The Practically Macrobiotic Cookbook: Preparation of More Than 200 Delicious Macrobiotic Recipes Review

Macrobiotics is the logical extension of the current movement towards sustainable development - from the community and down to the level of the individual. In a word it represents a practical way to achieve individual sustainability in an increasingly dangerous world governed by degenerative diseases such as cancer, heart disease and the like many of which are induced by negative aspects of the degraded environment in which many of us currently live.
The philosophy behind macrobiotics is clearly presented and the argument for following the approach, already adopted by traditional populations to ensure freedom from such diseases, is presented in a compelling manner. Macrobiotics owes its core foundation to the diatary practices of traditional Japan but macro (great) biotic (life) diets can be linked to many traditional, grain-rich cuisines. The basic elements of the Japanese-based components of the diet are well described and illustrated in color. The resulting account is sufficient to enable a novice to start the diet and an old-hand will find endless enjoyment in the suggested dishes.
More to the point, the recipes are sophisticated and mouth-watering while at the same time complying with the essence of the macrobiotic philosopy which advises eating only whole foods (no refined products) and maintaining around 40%-50% intake of whole (or FRESHLY broken-down ie. flaked, kibbled etc.) grains.
The book represents an excellent introduction to the practicalities of a macrobiotic diet and only immediate tuition by a macrobiotic chef could improve on the presentation.
I recommend this book most highly to all those seeking to find their way towards living health on the macrobiotic path-way.The Journey To Enlightenment

Superfruits: (Top 20 Fruits Packed with Nutrients and Phytochemicals, Best Ways to Eat Fruits for Maximum Nutrition, and 75 Simple and Delicious Recipes for Overall Wellness) Review

As pharmaceutical companies inundate us with reasons as to why their drugs are the way to solve all of our health concerns, we've been brainwashed into putting complete reliance on them. People forget the benefits of the basics like exercise, and above all...eating the right foods!! I've found Superfruits to be a great go-to guide for finding the best fruits for my health needs. I feel healthier and more educated about what I'm consuming--both wins in my book.

The Healthy Taste Of Honey: Bee People's Recipes, Anecdotes & Lore Review

Sweet Memories"More rain, more rain." I look out my window and see a fat robin hopping across the lawn. The calendar says March 20th. It must be spring, even though there's a light dusting of snow on the ground. Spring is coming, I can taste it in the air, and soon we'll be planting gardens and pulling weeds, complaining that it is "too hot." When you are working in the field, there's nothing like a cool glass of switzel.
I grew up drinking switzel. My Grandma would make a cold pitcher for my dad and me when we were hauling wood or doing chores. Just what is switzel? Switzel - also known as switchel, swizzle, ginger-water or haymaker's punch - is a beverage made of water mixed with vinegar and honey, then seasoned with ginger.
Switzel is believed to have originated in the Caribbean, where molasses was often used for a sweetener. By the late 1600s, it had become a popular drink in the American colonies and by the 1800s it had become a traditional drink to serve to thirsty farmers at hay harvest time, hence the nickname haymaker's punch.

Sugar, brown sugar, or maple syrup is also sometimes used to sweeten the drink instead of honey. In Vermont oatmeal was sometimes added to give the drink extra body and lemon juice is also occasionally added to the beverage. My grandma and mom only ever made switzel with honey. The ratio of sweetener and vinegar to water varies widely in traditional and modern recipes, but here's a basic recipe to get you started.
8 cups water
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup honey
1 teaspoon ground ginger
For more great recipes with honey, I recommend checking out The Healthy Taste of Honey: Recipes, Anecdotes & Lore by Larry Lonik, published RKT Publishing. There are recipes from around the world, including old German, Croatian, Slavic, Russian, Polish, Canadian, and American. There are twelve categories of honey recipes here: for cooking, baking, canning, roasting, barbequing, freezing and more--and all for eating or drinking. The majority of the recipes are "sugarless" meaning they require no white sugar. A few, however, do call for sugar as well as honey, as the author did not wish to alter the ingredients of these long-treasured secrets.
The Healthy Taste of Honey is more than just a book of recipes. It's filled with fascinating facts about the social insect which produces honey. For example, there are 500 honeybees for every human being. Larry Lonik also includes a brief history of the honeybee in North America. The honeybee is not native, but introduced to the continent by early settlers.
Honey has been a part of mankind's history. In many cultures, honey has associations that go beyond its use as a food. The Egyptians sometimes used honey for embalming, and in the Roman Empire, honey was possibly used to pay taxes instead of gold. The Old Testament has many references to honey, the most famous being from the book of Exodus describing the Promised Land as a "land flowing with milk and honey." Yes, the fate of man and honeybee are intertwined. It has been said, that "If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left"...

Gluten-Free, Hassle Free: A Simple, Sane, Dietitian-Approved Program for Eating Your Way Back To Health Review

I've been gluten free for nearly two years, and I've read every book I can find about gluten free living. In my opinion, this is one of the best and most up to date.
The beginning of the book is for those newly diagnosed. "What is gluten?" "What CAN I eat?" She provides sample meal plans and grocery shopping suggestions, listing what foods are safe, not safe, or questionable.
As the book progresses, more challenging gluten free ideas are presented for the more experienced with the lifestyle. Such as making your own flour mix, gluten free gourmet meals for company, etc. There are over 100 recipes in this book.
The author also addresses the feelings many people like myself have dealt with when newly diagnosed, such as "I don't want to go out and draw attention to myself in a restaurant. It's easier to just stay home." Or "How do I explain to my friends when they try to say 'It's only a LITTLE bit of gluten - you can eat that!'"
One thing I thought was unique about this book was the dining out cards. Many other books have these, but this book has them in 14 different languages, for ethnic cuisine or foreign travel. Cool!
I would recommend this book to anyone living a gluten free lifestyle, and to those with a gluten free relative or close friend who want to help and understand.

Choose to Lose: A Food Lover's Guide to Permanent Weight Loss Review

DIETS DON'T WORK! I have been searching for some way to change my way of thinking about food. I woke up every day planning where and what I would eat. Food was my life. Now I really think about food differently! I actually see it as the FUEL needed to maintain my body. I always thought I ate "healthy". I loved meats, potatoes, veggies. Never ate desserts and couldn't figure out why I was fat. It never dawned on me that what I was putting on these foods mattered a lot!! I have learned to eat everything I did before, but in a healthier way. Some days I can barely get down all the food that is required! All I did was begin to become aware of FAT CALORIES. This is a life change plan. Thanks for changing my life.

Jacques Pepin's Simple and Healthy Cooking Review

Tired of cooking the same old dishes and wanting to serve my family healthy meals, I recently purchased approximately 10 new cookbooks. I was searching for a cookbook with simple recipes that I could prepare on a daily basis. The books that I purchased were either too basic and boring or interesting but too complicated. "Jacques Pepin's Simple and Healthy Cooking" was exactly what I was searching for. His recipes are delicious and interesting, as well as, healthy and simple to prepare. I have used this cookbook every night that I have cooked since I purchased it. I think I have tried at least 1/2 of the main course & accompaniment recipes. My family enjoys eating the meals as much as I enjoy preparing them.
Oh, and don't mistake "healthy" as meaning "dietitic" or "tasteless". He does not sacrifice taste for health. He uses a lot of fresh ingredients that give the dishes a great flavor. He does not omit butter, salt, etc. from his recipes however, not much is needed to achieve a flavorful taste.
I was so excited about his book that I purchased "Cooking with Claudine" last week. The recipes look just as appetizing but, I have to admit that I prefer the layout of "Simple & Healthy", in which the recipes are laid out in courses opposed to being arranged in menus. "Simple & Healthy" is easier to search through, it has a side photo for almost every recipe and has suggested menus listed at the beginning of the book.
Unlike the other books that I purchased...this is a cookbook that you will actually use!

Everyday Food: Great Food Fast Review

Having subscribed to the magazine since issue #1, I was sad having to give all my back-issues away due to a move. I was so happy to see this book which is much nicer than the magazine - no advertising! The layout is very smart. Each recipe(except for some side dishes)has it's own page with a full photo on the opposite page and divided into Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter sections which is very practical for cooks who shop seasonal, like myself. One can write their grocery list directly from each seasonal section. I've never seen the TV show, so I can't say if these recipes where ever shown on TV, but they do include the nutritional data for each recipe at the back of the book. Simple basics like how to boil rice etc., is also included at the back for quick review. The Tomato and Olive Penne, on page 244, has become a household favorite.

Le Cordon Bleu: Quick Classics Review

I love to cook but rarely have the time to fix anything really elegant. This book has been a life safer when I've needed to make something special on short notice (ie when the in-laws drop by).
I've even used this book to teach my husband how to cook. He's usually terrified of the kitchen, but found this book so easy to use that we now cook together every Friday.

The Way to Cook Review

Julia Child's "The Way to Cook" is one of the essential cookbooks every kitchen should have. Julia's straight forward instructions, her outstanding recipes and the quality of the dishes she recommends make this and fantastic cookbook.
While Julia covers a wide range of dishes in this book (Soups, Breads, Eggs, Fish, Poultry, Meat, Vegetables, Salads, Pastry, Desserts, and Cakes & Cookies) her emphasis is definitely on French/European cooking. If you are looking for recipes from different ethnic groups, you will need to find other cookbooks to compliment this one.
In the last five years that I've owned this cookbook, I've made a wide selection of recipes and have never been disappointed. From simple dishes such as crepes to complex day-long affairs such as Lamb Stew Printaniere, her instructions have been complete, straightforward, and detailed. If you follow her steps, you're guaranteed to have incredible results.
The book includes both beautiful and useful photographs. This is important, because one of the big drawbacks with most cookbooks are that they have incredible imagery of the finished dish, but don't actually show you how things should look as they are being prepared. The way to cook does an excellent job at showing you both... which is one of the reasons it is such an outstanding book.
Julia's other books are also excellent. Both "Baking with Julia" and "In Julia's Kitchen With Master Chefs" are outstanding.
One last word of advice... if you ever make A Fast Saute of Beef for Two from this book, use heavy creame instead of cornstarch (she says you can use either). The cream will make the difference between a good meal and a great one!
Enjoy!
