Christianne's Herbal Kitchen: Fresh Herb Recipes for Body and Soul Review

I like this book. I recieved it as a gift over Thanksgiving from someone who knows that I prefer light cooking. I like recipes that focus on flavor in lighter fare like soups and salads/salad dressing. The book has these and also had sauces that looked pretty good, though I haven't tried those yet.
I tried the Eggless Ceasar and the Baby Beet Salads and the Chicken Vegetable with Pesto soup. The author knows how to use spice in dishes in way that makes them pretty unique from anything you's have at a restaurant.
There's a cocktail section that was pretty in depth. I used to bartend in NYC at a martini bar, and these were pretty sophisticated combos she had going. I'm most curious about the pomegranate sparkler. Pomegranate juice and booze is a tricky combo.
Besides what I mentioned there is a dessert section (lots of sorbet), an entree/ side dish section and a appetizers section. Everything used fresh herbs.
Personally I was really into the direct treatment that herbs get in the descriptory section of the book with both a historic and scientific shakedown. There were also some beauty tips throughout the book which was something I'd never seen before.
Overall, seems like an ideal book for entertaining. I'm giving it five stars because its full of interesting salads and light soups which are my most favorite things to cook. I also don't know squat about using herbs so it was really infomative in that sense.

The Everything Cookbook Review

I received this cookbook as a Christmas gift, and at first was slightly confused what what my frined was thinking, because I have absolutely zero cooking skill. But upon further inspection of the book, it's very interesting and actually goes as far as to make cooking fun for me. I do not know the first thing about cooking, and this book starts at the very basics...like how to properly thaw chicken and what different spices and herbs do. It actually gives you detalied pictures of how to cut up the meat if the recipe calls for you to 'julieanne' the chicken. The recipes are very basic, but every one I've tried so far has turned out great. And that's saying a lot for a very very very beginner cook like me! The only improvement I would make on the book is to make the pages laminated, and possibly make the binding spiral. It's kind of hard to keep the book open and I've spilled quite a few things on it already! Both are very minor drawbacks and I would highly recommend this book to a beginning cook!

The Spirited Vegetarian: Over 100 Recipes Made Lively with Wine and Spirits Review

To put this review into perspective for you, it is written by a serious student of cooking that has been actively studying food on their own for 25 years. I have been focusing on Italian food for the last 10 years. My favorite cookbook is "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute of America.
I purchased this book on a whim prior to embarking on a vegetarian lifestyle because I love to cook with alcohol and wanted to add more healthy meals into our family diet. I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this book from day one.
The author includes a nice wine chart in the front of the book for those of you that aren't familiar with all types of wine. I found it handy since I tend to stick to the Italian wines.
Once I saw the recipe for Limoncello (a family staple in our home) I was hooked. If you have never made this yourself give it a try. The recipe is very simple and the end result is addicting. The recipe for spaghetti with beets is amazing. I never liked beets until I made this dish. It now reappears monthly in my home. Likewise, the chilled prosecco and melon soup is wonderful. It is such a refreshing start to a meal on a hot day. How about a Sangria fruit salad, that is included as well.
My only complaint about this book is that it doesn't have the pretty pictures that I love. If you are vegan this is probably not the book for you. Although I have been about to successfully adapt some of the non-vegan recipes with trial and error. If you have been a vegan and a home cook for long time you can probably do the same thing with ease.

Kristen Suzanne's EASY Raw Vegan Soups: Delicious & Easy Raw Food Recipes for Hearty, Satisfying, Flavorful Soups Review

The recipes in this book are really good, and if that were the only criterion, I'd give this book 5 stars. I have really liked everything I've made. I don't mind that there are no pictures, either.
However, there is more to putting out a good recipe book than tasty recipes. Organization is important in order to produce a book that is easy to use. There is NO list of recipes in the table of contents, and NO index of recipe titles or of ingredients. This means you have to page through the entire recipe section to find 'Guacamole soup' or 'Summertime Corn Bisque'. There is simply no way to find recipes other than flipping through the book--the recipes aren't even in alphabetical order by title within the recipe section, either. There appears to be no discernible organization of these recipes within the book. The lack of an ingredients index means that you can't look up an ingredient and find all the recipes that contain that ingredient. These are *major* organizational flaws in a recipe book.
There also isn't clear delineation between recipes. That is, the recipes run together, rather than each recipe beginning at the top of a separate page. This bugs me, but not nearly as much as no index.
I have two of Kristen's books, and each one has the same first chapter, which is redundant. The other book also lacks an index or list of recipes in the table of contents.
If Kristen ever revises this book and the others in the series, I strongly advise the addition of an index, or at the very least a listing of the title of each recipe in the table of contents. The latter suggestion would not add to the cost of producing the books and would make them far easier to use than they are now.

The Daily Soup Cookbook Review

I craved Daily Soup concoctions in NYC, although they were pricey. Alas, this Summer, The Daily Soup closed its retail locations and sold its name to another company. But at least we are left with their bible, the book of soup recipes. Definitely a keepsake. Some say there are four basic soup categories: broth, clear, pureed, and thick. The Daily Soup broke these rules of combined the categories. Therefore, the books chapters are grouped into vegetable, corn, tomato, rice, bean, chili, lentil/pea, cheese, and coconut to name a few. The book includes recipes and stories, as well as recommendations of films and music to watch and listen to as your cook and eat. The standouts SOUPS are; a diary free, lowfat Borscht, Jamaican Pumpkin, Roasted Eggplant Parmesan, Yucatan Chicken Lime, Wild Mushroom barley, Chicken Matzoh Ball (sinker balls), Mexican Tortilla soup, Mexican Posole, Poblano corn chowder, New Zealnd Sweet Potato chowder, Cuban black bean, Chili Con Carne, Cincinnati Chili (ala skyline), 4 bean veg chili, indian black chili, Moroccan lamb stew, indian yellow split pea soup, senegalese with peanut soup, veg gumbo, and watermelon with chicken. My faves are Mulligatawny, Mulligatawny with lentils, and Tuscan multibean. The book also includes their Periodic Table of Soup Types, and nine recipes for veg, chicken, and fish based soup stocks

The 15-Minute Gourmet: Noodles Review & Ratings

The 15-Minute Gourmet: Noodles Review

This is a very attractively presented book on noodle recipes from a variety of regions. That's a big plus. I was originally looking for an Asian cookbook with noodle recipes, only to find that most included recipes for deep fried dishes that I tend to avoid, with only a few noodle recipes. Then I found this, and it offers variations on dishes from Thailand, China, Japan, India, Italy, and other regions.
Note that word "variations." Mitchell has simplified these recipes, and in some cases, has done some bold cross-breeding (adding balsamic vinegar to an Asian noodle dish, for instance). This will cause the "authenticity-minded" to cringe. Let them cringe, I say... these recipes are not only delicious, but almost embarassingly simple to prepare. That's a VERY BIG plus for many of us, who would rather make supper quickly, and have more time to play with the kids, write in our journals, or read "Harry Potter." Most of these recipes involve only whisking a few ingredients in a bowl, steaming the noodles, and then mixing in the sauce. The result? Very tasty, very attractive, and very diverse noodle entrees to please the palette. True to the title, they can all be made in 15 minutes or less. You don't need a whole lot of exotic ingredients either -- most of the more esoteric ones can be easily found in a large grocery store or in an Asian specialty food store.
I highly recommend this book to single people who want tasty meals but don't want to commit a whole lot of time to cooking for one, and on the other side of the spectrum -- busy parents who don't mind a mild snub to traditionalism if it means faster meals that are nevertheless scrumptious. Happy noodle cooking!

The Everything Almost Homemade Cookbook (Everything (Cooking)) Review

I haven't made any of the reipes yet, but I want to let folks know that so far most of the recipes make large amounts, many serve 6, 8 or 10. I cook for two and am used to most recipes that serve 4, but 6, 8, or 10 is a lot of food. Great for a family of four or more, not so great for small families of 2 or 3. Some but not all are freezable. On a positive note there are some nice features included that I haven't seen elsewhere: several recipes for make-your-own mixes, your own convenience foods, and some good charts. She does have some healthy eating info but there is no nutritional info, and many of the recipes are high fat using heavy cream, cream cheese etc.

Skinny Soups: Over 100 Hearty Entrees, Meal Starters, and Vegetarian Creations, Plus Special Soup Express Recipes for Cooks on the G (Skinny Cookbook) Review

Skinny Soups by Ruth Glick and Nancy Baggett is possibly the best lowcal cookbook ever written. I love soup and thought the recipes in this book were fabulous. Each soup I made was delicious, spicy and yet very easy to make. I have been making soups each week from this book for the last three months. I have experimented with fish stock for the first time, carrying home a halibut carcus large enough to fill my kitchen sink. Ruth Glick and Nancy Baggett have a award winning cookbook. I am purchasing several copies to give as gifts. I am looking forward to purchasing the entire Skinny Books series. Happy cooking!

A Beautiful Bowl of Soup: The Best Vegetarian Recipes Review

It is much easier to identify very good and very bad cookbooks than it is to identify the merely good or average cookbooks. I saw the beauty of this book with the first recipe I prepared from it. I have read two other books on soup by very famous cookbook authors Barbara Kafka and James Peterson and I would recommend this little book over both of their works. Both of these other works are good, worthy of five stars, but this volume by Paulette Mitchell is better for the price.
The fact that it is limited to only vegetarian and vegan recipes detracts not one wit from its value to the general cook. If this means anything at all, it means that the recipes will be less expensive and faster to prepare than recipes including meat. It especially means that you can make an appropriate homemade vegetable stock for these recipes very cheaply and easily, with no chicken sanitary problems to deal with.
The main body of the book with the chapters of soup recipes covers:
Creamy Soups featuring curried carrot, potatoes, squash, chestnuts, bell peppers, fresh peas, and peanuts
Chunky Soups featuring black beans, red lentils, chickpeas, asparagus, miso, minestrones and ribollita.
Chilled Soups featuring Vichyssoise, borscht, lettuce soup, avocado soup, and gazpacho
Dessert Soups featuring berry-wine, strawberry-rhubarb, gingered pear, and brandied pumpkin.
The chapter on chunky soups comprises about half the recipes. It should be clear from this list that most of the major soupy players are present. The only major type of soup one may miss is seafood chowders. For that, you can go to Jasper White's excellent book, '50 Chowders'.
Many recipes are vegetarian in that they include some dairy product; however, the author gives many tips on making the daried soups suitable to a vegan sensibility. The primary technique is to substitute soymilk for cow's milk and toasted breadcrumbs for grated cheese.
Before the main chapters of recipes, there is a short chapter on preparing vegetable stock. The book ends with an excellent chapter of recipes for `garnishes and accompaniments' which gives recipes for pestos, croutons, and various toasted nibbles. Many recipes also include a garnish which may easily be treated as a recipe in itself and a garnish from one soup can be grafted onto the serving of some other soup.
Aside from the excellent selection of recipes for soups and supporting cast, the recipes are written in a very appealing format. Rather than undistinguished text or simple numbered steps, the steps are broken down into major activities, with numerous checkpoints to indicate where in the preparation it would be best to freeze or how to do parts of the preparation in advance. Soup and garnish steps and ingredient lists are always separate to easily mix and match soup with garnish.
The book is loaded with tips relevant to the particular recipe, but which are also relevant to general cooking techniques. To this end, the author has provided a separate list of alphabetized names of tips, so that if you wish to use crème fraiche in a recipe but you have forgotten the recipe, simply look it up in the tips list. Surely, the index would do as well, except that it would not be as easy to browse the tip titles and let serendipity take its course.
To top it all off, this is a very attractively composed book. The pictures are not abundant. Only about one in ten recipes has an accompanying photograph, but all pics are done in a way which compliments the overall design of the book. The plain black typesetting is possibly not as elegant as the kind of treatment it may have gotten from Knopf, but it is a very nicely designed book. The literary quotes headlined by a famous quote on soup by Lewis Carroll sprinkled here and there simply add to the pleasant experience.
One advantage to meatless recipes is that they will take less time to prepare; however, I do wish to soft pedal the author's suggestion that the recipes are fast and easy. If you make both soup and garnish, you may be dealing with more than one separate steam, saute, or blanche step. Cream soups will require breaking out the food processor, blender, or stick blender. Chunky soups will require a fair amount of knife work. But, don't hold this against this or any other book. Just don't buy it with the notion that you are buying a fast recipe book.
Very highly recommended especially for the price. Not fast, but easy for novices.

125 Best Vegan Recipes Review

I absolutely love this cookbook - I've tried other vegan cookbooks and have returned them due to their not being a single recipe I would ever try, with ingredients that are extremely expensive and tough to find even in my local natural foods store. This one is a rare exception - every turn of the page revealed a recipe I can't wait to try...pasta bake with italian soy sausage, peanut dip, spinach salad with strawberries and spiced pecans, sticky pecan squares, and a "kids" section with recipes *I* want to make for myself!
Each recipe also comes with tips for substitutions and suggested accompaniments. The authors have taken great pains to produce recipes that are easy and quick to make to fit in with a busy lifestyle, and tested on their own kids for "acceptability". This cookbook just about makes all my other cookbooks obsolete! FINALLY a vegan cookbook I can rave about!
