Sleep On It: Prepare Delicious Meals the Night Before That You Can Pop In the Oven the Next Day Review

Gordon, the Innkeeper of Nantucket House in Chatham on Cape Cod, has collected recipes from Inns and B & B's around the country that can be prepared the night before and cooked the next day.
Naturally many of these are breakfast or brunch oriented and most are baked, like Spiced Pear French Toast, Cinnamon Crunch Coffee Cake, Seafood Brunch Strata, Bacon and Egg Lasagna, Easy Wild Rice Quiche.
A short appetizer chapter includes cheese balls and dips as well as chicken wings and Mushroom Rolls and for dinner there's Sweet Potato Casserole, Salmon Mexicana, or Baked Barbecued Beef Brisket.
Some recipes use shortcut ingredients like canned soups or frozen bread dough and the variety of sources means there's something to appeal to everyone. This is a folksy book which will chiefly appeal to those who like to entertain for breakfast or brunch.

Simply Natural Baby Food: Easy Recipes for Delicious Meals Your Infant and Toddler Will Love Review

I love this little book. I know a past reviewer criticised the book for being too thin but that's one of the things I like about it. I have always enjoyed cooking and bought quite a few baby cook books when my daughter was very young thinking I would potter around making her perfect gourmet meals but soon realised that there are many days when the thought of even leafing through the pages of those cookbooks is too much effort. I just find them too overwhelming and invariably reach for this book because the recipes are simple but still tasty. You don't need to be a great cook to be able to make these recipes, the instructions are very easy to follow.
Despite being a slender volume, the book packs a lot of information into its pages, and still has a great collection of recipes.

I never found it to be a problem finding any of the ingredients. I have to admit that even though I consider my cooking to be quite wholesome I had never used some of the items like dried seaweed (you only use a pinch) and ground seeds myself, but after reading in the book just why these things are included, I found myself adding them to my own food as well. They are incredibly nutritious and such an easy way to bolster your child's immune system which I found so reassuring during the winter. I'm sure you can order these ingredients online if you can't find them in a store nearby. You use such a small amount that they will last for ages. And you can always leave those items out if you prefer.
The book is written in a very friendly manner and is a nice balance between educating and guiding you as to what your baby's and toddler's developmental needs are with easy to follow recipes. A reviewer below wrote that the last thing they needed was to be making their own baby cereal. Well I guess if that's your mindset then this book isn't for you because honestly it takes all of two seconds to make the cereal, and the jar lasts a very long time when you are using a couple of tablespoons at a time! Not that you can't find good organic packaged baby cereal, (I did try that myself but my baby would never eat it). And there's nothing stopping you from using the recipes as guides and substituting purchased products for some ingredients if it makes life easier.
The book takes you right through to when your child is a toddler with tips that help you sneak vegetables into their diet and great snack ideas too. There are some lovely recipes for cookies and cakes as well, which is nice, it's very realistic in that although you want to feel that you are presenting your child with yummy healthy food, there's always a place for sweet treats in life. I'm not personally a fan of soy products which some of the recipes call for, but I just substitute the tofu or whatever with chicken, lamb or fish.
I went online to check out the authors website and was happy to see that the adorable little girls on the website who I assume are the author's daughters look like very happy and healthy children. They are a great advertisement for the book.

How to Feed a Teenage Boy: Recipes and Strategies Review

I wish my family had this book when I was growing up. The recipes aren't just for teenage boys; they're healthy and easy recipes for the whole family. There are good tips scattered throughout the book on making kitchen life easier, as well as insight into how teenage boys should eat. There are also great tips on how to get guys to eat healthier, like put healthy food where they will find it! Excellent for anyone who is looking to help her family eat healthier, even without teenage boys.

Mommy Made and Daddy Too (Revised): Home Cooking for a Healthy Baby & Toddler Review

"Super Baby Food" has it's strong points but the recipes are a bit to froo-froo for my taste and they seem to go to the vegetarian extreme. "Mommy Made" however, contains great basic recipes that anyone with a steamer and blender can make. The author is very informative about introducing new foods to your baby and provides a timeline as to when you should introduce them. The receipes are not grouped by age but by food (ie fruits, vegetables, meats, etc) however, if you look carefully at the sidebar notes that the author makes, you will notice that she puts them in order within each category. For instance, applesauce is the first food listed and is therefore one of your baby's first foods. Make sure to read the sidebars as you go so that you can tell what foods are appropriate to introduce at what age. I do agree with another reviewer that there could be more information on how to freeze and store the prepared food but that is a minor detail and just about anyone can figure it out on their own. This is a great book that you can use over and over. I highly suggest it!

The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids' Favorite Meals Review

This book is truly amazing. I have two children who won't eat a mini-carrot between them, and they are now downing veggie after veggie without suspecting a thing!! Here is the funny thing- it works on my husband too! He claims he doesn't like sweet potatoes, but he has eaten them in so many things now- I just wait and tell him afterwards (haha, guess what you just ate?!). Do I feel guilty about sneaking veggies? Not at all! Whatever I can do to help my family be healthier, I would do in a heartbeat. I have a couple of hints- first of all, buy all of your veggies at once and spend about 3 hours one afternoon once per month making the five most common veggie purees. Pour them into individual serving size freezer bags and then put all of the little bags into a gallon bag (one per type of puree), label them, and you are good to go! This is much easier than trying to puree veggies for each meal, it would become so time-consuming that you would be tempted to change your mind at the last minute and make something easier (and less healthy). I grab a bag out of the freezer, quickly defrost and then stir it in with the kids mac n' cheese, chocolate pudding, and all sorts of other "treat food" that all of a sudden become vitamin-rich dishes. I also pre-make some of the breading and flour mix too, and keep them vacuum-packed...it really simplifies things at dinnertime. Likewise, I make the breakfast cookies in a triple recipe, and save them and freeze them for a quick, easy and healthy breakfast. The meat recipes in this book are also excellent- the sloppy joes, meatballs, and the meatloaf- as well as the baked ziti and the pizza- are especially fabulous. This is the first book that I have felt compelled to write a review about, but I felt I absolutely had to do it! We have been eating almost exclusively on recipes from this book for a month now and we all feel so much healthier. Kudos to Missy Chase Lapine! Thank you!

The Gluten-Free Almond Flour Cookbook Review

This book has a number of good and SIMPLE recipes for gluten-free and low-carb dishes using almond flour. Well worth adding to the shelf; it simplifies and collects a lot of information about almond flour that is widely scattered.
The one big caution is that the author uncritically uses agave nectar for sweetening in almost all the recipes. She says this is because agave nectar is "lower on the glycemic index", but that's not an advantage, that's merely because agave nectar is largely fructose, the most dangerous of the sugars.
From Stephan Guyenet, Ph.D. in neurobiology (blog at [...]
"Agave syrup is made from the heart of the agave plant, which is pressed to release a juice rich in inulin. Inulin is a polymer made of fructose molecules. The inulin is then broken down either by heat or by enzymatic processing. The result is a sweet syrup that is rich in fructose. Agave syrup is marketed as a healthy, alternative sweetener. In fact, it's probably as bad or worse than high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). They are both a refined and processed plant extract. Both are high in fructose, with agave syrup leading HFCS (estimates of agave syrup range up to 92% fructose by calories). Finally, agave syrup is expensive and inefficient to produce. The high fructose content gives agave syrup a low glycemic index, because fructose does not raise blood glucose. Unfortunately, as some diabetics learned the hard way, using fructose as a substitute for sucrose (cane sugar) has negative long-term effects on insulin sensitivity."
I find that these recipes can be adapted by omitting the ill-chosen agave nectar sweetner, in favor of either ordinary sugar (sucrose) or for low-carbs an equivalent combination of Emerald Forest Sugar Erythritol, 1-Pound (Pack of 6) and NuNaturals NuStevia Pure White Stevia Extract, 1 Ounce (Pack of 2), as recommended by Lauren at Healthy Indulgences blog [...]

Working Mom's Guide to Kid-Friendly Meals : Over 200 Fast & Easy Recipes That Will Have Your Whole Family Begging for More Review

I was a bit disappointed. There are some good ideas but most of the stuff is using all premade stuff bought at the grocery store that I don't need a cookbook to use, though the book gave me some good ideas. I couldn't believe there is actually a recipe for heating up a store bought apple pie and putting some spiced whipped topping on it. To give it some credit there are a couple of good recipes but I'm not sure if I would give this book to someone else.

Quick Meals for Healthy Kids and Busy Parents: Wholesome Family Recipes in 30 Minutes or Less From Three Leading Child Nutrition Experts Review

I must admit I'm a cook book junkie--always at the library and book stores looking for healthy, "kid-friendly" recipes. I purchased this book on a whim five years ago, and would rate it my all time favorite "family" cookbook. Recipes are in chapters: Soups, Chicken & Fish, Ground Beef (Turkey), Vegetables, Grains, Tortillas, Potatos, Pita Pockets, Stir-fry, Salads, Breads, Finishing touches, Snacks & Lunch treats for kids, and finally Beverages. At the end of all recipes are suggestions to "balance your meal." Many of these suggestions are other recipes in the cook book. There are also several microwave recipes throught the book. The tortilla recipes (Bean Burrito--micro & fast!) and pita recipes (Chicken Parmesan Pita)are especially good. The Chocolate Pudding (micro) recipe is a great after school snack. The bottom line is that my kids will eat almost everything I cook from this book, and I can't say that about any other cook book I own.

Vegan Lunch Box: 130 Amazing, Animal-Free Lunches Kids and Grown-Ups Will Love Review

I just received my copy of Vegan Lunch Box after much anticipation. I was a fan of the blog that inspired the book and for some reason expected the format of the book to be similar, which is what appealed to me. Unfortunately, the entire book is laid out in a new way.
First of all, there are virtually no pictures (save for a special insert in the middle of the book), and none to accompany the recipes. There are very few set "menus" except in sections for special occasions and a few to kick off your thinking. The recipes are divided into apps, salads, soups, sandwiches, main courses, sides, breads, desserts and beverages, which is useful, though there are a few stand-by recipes in here I think she could have skipped for most of us- veggie dogs and baked beans for example, takes up an entire page.
The recipes go perhaps a bit beyond lunch- I won't be making soups or homemade beverages for my child's lunch box- but that's ok, it makes it a bit more versatile as a book for veggie families.
What I found helpful about the original blog was the creativity of how Jennifer, the author, put the meals together in the bento lunchboxes she created. The combinations of food items and what her child choose to eat and appreciated. It's not the recipes I struggle with, it's how to put together an appealing lunch for a vegetarian child (and one that her classmates will envy!).
That said, this is a useful book and a must have for parents to new vegetarians, and does have plenty to offer the veteran as well. I just wish they had followed the format of the blog a little bit more closely. The book does mention that all the original recipes are on the blog archive- but that's why I purchased the book, so I could have that information in a book format.

Feeding the Whole Family: Recipes for Babies, Young Children, and Their Parents Review

I have the first edition of this cookbook and it rates up there with my 5 most used cookbooks. I have bought multiple copies and given them as gifts to friends and family members. I cook primarily whole foods for my family, which in common terms means that I cook from scratch about 18-20 of our 21 weekly meals. Many of these recipes can be made quickly (30 minutes) with some planning.
The author gives wonderful advice for cooking beans, basic recipes for various grains and family favorite sauces. Most of the soup recipes are staples in our house. The introduction of 'new' and different grains...millet, quinoa, buckwheat...is a great way to add variety to your family's diet and most are quick and easy to make. Our culture eats far too much wheat and making some wheat-free meals is a welcome change in most families.
If I had just 1 box of books I could keep, this would be one of the books I would be sure made its way into the box.

The Food Nanny Rescues Dinner: Easy Family Meals for Every Day of the Week Review

I feed 6-7 people every day for dinner, sometimes more if one or two of my kids' friends are over. I think about food all day even when it's not meal time because I'm thinking about what to put together to make a cohesive meal, if I laid it out to thaw, if I have enough of it, if I have any leftovers that I can incorporate so as not to waste food. It is exhausting. I purchase absolutely any cookbook there is that will help me make meal planning, prep and cooking easier. So when I saw this book I had to have it.
The very first page was planning the weekly menu like I've been trying to do for years. This book is having Comfort Food on Monday, Italian on Tuesday, Fish & Meatless on Wednesday, Mexican Night on Thursday, Pizza Friday's, Grill Night on Saturday and Family Traditions on Sunday. I've been doing something similar but trying to make mine Meatless Monday's, [...]. But regardless of what you pick this is excellent meal planning advice. It gives yourself (and the kids and spouse) an idea of what to look forward to rather than coming home with pots and pans banging around with no idea of what to prepare.
That is what I liked about the Sandi Richard book too, The Family Dinner Fix: Cooking for the Rushed. She has similar ideas to Ms. Edmunds. I would use a calendar that you get free in the mail and write your "theme" across the top. Your themes might be different than the suggested themes in this book but either way come up with 7 themes and write them across the top of the calendar.
Now go to each chapter in this cookbook (or any other cookbook) and list a recipe that corresponds to that theme. List the page it is on and briefly write any side dishes that you would be serving with the main entree. Ms. Edmunds suggests making your menu first and then your grocery list second. I believe in making the grocery list first and then making meals from that. I try to buy what's on sale and then make meals from the sale foods rather than the other way around.
I made the white chicken chili that was listed under the Comfort Food section. It's intended to be a Monday meal but I think we had it on a Wednesday (oops!). LOL. It was very good. Also under each recipe is a conversation starter. It's a question you're to pose to the family around the dinner table to stimulate conversation. I actually purchased these from www.savingdinner.com and here they are free.
There are also bread recipes, side dishes, desserts, after school snacks, cooking tips, and other great ideas to get the family back to the dinner table. It's an awesome book. One of my better purchases. This is certainly a fantastic gift, wedding or otherwise. It would be a great gift for someone just starting to cook who needs ideas and instruction for getting a complete meal on the table.
Another good cookbook I like is Saving Dinner: The Menus, Recipes, and Shopping Lists to Bring Your Family Back to the Table by Leann Ely. It has shopping lists, menus, and great recipes to get started. It's not laid out with "theme" nights like the Food Nanny but it's good nevertheless.

The Healthy Start Kids' Cookbook: Fun and Healthful Recipes That Kids Can Make Themselves Review

This kids' cookbook starts with a brief and easy-to-understand discussion of nutrition. Safety tips for kid-cooks are included, as well as a handy illustrated glossary of kitchen tools and cooking terms.
But the "meat" of the book is the recipes. They are simple, fun, tasty and (don't tell the kids) good for you. There are sections on breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and dessert. Many of the recipes are assembly line cooking (take a banana, stick a clean popsicle stick in the end and freeze overnight for a frozen banana treat) that will be a snap for even the youngest cook. But don't get the idea that this is all "cooking for babies." There's a "Sunny Honey Banana Bread" recipe with sunflower seeds that I'm making for the family tonight.

Great cookbook! I have been cooking allergy free for my son for approx 2 years now. He is allergic to eggs, soy, dairy, wheat and tree nuts. It is hard to find a cookbook that is sensitive to all of the top 8 allergens. This one does, with the exception of just a couple of recipes. I purchased this cookbook to find some new ideas. I have started to notice that the varying cookbooks tend to rely on one specific type of gluten free flour. This one is rice flours and tapioca flours which can have a little grittier taste. The last cookbook I used it was oat flour (Sophie Safe) and those recipes tend to crumble. It is nice to have a few new recipes and to try new ingredients to see which ones work for you. I still love Sophie Safe, but am enjoying this cookbook just as much! If you cook for someone with allergies, you know how challenging it can be. I would recommend this cookbook highly!! Good luck!!
