making your menu first and then your grocery list second. I believe in making the grocery list first and then making meals from that. I try to buy what's on sale and then make meals from the sale foods rather than the other way around.
I made the white chicken chili that was listed under the Comfort Food section. It's intended to be a Monday meal but I think we had it on a Wednesday (oops!). LOL. It was very good. Also under each recipe is a conversation starter. It's a question you're to pose to the family around the dinner table to stimulate conversation. I actually purchased these from www.savingdinner.com and here they are free.
There are also bread recipes, side dishes, desserts, after school snacks, cooking tips, and other great ideas to get the family back to the dinner table. It's an awesome book. One of my better purchases. This is certainly a fantastic gift, wedding or otherwise. It would be a great gift for someone just starting to cook who needs ideas and instruction for getting a complete meal on the table.
Another good cookbook I like is Saving Dinner: The Menus, Recipes, and Shopping Lists to Bring Your Family Back to the Table by Leann Ely. It has shopping lists, menus, and great recipes to get started. It's not laid out with "theme" nights like the Food Nanny but it's good nevertheless.

Knack Healthy Snacks for Kids: Recipes for Nutritious Bites at Home or On the Go (Knack: Make It easy) Review

I got this for my preteen daughter, who is becoming very self-conscious about her body. So I educated her about what good foods and bad foods will do to our bodies. Putting good foods in our bodies will keep us healthy and this cookbook was a smash. That Acorn Squash recipe was our favorite...its now a staple we enjoy at least once a month. Great for Thanksgiving as well.
